Now Finished: Ask Me Anything with Greg Minnaar

by Pinkbike Staff

Update from Greg Minnaar: Thanks for all the questions guys, sorry I wasn't able to get to all of them. I'm off now, but I'll try to stop by again to follow up on a few more. Stay Loose

With a career closing in on two decades at the top, Greg Minnaar's name is synonymous with World Cup Downhill racing. With the three World Championships, three World Cup Series Overall championships, and 75 World Cup DH podiums over the course of his career, the 37 year old from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, is one of the winningest racers of all time. A member of the revered Santa Cruz Syndicate team, Greg's experience and attention to detail have been a valuable resource for product engineers in the development and testing process of new products, whether it's a new bike or, a signature tire.

With the start of the World Cup DH season about to kick off in Maribor shortly, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity for you to ask him your questions.

Greg Minnaar had a strong race today to finish just over 2 seconds out of the medals.
8th place at the Lenzerheide World Championships 2018.
Greg Minnaar simply classer than class... 10th place after missing 5 rounds.
Greg Minnaar finishing in 10th place in Mont-Sainte-Anne despite missing 5 rounds.

Greg Minnaar returns to WC racing although is still showing the signs from that crash in Fort William.
A crash in Fort William meant the Goat's 2018 season was cut short.
A bitter pill to swalllow Minnaar was riding with determination and passion all weekend.
A bitter pill to swallow at Val di Sole in 2017.

How ‘Ask Us Anything' Works:

Starting at 10:00 AM PDT/6:00 PM BST on March 19, 2019 you can type your questions for Greg Minnaar into the comment box below this article and he'll have a crack at answering them. Sometimes your answer will pop up in a few seconds; others may take a few minutes while Chris works his way through questions that are popping up. Everyone who posts a question, large or small, will be taken seriously.

To make this go as smoothly as possible, try to follow these guidelines:

• Keep your questions relevant
• Stay focused and to keep your questions on one topic if possible. You can always ask about another item later
• Try to keep your questions to about 100 words
• Ask Us Anything is a service to PB readers who are seeking helpful information, not a forum to broadcast opinions or grievances. If you do have an issue that you want to ask about, no worries, just keep your complaints relevant and in the context of a question so that it can be addressed in a productive manner
• Use propping to acknowledge good (or not so good) questions and bump them up or down to where they belong

Other time zones:
• 1:00 PM EST (New York)
• 5:00 PM GMT (London)
• 6:00 PM CET (Paris)
• 7:00 PM SAST (Cape Town)
• 3:00 AM AEST (Sydney, Australia)

Only missing the Leogang podium once in the race s history Minnaar still leads the series by a whisker.

Thanks for all the questions guys, sorry I wasn't able to get to all of them. I'm off now, but I'll try to stop by again to follow up on a few more. Stay Loose

@gregminnaar. Bigger grin at the end of a run just out with your mates non competition or at the end of a race run?
  • + 49
Greg, until around 2 years ago, you only ever wore shorts when riding and racing downhill, and won a lot of races wearing them!

What made you start to wear trousers all of a sudden?

You never seem to wear shorts anymore and your results have never quite been the same since.. maybe I'm just being superstitious!

I think in many countries it is national regulation to race in long pants in DH. Or do you know about anyone riding shorts in DH WC?
  • + 5
@bok-CZ: There are lots of riders who race in shorts at World Cup level.
  • + 3
@kinglynch19900: watching replay from last years sunny and hot Andorra and I can´t spot one, but whatever.
  • + 2
I bet it's aero. Getting hot etc is an issue but if you can shave a bit off your drag coefficient you'll take it! Shorts must be a turbulent airflow nightmare.
  • + 1
@themop: Well this is what I thought, but for a rider who NEVER wore trousers when riding his downhill bike, the sudden swap got me wondering!
  • + 87
I blame Marshy, he reckons pants are more aerodynamic and he hated the way my shorts flapped in the wind. I don't always listen to him..... like the time he wanted to duct tape my shoe laces, but this time I thought he was being reasonable
  • + 4
It's also partly because O'neal wouldn't make a short and long sleeve Jersey combo for ages. Myself and a couple of other O'neal sales agents badgered them for years until they finally did.
Then it took an equal amount of time and badgering for them to make a dedicated mtb trouser (pant to the Americans) that would fit tall people.
  • + 1
@IllestT: Next up, short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve jerseys that have cool designs?? That would be great!
  • + 49
Congratulations! your application to become the President of the UCI was a success. What changes do you make first?

