Pinkbike Poll: Euro Styling

Jan 6, 2016 at 1:25
by Paul Aston
The Europeans have taken a lot of flak in the past about their style within the mountain bike industry, especially from the Brits, even though we are part of Europe and come with plenty of our own designer downfalls.

In the past, the common notion was that most of the perceived cool products came from the USA: Intense Bicycles, Santa Cruz, Troy Lee, Fox Clothing and a bunch of other cool kids led out by Palmer. The Euros had to take years of lycra related abuse on the chin, especially when donned under huge Dainese body armour. There are still plenty of brands that continue to implement the ugly stick in their design studios, on both sides of the ocean. The MET Parachute I reviewed last year and the resulting comments sparked the idea for this poll. But, there have been many a beauty born in Europe in recent years: the YT Tues carbon won the hearts of many at its inception and I think the Mondraker Foxy was the best looking bike at Eurobike this year. Troy Lee have been styling things up stateside forever, but over in Europe POC, ION and iXS have been fixing up and looking smart over the last few years.

Spot the odd one out in the following corners:

Agreed. That and two VPP bikes? Nothing against Santa Cruz or Intense, but yeah, I'm sure those three bikes are deeeeefinitely the best we have to offer...

If you isolate just the styling in the case of the Ellsworth there's nothing wrong with it. It might not be your cup of tea but the styling is executed well. Compare a BMW or a Mazda; there are associations with each brand that color how people might think about the 'style', but in most cases the actual STYLING is better executed on the Mazda. People have issues with Ellsworth the suspension or Ellsworth the Tony or Ellsworth the people who answer the phone, but that is not the same thing as styling.

3-2 to America YT and Mondraker score for europe. TLD, Intense And Santa cruz for US.

@Bluefire: Maybe so, but all Evil bikes alone take the win for style in my opinion, nothing in the market even comes close. Evil makes a mean looking bike.

I had my undead dh bike, with the new swingarm, for over 2 years without any problems and the following 29er I've put that thing through hell this last year and it's built like a tank nothing wrong and I weight 205lbs. All bikes can fail, I've cracked my v10 twice and that was aluminum.
  • + 2
@hamncheez: yea the Wilson is very nice and ironically both Devinci and Evil's suspension are designed by Dave Weagle, but I still think the evil undead is the sweetest looking bike ever built, check this pic out.

  • + 1
@dirtyrig: The Uprising was one of the first but that cracked on the seat post brace I waited 3 months for a replacement frame from the new factory. The Undead was the later frame from the "new factory" that cracked on the top tube by the steering head and swingarm "paint" cracked at the chips.

@sevensixtwo: Yea, who loaded the deck on that one with the Ellsworth photo. Do they still make bikes???
  • + 3
@Bluefire: I know plenty of big brothers who DO NOT have their shit together... so yeah definitely. Older, bigger, welathier and made plenty more mistakes.... Little brother sometimes follows along into bad situations (cough cough Iraq), but seems to be less stubborn than big brother.... I could go on but I think I illustrated the point/concentrated my inebriated musings...

@WAKIdesigns: Ventana used to make such good looking bikes, I don't know what happened. They were like "smoother" Turners; I always thought they would take a similar path to Turner (who, I think, makes good looking bikes), but alas, they got bit by the hyrdroforming buzz, never quite got it down, and then got stuck there, wallowing in 2010.

As for US, I really can't stand that Euro banter... as if less people got fkd during Obama administration, idiots went to Syria.  @SteveDekker, you are out of your mind, and if you are so old and talk such crap it means you are totally brainwashed. You tell me I lack freedom, really? Freedom to do what? Shop at Wallmart and watch TV every day? Funny you bring up trails in US and freedom in one sentence, wasn't there a series of articles about MTBers being banned from wilderness by Sierra Club lobbying? People get scared to death as soon as you mention an e-bike because it is just an excuse for authorities to ban MTB as a whole. Tell me, in your opinion, is America fighting evil and is socialism very very bad? I'd like to get your profile...

