Ask Us Anything

Josh 'Ratboy' Bryceland, @ratskid23, Josh 'Loosedog' Lewis, @LadLife, and Kirt Voreis, @Voreis, are three of the most entertaining and stylish riders out there, with oversized personalities to match. In Ride Your F#%king Bike, Fox's latest full length movie, the two embark on a three week West Coast roadtrip with a rotating cast of other talented riders, and the results are just as wild and crazy as you'd expect. We managed to convince the three of them to put their bikes aside for a little while in order to answer all of your questions here on Pinkbike.

How ‘Ask Me Anything' Works:

Starting at 10:00 AM PDT/6:00 PM BST on Thursday, April 27 you can type your questions into the comment box following this article and the guys will have a crack at answering them. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a while, as Kirt, Josh, and Josh will be busy responding to the flood of questions. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously. To make the process as efficient as possible, try to follow these simple guidelines:

Keep your questions relevant.

Stay focused. Try to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later.

• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words.

Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have a negative issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner.

Use propping to acknowledge good—or not so good—questions. Bump them up or down to where they belong.

Mark your calendars—the conversation starts at 10:00 AM Pacific Time / 6:00 PM British Time on Thursday, April 27.

Other time zones:
• 1:00 PM EST (New York)
• 6:00 PM BST (London)
• 7:00 PM CET (Paris)

  • 19 3
Yeah, because only Americans have issues understanding him. Hell, even Warner has issue with him at times.

How lucrative are the 50to01 and the video businesses?
Enough to maintain a laidback lifestyle or enough to save some dough for mtb retirement?
  • 40 0
to be truthful, everything 50to01 earns goes back into making bigger ideas more realistic and that's the focus. It's never been about pulling money for ourselves and never will be, what 50to01 has become is amazing and its thanks to the support we get from all the rad fans. as for the videos, youve gotta be going big to earn any money out of youtube, i just enjoy giving regular content and showing off the talented riders i'm lucky to call my friends!

the brecon beacons video we did with Rankin a couple of months ago, The icy rocky steep line we rode was not planned, and we started walking down it, but after the first bit me and rat couldnt go without trying, we worked our way down it in sections very slowly with our tails firmly between our legs haha. a massive buzz when we reached the bottom

@ratskid23: FYI: Kirk is also a character on "The Mighty Boosh." The wiki lists this...

"Kirk is a child Shaman, and a member of the Board of Shaman. He has admitted to being "an neurotic adventurer of the most deranged kind" from the fourth dimension, and a "vehicular menace, mowing down all in [his] path". Kirk is renowned by the other members of the Board of Shaman for having the greatest capacity for taking drugs."

Just figured it would give y'all some reference. Appropriate name. Smile

We miss Ratboy on WC but his decision it's the most inspirational message ever -> Enjoy your fkng life!