P.s Good luck this season Greg, i'm hope you never leave the sport, you're an awesome ambassador
  • + 17
whahaha, sheesh I wouldn't know where to start. Give me some pointers... Thanks a lot
  • + 5
@gregminnaar: Fire everyone and tell the IOC to go to hell?
  • + 3
 @gregminnaar:
Cmon Greg, you can do this!
I´d be really interested to hear about this as well, without any external input.
You´ve been there long enough to see a lot of change, for better or worse. So what has been something you wanted to change in all that time and what was the biggest success/improvement?
  • + 1
@Loki87: Tell the IOC to Go commit Die because they are the literal worst.
  • + 27
What was the best thing about the Honda years?

It just had such an aura about it. A car/motorcycle manufacturer making a first time downhill bike. Non bike company suspension. The mystery of the box! I'd love to know what it was like being at the top of the program.

Thanks Greg. Have a fun 2019!
  • + 20
The experience, it was completely different to how the bike industry operates. But the experience testing with Honda engineers was incredible
  • + 4
@gregminnaar: Do you think the bike industry should look to learn from the auto/moto industry and what aspect would it benefit the most?
  • + 26
 Hi Greg,

What are you interested in besides mountain biking? Is there something that worries or fascinates you? Who is Greg Minaar without a bike?

Best Regards!
  • + 29
My first love was motocross, I still ride once a week. My passion is surfing, but I don't get to do it as much as I would like. Golf is a game I play only because of my friends back home. Besides activities and sports I spend as much time with friends and family as possibly, I love Braaing (BBQ)... at least twice a week.... STEAK!!!. And what takes up equal time to my training is the businesses that I'm involved in and product development
  • + 10
@gregminnaar: Go-to cut for your steak?
  • + 28
Not a Question, sorry. Greg, you are awesome!
  • + 3
Yeah, I'm here for the same no question!!!! Keep up the good work Greg! You are a great raw model for our sport!
  • + 8
 Thanks a lot
  • + 24
You have a certain air about you Greg, which is why I’ve always considered you the Bond of DH. After handing over a bit of new kit does Marshy ever say, “Oh, and do be careful 007”?
  • + 2
If he doesn´t, he definitely should do that from now on!
  • + 25
No, he says the bloody opposite
  • + 20
Do you think height affects riding performance? It´s been an ongoing debate between me and my dad for years if smaller or taller riders have some sort of advantage, or if it evens out in the end.
What do you think about that?
Do you think the wheel size changes have had an influence on that?
  • + 21
I've always felt a shorter rider sits more centred in the bike, where as a taller rider is forever compensating. But then a taller rider has a little more travel in his legs and leverage in his arms, so it probably equals out Wheel size probably made things a little more equal
  • + 19
Greg, I really admire you and your career. What is your opinion on the direction of the WC? the level of difficulty of tracks, events in bike parks, and the comments of increasingly easier tracks. hugs from Brazil,
  • + 47
Thanks. Well, there's always a lot of talk about how easy certain tracks are, but I've never seen the rider who's complaining about how easy the track is ever succeed on the certain track. You would think if a track was so easy for the rider he would smash the field right? Bike Parks are the sustainable component to Gravity, so the World Cup needs to visit these venues. However I do feel the need to counter the balance with tracks that have more raw and technical terrain.
  • + 4
@gregminnaar: I know which rider you're talking about. LOL
  • + 2
Perfect Minn! Another question, which one do you find the ideal number of Races, since F1 for example are 21 steps, the downhill does not seem dry? do not you think that would be ideal new clues for the development of the modality in new and different places?
  • + 22
How many carbon Enve wheels have you broken?
  • + 76
 Enough
  • + 20
Hi Greg, can you help Jordi out and explain to Lois how suspension works? ;p
  • + 16
 True puzzlers wahahaha
  • + 15
It seems like you've spent a big chunk of your career coming back from injury or racing with a nagging injury. How do you stay positive and hopeful when you don't feel like you're at 100%?
  • + 17
Have you ever considered changing your last name to MAXnaar?
  • + 37
 Often
  • + 15
If you could choose which bike to ride, other than the V10, which would it be?
  • + 45
 Megatower
  • + 2
 @gregminnaar: what a stunner.
  • + 11
Greg, as you're of a good age now do you feel that the older you have got, certain things have effected your bike riding and racing ? Longer to recover ? Over thinking certain challenges on a course ? Feel the young guns are quicker ? Less strength ? and any tips for the older generation still loving to go fast and race !?!?!
  • + 39
Physically I haven't really noticed much, the heavy nights do effect me a little more and I'm not as flexible as I used to be.... but Im working on it!. Now that i'm on the right size bike I feel just as confident as ever, I really don't feel much different to when I was 18
  • + 6
@gregminnaar: hope we see you riding for years.
  • + 1
 @gregminnaar: thankyou !
Good luck this year, see you at Fort Bill !
  • + 10
Greg - good hanging out with you at Trans Cascadia. On that point and with (ex) DH guys like Sam Hill killing it in enduro racing, do you envision yourself transitioning to enduro racing in the future? Seems like it would be a good fit for you with your overall fitness and (obvious) descending ability.
  • + 12
 Hey Greg,