I tell you how horrible Sweden is. I work 1920 hours a year, get paid double for overtime, I have right to 220 days of paid parental leave at 80% rate of my salary, paid by the state, additional 10% is paid by employer if employee worked at a company for 2,5 year. I have full right to sick leave, no questions asked for sick periods shorter than 2 weeks, I can ask for sick leave based on too much stress, prescribed by psychologist. My buddy got a concussion, he is on 50% sick leave since a year. I pay 9$ a month for "work-loss" insurance which in case of losing job, gives me 60% of my salary for 2 years, as long as I am willing to look for a job.

@calebscott - currently Sweden is polishing their rules when it comes to asylants who committed crimes. Since the beginning of the crisis, less than 10 people were killed by them, which is nothing compared to overmedication, obesity or alcoholism. Three days ago Hells Angels shot and killed 3 men next to my friends garden. City is full of HA and Bandidos patrols. We must remember that situation in Syria is caused by nothing else but Western support for Israel as a general shit maker and recently, directly caused by expansion of ISIS which is caused by destabilization of the region by blowing up Iraq. Isis is sponsored by Saudi oil money flowing to them from US and China. So we did it to ourselves, sorry.

You obviously watched that idiotic documentary. "Sweden soon a third world country"

@WAKIdesigns: Waki, First That comment was not directed at you, but at Earthymofo. However you read an article about wilderness area trail closures, specifically in Marin. One small city in a very big state and an even bigger country. We are concerned about areas closed to riding; however there are still millions of miles of open areas with trails we can ride.
I live on the Western slope, Colorado. There are dozens of trail systems nearby. You may have heard of some of them, I live near Fruita and 90 minutes from Moab. I can ride wherever I want, Desert trails, Mountain trails all on public land. No chance of being closed. Thats freedom.

All these benefit's that you talk about sound like a good deal for someone that embraces mediocrity and comfort over economic freedom and prosperity.
@Rollbretttreter It wouldn't be that big of a problem if the millions travelling to your country ILLEGALLY were actual refugees not people from Kenya to Pakistan coming to your country to reap the benefits that your fore fathers worked so hard to set up for the GERMAN people. • + 7
@seburkhardt: because I Iived in Poland before and Sweden is a safer country for an average middle class human being despite having muuuch more immigrants, particularly ones coming from world's worst war zones. And I hear all this prejudiced bullcrap about immigrants coming from some Polish political wackos, when I'd rather hang out in a stigmatized neighborhood of Gothenburg every day, than go once to murky areas of town I studied in, infested with unemployed and football "fans", or even worse go to a party in countryside around my hometown, where you have a really high chance to get mugged (I got mugged by hill billies) In Sweden I had just one sketchy encounter with some meathead from ex-soviet country in 10 years. In Poland I had one every second month. I also think that recent sht in Paris in Belgium gets on peoples minds a bit and we are max 2 attacks away from people taking PC blinds off their eyes and stop saying that Islam is cool and they are people just like us. Once people go as anal on Islam as they go on Christanity we can start true assimilation of immigrants, we need to destroy the moral grounds for that ideology, because there are none. I'd aim for burka. Once their women get a proper voice, the men will adjust and situation will change for much better. The men are the problem, they have too much unearned authority, they picture themselves as moral leaders, their macho position may be necessary in Middle East, but is completely useless in Europe. I saw a teenage girl once losing it, taking burka off and jumping into the lake with her teenage friends. I saw it building up in her for half of an hour. A lot of their religiosity is driven by fear, they run away from religious war, and jump straight into communities run by similar fk ups. Dissolve their religion, dismantle this fake ideology and we can use each other as we all do in the West. We mist first get rid of Christanity to give example and Sweden is great with that.

