Bring the best racers together, sprinkle in a little rain and you've got a hell of a race. A storybook ending for a pair of brothers from New Zealand to start the year off, leaving the season favorites behind to claw back up the standings at later races.

Great edit! It is great to see how the media coverage for EWS events is getting better every year!
  • + 15
 I'll second that. Great show.
  • + 6
 What a FANTASTIC video.
  • + 5
 A. Love the media coverage!
B. Any chance you guys can add a little more track detail similar to the UCI and more coverage of the actual riding as well? i feel as though EWS picks one spot on each stage and thats it. RedBull TV does a great job at covering races for the most part, i would love to see EWS go in this direction as well.

With all of that said, this is a HUGE improvement over years past. Thank you SOOOOOOOOO much for covering these events and sharing these awesome races with the world.
  • + 1
I take it you didn't see last year then? They've added terrible music, awful split screen and horrible over use of slo mo. This is a poor first effort
  • + 1
@charles0210: are you watching the same thing as me? Last year was good, this is awful, horrible music and so much slow mo it's painful and no decent footage, a massive backward step.
  • + 1
How many pinkbikers does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: none, they are all saying how RAD this new darkness is.
  • + 88
Great vid, stoked for EWS time! Miss the charisma of Richard Cunynghame though.
  • + 10
Couldn't agree more ... he's off downhill and now he's off enduro. Damn ;/
  • + 58
Is anyone else a bit disappointed by the highlights? No question that the editing was brilliant and video did well to convey the riding done, but I definitely would have wanted to see more interviews in more information on how everyone was doing (not even an interview with Ed Masters for example?). Seems like a step down from the 30ish minutes of highlights we got at the end of last season.
  • + 20
Agreed! Why cut the time down? Maybe good to have a bite size version for the casual viewer but I could happily sit through an hour man!
  • + 6
It seems like they want the job done more or less and go ahead. Is not just reach the great benchmark Cuninngham left, they aproach should be go even further and try different and innovate in any possible way. Is the only way to get something better or at least as good in my opinion... This is a competition in constant evolution and we want the same for media...
  • + 4
15 minutes with only few seconds of riding :-( Isn't enduro all about riding?
  • + 2
There was an interview with him......short but it was there.
  • + 0
@dirtydawgnz: Not after the race was over and he knew he was third though.
  • + 2
My guess is the amount of time to make the edit. They are trying to get them out as quickly as possible and more content means more lag.
  • + 3
Isnt there a TV highlight show on the way? maybe this is the cut down version? www.mbr.co.uk/news/tracy-moseley-ews-tv-357106
  • + 2
There was an article a couple weeks ago with EWS bragging about selling the 30min edit to a TV-station/broadcaster. Ofc they now can´t put that 30min show online for free anymore.
  • + 4
@salespunk: Then they should lag it, lose the rubbish music and stop with the damn slow-mo
  • + 2
@JohSch: How can we get the 30 mins version? these highlights are rubbish to say the least. Whoever is producing it this year has lost the plot completely
  • + 2
A lame effort, footage poor, horrible music, terrible slow motion and zero narrative to the event, way to ruin it ews
  • + 1
 @jimmythehat: www.pinkbike.com/news/enduro-world-series-signs-tv-deal-and-announces-new-presenters-2017.html