What is your opinion on social media athletes? (YouTubers, instagramers)

Thanks,

Eric

PS. Good luck this season!
  • + 0
That is a great question! I'm unsure about the "lifestyle" athlete..... I'm from the generation where when I started out (late 90's) everything revolved around racing
  • + 12
What was the best beer you have ever tried?
After many many years would you like to race the track in Todtnau once again?
  • + 21
An open beer Thats a cool track, would love to race there again
  • + 10
As the last rider down the hill, you have the run of a lifetime and just pip the former leader for the win. Who from across your career do you most enjoy knocking our of the hot seat?
  • + 40
Sam Hill or Arron Gwin. Not for any other reason but how tough they are to beat
  • + 10
Is there any truth in the rumours that you are 90% foreskin and only 10% shaft?
  • + 2
 You’re my hero!!!
  • + 6
Hilarious, I guess we know Gwin's secret username.
  • + 244
 Wahaha, your mother should know
  • + 6
I believe, and I'm sure many others agree, that you are South Africa's greatest living sportman, however, DH does not get the exposure in South Africa that XC or Road does (for example the Epic that's happening right now).

My question is why, considering the amazing locations that we have to offer, is downhill so far behind in SA? Right now it's an almost underground culture. Will PMB ever have another World Cup? Maybe another location in the Western Cape or even the Drakensberg might be ....epic!
  • + 1
Well he is sponsoring the provincial races this year. The main sponsor on top of that as well. So if anyone is working hard at making it a more mainstream sport it's the goat. But I think it's a sport a lot of people don't get exposed to at a young age. Plus unlike in other countries, it's not a sport the government's sporting entities support, whatever their reason for this might be.
  • + 9
29ers for bigger guys or for everyone?

PS: All the best for the new season
  • + 4
Ummm, If you're on a medium size bike, I would say go 29 Thanks
  • + 8
What's your thoughts on high single pivots, (Aurum hsp or commencal) If you ever left santacruz would you consider giving them ago
  • + 11
Single pivot, I thought those were a big hit in the early 2000's. So they've done a full circle! wahaha No just kidding, the frechies seem to make them work pretty well, so I guess they can't be to bad
  • + 8
 Hi Greg
Any tips to fight arm pump and having the right mindset for a race?
  • + 14
Bike time cures arm pump. Focus, a ton of focus
  • + 5
Are you scared when you go for a big move like your "pull up" near the bottom of Mont St. Anne? (BTW, I vividly recall watching you do it in practice - the only one I saw who did. Amazing!) To what degree is the fear in a big move like that balanced by confidence? Is a race run 100% confidence, or how much does fear factor into the balance of choosing what you will and won't do? Do you ever "roll the dice" in a race run, or are you completely confident in your ability to pull off all the big moves you make to shave time?
  • + 9
What would it take to get you to hit the big step down at Hardline?
  • + 7
Probably a trip to ratboys house if u know what i mean Wink
  • + 59
Holy Moly, you don't understand how big that step down is. Those Atherton's are crazy, I'd love to know what they were on when they decided to build Hardline.
  • + 6
Have you ever tried out an idler pulley on a V10 to minimize chain-growth/pedal-kickback?