So as you can imagine, I am much more worried to see my daughter being damaged by natural causes. Getting raped by a dude from Somalia doesn't really ring a bell. I imagined her a few times without hair on hospital bed, being cured for cancer. Have you ever been to a kids hospital? I've been to Auschwitz, lived 30 miles from it. You know place run by people who thought of themselves as first class citizens. Many pictures of skinny kids there. And I know that it's been people like you and me doing the worst atrocities, all it takes is a bit of ideology, carrying national flags around, calling for Gods will. You, just like me, are perfectly capable of that, it's a matter of circumstances. That's what keeps me up at night sometimes. My Grandfather served in Wehrmaht in Stalingrad. Never spoke of it, even to his wife and daughter, my mother. Family of my wife, has been butchered by Soviets, friends of US for a short while. Why was Poland fkd by Allies after WW2? Because they didn't want to annoy Stalin. Polish troops were denied presence at War ending parade in London in 1945. To not annoy Stalin.

So.. who's living in a bubble? You live a dream of a just nation, who's role is to save the world, isn't it? One nation under God. The right God.

@WAKIdesigns: this should do it.Is it that Santa Cruz pile of bollox by any chance?Wink

@Earthmotherfu: probably not the best person to ask as I just use what works and don't really give a brass monkey what it looks like.

Pinkbike is trolling us by putting up and Elisworth right.....right!?!?!?!
  • + 36
They could have balanced it out with an Orange
  • + 4
@Rockmonkey: They could have balanced Ellsworth with Dawes. I put them in the same category.
  • + 1
 @Rockmonkey: If schwinn was european...
  • - 1
Sorry everybody, but why does everybody hate ellsworth so much in fact ? Big Grin ok i m a noob on this one, lighten me !
  • + 5
@RedBurn: It's all Team Robots fault. Hate towards Ellsworth and Crank Bros... he did it!
  • + 4
It has to be. The Santa Cruz choice wasn't very good either, when their Nomad is far better looking. Ibis would have great, or they could have put up something realy cool like an Independent Fabrication or Canfield.
  • + 70
Mountain biking since the enduro fad: we've become a community that tolerates fanny packs.

we have nothing to say about style. No one who's visited this site in the last 5 years is qualified to vote in this poll. Among people that don't ride, 100% think every single one of us looks like an idiot, and they are correct.

fanny packs...
  • + 31
Yeah best reply here, we all look like douches most of the time. Think of an hardcore harley-davidson owner that buys any crap if it's written harley-davidson on it, we look the same to 99% of the people that don't care about mtb. I mean even I we think we look so rad in that matching TLD fluo camo race kit and our pinstriped tricked out Demo, we don't, we look like tools.
  • + 12
@MaxAlary: haha, exactly. we're all dorks. the sooner we realize that, and stop being obsessed about stylistic minutiae, the better. no one outside our minuscule circle gives a f*ck; it's not worth worrying about.
  • + 3
 But but.... the practicality!
  • + 21
Fanny packs are so uncool... because I mean why would you want your back to stay dry and ventilated, have the weight centered and lower on your body and still perform the same role as those really cool looking backpacks. Someone once told me that if you are cool...you don't really think about being cool. I think the focus on trends v. doing what works makes us less cool. If a fanny pack works for you...go forth and fanny pack. I don't really care if mine is "enduro", if Troy Lee made it look like a flyer for a zebra orgy, or if it was featured in a video with too little Pantera and too much slow mo... the thing works.
  • + 9
@MaxAlary: the only saving grace for us is that, beyond the stupid loud color patterns, it's largely functional. I hate the way 5.10's look, i still wear them. I hate the way long mtb shorts look. I still wear them. i realllly hate the way mtb armor looks, and i certainly still wear that.

