RACE OF THE YEAR. Awesome runs from the top 10. Danny Hart had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Aussie Aussie Aussie!!!!!!!!!
  • 72 0
Gutted fearon and Moir crashed would have both been top ten
  • 114 1
Long time coming for Troy, so stoked. Four races so far, with four different winners for both the men and women this year! What a season we're seeing unfold
  • 30 12
@Turboute: I feel like Fearon needs to work on his suspension setup, hard to finish a race when the bike refuses to stay on the ground or hold a line. Exciting to watch though!
  • 18 0
The last 5 runs pumped blood on my heart the most!we witnessed a real race ladies and gentlemen

@src248: ok go and give Connor a tip on suspension set up you f*ckin genius. He knows his set up inside out, the only reason these guys crash is because they're cutting the thinnest line between pushing too hard or not enough
  • 35 5
@chewedchook: dude you're so angry haha. Just look at loic or Greg or Troy s bike : wheels are touching the ground most of the time. Look at connors, and you will see the wheel constantly bouncing like the rebound settings are off
  • 68 2
By far the most amazing thing about that entire race, even more than Hart rolling the dice, was Bruni's bike. That thing was absolutely glued to the ground like I have never seen. Whatever Ohlins are doing to the suspension it's working incredably well.
  • 34 1
Even Red Bull had way more angles and cameras than usual or so it seemed. Great race. Watched the replay too.
  • 12 0
@jclnv: I totaly agree. It was like Loic is flowing on a cloud...
  • 4 0
@Turboute: Fearon s crash was fearless.
  • 17 0
Best race in a long time. Hart's run had me yelling at my screen! Fantastic runs from so many riders today. So good.
  • 23 0
I@endlessblockades: yeah redbull really did a good job on this race, the filming was awesome both in open section and tree sections. Cameras were placed in the good spots, or maybe it's just the track that is so good that you can't film it bad.
  • 6 0
Bruni on the new Sworks hovercraft. Those ohlin shocks are a thing of beauty. Never seen such smooth tracking like that @jclnv:
  • 3 0
@jclnv: glued too much, evidently ;-)
  • 12 1
@jclnv: I don't think it's just the bike. Bruni's technique has always been exceptional, and he was the only rider that looked flawless today.
  • 1 0
 Yup!
  • 5 2
racing was nothing but amazing, but l do mis the likes of hill.
  • 1 0
@stewspooner: Does Loic ride a small sized bike for his height? The bike looks small under him compared to many of the other riders. Either way, I like his style.
  • 4 0
 So stoked for Troy
  • 5 1
@src248: what if kona made him a horst link rear end to replace the single pivot he has currently? he wold have more control during hard braking, the way he wiped out... what if they did that for all their new bikes???
  • 7 2
I swear Warner and Claudio have a hard on for Minaar. Brosnan was killing it during his run and they say there in silence. My favorite quote from Claudio was him saying how he wonders how Minaar keeps his hair looking so good after wearing his helmet. He's good we all know it but just ease up a little and let Troy have his moment.
  • 2 1
@chewedchook: I agree man. I dont get all the neg props on your comment. I doubt Connor needs our advice on setting up his suspension...
  • 1 0
@src248: I re-watched Fearon, Hart, and Bruni. If Fearon's bike is set up badly, Hart's is far worse. Any chance they were both just closer to their limits, and Bruni was riding controlled and efficient, hitting all his lines?
  • 1 0
@MTBCAM8: No matter what you do to damping it won't make up for kinematics. You can easily tell Fearon's bike has too much anti-rise.
  • 2 0
@jclnv: Or maybe... he just reached, the Limit...
  • 2 0
@greg390: All those riders are incredible. I very much doubt Fearon was doing anything different to other riders who were riding at similar speeds. Some bikes are simply superior in certain aspects and it's clear that when the rear brake is applied, the Kona's suspension stiffens dramatically causing the rear tire to loose contact with the ground etc.
  • 1 0
@jclnv: Yes, right forgot about that , and speeds they reach .
  • 144 1
Times tighter than a set of mavic dh pants!!!
  • 6 3
The only thing I didn't like about the racing was all the tight pants.
  • 2 0
White color majors the thing, almost all others are as tights as mavic ones. Look at giant riders for exemple it is the same but less eye catching.
  • 89 0
Now that was a true DH course .Really showed the riders skills.
  • 22 0
Yep! Sick race... best of the season hands down
  • 19 0
Clearly a hard track but a fair one. No lottery here, just the best of the best showcasing their skill. Love it!
  • 4 0
Exactly what i thought. Best race so far. Couldn´t believe that someone can go faster after watching Danny Hart´s crazy run.
  • 74 2
 Hart's run was terrifyingly incredible!
  • 16 0
I wish I had a HR monitor on.
  • 5 1
Best run of the season by far. Its insane how close his run with those bobbles were to Gwin and Bruni's. sheeesh
  • 3 0
 Danny Hart's Wild Ride™
  • 5 2
He's an absolute animal, almost gave me a heart attack! When Gwin and Bruni went slower I thought he had it in the bag. Awesome, awesome race!