If not, have you ever purposely done chainless runs to compare the suspension activity, and what we’re your thoughts?
  • + 8
I heard Gwin tucks his shirt into his underpants for races, can you confirm or deny?
  • + 4
 who knows
  • + 1
You know Minaars gonna double take next time >_!
  • + 5
Have you ridden any other non-sc DH bikes in the last 3-5 years that differ somewhat to the v10 (ex: single pivot, alloy, Horst-link, high pivot w/-wo/ idler, etc)?

If not, which one would you like to try?

And if so, what are your honest thoughts on how it is different (better/worse) in any way to the V10 vpp layout?

I won’t tell Santa Cruz what you say don’t worry Wink haha
  • + 4
What do you think are the reasons why Africa and Asia haven't caught up with Europe, Aus/NZ, and North America in terms of youth development in DH? If DH were an Olympic sport do you think Africa and Asia would catch up somehow (ostensibly due to better funding)?
  • + 4
I can tell you why in Africa. Too much politics and massive financial drain on the rider / sponsors. It's definitely one of the most expensive sports here even with a sponsor/s.
  • + 11
I would say it is due to funding.
  • + 4
Greg: You are the GOAT. Do you attribute some if not a great portion of winning due to the fact that you are meticulous about bike set up? I am the same and constantly evaluating suspension, reach, wheel base , ect. I think for what ever it is worth your attention to detail is inspiring to say the least. I look forward to seeing you at the top of the box this year and hopefully years to come. Please help Loris haha
  • + 5
Do you remember 3 years ago in Fort William where we had been chucked out of a pub and the tried to get into a taxi but ended up heading butting the driver's window?
  • + 1
 Is this true Greg?
  • + 1
haha. I can remember seeing a very drunk Greg in the wetherspoons downing a guiness
  • + 3
 Hi Greg,
You are on my DH Fantasy team this year and I am sure you won't disappoint me Smile
I really like the Syndicate videos when you are working on setting up your bike to perfection. Can you really feel the difference?
Thanks,
Emma
  • + 5
Ahoj Greg, what is the best and the worst about travelling the world most of the year? What country if not South Africa would you like to call home? good luck and ride fast!
  • + 6
Hey Greg, for a rider like you are, who was the hardest rider to beat in your entire career ? Who is it today ?

Thanks !
  • + 17
 Sam Hill and Aaron Gwin
  • + 5
After such a lengthy and successful career do you still get those pre-race nerves when in the start hut or is it not particularly daunting these days?
  • + 12
Yea man, I get super nervous
  • + 3
If you could have another Honda bike (with gearbox, and idler for low chaingrowth/pedal-kickback), except with 29” wheels and modern geometry, would you like to give it a go? And how do you think it would compare to your current V10
  • + 5
Do you think Honda should have continued to develop mountain bikes, or was their departure appropriate?
  • + 10
I think they should of continue
  • + 4
Greg, what is the best way for a new racer to get faster, is it sheer time on the bike, focused skill practice, or riding with faster peers?

Thank you
  • + 2
Hi Greg, after your active career (may many more years come!) qould you consider running for some offical? Maybe UCI Downhill coordinator/president? As you already seem to be involved in some of the process?
Cheers,
Michael
PS: saw you win in 2012 in Leogang! That was awesome!
  • + 16
Yea you never know, I think UCI could do with a Gravity guy in their offices
  • + 3
 @gregminnaar:
Greg for President!!!
  • + 3
As a tall dude myself (around 6'3", 190-ish cm), what benefits did you see in moving from 27.5" to 29"? Similar to the move from 26" to 27.5"?

Also, what was the worst injury you've had to recover from?
  • + 4
27.5 was a stepping stone, at 6.3 you'll feel at home on 29. The worst was probably compartment syndrome in my left quad, that got a little scary
  • + 2
 Hey,
I’m 6’3 & on a trail bike with 485mm reach but don’t feel as comfortable doing whips, drifts & cutties as some of my bikes from 10 years ago with 440mm reaches. How do you decide on handlebar height? Are 35mm stems too short?