of course, you're right, 99% of people don't understand that, and it just looks like the equivalent of a harley rider playing outlaw dress-up
  • + 1
had to laugh so hard, excellent my friend
  • + 1
Nah, that's all in your head.
  • + 6
Apart from those of us that have enough common sense to no touch, fanny packs, lycra, bolt on chin guards, power ranger pajamas etc etc Flannel an baggys ftw
  • + 1
Try riding a back pack all day long in some hot Asian country and you'll know. But it doesn't deter locals rocking the Enduro style a bit.
  • + 4
 @xeren: what's wrong with 5-10's looks?? I love my 5-10s!
  • + 3
umm....as an old dude...I will say that fanny packs have been popular with mountain bikers since the very beginning of the sport. it's not enduro. it's just retro.
  • + 42
That Ellsworth is a bit of a cheap shot isn't it Paul.
  • + 2
Could have put so many other beautiful bikes, RM knolly, evil, alchemy, pivot, Banshee. Shit like that. Even specialized or trek.
  • + 2
@TFreeman: I believe Knolly and Banshee are both Canadian... as is RM.
  • + 7
@snl1200: and Canada is in america is it not?
  • + 1
@TFreeman: I'm gonna throw the only pitiful rope I can to save you.. Canada is in the Americas as it its in north America. however, most people are things united states of...

k goodluck
  • + 1
@TFreeman: try telling that to a canadian, I'll pick you up after he thumps you.
  • + 6
@TFreeman: No. Canada is in North America. There is no "America" other than the common shortened slang name for the United States of America...which the article directly references through it's use of U.S.A. in the text. Don't drag us into that mess in until the Trump thing gets sorted but feel free to visit anytime. Our trails in BC (...and no we are not part of Columbia) are plentiful and lovely.
  • + 1
@snl1200: Yeah, but you are still a protectorate of the British Empire! @TFreeman I really hope you were joking or you meant the North American continent (and nobody who says America is referring to the continent).
  • + 2
@herzalot: True that. Aside from the constitutional monarchy that pops by every couple of years and waves from an armoured car though I feel inclined to ask "but what have they done for me lately?" and would assume the resounding answer would be not a whole lot other than those delicious little Jelly Babies candies. Might I suggest if Trump wins the presidency that BC, Oregon, Washington and California start their own country and we can ditch the monarchy and assign our national sport as mountain biking and our national anthem as "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden?
  • + 2
@snl1200: let's add Alaska and Yukon territories!!!
  • + 28
The YT downhill bike has the best mix of surfacing and graphics that I've seen in the industry. The Scott Gambler in certain iterations is really fresh as well. Most of the Specialized products are well-crafted styling-wise but usually quite conservative in design and graphics. POC does the best job overall on creating a cohesive brand appearance with their clean, uncluttered look extending to nearly everything they make but the helmets tend to look monolithic and 'heavy' in comparison to (for example) a Bell Full 9.

Shoot, as far as mountain bike industry style goes, I'd venture to put CANADA in front of the USA. Rocky, Norco, Arcteryx, DeVinci...these brands punch way above their weight and are great emblems for their country's design chops.
  • + 6
Completely agree with the Canadian argument. That said the YT, specialized and Santa Cruz (all Dh bikes) are great in their own right
  • + 7
 Style = Evil Bikes
  • + 3
I still dream about that purple+gold demo 7 frameset, circa 2007. It was the bomb back in the days.
  • + 3
love that Rocky Mountain Sherpa frame
  • + 1
@Kainerm: I saw this bike at my first dh race. Completely enamored with the color scheme to this day. Sadly no one has produced anything similar and the age of neon has rendered that color scheme out of style for at least a decade.
  • + 4
2015 Trek Remedy 9 has one of the best paint jobs I've seen in recent memory. For a production bike that is.
  • + 1
Wait a second. So you are saying the entire continent of Europe and all their various countries vs just the US. That is weak sauce. I say Canada falls under the umbrella of North America when it comes to MTB design and product. You don't go to Whistler and see vastly different MTB gear than you would at any bike park in the US. Europe on the other hand has totally unique brands and companies that you cant even get in North America. Do European riders want their design representation to be exclusive to what comes out of Russia? As I recall it is the biggest nation in Europe ergo it must represent the best that the entire continent has to offer right?
  • + 29
there are no winners in a mountain bike fashion contest
  • + 25
mtn biking is like a star trek convention - no matter how you dress, you'll never look cool.
  • + 3
@cuban-b: right on. If they wanted to look cool, they should try Blake's 7, like me and my friend.
  • + 5
Sometimes you find a way to look cool, or at least normal. Then mainstream catches up and you need to buy saddle tool bag to stick out again...
  • + 2
@cuban-b: who needs to look cool when you're a badass?!?
  • + 17
apparently you can just throw a random selections of photos together and ask people to make a comparison these days.
  • + 15
There's no selection for "who gives a shit?"