"The Enduro World Series (EWS) is delighted to announce it’s coming to a TV screen near you thanks to a new partnership with IMG for mainstream television distribution of its race highlight shows. IMG are one of the world’s largest distributors of sports media and so will be able to bring enduro to a whole new TV audience across the globe. The three-year deal will see the EWS create a 24-minute highlight show from each of this year’s races exclusively for IMG distribution, as well as an end of season round up video."
  • + 1
@JohSch: sure and where is it?
  • + 40
 Richard Cunynghame? anyone?
  • + 30
Forgot to give props to the team making this edit....by far the best EWS edit ever seen.....very very good !
  • + 2
 Terrible effort in my view
  • + 30
 RATBOY having great time !!
  • + 2
yeah, nice to hear that guy !
  • + 25
Katie Winton nailed it at the end, the best riders got on it with it, despite the mud and rain, and they prob posted the best times
  • + 12
A winter training in the Tweed Valley slop helped I am sure . Great ride Katy. :-)
  • + 6
 impressive attitude by her
  • + 16
And #wheelieWednesday continues, massive props to Mr Wyntastic.....Kiwis round the world are walking tall
  • + 12
Weird that the last 3 stages, the usual suspects where taking the stages, Maybe the weather did actually had an effect on the result. Also Sam Hill taking the win on the most physical stage, he must had some serious off season preparation and he was also smiling at some photos at the Vital slideshow, I wish Peaty and Greg was there, Rat had fun, maybe this could have been a much better EWS experience for the Syndicate boys.
  • + 8
He raced the Cape to Cape stage race in Western Australia against some serious XC talent and did blood well. Fast and fit.
  • + 9
Sam and Greg were standout riders for me, coming down in the poor conditions the other top guys did and muscling their way into the top 10. Love the masters guys but it is a bit crap to see the local boys take it in a combination of local practice time and weather lottery, I doubt we will see them anywhere near the top 10 for the reast of the season if they compete. I can still imagine Rude will come back and smash the field next race though....
  • + 3
@Racer951: first of all....weather is not a lottery. Everyone rides the same conditions pretty much. Results just prove the top riders didn't have their game heads on. An early interview with rude clearly indicates this....he was clearly angry.

Tech riding - the winners had it. Speed wise the final drier stages prove that the usual suspects have the edge.

Regards the Masters and the rest of the season. Watch out for Wyn.....hes racing all enduros and is fast and fit as f$%k. He'll be up there most races.

I agree...local knowledge does play its part. But not as much as we think. Once again.....the final stage results prove this.

Overall the top guys got beaten by guys who could ride the mud and challenging conditions more consistently.
  • + 9
@Racer951: FYI, Wyn was 3rd the last time the EWS was in Rotorua (Clementz was 1st followed by Barel) and the conditions were different. He definitely has what it takes to Wyn on any given weekend.
  • + 11
The top 20 riders got hit with a massive downpour prior to their Stage 1 start times while many of the unseeded pros had already finished Stage 2. Once conditions got back to normal on the later stages all of the guys on the podium were outside of the top 10. Almost every commentator and racer talked about how the tracks deteriorated for the top 20 guys. What it did show is that Hill has both the fitness and bike handling. It also showed Callaghan's bike handling skills in slop. Dailly was the surprise of the race winning two stages in his first Pro race. For less sloppy races it is going to be Hill, Rude and Graves fighting it out.
  • + 2
@dirtydawgnz: agreed, Wyn has what it takes to be a serious contender for the overall ...and this win with everybody besides Sam and Greg well off in points sets him up great into the next rounds. Sure will make for a great series
  • + 2
@dirtydawgnz: other than that, kiwi's are the best people on the planet. I even married one!