Maybe I’m just 10years older.......
  • + 2
Greg, your career as a Pro has seen success over 2 different decades where most riders never even manage to get onto the podium. What do you think has allowed you to see so much sustained success. How do you still get motivated to train and compete at such a high level after all these years?
  • + 5
If you lost your bike on the way to WC but could ride any animal down the track instead, what would you choose and why?
  • + 18
 Mountain Goat
  • + 2
What is your stance on the whole flats vs clips debate? For you DH riders, it seems crazy that you would attach yourself to a bike especially down like Val Di Sole. Would you recommend clips for all DH riders or just those racing?
  • + 7
Its personal preference. I like racing clipped in, it makes me ride smoother. But when not racing I love riding flats, can smash turns, ride more aggressively etc
  • + 1
You have amazingly survived at the top for so long, and you find a way to always get faster. Do you find yourself changing your style over time along with bike geo changes and overall progression? Interested in how you reflect on this.
  • + 1
You’re a really fun rider to watch on and off the track, but on-track filming is relatively limited. Any chance you’d consider filming more POV or trail riding edits in the off-season outside of promotion for a specific product?
  • + 2
And without saying what it is, do you have a secret pinkbike username?
  • + 1
Hi Greg, I was recently watching old footage form the 2007-8-9 WC in Bromont, Canada. (my hometown)

Are there any plans to get the Syndicate together in Bromont? We have a friendly DH series that runs Until September, it would be fun to get some pro's back and show us how it's done!

The ''Pierres-a-feu'' are missing the action, and so are we!
  • + 1
Hey Greg! You’ve got quite a number of years to go. But when you do retire, will you be taking on a role and travelling with the Syndicate WC team or just hang out at your bike shop, ride bikes and play golf? Good luck and all the best for the upcoming season, champ!
  • + 6
I think when its my time, the traveling will slow down as well, but you never know.
  • + 1
greg do you ever dial down the suspension for the less rugged tracks and beef it up for say fort bill I ask as in one race recently a racer did really well on his endure bike with just 170 travel ( can't remember who tho sorry)
  • + 1
You ever come around Tahoe still to ride and hang around the lake?
What do you think about the original Durango, CO World Cup being rebuilt and possibly raced again in the future?
Still cherish those days years ago getting to ride with you a bunch! Rooting for you and hoping this is your best season yet! Keep killing it and being the role model and inspiration you are to myself and everyone else
  • + 1
Ja swaer! I've always had you as a rider that rode a lot over the front of the bike but in later years it seems you are shifting more central. Is this due to longer bikes making it look like you are more central or are you in fact putting less pressure over the front. Your tyre choice also seems to shy away from front/rear specific tyres would this be down to not needing as much grip on the front nowadays?
  • + 2
 HI greg,

How sensitive are you to changes in tire pressure? For example could you feel a difference of 1.5psi or is that splitting hairs?
How particular are you about tire pressures?
  • + 1
How do I control myself in the air after going off of a bigger jump...AKA how do I not land diagonal and crash? It seems like you need to perform some sort of whip to or be 100% arms locked and straight to land a bigger jump correctly.
  • + 1
it's all in the approach my man! What happens in the air doesnt matter, it's how you take off the matters! Try pumping a bit more with your legs when on the takeoff, and keep those arms nice and straight-ish.
  • + 1
Hi Greg a night you may not forget... The night Nigel page got arrested by the police, a night we got thrown out of every single bar in the town, even a gay bar, a night we sat and played poker, it was the day a fellow friend took his well deserved rainbow jersey. Where was it?
  • + 1
I recall ya having a lil cardio thing couple years back. As we age I know it's something to watch out for, I've noticed a few interesting things myself and know others have as well (though rare). Just curious if you had anything to chime in on that as far as what was learned etc.
  • + 1
@gregminnaar what are your thoughts on the whole racing with different wheel sizes? Seeing Neko Mullalys posts about his time differences running different combinations of wheel sizes is extremely intriguing and now the proto specialized bike looks to be running 29r front and 27.5 rear. what are your thoughts on this set up!
  • + 1
Is there a particular skill set you wish you had spent more time developing throughout your career or as a young rider? Either DH focused, or even a different sort of discipline such as; trials/BMX/dirt jump/slopestyle etc.
Wishing you all the best this season Greg!
  • + 2
Hi Greg as a racers coming into my last year in the youth category , under 16 I would like to know the one tip you would give to me or that you would give to yourself back when you where racing as a child thanks Niall ????
  • + 1
Hey Greg - so stoked you are still racing and smashing it still... any tips on pre-race or post-race nutrition that you can share or perhaps something that has changed for you recently (in the nutrition area) that really has worked for you that you can share? Thanks!
  • + 2
 Hi Greg,

so stoked to have you here! What are you expectations for the upcoming season? Do you feel strong enough to fight for the overall? I hope so and wishing you all the best!