Now, question for Ratboy and Loosedog: Are your bikes still alive after all those jib tricks and rear wheel slapping?
  • 19 0
good question!!! honestly the 5010's stand up to so much abuse, its only ever scuffs and a few loose spokes here and there. i think the more the back wheel gets slapped the more it loves it
  • 5 0
Ratboy, given your new low(er)-carbon-footprint philosophy about biking (which is great), will we see you involved in any new sustainability projects/products in the industry? I'm really inspired by Jeremy Jones' Protect Our Winters project for winter sports, would love to see someone like you get something similar going for mtb! Maybe some tires made with hemp-oil, ehh?
  • 4 0
@ratskid23, @LadLife, and @Voreis. For all the lads. What is your take on rider safety and education in mountain biking... especially in enduro and downhill? There has been a lot of talk recently about riders and concussion. Even energy drinks, injury and rehabilitation. What (if anything) could be done to better rider and public knowledge about rider safety and what would you like to see at the races? All the best for the rest of the season!! @collyoh @mtbmedicine
  • 6 0
Rider safety is a tough subject. We all know if your going to play you're going to pay!. I've been knocked unconscious a half dozen times and have had over 20 concessions but I would never stop riding my bike because of it. I do feel its up to the industry to make products that keep up safe but in the end the rider has to make the choice. I wouldn't suggest the route of being a pro to any kid out there because it is filled with injury. Bottom line, if it makes your life better go for it and always wear your helmet.
  • 2 0
 cheers!
  • 13 0
The EWS are really good, they do a riders briefing before each event, explaining what to do in the event of finding an injured rider, they also have a concussion assessment process in place and wont lent you ride if you don't pass. i think this is great and helps raise an awareness of how important this stuff is. The energy drink thing is just a joke and its great to see people talking up with realistic opinions about that online which again raises awareness, the drink water boys have got something great going now and we are buzzing to be helping them reach out into the mtb world.
  • 6 0
What do you guys think about WC DH ruling standarizing clothes but not wheel sizes i.e., and the way tracks are changing?
  • 5 0
its very fresh and a tough one to comment on, it'll be interesting to see how this weekend pans out! obviously if tracks got tighter/rougher it would leave people sticking to 650b wheels, cant really blame teams for wanting to go as quick as they can when the tracks are probably favouring 29ers right now.
  • 1 0
@LadLife: and a hypothetical wheel size standard for racing?
so all racers have equal conditions in that essential part, plus industry and consumers don't have one more headache yo care of
  • 1 0
 Clothes rules have been relaxed
  • 4 1
Any tips for videos? Weve been trying to make more and more, but with limited spots, and only a few guys down to film, how can we keep it interesting? Were struggling to find dig spots around here, and most of our usual trail centers weve already filmed at. How do you guys make videos so captivating with only a handful of spots and guys (in each video)? Cheers boys!
  • 11 0
get creative on the bike, do weird things and don't be afraid to laugh at yourself if it doesn't work Smile
  • 9 0
yeah i agree with rat, just call weird challenges and learn what your bike does along the way. whenver i think of something i want to do i write it down on my phone and start figuring out where to make it happen. listen to that voice and just do whats feeling good. get behind eachother and keep the hype up, the energy always takes you to new heights.
  • 3 1
Cheers guys thanks a lot for answering!
  • 5 2
Brendan Fairclough mentioned recently about there being a high barrier to entry in downhill (the fact you need a couple grands worth of bike to get started). The bike industry tends to focus a lot on the high end. Would you guys like to see more effort being put into making good cheap downhill bikes to get more kids into the sport?
  • 6 1

Please track this guy down and get him on a v10. true canadian.
  • 1 0
sorry i hit the downvote, i was laughing from the video so hard i couldn't click straight
  • 1 0
The only thing I can't understand after watching that video is why Red Bull isn't painted all over his helmet. As far as I can see Denim® is his only sponsor at the moment, tons of opportunity for other sponsors.
  • 5 3
hey josh i remember that around the time of you announcing your deparure from world cup racing, that you had cited one of the main reasons being the unfortunate environmental impact from the excesive amount of travel around the world. I though it was a pretty funny reason and definitly a good one liner at the bars to throw at the ladies talking about " you know i just couldnt deal with the massive carbon footprint and the poor baby seals, breaking my damn heart, so i just had to walk away". Anyways im stoked to see your having fun.
  • 34 0
there was many factors for me stepping away from world cup series. if I'm going to travel, i wanna travel places i haven't been before. see fresh faces and places. also the consumption of parts required to compete at that level was a tough one for me to justify. i love riding back tyre until theres no knobs left on it but you can't do that and try to win races at the same time
  • 3 0
 @ratskid23:
Start the ratboy skids for kids initiative - throw all those once-used race tires at local groms.
  • 5 1
Kirt, I saw you and Bas filming in Kelowna. You told me it was part of this movie but it wasn't in. Did it get cut or is it another project?

check out veronique sandler, katy curd and joey gough theyre sendin it!!
  • 3 0
Does Josh think that if the DH WC was to mix up the tracks more we would see him race again? Be a shame for him to not complete competitively again, he's always so entertaining to watch.
  • 21 0
ill be racing some more enduros in the future thats for sure. they are super fun. fresh natural tracks and laid back... way more my style
  • 6 0
@ratskid23: that's class, just a shame it's not streamed or as easy to view, stay breezy
  • 3 1
I just want to say that 50:01 and a handful of other guys have changed the game in MTB videos. You guys have definitely taken the pomp out of the whole thing and have just been able to showcase what having fun on your bike looks like. Your videos are super inspirational so, thank you!

