Photo of the Year

The 7th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest powered by SRAM is underway. The winner will join John Wellburn, Toby Cowley, Sterling Lorence, Christoph Laue, Sean Lee and Steve Shannon in the Pinkbike Photo of the Year Hall of Fame. After all your nomination votes and a lot of spirited debate, the nominees have been narrowed down to 32 and we are ready to get started. Without further ado, here are the photos vying for the $10,000 CDN in CASH.

How Does it Work?

From thousands of nominated photos, 32 have been selected to be pitted against one other in a college basketball, bracket-like showdown. At this point, it is up to you, the users, to vote on the match-ups. The photos with the most votes will move on to the next round. So 32 photos will narrow down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there is a single photo deemed the winner.

Holy hell that wasn't hard on the eyes
  • + 58
But holy crap it's gonna be hard on the brain to decide... EYE CANDY Drool
  • + 35
That's some of the most incredible photography and composition I've ever seen. MTB-related or not, these are beautiful and every single one of those photographers are incredibly talented. Thanks for the 32 wallpapers. Cheers.
  • - 1
 2 words... Goblin Drop
  • + 6
@NYShred: and now see how the roost shot makes it to the finals.
  • + 3
@fercho25: To be fair that shot with the roost is incredible. Yes there is roost but what grabs the attention is how dynamic the rider looks - the roost is definately secondary...
  • + 1
Not even one classic roost photo! But that's because most riders are in the air...
  • + 7
When voting does anyone else take into consideration how hard it was to get just the right shot? I find that weighs heavily on my voting as I know from experience how hard it can be for just the right conditions, and being there at the right place at the right time with the perfect light VS. just going to the local DJ area with a light and taking a bunch of action shots, which, still awesome in their own light but not to the level of alot of the photos submitted...
  • + 1
@Slabrung: Fake news! There is 1 ! Thankful this year as well that there is only 1.
  • + 2
@NYShred: once I photoshop out the RedBull logo, that pic will be in the wallpaper rotation for sure. Smile
  • + 8
hey we can all applaud the fact that there are no visible E bikes on the top 32, eh?
  • + 1
Is there a way to download the full resolution photo, the largest I can get is 1600...
  • + 9
@slimboyjim: yeah but still holds the same problem that all roost shots over the years had, while I agree to a certain extent this is more about the photograper abilities other than rider abilities, a good photographer is one that is able to accentuate riding ability, and roost shots are the opposite of this for the simple reason that is not natural riding. no one does this unless you want to destroy a berm, so grabbing your camera and telling your buddy "hey go F up that berm while I shoot pictures" makes it imposible to qualify as a good riding shot regardless of how good the photography is.
  • + 1
@FrozenTreads56: yes we can and should
  • + 2
 @fercho25:thats one big false
  • + 2
Nathan Hughes; I decided it was the POTY the moment I saw it. He even sent me the full resolution file to use as a wallpaper; something that professional photographers very rarely do.
  • + 1
Andy Lloyd, "this place looks amazing, and damn I get to bike here!" Looks like the backdrop to a Sega Genesis game!
  • + 100
Annoying that some of my favourites go against each other....
  • + 12
Agreed, I love a good landscape and quite a few of the best ones are head to head
  • + 13
Absolutely. It was like extreme dirt jumper kid vs extreme dirt jumper kid, and really cool biker/landscape vs really cool biker/landscape. I'll take the latter every time, but I'd like to see them pitted against each other - you know, extreme dirt jumper kid vs really cool biker/landscape. And, let the cards fall as they may.
  • + 16
@MikerJ: Exactly....all the options were jumper vs jumper when it should have been jumper vs trail rider. It would have been interesting to see how that played out. I'll take somebody trail riding in awesome terrain every time but I may be in the minority on PB.

flag AntN (Jan 30, 2018 at 18:29) (Below Threshold)
@k2rider1964: whilst I found it annoying having favs vs each other I think the head to head choices are pretty good. I love a sic whip shot over any lame xc forrest shot anyday... So to have whip vs whip and forest xc vs forest xc makes sense... as the 'best of the genre' moves forward.
  • + 9
Match up 12 and 14. I loved all four of these. Wished they had been pair with some others that I didn’t really want to pick but forced to.