It would be interested to see how good rude actually is. He is definetly good but he has never had to race the likes of Minaar, Gwin, Hill at there peak if they were actually racing enduro seriously. Yes he is world champion but at the same time he is racing against downhiller who race enduro occasionally, who are past there best and retiring or who arn't consistently top ten riders. You can only beat who is in front of you but it is a bit of a best of the rest situation
  • + 2
@dirtydawgnz: Pretty sure they even say that those who went early had an advantage in the video. Riders may not aways say that as they will be looked at as giving an excuse but seems there is truth to the idea that earlier riders has a definite advantage.
  • + 1
@dirtydawgnz: I heard Wyn was using a power meter on his xt crank, so he must be training hard this off season, which ruins my MTB Jesus theory,
  • + 12
 Sam Hill number 1!!!!!
  • + 10
What a banging review. Big ups to EWS and Pinkbike. This shit is next level, bring on Tasmania!
  • + 7
The camerawork and footage in this edit was a bit heavy on the "focus on the face, get the emotion" shots and too little wide shots where you can actually see the riding going on.
On a mud race like this focus should be on wheels slipping and and sliding, that is where the action is. How many cuts where the wheels are not even in the frame? A close up on a fighting face is fine in between but more wide action shots PLEASE!
  • + 3
It was awful start to finish, sloooow mo f*uck off, and the same to trance or whatever that sh't is
  • + 10
UCI World Cup DH has a lot to live up to now.
  • + 1
Why were you neg propped? You were complementing the video...
  • + 2
 @morcombemedia: It's PB, don't ask why...just ignore
  • + 1
This is a pathetic effort, what happened to the coverage?
  • + 10
This coverage was great!!!! Got me stoked for EWS!
  • + 5
Love the footage but could you PLEASE raise the levels for the commentary and interviews...music totally drowns it out. And how bout a bit more enthusiasm? Ric sounded bored halfway through.
  • + 7
and that's why you dont buy carbon bars!
  • + 4
I was explaining this to someone last night. Not worth the risk!
  • + 2
My buddy did the same thing with an aluminum bar a few years back. Spent all day riding then on the road back home; pulled on the bar to wheelie, and fell off the back onto the ground. The right half of the bar pulled out of the stem.
  • + 3
Im not sure its a problem for a lot of 'regular' guys but if you are racing multiple stages as fast as you can push it in crap conditions I would be thinking about anything that could be unreliable, carbon bars being one of them.
  • + 3
@Racer951: I understand the concept but then there are plenty of riders that use carbon in various locations without problem. Richie's a pretty big guy and rides real hard, for example. He rides carbon bars and hasn't had an issue. I get that he uses what his sponsors produce, but he gets a choice. Brosnan rides Renthal and chooses aluminum bars. To each their own, I guess.
  • + 6
@glenward: I suppose it also depends on who makes your handlebar. Not everything is equal and all that.

In enduro though it seems to be pretty hard on gear, in a DH race the top guys will get everything checked after a crash, in enduro, you could have a few knocks in a bad run and still have 6 stages left to go for some small damage to turn into a failure.

Lets put it this way, if they were so fragile the companies supplying them would have either stopped selling them or gone out of business, so in the 'real' (read non EWS) world they are usually absolutely fine.
  • + 5
@glenward: sounds like your buddy needs a torque wrench
  • + 1
@FarmerJohn: it was the damnedest thing really. Snapped almost in the exact middle off the bar/stem. Wasn't like he crushed the bar or anything. Just a fluke thing, could've been a number of causes
  • + 3
I have bent 2 sets of aluminum bars ,but never broke them
  • + 3
But he fixed them with natural carbon fibre!!!
  • + 1
That's why you don't over tighten grips, brakes and shifters.
  • + 1
@djm35: I expect the carbon bar that broke was not new. That's the beauty of being sponsored. They give you new stuff when you ask. At least once a year.
  • + 2
@FarmerJohn: A torque wrench is barely even necessary with a carbon bar let alone aluminum..........

it's called not over tightening like an idiot
  • + 3
@multialxndr: Discounting Rude's performance because he may or may not be faster than the hypothetical performance of riders either not racing enduro, not in their prime, or both is unfair to him and the rest of the current EWS field. Most of the top 10 currently in the sport are fully dedicated and aren't just downhillers doing a training ride.

Rude has been unquestionably dominant in a strong field of riders. Saying he's only kind of good because he isn't racing against somebody like Hill in their prime, or Minaar or Gwin is totally missing the point.
  • + 6
10:50 Greg described an entire industry
  • + 5
Yet you still enjoy powerful, reliable, virtually fade free disc brakes, huge choice of genuinely excellent tyres, dropper posts, nice geometry, lighter frames, plush and stable forks and shocks... your problem with the industry is in the mirror in your bathroom mate. Must be a great life to focus on few resized examples of bad shit and lose the whole image which in fact is fkng fantastic. Cheer the fk up
  • + 19
 @WAKIdesigns: The joke

-----------------------------------

your head
  • + 1
 @WAKIdesigns: Whoosh..............
  • + 13
Oh for fks sake, he said: "It feels horrible but everyone is like Wooow! And then I felt it cannot be good" i have not yet seen a single fkng day on comment board on Pinkbike when everyone was Wooow! Maybe when Fest series comes along or when Sam Hill or Danny Hart wins a World Cup. Or when a rim or fork comes in 26" version, or when Peaty says something stupid and then grabs a pint, or when Warner pees on somebody. Other than that, everyone is like: BOOOOOOO!!! Ol'da feckin' taym! And it just cannot stop "they just want to get our money! They make our stuff obsolete!" - it's like a bunch of fecking hill billies being told by some political candidate a hole that European Union steals their money! Or rednecks shouting that Mexicans steal their jobs.

