I know that the pros don't make a whole lot but they do have way more skill on tap and way more resources. I really would have like to see one of the "average joes" win instead. It would show that we can shred too and still have just as much fun as the pros. I really enjoyed the contest and seeing all the amazing lines and things people did for it but in the end I am kind of disappointed that the top three were all big-time professional riders who have sponsors because they are so good and not someone who buys their own bikes and gear and can still throw it down.
  • + 69
Or one that at least follows the rules set by the contest.... I'm stoked for Sorge but the people who ran this contest (not the judges) should be ashamed they ran this thing so unprofessionally and poorly. Where was the public voting period? What happened to half the rules that happened to disappear or still exist but still don't apply to the winning entries?
  • + 51
yeah the people paying for the go pro's should be the ones winning lol
  • + 28
100% agree very disappointing compared to the Pinkbike photo comps which are great.

The entries submitted, by Sorge, Van Dine etc were all submitted unedited (check out Sorge's from his page, www.pinkbike.com/video/386528 ). The slight edits made to the clips were made by GoPro on their end.

Public voting almost took place for this one and has been discussed that it would for the next version of this contest. But for several reasons didn't come together this time around.
  • + 28
Difficulty shooting - Kurt Sorge who used a chest mount... Not impressed
  • + 16
@karl-burkat "But for several reasons didn't come together this time around."
I suggest this is that first and last time this should happen. Not good PR for Pinkbike or GoPro.
  • + 19
In pretty much all public contests its stipulated that industry proffesionals are not eligible. It's silly to think that anyone other than a pro would win if they are allowed to compete. I feel silly for even having to point that out. They do this for a living. Everyone else had to do it in between their 9-5 jobs.
  • + 24
They spend over 20k on a contest and just for some reason or another they completely change up the contest? Haha, wow what a f*cking scam. Myself and I know a bunch of other people are not going to waste their time and risk their health the next time this contest comes around. Its not worth it especially when a pro can just pull out some old logged footage and submit it to win, regardless of what the rules state. Fabio, I'm sorry man you were robbed.
  • + 20
Gopro just faked a contest to get everybody involved and sell more cameras. Its probably cheaper than paying for advertising. Nothing more nothing less. Just a bummer PB fed into it.
  • + 8
not surprised......... go pro has always been, and will always be a douche bag company. they have sucked soooooooooo many people and other groups into doing their advertising for them. its been their sleezy m.o. since day one. proud to say i have never had one of those things attached to my bike or body...... ever.
  • + 37
This contest turned out to be a huge slap in the face to every rider who got out there and put a lot of work into having a minimal chance of winning this contest. I don't mean to talk shit on the pro riders who entered since there was no restriction towards who can enter this contest. But come on GoPro. GIve the normal people a chance.

We all know that the pros beat all of use in the performance & style category. But Sorge's entry taking first place in "beauty and lighting"? FOR REAL? A video shot on a side of mountain with almost no sun or good light winning in that category? You got to be kidding me.
Also, Perspective & Difficulty Shooting? a chest mounted gopro takes it? Again, YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

To GoPro: next time you do a contest like this: please let there be public voting. And please, for the love of god, make to categories: pro and non-pro.
AND: "Beauty & lighting"? I've seen some incredible lighting (like sunrise/sunset settings) in many amateur entries. Come on.

 3 things

1) Sometimes PB reveals what it truly is.
2) Sometimes companies like gopro reveal what they truly are
3) Sometimes, rules are for suckers.

Personally I don't think all this hate is needed. If you look at any other action sports industry, they have video contests all the time, ( Surfline-Wave of the Winter, Thrasher-Seek and Destroy) in which anyone can enter, but where pros always win... its about the best clip, not excluding the best riding and giving the prize away to the average joe. The contest's guidelines were essentially about the best clip... Is Sorge's run not exciting enough for you guys? The average joe obviously would be stoked on 20k, but likely has a job and that would be a nice bonus. Bike athletes need that 20k, just because you've won Rampage, does not mean you're rolling in dough! Well deserved Kurt! Keep sending it!
  • + 7
^ Personally I don't think you get what all this uproar is about.... No one cares that a pro won. We will see how they run their winter version of this contest but I bet they cannot f*ck up more than they did here. Since PB and the GoPro reps on here aren't providing any feedback or reasoning for this scam, I've posted this to GoPro's FB page. Hopefully someone there won't be a complete ass and will explain what's going on.
  • + 6
@simonsilver like you said "it's about the best clip". Did the best CLIP wn? In my opinion: no.
  • + 4
Hey guys, on the bright side, this is the first time in history all but one Pinkbike members have agreed on the same thing! I think this is the closest we will get to world peace. The one who disagreed is like Malta or the Vatican City... doesn't really count. Wink
  • + 3
GoPro, you have betrayed us for the last time!
  • + 1
Sawnoff666 posted this great comment below, however it maybe deserves I be up here, so copied and pasted here: go down and prop his comment not this one if you agree.