All around amazing shots. Glad to see so many trail shots this year.
  • + 5
@k2rider1964: based on most these photos, you would assume mountain biking was more aviation than shredding
  • + 8
There should be a vote in for your dismissed faves round near the end. You get one vote for one that didn't make it. Tally those up and let those go head to head for a prize.
  • + 2
@rrolly: The most popular photo will win regardless with the head-to-head format of this contest, as it always has. Second place might not be the second most popular photo, but this is a winner-takes-all contest.

But... I'd like to see a photographers' choice award too. The 32 finalists vote for their favourite shot (or top 2) in a straight popularity vote and that photo gets an extra prize. Deep Summer does this I think. If I was a finalist that award would mean more to me than the public vote.
  • + 3
@Lornholio: there's a runner-up prize, so not winner take all. In past years I've often been disappointed with some of the quarter final shots compared to what was left off in earlier votes.

I like the idea of a photographer's choice though.
  • + 3
This. Serioulsy? You put the Rossland BC photo against the Munsyari photo? Those two are REALLY good and it sucks to eliminate one in the first round!

Some seriously amazing shots in this contest. Hard to pick on a lot of them. Nice work!
  • + 4
Matchups 11, 12, and 14 were my top 6 all paired up against each other. Not cool PB.
  • + 3
@rrolly: Aha, I thought it was just one grand prize but you're right. The head-to-head/bracketing system doesn't suit runner up prizes. I guess this format lets Pinkbike stretch the voting out to several weeks and 5 news stories which ultimately makes them more money, eh?

A wildcard entry format into deeper rounds of the contest might work in the future. Start with 24 photos, 12 winners go through to the next round plus the 4 losers of the closest first round matchups and then everything gets reshuffled, something like that.

But yeah, photographers' choice award. Come on Pinkbike, I'm sure the finalists would all like it.
  • + 2
@steveperry: #14 is brutal! Sucks that one of those won't make it out of the first round.
  • + 1
@steveperry: for me it was matchups 12 and 13, all insanely good shots though (:
  • + 1
@aks2017: So glad that the David Cachon and JB Liautard pics weren't matched up...
  • + 1
Boy, and I thought the first round was rough...it just keeps getting harder
  • + 35
Just confused why the squared up basic whip shots made it.... Almost seems biased based on name...
  • + 3
they aren't chosen to win, they are chosen to appease the masses who enjoy such things.
  • + 1
@darkmuncan: But to win they have to appease the masses?
  • + 26
Does the inclusion of the Mateusz Szachowski shot with dead-on-center composition absolutely baffle anyone else?

I also think www.pinkbike.com/photo/15404132 should've made the list.
  • + 4
 Amazing photo
  • + 18
The hard and fast rules of photography should always be followed! Except when they're meant to be broken. I think it looks good. The background trees kind of form a cool pattern that allows the rider to pop.
  • + 2
How? I'd love to see a sequence or video of that!
  • + 1
Rule of thirds, in the vertical direction.
  • + 1
@usdep243: what is this rule of turds, i so often hear about?
  • + 10
I love rule of thirds but this angle suited me best as it was shot in a dark conditions and my set-up for this one (Nikon D7200 and kit 70-300 lens) didn't make it easier to grab much light into it, so in order to not crop and loose on quality I sniped it from distance. BTW it was shot on 16m+ jump at Loosefest where the rider would just fade into the pic even with bright colours Smile

I just liked how the trees made a little bit of pattern illusion as I was quite stoned when taking this one, tripping balls on freeride mayhem of Fest Series!
  • - 2
@szach: +1 for the photo. -1 for the drug use.
  • + 2
Love that shot. My favourites always make me wonder where the rider is headed, or how he got to that spot, ect. Makes me run through line choices and feel like i'm in the photo. Instead of the really obvious only-riding-there-because-of-photo..
  • + 5
@rrolly: can't believe I hear it from a Canadian but I respect all the choices if they are not hurting anyone Smile Still, thanks for the props!
  • + 3
@johncee: Thanks! I try to diverse my shots and look for something extra each time - yet photography is not my income maker so I can keep it fun and space out each time I push the trigger. Simply the most amazing feeling right now for me when people see my work and get stoked even though I am probably the only one here shooting DX due to costs reason Smile Would be lovely to win so I can match it with my savings and buy some better gear. If you are looking for more - give @szachimat on Instagram a try
  • + 2
Agree, it's an impressive jump but the photo doesn't create any emotions.
  • + 1
@Bergsmannen: hoped for peeps to feel calm after watching it, would match the same shot on a wider angle next to it to give perspective how huge it was. Bas was simply oozing with precision on these monsters
  • + 2
@szach: Yes a wide angle lens would give it some perspective. Keep up the good work.
  • + 4
@szach: I respect people, but not all their choices. When people put it out there that they use drugs, they often look for acceptance in that (not always, but often). I just want to throw it out there that there are a lot of us who ride and don't smoke/injest/inject. Not because we're any better human beings, but because that stuff does a lot of damage. I can't count the number of destroyed lives around me caused by drug use. Not to get too heavy here, but I really don't want to go to anymore funerals of people under thirty.
  • + 22
Please POY, don´t be roost, just don´t be that roost again..
  • + 5
Homie there's one borderline roost shot in the mix, which is a mad shot regardless...
  • + 13
@N-60: Borderline? There's nothing borderline about that. That's a full-on, glorious, dust storm of a roost! Long live the roost! Roost muthaf@#$as! Roost!