See you in Maribor! Smile

Cheers
Pawel

I have one of your old x4 bikes. I think around 2004? I got it from north west mountain bike centre a longg time ago.

Not really a question just something I thought you might like to know Big Grin If you have any more info on it or if you won the x4 championship that year would be really cool to know =) www.pinkbike.com/photo/9050989
  • + 3
after such a long racing career, what keeps it fresh for you? what keeps you coming back?

also, who parties harder, Peaty or Josh?
  • + 1
Back in the 2000's when you would go down to Laguna Beach and go to Sven and Anka's house to ride. What is your favorite Laguna trail and what good story can you tell us that sticks out being at their house. Team Honda/Turner.
  • + 1
I'd never been to their place. I have ridden Laguna, not sure what the name is of the trail, Blick knows all the good trails out there
  • + 2
Hi, do you ever worry/get scared about a feature on a track e.g. big drop/road gap, or a gap jump, if so how do you overcome the mental challenge, the
Little nagging voice in your head?
  • + 1
  • + 3
Greg, if you were stranded on an island and could only have 1 person with you would you take Luca or Loris (sorry those are your only options)?
  • + 3
Do you think the new generation that was so successful last year will hold the throne again with you and Gwin healthy? Or the race still yours to win?
  • + 11
Great question. I don't know, its going to interesting to see
  • + 5
How far are you looking down the trail
  • + 6
 5 to 10m
  • + 4
Do you and other pro riders read pinkbike or other online magazines and their comment section?
  • + 4
Greg, you've raced so many races. Out of all of them which is your favourite Beatles song?
  • + 5
 Come Together
  • + 4
Will you ever be consistent EWS racer? Or just the fun enduros / out of WC season races?
  • + 3
Fun for now. Its a great format but use not ready for it
  • + 5
Why are the French so fast?
  • + 2
 Probably cheese related
  • + 3
@Bigwill13: Cutting it gives them methane, err, nitrous boosts
  • + 10
French lines! No just kidding. They have such a competitive national series, and state series for that matter
  • + 5
Do you listen to music before a race, if so what type????
  • + 5
 calm tranquil music
  • + 2
 @gregminnaar: Thanks for replying
  • + 4
Set your bike up to cater to your strengths or help your weak areas?
  • + 1
Have you tried a longer size V10 frame than what is currently available to the public? I still think a bigger frame would suit your size. Especially with shorter offset and shorter stems becoming more popular. Thanks
  • + 3
No I haven't, this is the longest I've ridden
  • + 4
Do you think 'Megatower' is a bit Sharknadoy?
  • + 4
 what you mean?
  • + 2
How many takes were needed to nail the ending of the Tallboy V3 launch video when you rode across the finishline and opened a beer with the spokes?
  • + 3
Dear Greg, Olympic Games: Mid-Term or Long-Term goal for DH?
You're a great ambassador! All the best, Martin Wink
  • + 7
Long term Thanks a lot Martin
  • + 0
 Correction:*Medium-Term
  • + 2
Greg minnar as you were growing up who was your insperation on the tracks and what was/is your ultimate bike thanks karl Htdhbikes
  • + 9
Johnny T, Peat, Palmer and Nico. I loved watching them all. I would say my biggest inspiration didn't really come from the riders, but more the scene. I remember watching the guys at 97 World Champs playing on the slalom, I knew then that that was the live I wanted to live . I raced an XC bike in those days, so any DH was a dream. But the Sunn had to top this list
  • + 1
What sunn was your favorite bike @gregminnaar:
  • + 3
Hello Greg, do you also train in the Gym and how often do you train and what exercizes? Thanks and good luck for 2019
  • + 6
I do, roughly 4 times per week. Most main muscle groups really, probably not enough core, hence the man bod wahaha. And a lot of rehabbing
  • + 1
@gregminnaar: how do you have time to bike with 4 days gym ;D thx for the answer
  • + 3
Jordi And Jason. Who's your favorite to mess with when comes to small changes.
  • + 5
Has to be Jordi, he just give you so much content to work with hahahaha! . I dare mess with Marshy, he's the guy i need to trust the most
  • + 3
I've been more worried about the political climate in South Africa affecting you (non-mtb related). How are you holding up?
  • + 6
Things aren't so smooth here at the moment, but we a positive nation and won't let things like this effect us
  • + 1
Saw you 2 weeks ago at the Lisbon airport, you let my wife and I go into the elevator as you had a cart full with your bikes. Kicking myself for not asking for a picture. All the best to you in the coming season!
  • + 2
Is it true Paul Aston cut his hair to look more like you ?