Here's an idea. Open the competition again. Let everyone vote like was supposed to happen. GoPro put up another $20,000 to save whatever is left of their integrity. Let the real winners win. Who's with me?
  • + 3
I love that idea actually. I saw a post on FB saying they're going to open the contest again shortly. If they do this, it will be worth entering again... maybe.
  • + 3
What would be better is if they upped the prize money to $30,000 and had every commenter on this article automatically win first place.
  • + 3
@scott-townes not sure how they could be trusted again after this farce... they just got full rights over hours of free advertisement footage and didn't even give back the promised prize to who really deserved it.
  • + 2
Pretty bad for Go-Pro I must say. I'm pro and it's very unfair.

In future, spread the money to the pros (as they get jack for risking everything for your marketing satisfaction in the first place)

And 2, start a new contest for only unsponsored riders. That's the point. To get creative with what you have and abide by the rules.

Thats a pretty simple strategy
  • + 4
 Yea fair point. Fuck GoPro.
  • + 70
Wait what? For those who don't know, the rules state anyone affiliated with GoPro were not allowed to enter. They also stated they couldn't have been posted before publicly in any capacity. Also they did state clips had to be 1-2 minutes long but after checking, that was removed from the rules list. What happened to the public voting period or that only the top winners from each month were moved "into the final round" of voting for the top prize? Where those removed as well? For how much money they put into this thing, they really made it a complete shit show and one of the most illegitimate contests ever run.

With that written, Sorge must be pumped his friends gave him 20k. The dude rips on a bike and him getting more money, regardless of where, is tight and he deserves more than that.

Great.
  • + 19
I'm guessing @karl-burkat is one of the people who decided to turn one of the sickest contests in a while into a complete sham. Way to go!
  • + 10
first time I've seen a moderator get so many neg props, PB and GoPro have really pissed off its users this time
@karl-burkat
my advice would be to man up, take a humble approach (which I know is hard for MTBers), learn from the mistakes made this time and not repeat them again next year.
  • + 49
 Fabio got robbed.
  • + 3
 ^THAT
  • + 4
Where is this Fabio you speak of?
  • + 6
Here's his entry: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl3u_5Zur1Q That said he is probably sponsored by GoPro, with being a member of the Drop and Roll Tour with Danny Mac and all.
  • + 3
Savage!! So creative and different. Thats what we wanted from this contest! Not more footage of professionals riding lines we'll never ride.
  • + 5
eoisaacs- Even if he was, it would be understandable if he won. That clip is beyond insane and he put more effort into this thing than anyone else because he actually created a risky line for this contest instead of just uploading old comp footy. I would still have the gripe about them supporting a sponsored rider if he is one but really, his entry is most true to the contest. It really is one the most impressive lines in a long time.
  • + 2
Fabio's entry was amazing! Def should have been top 3!
  • + 23
Hey Guys, I'm not really sponsored by GoPro. I just got one camera because I ride in the Drop and Roll Team. But I'm not sponsored by them, but thanks for your cool Feedback!
  • + 2
 Yep, Fabio got robbed!!!!!!!!!!
  • + 43
"raw and unedited" in the contest rules... 30 seconds of slow mo doesn't really seem right. I don't mind that he's a pro or anything, just hate slow mo.
  • + 5
 My thoughts exactly
  • + 14
The contest organizers used slo-mo after the clip had been submitted, however there were many clips included that violated other rules...... what a friggen joke.

  • + 20
So you're saying that GoPro broke their own rules to rig the competition. Seems fair.
  • + 4
its nothing to do with sorge that they put slow-mo in so he didnt break THAT rule
  • + 37
All the pros who won must be stoked they crushed a field of average joes, a real accomplishment.
  • + 7
You cant really hate or blame this on the pro riders for GoPro's bad contest. I do not agree with Sorge winning this but this is all a result of a bad contest by Go Pro and nothing by Sorge. The guy is an amazing rider. I feel bad for the average riders who risked it when in the end it was a pro rider who won.
  • + 33
The fact that VanDine is sponsored by GoPro and got second place in a contest sponsored by GoPro is pretty messed up, and blatantly violates the rules that have bene posted. I'm going to go ahead and say that the judging was also very biased towards Kelly and Aaron's buddies.