And there's no way that shot doesn't make the final 4.
  • + 1
 @TheR: Good point actually!
  • + 1
@N-60: That pic is incredible. Feel like I'm about to get run over if I look at it too long...
  • + 20
I thought "the Andy Lloyd shot - nothing too spectacular about that"

Then I saw the reflection in the pond.

Brilliant!
  • + 2
agreed. I didn't catch the reflection until I looked at for the second time
  • + 4
Actually I saw the reflection first as I knew the photographer will defo make use of that, spent few seconds looking for the rider. haha
  • + 2
@ugez: Shame it had to go against the shot that it did. Both were excellent. Instead we move forward with more huge air shots. Boring...
  • + 1
not a pond the photographer put a trough of water in front of the camera and got the angle right so it would look like a pond
  • + 1
@dirtmiester: You are thinking of a different shot by JB. Have a second look at Andy Lloyd's
  • + 10
Tell you what, that ain’t Guildford in the UK. It’s a great shot, but please don’t think there’s riding like that in Guildford. Wouldn’t want anyone to be disappointed. ????

Inspiration right there to ride the winter mikes to get those summer smiler!
  • + 11
You didn’t know about the jumps behind Marks & Spencers? Wink
  • + 1
Lots of the locations were clearly wrong. Maybe it's where the photographer is from or something?
  • + 11
Strange again that in some matches are two strong photos and others are two weak ones
  • + 7
exactly!! So annoying to pick between my favorites in rd 1 and then have to pick a winner outta 2 shit options
  • + 4
this.. many favourites of mine will be gone after round 1 already. Still amazing work by everybody.
  • + 8
I'll put it out there again, Pinkbike could you try to setup a process for us to be able to buy high quality prints of photos from the Photographers? I know not all would participate, and that some photos they can't sell prints of, but I'm sure many of the photographers would benefit from an easy way to purchase prints.
  • + 1
 Yes please! @pinkbikeaudience, hear us!
  • + 6
 just contact the photog directly!
  • + 5
@ReubenKrabbe: I've tried in the past and found most of them unresponsive and/or not set up to handle individual prints easily for one random customer. This has been more for snowboard photographers, who now have a website that does sell work from quite a few of them. I just thought that if Pinkbike could setup an easy to use marketplace of sorts for people interested in photos they see on the website it would benefit everyone. Although I know a lot of people have no idea what a quality photographic print costs and don't know how much business it would create.
  • + 1
 Prints available here:
www.andylloyd.photography
Although might not be the prints that you want!
  • + 9
Took a few minutes to vote with my fiancee. Our favorite ones are trail rider with beautiful landscapes. Good luck to all the amazing photographers
  • - 1
I can see why people would like the landscape shots but to me this is a bike photography comp and not a landscape one...I wanna see action, momentum and general feelings that you could only get because if the inclusion of a bike and rider pushing themselves, most of these landscape shots are incredible but not because the riding makes it so (in my opinion of course)
  • + 3
@aliclarkson: I see your point. I guess my votes went toward riders with nice landscape because that's the reason that get me out on my mountain bike. unfortunatly i don't have huge mountains nearby. so whenever i do a roadtrip to go to such mountains when at the top I take a good look at everything around and it just feels good to me. I do love to push myself on every trails I ride but my love for the sports comes from beautiful landscapes.
  • + 3
@aliclarkson: That's why I voted for Isac Paddock's shot of Gwin. You can see the focus in his eyes and almost feel how fast he must have been going.
  • + 5
It would be better if i'll have an option to not voting for some pairs. In some cases i was just wondering why they are finalist... In other cases, choosing between two beautiful picture... was painful in this early stage.
  • + 8
www.pinkbike.com/photo/15549397 should be in the top 32
  • + 7
David Cachon's needs the black point adjusted which is annoying me because it's such a sick picture.
  • + 5
Though I have nothing against them, and some are great shots, I feel like whips might end up being the next roost. "Waaah! No more whip photos!!!" Some things are timeless. Until they're not.
  • + 7
Can we give Satchel Cronk a prize no matter what?
  • + 4
I was thinking Ale has to win, best mane ever, then scrolled further & when met with Satchel Cronk :-) so pleased!
  • + 6
Ewald Sadie has this in the bag!! Only roost shot in the bunch.
  • + 6
Is Bruno Long's shot a double exposure? What's going on there?
  • + 11
Look at it upside down and it might make a bit more sense.
  • + 4
Holy mother, all is awesome but David Cachon add Robb Thompson was the best!
  • + 1
i hate that its a match up bracket like that. i cant vote for my top 16 because sometimes you vote for a match up and then go to the next and your like i like both of these more than the one i just voted for in the previous match up.
  • + 3
Oh how I hate/love Photo of the Year time! So many damn great shots. That Andy Lloyd picture though. Gave me goosebumps man, goose-f'n-bumps!!
  • + 2
All awesome! In future years, it would be interesting to seed these photos using a straight up 100 person popular vote. That way, some of the strongest pictures (IMO) are not going head-to-head.
  • + 0
 please pinkbike! these matchups blow
  • + 1
JUSSI!!! If you've got a spare 10 minutes - watch his winning slideshow from the WSSF in 2016