 @ratskid23 @LadLife and Max

Great meeting you guys at Jamaica Fat Tyre festival. I didn't recognize the 3 of you when you skateboarded past me im the hallway at hotel and i shouted "hooligans!" jokingly! All 3 of you just kept going on and laughing.

What was the most memorable moment on Jamaica Phat tyre tour? I'd say the evening of Whitfield Hall was pretty epic and hilarious!

  • 7 1
the santa cruz 5010 is the king for me, do it all.
  • 4 0
yeah same, the 5010 is perfect for what i want to do with a bike. it takes big jumps but is playful enough to get jibby. very predictable when its going to break loose which is what makes it so fun
  • 1 0
@LadLife: loose would you say you prefer it over the bronson? i really liked the bronson2 but the solo2 is so much more fun to ride but nearly as capable on the downs

  • 12 0
many thanks man! yeah man im going to get in the woods and build a trail ive had in my head for a while, lots of jibs and log slides. as for product we've got a few things ready to drop so ill be giving that my full attention... also the big one is that we have a proper website about to launch where you will find everything in one place: photo stories, shop, videos etc.... exciting times Smile
  • 3 0
 To Ratboy & Loosedog
What is your main inspiration for the future of mountain biking. Where would you like to see the sport go?
  • 19 0
niko vink is the man, steeze and style, big jumps and commitment, he's the man
  • 15 0
for where the sport to go: for the EWS, i would like the whole pre practice thing get resolved - while the race format is amazing and i love it, it honestly has all my support... i really think its a joke that people openly go and pre practice the courses before events, ive seen a well known racers strava uploaded blatantly riding parts of the same course as the proposed race after the map had been released in aspen last year - this is just an example of many cases. i think people will start speaking up more about this though especially as the format is now getting taken more seriously by the whole sprectrum of riders.
for world cup dh, i'd love to see the tracks and coverage go back to where it was 10-15 years ago - people winning races by over 10 seconds... when do you ever get that these days? it was so exciting having a full series of brutal tracks which made for all kinds of results.
as for none racing id love to see riders like craig evans be able to earn a living out of bikes, in my opinion he shows bikes off way more than a 12th or whatever at a leogang world cup.
  • 1 0
@ratskid23: ill check out some of his stuff! gracias
  • 3 0
This is a question for all you guys. At what age did you start racing, and two how hard was it to get your first sponsorship deal? Thanks for your Time Guys!
  • 7 0
i did my first race at 13 which was so much fun, being in a new forest, seeing all the different bikes and a whole new environment - deffo a feeling i will always remember. Peaty dropped me some kit off for it which was so big haha good times. I was lucky to get into riding with steve as a neighbour... it all stemmed from there really.
  • 10 0
I started racing at 19. I raced a year of sport XC and DH. I made a video of me jumping my MTB and flipping my bmx bike and sent it to John Parker at Yeti back in 1993. He liked it so much he turned me pro in 94. It was very hard to learn to race MTB because I never raced BMX as a kid. I kept motivated and started to learn how to train and go fast without crashing. I feel so lucky to be here today!
  • 3 0
Miss ya on the wc, Rat, but the content has been pure gold. The spirit of them kind of reminds me of the kranked/crusty vids of my childhood. No question, just stoke ; )
  • 1 0
Looked like such a rad trip coming up through California into Canada. My bro and I will be trekking up from Portland, OR to Whistler this summer. Any spots/trails that you especially recommend checking out between here and there besides the main stops (Bellingham, Squamish, etc.)? Maybe something off the beaten path?
  • 5 0
was so good!!! sounds like youre gonna have a killer trip. my favourite spot was bend, theres some awesom riding around bellingham pemby squamish so youre not going to struggle, deffo recommend some vancouver island riding if the trip allows for it
  • 1 0
 This is for Josh:

Firstly, thank you for being such and inspirational personality throughout the world of mountain biking. I can't help but smile when I watch any clip with your riding in it and that smile is quickly followed by a need to ride.