Do you hate the bike industry for making you wait until 2018 to finally get a bike of the good size ?
  • + 2
Why does Marshy think the Syndicate needs a new rig so bad? I worked out of a rental car in european world cups! Wink
YOLO BRO!
  • + 4
What is the funniest syndicate story that you can publicly share?
  • + 3
Do you think many racers over think line choice and bike set up? Why not just use your base settings and ride main line.
  • + 4
We probably do, but there's a lot of pressure to be the best you can in one run. I agree you probably could
  • + 1
Greg, what’s do you want in the bike when you setting the suspension? What’s the most important parameter for you when you setting the suspension? Grip, compliance, geometry, non-dive?
  • + 2
 Balance which relates to geometry
  • + 4
 Greg, In 10 years time......
  • + 12
Hanging loose! Flip who knows, probably doing the same thing I'm doing now wahahaha
  • + 1
Sir legend Greg, after you pass some days in Lousã what you have to say about the tracks and all the concern about them for the world cup there in 2020 ? Have a nice season \m/
  • + 2
I love Lousa. Continue to build the way you have in the past, that riding is amazing
  • + 1
@gregminnaar How was the Spartan in Morzine? We were with our DH bikes on the bridge watching you :-) www.vitalmtb.com/videos/member/THE-SYNDICATE-2016-Episode-5-Lenzerheide,31825/iceman2058,94
  • + 1
On tires. How much time do you put into the tires you are going to use for quali and race runs? Do you bolt on new rubber or have a couple runs on them before you race do you prep the tires with anything?
  • + 1
What would you tell a young guy just starting? (Younger version of yourself?) I've been riding for years and want to get in the race scene (how?), and I'm also tall. Smile What's important to focus on bike/skill-wise... Thanks!
  • + 4
Hey Greg - What do you think of Yolandi Visser?
  • + 4
How is to be a pro mountain biker in south Africa?
  • + 17
Perfect, know one gives a damn about mountain bikers, its all rugby and cricket here.
  • + 1
Are you a "Retire at your peak" or "Do it till you can't no more" kind of guy?
Do you see yourself racing another 5-10 years?
  • + 3
What's next for Greg Minnaar? After racing what do you see yourself doing?
  • + 2
Hi Greg, what do you think the "cons" of these newer bikes in XL with reaches over 500+?
  • + 1
@gregminnaar How many years do you think it will be before we are all riding E bikes?! (Excluding DH although would be nice to have some self shuttle DH rigs too)
  • + 2
You've had a lot of big name teammate over the years. Who was the best to travel with, and who was the best to train with?
  • + 1
What are your thoughts on the new UCI downhill snow races?
Would you be interested in competing and representing South Africa in the Winter Olympics?
  • + 1
Thought I saw you at a stop light in Walnut Creek, CA. Had a mild geek out. When you are in the Bay, where do you like to ride?
  • + 1
I’m sure you had a big role in developing the Megatower. What features of the bike are you most happy with? What kind of riding style is best suited to it?
  • + 3
 Who's on your fantasy team?
  • + 2
How can I get my suspension feeling sweet just with adjusting the angle of my brake levers?
  • + 5
brake levers down more weight on the front end, the rest is up to you
  • + 2
What did cross through your mind after snapping that frame and walking away?
  • + 2
Any tips for especially tall riders ? maybe some training tips or special techniques ?
  • + 1
Also how many prototypes of the assegai did you test before you were happy with final product?