vimeo.com/163188837.

Pretty amazing how someone who picked up a camera later in life has developed such a distinguished and unique style
  • + 3
I look forward to this every year. Awesome photos and sweet alias Satchel Cronk! That night photo with the lights is mesmerizing.
  • + 1
Frown Some of my favorites didn't make it to this next round. A little surprising, but expected. There are still enough to make me happy... heck, all of them are cool. My two absolute favorites swept the competition, so I'm happy.
  • + 3
yeah they should a voting on what pictures go against each other or do a redo after voting match up..
  • + 4
 that lake reflection is dope!
  • + 4
 Calvin Huths for sure! #nobaddays
  • + 0
Whilst the photos this year are excellent and not taking away anything from the photographers, I feel there is a bit of quality loss from the previous years entries?

personally only 3 or 4 this year really grab my attention, last year was 15+.
  • + 3
Ian Collins your pic is mint!....shit they're all really good, it's so difficult to judge.
  • + 4
how is this not in finals
www.pinkbike.com/photo/15541822
  • + 4
How is that Trumpmore photo from Vermont?
  • + 6
Unless entered at the time of upload the photo location defaults to the location you have listed for your PB profile. Home for me happens to be VT, so you'll see a lot of my photos are listed as such despite being shot all over the place. This particular one is from Madeira
  • + 3
@davetrumpore: Haha--I voted for you Dave but also had the same thought as HCorey, Vermont looks a bit different nowadays...
  • + 1
@OceanPhil: lol Now that makes sense. I was having the same thoughts... that's Vermont? Where? Boy, sure is different...
  • + 1
@davetrumpore: Ya I was going to say UK is looking pretty dry! Wink (Rupert's shot)
  • + 2
Anyone notice that the second photo from match up 10 and the first photo from match up 15 where both at the Bike Ranch in Kamloops B.C.
  • + 3
well that was hard, some matches are total opposites
i wonder if locations will sway votes?
  • + 1
I was thinking the same thing. Initially I wanted locations attached but then realized it might sway opinion. Might be nice to know after the fact or something.