"1. ELIGIBILITY: the2014 GoPro of the World best line by Pinkbike (the “Contest”) is open to GoPro users worldwide that have an active email account and Internet access. Employees of GoPro, GoPro’s parent company, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion, fulfillment or other coordinating agencies, individuals providing services to GoPro through an outsourcer or temporary employment agency during the Contest Period, and their respective immediate family members and persons living in their same household, are not eligible to participate in the Contest. Participation in the Contest constitutes entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these Official Rules (“Official Rules”). VOID WHERE PROHIBITED OR RESTRICTED BY LAW."

seems pretty f*ckin shady to me.
  • + 9
Rémy Métailler won the 1k monthly prize and he's also sponsored by GoPro.... remymetailler.wix.com/promotional#!catwalks
  • + 2
Not sure if Sorge is sponsored by GoPro as well, there's nothing stating sponsorship anywhere other than a link to the GoPro website on Sorge's facebook bio, along with a load of other links to his sponsors....does that show sponsorship? www.facebook.com/kurtsorgefanpage
  • + 10
Gopro: the company that does a contest, forgets about the rules, so they can let their sponsored riders win. Good job.
  • + 34
One of my clips got denied entry because I "edited" it. All I did was trim the start and finish. How can the clip that won use slo-mo. Is it one rule for some and different rules for others? I'm calling shenanigans.
  • + 7
Gopro (the d*cks they are) added the slow-mo in after for some reason. . .
  • + 32
I dont follow this contest in all steps. But the result is bad. The vid of Fabio Wibmer is 10 times better than all of the podiums vids.
  • + 18
If I use a chesty I don´t usually dare to use words such as "Cinematography & Composition; Perspective & Difficulty Shooting; Beauty & Lighting"
  • + 13
This is a joke. Really? Yes, I know "The entries submitted, by Sorge, Van Dine etc were all submitted unedited (check out Sorge's from his page, www.pinkbike.com/video/386528 ). The slight edits made to the clips were made by GoPro on their end."
  • + 5
Hahaha - Reminds me of Ollie North pleading the fif.
  • + 15
3rd place is totally off.... there is no speed no air just tons of snow for such a short ride....Fabio was master piece and many others had some cooler bigger lines...then 3#
  • + 16
what happened to "unedited one to two minute"? #1 and #2 are both edited..
  • + 16
I would like to see PB respond to this. Bet they wont.
  • + 8
All of these concerns were brought up especially when one of GoPro's athletes won the 1k prize and you're correct, they have yet to address any concerns other than the pointless "we added the slo-mo after they submitted the clip... herp durp". I bet its because they can't justify the complete horseshit surrounding this.
  • + 11
The third vid is totally out of place. I've done numerous powder runs in my live, both faster and with air time. That guy just rolled down a powder coated slope and did nothing at all.
  • + 5
downvote all you like, you know it's true. my granny could have done that shot.
  • + 13
Where's your honor PB? You should be ashamed. Suck it.
  • + 1
 Tru Dat!!!
  • + 9
Why is GoPro doing such a contest anyway? They could give the money straight to Sorge without the damn movie.

Cinematography & Composition - 1st LOL
Perspective & Difficulty Shooting - 1st HAHA
Beauty & Lighting - 1st HAHAHAHA....NOT!