Good on Troy as well, he's qualified fastest about ten times. I thought he would mess it up again but no, another excellent win in 27.5.

Is it the beginning of the end for 29?
  • 3 3
@jaame: no, no its not.. Its only the beginning!
  • 59 4
4 of the top 5 on 27.5. Seems like it's more about the rider than the wheel size.
  • 13 1
Definitely more about the rider than the bike. Just look how different each rider's approach was. What a race!
  • 9 6
not to say the 29er crashes hohohoh
  • 12 33
flag dmc619 (Jul 1, 2017 at 9:33) (Below Threshold)
It looked like the 29er actually hurt Minaar going into the last two turns...possibly cost him the win.
  • 5 1
It doesn't matter how fast your wheels roll when you're pointing straight down the hill and on the brakes most of the track. Flatter tracks when you need to maintain speed is a different story.
  • 9 0
It's not about the wheel size. But it's beginning to look like the wheel size is about the RIDER. The taller guys finally have bikes that look proportional, and for Minnar and Moir at least, better-fitting bikes are allowing for an exceptional season. Danny Hart, not so much. He tried the 29er and it didn't work for him...but he is not a big guy, and neither is Troy Brosnan. Both seem to be doing their best riding on 27.5. So it may just be that which wheel size is fastest depends on how well it fits the rider, and we can stop arguing about it already. Or maybe 27.5 and 29 will both keep winning and we will keep arguing. Because that's what we do on PB!
  • 7 1
ive got over 300 tools in my toolbox. I don't ignore one of them because it's bigger or smaller than the rest. I just use the one that is most suitable to my needs.
  • 1 0
@kabanosipyvo: Finally someone who understands! 29er looked ridiculously huge under Pompon, no wonder she didn't like it.
  • 4 2
@kabanosipyvo: Vergier is slightly shorter than Hart and is having an awesome season. Hart stated in an interview that he switched back to 27.5 because he had not been able to spend enough time in testing/practice on the 29.

Next season there will be many more 29ers in the field that will actually be designed around that wheel size rather than using a modified 27.5 frame. At the end of the day, it's just another performance tool similar to brake rotor size.
  • 49 1
 YES TROY!!!! LAAAAAAAAADD!!!
  • 22 0
Soooo happy for Troy!!!! Sooo well deserved. And his team mate Mark Wallace in top 10 also!
  • 46 3
If anyone honestly thinks Minnaar is doing well because his wheels are 1.5 inches bigger, you're crazy. He's winning because he's Minnaar and having a great year - it happens to be that he's on 29 - he'd be up there regardless. Remember Rat won the WC overall on a 26, against a field of 27.5.
  • 26 0
I don't know, I think it has more to do with ratio of body size to wheel. Greg is 6 foot something, so him riding a 26er is like Hart riding a BMX nearly! The 29er wheel is just more proportionate to him.
  • 4 2
No he is not - he was competing on 26 till leogang where he won - rest of the season msa, windham, meribel + maybe sth and hafjell champs on 27,5 BRO
  • 6 0
@mtnryder56: yes, bottomline is your faster when your more comfortable.
  • 1 0
The only way we'd ever know is if he was on the same wheelsize as everyone else.

Well done Troy!!! Thoroughly deserved that win. ... But how does that GOAT manage to reinvent himself at every race at 36 years old ? He has an answer for every track they throw at him... Retire for what!!!

Man of the match though must go to Danny Hart! That course had his name written all over it

@MTB-Colada: sure sure, but if it was for Minnaar's tiny mistake it would have been a 29er at the top!

Anyway, I was rooting for Troy and CanyonSmile
  • 15 0
 @Milko3D: proportionately 29 is 27 under minaar...
  • 2 0
@Milko3D: True, but my comment would then still be valid (4 outta 5). Soo happy for Troy and Wallace too!
  • 41 8
And Gwinn would have beaten Minaar in FtWilliams if i hadnt made a HUGE mistake... give it up bro, its about the rider, not the wheels... according to the " industry " the wagon wheels should have a clear 3 sec advantage at least and clearly they dont .. Greg is a tall dude , always been a phenomenal racer and serious contender for the title. The bigger wheels suits is size and that make hims more comfortable to charge... The diameter of the wheels isnt winning races, the riders is .Now the industry needs to adress this as a sizing and comfort thing, not a speed advantage like they are trying to shove down our throats @Milko3D:
  • 22 4
@tuumbaq: get out of here with that logic dude. This is pinkbike. Tweens will be along to downvote you in a few mins for being realistic and respecting the riders.

Wheels make no difference. I have squares on mine bike, 29in squares though
  • 1 1
@Carl96: so u just drift down steep hills?
  • 9 1
@tuumbaq: I would love to see a defiant hero run a race on 26" wheels and get into the top ten. Magic Mary tires are still available in all sizes, they would just have to find some dusty Dee-Max wheels somewhere....

@dylandoe: Laurie Greenland could do it! www.vitalmtb.com/features/Maybe-26-Aint-Dead-Is-Laurie-Greenland-Being-Serious,1853

You can get DT EX471's in 26, just needs his mechanic to lace them up and find some Maxis Tyres.
  • 5 0
@MTB-Colada: was just playing, seems like people dislike a certain wheel size on principle.