Edit: **Ignore me, you can see the location when you click on the pic**
  • + 2
@ianswilson815: i know i had a few toss ups where i couldn't pick one or the other.. i went with whichever was local
  • + 3
Sad that Laue and Huth were pitted against each other, I think they both should be in the top four at least!
  • + 2
Match-up 14 is so unfair. One of my favourites is guaranteed to get knocked out in the first round...
  • + 2
some bangers in there, match up 11 was tough, two of my favs up against each other straight away
  • + 1
 I know right?! Tough choice...
  • + 3
Lot of quality pics in the fight this year!
  • + 1
I like the one above the last "Vote Here" link.
  • + 3
I would have any of these pictures on my wall.
  • + 2
I look forward to these. Serious props to all contestants for their commitment and work capturing these images.
  • + 2
Nice picture.I voted last year and I won the Sram Eagle, this year i only need the brakes Smile ))
  • + 2
So that means that if you win, you can send me the Eagle, right? Wink
  • + 1
hard job to choose only one, amazing photos from Margus Riga, Christophe Lau, Harookz, David Cachon, Nathan Hughes, Luke Jarmey
  • + 2
some of selection i cannot understand. Like Dan Millner's photo. Nomination due to name?
  • + 3
Some of the most incredible photography. Everyone wins.
  • + 2
Ohhhh Yeah!!! Some Vermont action happening Smile Nice shot Dave Trumpore!!!!
  • + 2
A lot of these were difficult to pic between. Going to be a very close competition
  • + 3
How are we supposed to pick just one?
  • + 2
match up 14 wasn't even fair. Probably the best 2 of em all. in the first round. c'mon !!!!
  • + 0
Videos require so much more shooting and editing, not to talk about the costs of equipment, software and logistics. Yes, pictures are pretty too, but the videographers sure could use some of those awards and recognition.
  • + 2
Every Monday pinkbike post tons of videos on the front page. No video of the year but from where I'm sitting videos get a hell of a lot more love than photos on a daily basis. Also it's not like these guy just went out with a iPhone and took these with no effort. Some of these photos probably have more time and effort put in than many edits out there.
  • + 2
Satchel cronk by far the best one I think....
  • + 1
 Name, yes!
  • + 2
Gwin , wheels in line = fast
  • + 1
February: the only month I read pinkbike on my computer instead of my phone...
  • + 3
 Where's Paris ? :'(
  • + 13
Apparently, not far from where you live.
  • + 1
#11 should not have been paired up against each other so early. Both those photos would have made it to a finals round.
  • + 1
I don’t know what you guys are talking about! I didn’t see any roosters in these photos...
  • + 2
One of the best thing to happen on Pinkbike every year! Diving in !
  • + 2
Maybe there should be 10 winners....
  • + 1
My brain hurts from having to choose. Good luck all, some really sweet shots this year.
  • + 2
It's Jussi Grznar not Jussig Grznar.
  • + 9
 How about Juss Gnar!
  • + 2
 Edited - thanks!
  • + 1
Jus' Grizz-Gnar... the name alone should win it. So good.
  • + 2
Juss Gnar is good but how about some respect for Satchel Cronk!
  • + 2
I let my 2 year old daughter vote. She has good tastes.
  • + 2
Robb Thompson.... So much atmosphere. Love it.
  • + 2
 *Definitely not shot on iphone
  • + 2
Only one roost shot. I’m outraged!!
  • + 0
ya but you may as well forget it as the roost shot always wins for some reason!
  • + 1
Oh HELL yes Ewald Sadie, the elusive ROOST! Also it's not fair to have AG in your pics...
  • + 1
ayy all three of my nominees got in, and I thought I was submitting unique photos. :/
  • + 1
how can you vote something like this, they are all good Smile )
  • + 1
Not gonna lie, that roost shot is pretty sick.
  • + 2
 Robb Thomson.
  • + 2
 Zuan all the way! Wow
  • + 1
I just came here for the roost.
  • + 1
Wow, can't we just make them all equal winners??!
  • + 2
 Cronk! Amazing
  • + 1
The winner will be Filip Zuan OR Tyler Roemer Wink
  • + 1
I have a feeling I know which of those is going to win
  • + 1
This is not going to be an easy choice..Some great photo's !!!
  • + 1
Satchel Cronk zoomed of Robin O'Neill ? )
  • + 1
Satchel Cronk wins the photog name!
  • + 2
 So good!
  • + 1
Sorry @pinkbike I can't vote, they are all so f*cking nice!
  • + 1
I am feeling very confident in my votes.
  • - 2
I was already disappointed in a important vote not too long ago, please don't take this one from me!
#NotMyPresident #ThatWasSoUncool
  • + 1
word, chill out dog, this is biking not politics
  • + 1
 that rubber duck!
  • + 2
That was the deciding factor for me in that matchup...love the whimsy
  • + 0
finally, the popular vote actually matters
  • + 1
 What? No Dave Smith?
  • + 1
 Total sausagefest
  • + 1