As a British creative director that lives in Murica and has dual citizenship (yeah, I swing both ways baby!), I have to agree with a lot of the sentiment here. The picks are creating so much bias, but you have to pick something, right? Honestly, Brits thinks Murica is one thing stylistically and Americans think Europe is another. We all assume stereotypes that reinforce our assumptions of cultural differences. I honestly don't see much difference between the two anymore and Im not convinced mountain bikes or cycling generally was really that different from US to EU. Think the US is loud and obnoxious? Lets look back to the early 90's. I think there is an awesome shot of Greg Herbold in god awful pink jumpsuit and on the other side of the pond, Jez Avery was sporting Hammer pants in full tiger print and rabbit ears on his Etto helmet. Perhaps US has been doing loud longer, anyone remember Trimble bikes? Whoooa!
  • - 12
flag thenotoriousmic (May 6, 2016 at 14:47) (Below Threshold)
@mintysauce if your British why do you have an American flag by your name?
  • + 7
If your old enough to drive a car, and still ride a bike, your a dork to the general public. Deal with it. So almost no one here gets a vote. Were pickin a winner at the special olymipcs here.
  • + 8
Not sure about tld I've never liked the racing pyjama look, there helmet designs are over complex and lastly the price is the real problem with it.
  • + 2
Definitely. Gaudy is the word I'd use for 99% of their designs.
  • + 8
There's no option for British Columbia style? Cove, Knolly, Banshee, Rocky Mountain, 7mesh, chromag!! All pretty fly stylin.
  • + 9
Wow, the "fill content" in-between WC coverage is getting out of hand
  • + 6
Me ! I'm a british canadian living on the north shore - white skinny legs, orange socks and ride like a chicken shit orangutan with brain damage. I am MTB's hottest trend for 2017. You heard it here first
  • + 4
I think there are definitely way different american styles to be fair. The So-Cal moto inspired stuff has never been my cup of tea, but i think the simplicity of other brands like dakine and bell represent "cool" american style way better. also ellsworth, like come on guys does anyone really think ellsworth should ever be in the same sentence as style?!
  • + 6
 Love Dakine for style.
  • + 6
Never been crazy about the moto styling myself. Obviously the protection and coverage for DH riding has its purpose, but the way brands like Fox and TLD plaster their logos across the whole product, or use hideous patterns like camo definitely turn me away. For clothing, I get much more use out of stuff from the skiing/climbing/mountaineering brands like Marmot, Patagonia etc... because they serve the same function, and I can wear them year-round, whatever the sport may be.
  • + 7
I think they should have done enduro style. It would have pissed more people off. That's the point of this right?
  • + 7
What happened to just riding your bike and not giving a flying fuck what anyone thought!
  • + 1
It has never been the case... repeat 3 times that you don't care and it means you care about looking like you don't care. Simple philosophical exercise
  • + 4
What bothers me is when the trail conversation is all about new bikes, new gear, how much money you spent, how you need a new kit...blah blah blah. Sure, we are all capitalist consumers. But it irks me when the talk is so focused on it. Man, talk to me about the trail, or how smooth you felt that ride.
  • + 2
@WAKIdesigns: Maybe not the case with your generation.
  • + 0
@sflanagan21: if you play this card then I can only tell you that in 90:s internet barely existed and only style you could watch was in magazines. These were the awesome times where someone could tell you some horse sht and you couldn't check it without going to library each day for a month. I started riding in 1999, in 2001 I got my first "real" bike, until 2005 I didn't give a sht about any style, because I couldn't afford anything. I could save 3$ a week. Now I buy a brand new bike, every two years and I feel much better for it.
  • + 4
@WAKIdesigns: Not sure what card ya think I'm playing my man. I was racing BMX in the 80's and started mountain biking in the mid 90's on a mongoose that I bought at Wal-mart, needles to say it only lasted a couple of weeks before I snapped the frame. My first "real" bike was a Trek Y Glide and it literally changed my life. I now own 3 bikes, AM bike, jump bike and DH rig. My point is that I don't give a shit about what anyone thinks about my bikes or any of my gear for that matter and it's ridiculous nowadays how biking has become a fashion trend for a lot of people. I live in Mammoth Lakes, Ca and I ride with both an old school and new school crew and none of us chat about the next "cool" thing in biking, we just f*cking ride! I'm more-less ranting because I see the "cool kids" riding on a daily basis no matter where I ride. Trust me I'm excited that the sport that I love dearly has grown expediently in the last several years but the level of "coolness" is out of control. People should just go out and ride to be riding because it's FUN not because they think it's cool to own the next so called best piece of gear or bike. Again, that $150 mongoose changed my life back in the mid 90's and I know for a fact that I was having more fun than anyone else on that trail that day. Ride to have fun, not to look cool...
  • + 1
@sflanagan21: some people do it to look cool. I don't care. I honestly don't. I know a few pimps who ride much better than me. We all look for attention in different places, we all want to be loved and appreciated.