- Booo!
- Why are we booing?
- The sun comes up! Who'll pay for this?!
  • + 3
 @WAKIdesigns: ......woah...
  • + 2
@Veasey5: this must be pre-ride Waki... he'll be in a much better mood after he rides his bike today
  • + 1
@thinkbike: I have swollen and hurting knees... I am angry... worked my arse off on the gym only to get that...
  • + 4
@WAKIdesigns: I honestly can't tell if you are being sarcastic, ironic or post-modern. I hope you feel better soon :?
  • + 0
@WAKIdesigns: apparently they want us to pay €60 billion euros to make roads in other countries. No way I say. If you want roads, pay for them yourselves!
  • + 1
@jaame - bad example to a bad person. I am against poliferation of cars and for cycling/public transport. I am strongly against luxurious road infrastracture that Europe is building and how eager everyone is to pour asphalt and concrete everywhere.
  • + 1
@WAKIdesigns: how's your hairy bollocks now?
  • + 1
@Earthmotherfu: how dare you? I shave them regularly.
  • + 3
@WAKIdesigns: Not sure what your'e going on about but how are so few slagging off what is a completey horrible highlights video, I can only think blind or stupid, if more people don't denounce this rubbish then it will carry on.
  • + 1
@jimmythehat: I am quite certain that I qualify as blind and fecking stupid douchebag, so please show me what are you calling rubbish here? What should stop? Let me see, for once.
  • + 3
@WAKIdesigns: A sorry excuse for a highlights video thats what, supposedly new coverage,in fact half the length and 10 times worse quality.
  • + 2
Enjoyed that, cheers.I had no idea an EWS was on so that was a pleasant surprise! Big props to Zakarias Johansen getting 22nd on his debut, one behind Richie Rude Good to see Wynn take the win, nice to mix it up. Really impressive from Ravanel, just hope the womens series will be competitive
  • + 4
love how Rat finished 8th absolutely smoking so many 'full time' enduroists with their fancy diets and personal training programs!!!
  • + 6
What's Richie Rude got on his head? Reminds of Kickstart in the 80s
  • + 4
Haha thought Eddie Kidd was coming through the bush!
  • + 3
Loved the video, it was great but so disappointed it was so short!! 30 mins next time please!!
  • + 1
Hell I didn't even make it to the end, hurry up Lourdes.
  • + 1
Amazing coverage guys, just one thing, top 10 guys all have his moment image/coment... José Borges made 9 a huge result for the Portuguese rider and nothing ? Just that, keep going with this amazing coverages Wink
  • + 1
Best riders on one of the best tracks in the best place on earth for mtb, Wyn, sam, niko and eddie really dominated and destroyed the track in crazy muddy conditions that made for a kickass edit and footy
  • + 3
The Rude/Graves/Hill battle for the EWS overall this year is going to be INSANE!
  • + 2
add Adrian Dailly to the list, he's going to rock and carry on the french tradition on top of EWS
  • + 4
what happend to ratboy on the last stage? Tired, flat or already partying?
  • + 4
He said in another video that he was gassed out, literally just hanging onto his 5010 to get to the finish. Followed by him saying its the longest day he has ever spent on a bike.... I believe the edit is on Vital.
  • + 4
 @NateMob: I dont think he rode a 5010, wasnt it a hightower?
  • + 1
@Racer951: Yep, you're right! Sorry about that.
  • + 1
 @NateMob: he is on HIghTower
  • + 2
@PauRexs: I think it catches people off guard that the guy 'having fun' and out for a good time is riding a 29er now.......
  • + 2
That last stage started on Corridor which is basically a flow trail with jumps, but quickly hits the trees after a short uphill pinch of about 50m. Once in the trees the first section is rutted and steep with some step downs halfway before opening up into more spacious trail with lots of roots, small drops etc (grade 4 stuff), then you pop out of that and there is a generally flat section that takes you to the top of the jumps park. The flat section starts with about a 100m uphill - not steep but enough for your legs to say they hate you. Once off that trail it is down a short section of tarseal road then jump off that and into the jump park, which for someone like Bryce he could pump the whole way to the end.

