You know it's a proper DH course when the winner rides a 120mm Specialized Camber...
  • + 1
do you have any links for pics of the bike ?
  • + 77
A few years ago he won it on a Yeti 4X with the seat post at full height. Graves could probably ride a wheelie bin at mach 10.

 @Fix-the-Spade: haha craziness .

The Sea Otter DH course is about as far from a "proper DH course" as it gets. More like flowy Super Enduro at best.
  • + 10
There is literally not a single rock or root on the whole track.
  • + 17
Sea otter DH you mean single stage enduro?
  • + 30
Oh look, another dozen posts stating something obvious everyone has known about for years... color me surprised.
  • + 1
@scott-townes: thanks for the link dude , wow i have to admit it's a dope bike ! ...
  • + 3
Every year people complain about the DH course at Sea Otter not being DH enough. I say if you think it's lame then you aren't going fast enough.
  • + 8
@scjeremy: I think there is 4 rocks there
  • + 3
Suprised nobody is talking about wheel size here Smile

Not sure it was intended to be super "proper." Sea Otter is for everyone to participate and have fun. That's why there is also Cat 1, 2, 3, and junior, plus all those are broken down into age groups too, tons of classes to get everyone out. There was even a hardtail downhill class. Always tons of fun, can't wait for next year.

Raced there this weekend, can confirm that the course is a joke. They ripped out all the double lips and let the braking bumps grow as deep as 6". People were pedaling the entirety of the course and the fattest jump was maybe 6 yards lip to landing. They also took out the rhythm sprint at the bottom and just dumped dirt in weird spots and let it rut out.

Instead of having the juniors and cat 3's race a different course (just like Fontana, Northstar, anywhere decent) they sent all of the riders over the 3-set of rollers and down into the shark fin. Within 30 mins of me getting to the hecklers line 5 kids went down hard. Course marshal fell asleep, some photographers and parents had taken their role in announcing fallen riders.

I and many others feel like we wasted our money. They don't care about the riders when they rip out the one jump that has the fewest relative casualties without announcing it at all to the people that put down cash to race. They don't care about the experience when they take out what little resemblance to real downhill there was and leaving the race to a fireroad sprint. Sandbagging runs wild and 10 Kids that lead in Cat 3 are running 2:31's down with Cat 2's podium 4 seconds ahead of the consistent start of 2:28 down. With lineups for practice spanning 45 minutes and practice running for 60 Sea Otter has run into a disaster and they know it very well. The volunteers are running around doing the best they can to fix what is really supposed to be a trade show. Something has to change.

@hollowing2000: Lets change that... you could race that course on a 100mm 29er.
  • + 64
 120mm is the new 200mm
  • + 59
 XC is the new DH

@vikb: tbh that was better than my original comment :-)

 "Bas Von Sternbergen"
  • + 14
It is supposed to say von Steamburger.
  • + 4
He's my favourite comic book villain, but sadly crime doesn't pay the bills.
  • + 2
 The Hamburgerler?
  • + 1
The names this weekend got gnarly. About a dozen people got their last names trimmed beyond recognition and anything past 4-Syllables was a shot in the dark.
  • + 6
Bas of Stone Mountains (that's what his name translates into from Dutch)
  • + 2
 @cvoc: SO PUNK ROCK
  • + 21
A full 2 seconds on the entire field is a lifetime on this course. Graves was smashing.

I dont think anyone should be reading into these results for the WC guys. Theres no benefit for them to push hard at the odd-ball Sea Otter track and risk a crash right before their real season starts.
  • + 7
 Nice work Bas Van Steenburgshurtbusijgat...
  • + 7
A dh win with specy camber?????
  • + 6
Why does Jill not have a World Cup ride
  • + 13
Sam Kingshill needs to be on the WC circuit!!!!!!!! That young lady can rip!! I could have sworn I listened to a podcast where Jill liked not being tied down.....doing what she wants when she wants.....
  • + 3
@Solidsnake: Yea, I imagine it's not that fun to have to spend all your time training and focusing on one thing, and dealing with the business side of support for it as well. Especially when she has an Olymipic medal, not much to prove after that.
  • + 1
@Solidsnake: What podcast do you listen to that relates to mountain biking?
  • + 1
She did a few years ago. Got a 3rd in 2014. Her website says she has 5 UCI WC DH podiums and that seems to match what I found here: www.hookit.com/members/jillkintner

She raced BMX for years and was a peer of ACC in 4x when she moved to riding MTB.
  • + 1
@JoshGibbs: it's called "The New Standard." I found it a few months ago. The interview was done in June 2016.

flag rockymountainsrule (Apr 23, 2017 at 19:21) (Below Threshold)
because she gets her ass whipped
  • - 2
@rockymountainsrule: that, and she doesn't want to race world cup anymore. everytime she wins some crappy dh event like this someone says she should race WC. She did for 2-3 seasons, and had 3 podiums according to hookit, and mostly finished in the 8-12 range or crashed out. Not saying she's not a strong rider and great athlete, but the idea she could, or can compete with the likes of Rachel or the other top women needs to be put to rest.
  • + 0
 Because Rachel Atherton is greedy?!?!?!
  • + 4
@pinkbike - you should show the junior times, too. Both the 15-16 & 17-18 kids were beating people who get paid to race bikes at this race, again.
  • + 4
I wouldve liked to see Caroline win, actually I just like to see caroline
  • + 4
 Such bollox
  • + 1
"Sea Otter DH" AKA stage one of the "Sea Otter Enduro". I've raced Enduro last 3 years it's not really a Enduro race but a super D that has 4 stages.
  • + 1
So what chain sponsor is Gwin having? Maybe he should try a different one and "black it out"?
  • + 2
Mike Day, Jill kitner, buchanan good to see bmx names
  • + 1
You forgot about the lovely Beerten
  • + 1
Anybody else feel that if this was a proper downhill course, Gwin would have probably won a second race without the chain?
  • + 1
It is not a real downhill course, and they removed the only real jump. It is a great venue overall and still fun to watch.
  • - 1
i cant belive they dont move it up to santa cruz. only 45min away and we have several nice dh places they can do it at. infact they could do the whole sea otter classic here. we have sea otters in our habour also lol
  • - 1
 Hear hear
  • + 11
What legal trails could you run and what venue would hold 80,000 people in Santa Cruz? Appreciate Sea Otter for what it is.
  • + 1
There are many... tons of testing gets done by companies in the santa cruz mtns. way better camping, and they could make it work. i think its more political cause of the towns name.
  • + 1
@krumpdancer101: but those trails in the SC mountains aren't legal. They can't run a race on illegal trails.
  • + 0
 ??? OK SURE
  • + 1
 this 43jared is damn quick
  • + 2
 Hardtail track dumb lol
  • + 0
I would say they need to remove ( DH ) from the race description and come up with some other name.
  • + 11
Why? It's a mountain bike race exclusively down the hill, so why not call it Downhill?
  • + 3
@Jaiello: It is not exclusively downhill. There are 3 uphill sprints
  • + 0
@Jaiello: the poor kids there...gna think they saw a proper dh race.
Parents got some splaining to do.
  • - 1
Ask Pink bike. Why does Gwin have so many mechanical issues? Shaty mechanics or the man above?
  • + 0
Weird the amount of chain issues he has.