How has leaving the world cup team effected your relationship Cappuccino Steve? I always had it in my head that your friend/mentor relationship was greater than just racing; do you see him much now that you're both off of the circuit?

What was the biggest mental challenge that you've had to overcome in terms of riding bikes?
  • 2 0
No question, just wanted to say I loved the flick. It reminded me of the Props Road Fools vids. Took me back to a time when bmx was aboot fun an not just filming clips for insta edits
  • 3 0
 thankyou very much!!!
  • 1 0
Such a sick film guys, its a good one to watch the night before a big day on the vessel! Had the pleasure of meeting rat and loose and revo earlier this year, hope i can still shred as hard as kirt at that age! Get well soon loose
  • 5 1
Is all the traveling really any less that doing the world cup circuit
  • 28 1
definitely using bikes in a more concours manner, way less consumption of parts in the pursuit of speed. I've used two tyres so far this year versus how many i would chow through getting ready for a world cup circuit. its all relevant man and what feels right
  • 2 1
Loosedog, how did you come to be associated with the Drink Water crew? I would love to see a 50to01 edit of a summer shred on Mt Hood and some shots of you animals taking a run at the Drink Water Rat Race this summer.
  • 2 0
it was actually rat who first got involved with drinkwater, naturally we all just got on though and started exchanging ideas... 50to01 and drinkwater are on the same page and now we have allsorts of plans for a drink water/50to01 collab. Austin is loving the MTB so look out for some cross over banter coming soon enough haha!!!

Ratboy, got any tips for how you get so loose?
  • 22 0
 on or off the bike?
  • 2 0
With the 1st WC DH coming up, are you a little torn about being there? Or just stoked with your decision?
  • 2 1
Who got up to the most shenanigans on that trip for the movie? My money is on Loose Dog.
Also, was so glad to see you guys rip at Cold Creek!
  • 3 0

How much more fun is it to go mess around and shred than adhering to the pressure and training of the WC DH circuit?
  • 15 0
 incomparable
  • 1 0
@ratskid23: Thanks for the reply brother!
  • 1 0
Would you say it's a good idea to go on a bike trip in England, coming from France? There are lots of Brits here during the summer, but your local spots seem like fun!
  • 3 0
hell yeah britain has amazing riding, you need a good tour guide though because there is micro spots littered everywhere
  • 2 0
for sure, ranging from wales to scotland with some lake district stuff in between... you could have a hell of a road trip
  • 1 0
You could do a banging trip if you got the tunnel across from Calais to Dover, rode the surrey hills, then Wales (BMCC, Revolution, BPW) and then north to Scotland and ride Fort William!
  • 2 1
Loose, would seem the rat quitting the world cup is the best thing that's ever happened to you? How are you going to stop him taking it up again?
  • 5 0
to be travelling the world doing what i love as a job with me big bro is deffo a lucky situation . it wouldnt be any different if he was still racing though, we'd just have to go back to organising trips around those races i guess!

I cant nail a favourite because downhill breeds some ludacris characters, infact most racers have something unique and likeable about them but i think bruni's personality and approach is golden as a champion, ultimately humble.

Thanks, I grew up around a bunch of maniacs that lived life to the fullest, sometimes in the wrong ways. These people taught me how to live and showed me the mistakes not to make. I also loved to look thru magazines and imagine what it would be like to be a pro. Jeff Stanton, Ricky Johnson, Mat Hoffman, Steve Caballero, Duane Peters, Eddie Fiola, Scott Crossfieldn (test Pilot) Chuck Yeager (test pilot) and my Uncle Jay. To many to list