If Greg hadn't ballsed up the last corners he woukd have won. Hang on, if Danny hadn't almost squashed himself on that braking area, he would have won. No, no, no, wait. If my dad was in the race and he was faster than everyone else, he would have won.

@ctd07: I think you took my comment way too seriously

MIND=BLOWN :O

Happy for Brosnan...well deserved!
  • 8 0
what an incredible race! Hart was back to his dominating confidence at riding at 110% and what a spectacle to see! then Loic threw down what looked to be a conservative run but was actually supreme control. Greg then dropped the mic with what looked to be the perfect run, the way he dropped his bike at the end, he knew that was the best run he was going to lay down. Finally with Troy beating it, not quite sure how he managed to post a quicker time than Greg but its been a long time coming and he certainly deserves it!
  • 11 0
Man that was awesome! Easily the best race of the year so far.
  • 10 0
YEAH TROY!!!! So stoked, you deserve it.
  • 5 0
Stoked for Canyon and Brosnan and Pompon!

Canyons first win in first season and another néw brand in WCs doing well in first season!

Dam that Ohlins suspension looked to be working well on Loics bike as well, looked like he could have pushed some more, that fork just looked amazing in action.

  • 4 1
@kabanosipyvo: Matching wheel size to bike/rider size makes sense to me. But I also wonder if some 29ers are better executed than others this early in the game... maybe SC and Intense are ahead of the game?
  • 3 0
Thats also what I think. Many of the teams seem like they got caught off guard with SC all prepared, and tried to quicky come up with a solution of their own- in a few weeks it was clear that everything was not as dialled

  • 2 0
I was trying to do the math with between Hart, Bruni, and Gwin. There is .15 (15 hundredths) of a second separating Hart and Gwin. If we use the qualifying speeds from the day before (I couldn't find the speeds for the finals), the speeds of the top riders averaged between about 51 and 53 kph. I found a speed calculator online and plugged in the numbers, using 52 kph as an average, and .15 seconds. The distance is 2.15 meters. So if Hart, Bruni, and Gwin were put together across the finish line at the finals in Androrra today they would be 1, 2, 3 in a row, just about touching tires. That is if my math is correct. The distance to the Brosnan and Minnaar would be closer to 29 meters. That is quite a few bike lengths. So what happened to Gwin? Looks like any of Hart Bruni and Gwin could have been number three on the podium. Solid riding by all of those riders.
  • 1 0
 @jorukfundan:

I found a track length of 2,19 km and with a finishing time of 4:06 that equates to 32,05 kp/h average.

0,15 s is a 1,33 meter gap at this average speed, but i'm not sure what the speeds actually are after that berm.

Edit: A speed trap is no average speed, it's a snapshot at just this particular point of the track
  • 2 0
@whoopsy: Nice work with the 32,05 kp/h average. So the trap speed that the UCI puts up is a snapshot of a particularly fast section of the course? I suppose it's useful to get a sense of how how fast these riders go when they let the brakes off.
With your calculation of 1,33 meters being the distance traveled in .15 of a second then all three of those riders are in a super transposed group of one as they cross the finish line. That is incredible over 2,19 km! Each choosing their own lines, different tires, pressures, suspension setup, riding techniques, etc. It is hard to say which factor makes the winner? They all ride very fast. But it is the errors that add up. Minnaar said he lost the race on the last turn or thereabouts. What this means is the racing is good and competitive. That's good for the sport. I can't hardly wait for the next race!

How is it not possible? Is red bull hurting for cash and can't afford a few extra cameras? In which sport is it acceptable to miss the first 1/3? None I tell you, absolutely none. Please let Eurosport or Sky sport or any other professional sports broadcasting company take over. Please.
  • 23 1
@Boardlife69: it's not possible because the riders go in 3 minute gaps. The course was over 4 minutes long. You do the maths genius.
  • 10 2
@Boardlife69: this is free, you simply cannot complain about free stuff. Sky or any other would make you pay, hence affording better gear. Now go back to your hole.

@cunning-linguist: I have never paid to watch a single sport on tv ever. This whole "dont complain because its free" is a BS. Why not make it a whole day event. If you can play criket for 5 days and still end on a tie then they can surely do one rider at a time. Make DH Great Again. Dont make pansy ass excuses.

Because unfortunately some of us have lives to live and can't spend all day in front of the tv! RIDE YOUR BIKE! @Boardlife69:

@Boardlife69: a whole day??? Get a job son and stop complaining. Life is not a TV show. You might as well just stick to watching "big brother".

@cunning-linguist: I wish I could go back to my hole, bu she's had a headache for three days now. And a whole day of chilling, grilling, and drinking with a bunch of riding friends with a DH race on the big screen IS living life, son.

@Boardlife69: you assume that Sky or Eurosport or any other sports broadcaster for that matter is clamoring for the broadcast rights to UCI DH world cup? Come on man. If there was a large demand with multiple other broadcasters wanting to bid for the exclusive rights UCI would be securing that bag. Red bull is what we've got. It's not perfect, but it is free, and I can watch it from the loo on my phone. It's not too bad...