Cheers
  • + 4
What a shit article more and more mountain biking is becoming about pansying around in the right gear with a flash bike and buying the new super duper internals to wank about, rather than actually riding
  • + 3
Pinkbike, proving once again they can get 1000s of page views for advertisers without any real f*cking content.

See, when mainstream media guys came to PB I was hoping they'd adapt to the PB model of awesome, rich content but alas it does appear as though the naysayers were right and instead PB was bringing on folks to teach them the ways of monetizing their audience with watered-down content. *sigh*
  • + 3
Okay, it's really not cool to compare the YT Tues, one of the sexiest rigs of all time to the Ellsworth. Where's the love for Santa Cruz / Ibis / Yeti??? Let's get the SB6c, the Tracer, and the Ripley up there!

it's also sort of unfair to leave the Canyon lineup out of this comparison; they're beautiful as well.

I think that dh to dh, trail to trail, xc to xc, it's pretty even.
  • + 2
The look of a rider will never be 'Cool'. It's either too functional or trying too hard to be 'Cool' to actually be 'Cool'. We have different styles of bikes, kit and lifestyle associated with how we ride our bikes but none of it is what you would call 'Cool' or 'Stylish'. Each has style or follows a particular fashion but it's not 'Cool'. We all have style driven by how we ride, through our kit choices and brand allegiances but that still doesn't mean 'Cool'. The only thing that is cool about biking is the feeling of riding. Always has been, always will be.
  • + 4
Judging by the pics I went for euro but in the end mountainbiking will never be cool to the people who don't understand or do it. At least where I live anyway...
  • + 3
"'Murica is cool as bro, always has been"
What the f*ck does this even mean?
Clearly it was written by someone who's primary language ISN'T English.
Either that, or he/she repeatedly failed Reading Comprehension.
  • + 2
This topic is just there to stoke some disagreement, is it? The US is big, Europe is big, there has always been good and bad stuff from both sides. It seems like PB has spent too much time sticking their nose in the bad stuff? YT has been around for quite a few years now, they actually had a Tues before the Tues2. There was a 26" Tues2 before they came with the 27.5" Tues2. A few years from now PB will discover Ancillotti and claim Europe is making a comeback.
  • + 2
I once rode with a 72-year-old retired german school teacher. He didn't speak any english, rode an old hardtail, wasn't super fast, but had infinitely more swag than I'll ever have. #euroswag
  • + 1