On a normal day, the combination of those trails is pretty easy, but after 8hrs...damn knackered...
  • + 2
Anyone know where / when they are showing the full TV highlights? This was a poor 15 minutes when I think of last seasons footage in my opinion.
  • + 5
 Masters bros rock on!
  • + 1
What a mix up in the standings, didn't even know the Masters of the Bikerverse were racing this year, looks to be a very very interesting season ahead, can't wait for the next episode.
  • + 1
i think i can write this even before i watched the video:
THANKS for the awesome coverage of the EWS, enjoyed every bit of it the last season!!!
  • + 3
Bring on Tassie in 1.5 weeks!! So stoked, can't wait!
  • + 1
Yeah alright mate no need to go on about it!
  • + 3
Richard was pure class please bring him back
  • + 1
Why is the point system different for the men and the women? Their both doing the same event yet the points aren't the same - 500 for 1st male compared to 400 for 1st female.
  • + 2
Cecile is unstoppable these days. You wonder how she'd do against T-Mo or ACC if they were in the mix.
  • + 4
I'd like to see Miss Atherton make the switch and see how she would do (and give the other women in DH a chance)
  • - 1
question for Kiwis. so this Haka thing seems like a pretty big deal, like a defining thing to be prominently shown, like any time anything to do with NZ comes up. so.... is this a daily ritual? do you guys do this at the morning meeting before sitting down in front of your monitors at work? when you go out to the pub? before a bike ride? or is it more reserved for weddings and larger social gatherings? xmas parties, and the like. do you do this instead of singing carols?
  • + 5
Haka? What Haka? Wyn had a bee in his pants...couldn't you tell?

The Maori group at the start were part of the powhiri (poe-fi-ree) which is a Maori welcome. Starts with a type of haka, but it is more a welcome than a challenge, which is what a haka is (see All Blacks and any pub in England when the Poms encourage some drunk Kiwi's to do one).

Sports wise the haka is now becoming prevalent when Kiwi's do well. Bit of backlash to that in NZ as the whole cultural appropriation PC brigade is starting to make a huff over it, and the "oh it's so embarrassing, Cheryl. Not another one!"
  • + 1
Awesome stuff! Congrats to all who pushed through those tough conditions in one mega days effort! Wink
  • + 1
I love how the coverage of these events is evolving to be more comprehensive and well rounded.
  • + 1
Good to see the overall results in-between stages this year so we can see how the race is unfolding.
  • + 1
Hah! The opening music reminds me of the good old "Wide World of Sports" intro music!

Good vid though!
  • + 2
Win for Wyn, Sweet As Bro!
  • + 1
Great coverage. I hope the future ones will be couple of minutes longer.
  • + 2
 Wyning!
  • + 1
just looked like typical Scottish trails with all that mud
  • + 1
In the Scottish summer too! Big Grin
  • + 1
great vid , need EWS event in RSA !!
  • + 1
I think I look forward to these videos more than any others.
  • + 1
  • + 1
 jealous ,
  • + 0
 proper coverage!! thanks!!
  • + 1
 well said
  • - 1
mint vid, but who chose the music?!
  • + 8
You know what they say about arseholes and opinions?
  • + 22
@PhillipJ: expression of opinion attracts arseholes?
  • + 4
 @m9lee: Haaaa!
  • + 2
Why stop at the music, how about massive over use of slow mo and barely any riding and boring Irish bloke
  • - 3
EWS coverage got to galactic level, makes it so much better than before and as interesting as DH