thanks for answering all these btw.
3
  • + 1
What brand is that jacket with the asymmetrical zipper you wore while touring your new house with Rob Warner on whatever Red Bull thing I saw? Shit was hot.
  • + 1
How can a normal rider tune the suspension properly. Can you give some advice or your base settings. for dh thanks and good luck!
  • + 3
If you were following the Syndicate Insta, my suspension setting were shared. Shoot a message to Syndicate and Im sure they can send you my settings. Thats if you riding Santa Cruz with Fox, otherwise they probably not going to help you
  • + 1
 Hi Greg
hope you well , having you being training quite a bit this year ?, or is the PMB dh race your first ride on DH bike , next to FOX testing ?
  • + 3
Yes all good thanks. I've ridden more this off season then I ever have, but the race in PMB was my first event this year
  • + 3
Which size Megatower will you opt for, XL or XXL?
  • + 4
 Im going XL
  • + 1
Greg, I'm curious what your current weight and height are, as well as the spring rate you run on the rear shock of your bike?
  • + 1
Greg- Having ridden the Honda RN01, what do you think the main stumbling block stopping development of a competitive gearbox WC DH bike? Efficiency?
  • + 1
Thanks PB and GM. I thoroughly read and enjoyed above comments. GM is discretely had training in Wakanda to achieve 75 WC podiums. Smile
  • + 3
Sainte Anne or Fort William, only one stays in. Which?
  • + 2
I saw you playing accordionin one video, have i had too much to drink or was it you?
  • + 1
I know they are great for tall guys, but do 29" wheels make crashes more likely with the increased speed and higher center of gravity of the wheels?
  • + 3
But we want to go faster and crash less. I don't know, but now you going make me over think it. I hope Marshy doesn't see this, he's gonna want me to run a rear face stem again.... Like a motocross bike.
  • + 2
@gregminnaar: Ha, don't overthink it 29ers are perfect for big guys like you. Thanks and have a great season.
  • + 1
Greg, if from your very birth you were granted the ability to stop the time and re-experience a single moment in your life forever, what would that moment be?
  • + 2
Who would you like to see replace you on the Syndicate when the time comes?
  • + 2
What's the friends and family discount code? Looking forward ro buy a new Megatower. See you in MSA and Snowshoe Bru! ????
  • + 4
 Best tip for cornering?
  • + 1
Hi Greg, the first thing to ask you that came to my mind was: what was your most precious win and why? Thanks for your answer and good luck in 2019 season !
  • + 1
Can you fill me in on that hand/wrist contraption. I broke my hand last year and needed surgery. Still not right and having trouble with riding.
  • + 2
@onemanarmy I know it doesn't mean as much not coming from Greg Minnaar, but just going on looks that appears to be a Mobius X8 brace. Mobius and Allsport Dynamics both make top of the line wrist braces. Not sure either will help in your situation with a hand injury, but check 'em out if you're interested and good luck with your recovery!
  • + 2
Which has been the most "exciting" bike to race on over the years..?
- Honda
- First 29" V10
- Something else..?

  • + 7
My girlfriend is laughing, she says she would also like to know.
  • + 3
If you retire from WC will you race Masters DH?
  • + 8
I don't think it would be fair if I had to race Masters world as an ex pro, but I'd probably turn up to ride and hang out with old mates
  • + 4
@gregminnaar: I'd be keen to see alot more Ex Pro racing the Masters DH.
  • + 2
What is your favorite bike of all time? What is the first bike you won a race on?
  • + 1
First win was on an Orange. Most wins have been on Santa Cruz V10

Motos have the front brake on the right, juste like mtb's in the UK.
  • + 1
Grego, what is your pre meal race day ?? we know about beer post race. whats your favorite beer?? cheers
  • + 0
The Assegai tire looks like a cross between a Magic Mary and Hans Dampf. It is sucks they only make in a DH casing and not a lighter version.
  • + 1
FYI, EXO + and DD casings out this year. Some shops already have stock. Ran the DH casing last summer. Was a great tire. Going to be awesome in a better trail worthy casing.
  • + 1
Are you going to use oversize brakes rotors this season? (more than 203 cm)

Thanks and good luck this season.