How come the first bike pictured is a dh rig? And also includes the v10 after pb just asked if dh is dead? How much of pb has been dedicated to UCI dh racing. The bruni gwin rivalry is making dh more alive and geneating more eyes on pb then there had been before.... yt tues is the flagship of yt. I am willing to bet they sell more tues than jeffsys
  • + 3
Is it safe to say that euro is too lycra and meruca too baggy and canada hits the sweet spot? Idk, im just sayin, im neither of the 3.
  • + 1
is that a "new" Ellsworth or one from 2001? I can't tell. On another note, is it me or does it seem that the Europeans have an easier time getting their hands on American bikes than Americans getting their hands on euro bikes? Perhaps if we could ride more stuff from across the pond (like a Canyon), we'd think it's cool. But when you have amazing options from Santa Cruz, Ibis, Yeti, Evil, Kona, specialized and so on, you're not left exactly wanting. Just thinking out loud.
  • + 4
Troy Lee Designs - WTF? They are cheap low quality design with crazy graphics all over them - uncool imho
  • + 1
Yes but they fit me perfectly.
  • + 6
 This is stupid ..
  • + 3
 The right answer: Cascadia

Race Face, Evil, Transition, Chromag, Kona....

Northshore trails, flannels, best post-ride beers in the world.....

Yup.
  • + 2
 Amen brother
  • + 1
Banshee has killer design too ^^
  • + 1
 Word. Cascadia Now.
  • + 2
 > "best post-ride beers in the world"

Heresy. I will excuse your comment as ignorance of the clearly superior Norwegian beer culture.
  • + 1
When comes to MTB it was and still USA is leading - Specialized, Cannondale, Yeti, GT, Trek, Santa Cruz. But EU is pushing hard - Canyon, BMC, Scott, Lappiere and some niche players like YT. At the end of the day the big winner is Taiwan Smile
  • + 1
Ellswoth? really? I smell biased article. Why use Ellsworth in the same context as "good style" unless you want to negatively influence this post against the USA. I say take out Ellsworth and add Evil or Canfield Brothers.

Of if you insist on keeping Ellsworth, then trade out any of the Euro bikes with any Orange Cycles bike and call it even.
  • + 1
I'd say the winners and duds from both continents probably equal out. Pacific North West might take the win though (both sides of the border). My relatively affordable RM Altitude with various RaceFace components looks a hell of a lot more stylish than comparable bikes.
  • + 4
The only people who care about style are tools and people in the industry. Just ride and wear what works.
  • + 1
dude, style is everything. fashion is something totally different. don't confuse style with fashion. any consumer can buy fashion, but style is something you are born with.
  • + 2
@stacykohut: unless you have been abused by lycra on your chin
  • + 4
 Serious Question

Who cares?
  • + 4
Nobody cares about the question. PB cares about the page views so they can collect $$ from their advertisers.

