Been watching the 50-01 Cedric vlogs for the past few days, and I really want Ratboy to kill it. Dude just seems like he's always having a blast on his bike, and it's contagious!
@scott-townes: Rat has never said that in print or video--it was a Claudio comment during Rat's last DH race. It's Claudio that trolled us. Or Rat trolled Claudio : )
It's good that Minnaar wasn't there. It would be at least 10 exchanges of Tweeter butthurtness with Peaty and Lopes using hashtags like #notarealsport #notagoodcourse #oldguysrule #sad
On the outside Wyn is all fun and games, party all night. But behind the scenes he is a world class athlete. Damn what's brand ambassador who can achieve both.
Times are really close. Rude is sitting in 39th but is only 1 min 8 seconds back. I'm not sure on the course for tomorrow, but it still seems like it's anyone's race, especially if there are some longer stages.
You reckon? I always thought hometown advantage was always gonna be a big part of today's race (as it was in '15). I was not surprised at all to see Wyn and Matt on the podium. I had Keegan up there too instead of Eddie, but hey.
Surprises for me were how well Sam Hill and Ratboy went.
Amazing riding — the conditions made the racing pretty tough going.
@DDB1: the fact that Sam hill and rat boy did well says a lot about about the tracks as they are quite possibly the two most technically gifted riders in the field
you can find the latest race feed on www.enduroworldseries.com/live Looks like the men outside the top 30 rode stage 1 in the dry and then the rain came
All of the top guys were screwed by the starting order. Heard it was a big advantage to be starting early before the trails were totally destroyed. Notice that none of the top 10 guys were were up there. BTW Adrien Dailly would have won if not for the issue on Stage 3. Crazy fast for his first Pro race after moving up from U21.
@salespunk: Yeah, and the earlier starting guys got the rain on other stages. It is what it is. Just racing and having fun.
Starting in the third to last group yesterday in the Challenger was, however, somewhat of a handicap. We started 40mins after the first group but were still expected to make the stage cutoffs in the same time as the first groups. We were racing from the roll off, and playing catch up all day.
Slippy and fun, nonetheless, and I was putting in times faster than when I last rode the trails and that was when the trails were dry, unlike yesterday.
@salespunk: mate that's racing, champs don't sweat that stuff, it swings in roundabouts sometimes going last is an advantage, prob not today, but said yesterday he should have taken the 5.5 29er for the mud, still he's a champ came back to 20th so some damage control for the series!
@salespunk: I know...nuts right??? I thought Dailly would be fast this year but he's gonna be challenging for the overall because of this race. If he can stay consistent he'll be a threat every race.
He actually looks set to take 2nd. Up 18 seconds gointo stage 7. Not surprised as he absolutely screamed by me at last year's vedder enduro. Kid is fast!
Conditions looked slick. The dh boys took part in the not so dh but still dh race on a smaller bike and killed it. It just shows how transferable the skills are. The dh boys train super hard so deserve all they get. It's a shame there isn't an overall for xc enduro 4x and dh for a season. Would be a great watch.
The timing on EWS site is bizzare. It has several riders' results for all 5 stages, some for 4, some 3, some 2 and several (Rude among others) only for one stage. Was there a weird staggered start or something?
I assume Sam Hill became fast as he used to be before he started to loose DH speed. I׳m pretty sure that if he will go race DH again he will pass qualify and even get a good result.
Wheelie Wednesday ftw!
Congrats to all the winners, all the riders are winners that competed in those conditions in all classes!
Classy!
That be racing dawgs!!
@jclnv: It's just weather, and when it rains things get wet. He was sociable enough last Sunday evening when he and Curtis Keene chatted to me at the entrance to Hot X Buns, so I'd just say it was a bad day at the office for him. Either that or he is thinking of the laundry bill for wearing white kit when riding in the wet and mud
He'll have battle stories, and laugh about it tomorrow.
The trails don't get ripped up that bad in Vegas when it rains as you rarely get standing water (it all sinks into the peat/sand/pumice/dirt combination that is Vegas dirt). Te Rua, which was stage 1, would have been the worst hit as it's very steep, tight off camber corners, and only a few months old, but the others are all well weathered from multiple years of use and handle the rain quite well. The Rocky Horror section at the end of stage 5 would also be tricky as the rocks / boulders in there are mossy and slippery on even a dry day.
All that being said, I bet you won't find any amateurs saying it was an abortion.
@handynzl: not for the type of trails they ride but more for the fact that it's the place where all locals go riding. Last day of transNZ turned out similar
@FlorentVN: So by that argument are you saying that all EWS races should be run where no-one ever rides? Or where there is no infrastructure for the EWS admin, or good access for training or practice? Or nearby accommodation?
People ride in Vegas because it's that damn good. Period.
All the locals where I live all ride in the same forest (the one nearest us); does that make it a bike park? I think not...the forestry workers keep chopping down the trees and planting new ones. Just like in Rotorua.
Skyline in Queenstown IS a bike park, by definition there is a permanent uplift and most of the trails are DH trails. Just like Skyline at Rotorua is a bike park. But Whakarewarewa / Redwoods (or if you're of the 90's riding generation like me, the Fredwoods) is an all mountain, working forest with some of the best trails in the world.
Yeah coz 65km of riding, 2000+m of vertical, 9hrs in the saddle, and primarily grade 5 trails ain't tough. Oh and wet and muddy. Come on down and give it a go.
Please please please let Eddie win this. The spirit of Enduro is STRONG!
Great job Adrien!
Forget everything you thought was going to happen in this race – you were wrong about it all!
Richie is barely scraping a top 50 place!
Adrien Dailly is leading after 2 stages!
And the Kiwis are killing it! They could take the top 10 at this rate]]]]
Said it read it and weap it
slipery when wet!!! BJV

Stages 3 and 5 would have been hellish in today's conditions - peanut butter mud, ruts, slippery roots and slick rock.

The locals just ride the tracks 20x more than anyone else simply because NZ is so far away from the bulk of the racing world.
Case in point, did everyone forget that Matt Walker grew up 40mins away and got a podium slot in this event 2 years ago.
PS Pavlova is ours!
What? I thought we were shouting???!!??!!??!!