Tomorrow's poll: What's more Enduro - hamsters or guinea pigs? Wink
  • + 2
@vikb: hamsters go for ever on them wheels so definately more enduro
  • + 1
@Mrstamper: Ya I figured as much. Just got the blue fur dye kit. Wink
  • + 0
Poll is flawed. If your going to offer up Europe a continent plus the UK, then you should compare against another continent, NORTH America, not just USA. Personally though, I think its impossible to choose theres so many cool products. Best places to ride now theres a one sided contest.
  • + 3
I feel like PinkBike nerfed the American corner... The only thing looking stylish is the Yeti.
  • + 1
Mountain bikers are, without doubt, among the least stylish people in the known universe. Any bloke who finds himself riding a turquoise bike with colour coded shoes and fork decals needs to have a serious word with himself.
  • + 1
Hmmmmm, the Yanks can walk into any store and purchase any one of those products, the Euro folk will have to go OnLine to get even close to half of our offerings....Still, there is No cool like YT cool.....
  • + 4
you people buy special clothes to ride bikes in?
  • + 3
I love pinkbike polls but lately have not been a fan of the answers for us to choose
  • + 0
TLD has had some sick threads in the past. I definitely had to vote for the last option. Ive got a bad ass jersey that is black neon green and purple with an eye in the middle of it. sickest jersey ever but when i showed up to my girls T-ball game i dont think the rest of the old a$$ partents thought it was as cool as i did but when your squeezing in as much single track as you can and still making your other obligations you just got roll with the sick MTB style when no one else gets it.
  • + 0
Europe has way better style on the street in general. On the bike is a different story, Euro bikes and clothing are so terribly loud and 'graphicy' it makes me sick. Terrible.
  • + 1
The lines have blurred. It's a global fashion disaster with good and bad everywhere. NOW -PLEASE- TRY TO GET SOME CRUZFEST MOTIONPICTURES UP IN THIS BITCH!!!!
  • + 2
Canyon can't be surpassed from an aesthetic perspective...they make amazingly good looking bikes
  • + 2
Canyon, like many other German brands, are the European answer to Chinese copycats. Disgusting
  • + 1
I just got a MET Parachute and it's a little ugly but way nicer than my Super 2R. And the chin bar actually sits by my chin, so I'm not sure what's up in that pic.
  • + 2
"We're all mountain bike geeks and not a single one of us has ever been cool" I love the unanimity!
  • - 1
That ellsworth definitely is a gross looking bike and they screwed up the picture with a white back round instead of nature like the other bikes. Now seeing a side by side of the v10 and m19 i realize that they are almost identical in frame build.
  • + 0
As an American Industrial Designer, I appreciate the design/aesthetics of the POC helmets but IMO it doesn't fit. Don't even get me started on that V10 and demo. America wins.
  • + 3
@kona34 ID here as well. Pinkbike is a tough place to have a design/brand lecture. Too much "26 TIL I DIE" type sentiment to have an objective critical non-biased discussion.

The V10 has the best mix of stance and styling in a downhill machine anywhere. The YT tends to be more photogenic with the larger tubes and flashy graphics but the V10 is a highly evolved and refined machine.
  • + 3
The troll answers always lead the polls lol.
  • + 1
all bikes and gear now days are a copy of one another, nothing really new or innovative. and we all really look like geeks when it comes down to it in the end.

Ellsworth...........The Ted Cruz of American bike style!

Lets see that 2016 Lapierre Spicy, no way in hell anyone european or otherwise can support that humpback stack of crap.

Transition Bike Co. Style for miles!!!

What in the f*ck? Is there just that little amount of mountain bike related content going on that we have this on the front page? Lol just f*cking with us eh pinkbike? Lol

Sorry but there is no fucking way anything from POC goes on my head. It is like a plastic head condom.
  • + 2
 What,like a swim cap?

I tend to like Mavic's design. On bike and on body. Even there website is well designed.

Euro for bikes and components, 'murica for clothing and helmets. Missing this answer so i had to go Euro but not so accurate.

North shore style for the win!

TLD D3, plaid shirt, denim on a transition tr450. its pnw style, and thats the style i like

It's the euro helmets that are so horrible. May as well go back to not wearing visors in WC DH.

not sure why this is even a topic...

 Writers block?

Great, another Pinkbike sponsored subtle, and not so subtle " 'Murica" bashing session.

I bet I know the political opinion of the majority of Pinkbike employees.
Good for you! They'll "accept" you soon!