Performance & Style - 1st Yeah...maybe . other than that: What a joke for all the people spending time and effort in editing and filming. A slap in their face.
  • + 14
 thumbs down
  • + 8
This is ridiculous, i pretty much risked a stupid line, and then they give a gopro sponsored rider the prize? This is crap, give somebody who pays for they're own things the money, not one of your pro sponsored athletes
  • + 3
I agree with you 100% and GoPro should really know how you feel. You the average rider risked your ass to give them footage and they go with a sponsored pro.
  • + 8
Just want to chime in with everyone else calling b.s. on this "Contest." Congratulations, Go-Pro, you have just positioned yourself as the leading douchebag of the POV camera market.
  • + 10
Wasn't it supposed to be raw and unedited?
  • + 9
this is fucking terrible. Glad Sorge got to pocket some mad cash from some retarded corporate attempted advertising failure
  • + 7
Here's an idea. Open the competition again. Let everyone vote like was supposed to happen. GoPro put up another $20,000 to save whatever is left of their integrity. Let the real winners win. Who's with me?
  • + 11
 thats not fair
  • + 9
I guess I better take my GoPro out too next time I decide to ride through a snowy field.
  • + 5
But these folk that won their places and prizes I am afraid to say have the equipment on tap . The resources and bigger support than the average folks. Its clearly not just a competition for all the enter if the pro's are winning ! Let someone else in. I am not being a party pooper , just think its fair game and should be open to all
  • + 10
 Really?!
  • + 5
Da fuq? I remember looking forward to seeing the results of this competition - 20k available to average jo "going pro" should have (will have) produced some awesome unedited runs at spots we have never seen before. Instead, we get 30 seconds of riding in the snow doing bugger all and two 1 minute clips with a couple of big back flips.
  • + 6
A genuine opportunity for Pinkbike and Go-Pro to support an up and coming filmmaker or rider has been wasted, which is a real shame.
  • + 4
They really should have done a separate contest for the Pro's vs Joe's. Pro riders have way more skill. Don't get me wrong Sorge is amazing but this contest would have been better suited to feature the amateur rider. Very disappointing in you GoPro. No public voting. I was very happy to see one of my local guys Matt Kurle win the first slot though riding at Duthie hill -Semper Dirticus.
  • + 4
I was going to post talking shit but it seems the 100s of posts above me beat me to it. After I saw the first monthly winners I decided not to risk my life and waste my time when the true intentions of the contest were revealed. I was actually going to buy a new Hero4 until I saw the first months selections. Truly, joke of a contest.
  • + 2
oh and I forgot to add....they didn't even pick the real winner. Fabio guy got robbed... 3rd place is just a slap in the face to him even more.
  • + 7
Haha fuck you pinkbike bunch of fucking wanks
  • + 3
I really enjoyed watching the entries for this contest, i spent hours watching all the different lines from all over the world. Some really unique and original stuff from all over. As impressive as those big jumps are, its really a shame to see this contest end this way. Even before i scrolled to the comment section i thought to myself " well that wasn't what i was expecting to see at all..."
  • + 2
Hmm- If Sorge didn't have Lacondeguy in front of him, would he have won? Any vid with Lacondeguy in it slashes the odds of winning the contest massively... Fact. He's a legend with stupid amounts of steeze! Sorge'd better spilt his winnings with him to say thanks.
  • + 2
Yeah f@ck GoPro. This was a sham, breaking their own terms and conditions. To be expected from a company that went public about a year ago and now is more concerned with shareholders than customers. "We can't continue to give away free product everyday, it amounts to over a third of a million dollars in lost revenue every year." Thanks for joining the capitalist scum that makes me so ashamed to be an American.
  • + 2
The thing is that the only ones who gave away free stuff here are the contest entrants. I guess the part of the rules which states you are giving away almost every right over your own footage won't be broken and will be followed to the letter.
  • + 1
Yeah, I was making reference to the end of their daily give away contest "of everything we make" that they did for several years.
  • + 2
Very disappointing how this turned out. Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. I'm surprised GoPro would pull a stunt like this to it's own clientele. It's not a smart business practice but what do I know. I suppose customers can always boycott the brand to ensure that their voices are heard.
  • + 2
This contest should be for the average rider not a pro, they get enough support as it is, the money could have help an up and coming racer. Races, parts, kit and bikes are getting more and more expensive and the money they could of won could of helped to fund that!
  • + 2
Was at the shooting range in Vegas years ago. The execs from GoPro were beside us, shooting their cameras with machine guns. Would say they blew up about 10 GoPro's before calling it a day. I've decided to go with Contour since the db's declined to give drunk me a free GoPro that day.
  • + 7
There are valid gripes in this thread. This is not one of them,
  • + 1
 Thank you, officer.
  • + 3
Friends and I were totally going to enter. After seeing pros enter, we decided it was a waste of time and efforts. Glad to see our assumptions were right... You've lost your way PB and GoPro...
  • + 2
It's simple. The judging criteria was whichever video looked best visually and made GoPros look like cinematic cameras (even though they sometimes look horrible). This contest had nothing to do with skill, riding ability, perspective, or any of the other so-called "judging criteria". The video I submitted didn't look great visually (similar to many of the other non-pro videos) so anyone who either had an old camera or a lack of stunning scenery didn't stand a snowflakes chance in hell.

That being said, the best video indeed won, but I don't see how Gopro paying their already sponsored professional riders $20,000 is supposed to promote their business.

"Gopro: Be a hero"*

*Professional riders on a closed course. *Does not actually mean that you will be a hero or that your helmet footage will be any good. *Video edited by professional cinematographers. *Results may vary. *Only $499.
  • + 2
I know a majority of people have already commented on this but I cant resist...Isn't it interesting how most of the time some kind of video/photo contest appears the winner usually is the professional...with background, skills, and good equipment. I'm not saying it happens all the time...just most of the time.
  • + 2
Rad lines and rad guys but these dudes are just doing their every day thing... They didnt put any thought into these videos like gopro originally talked about poeple doing.. WTF?? Someone just got 20K just for wearing a go pro, thats it...

I saw videos that people actually put creative thought and energy into, and then did rad impressive shit on their bike. Where are those videos??? I cant even read the comments this shit pisses me off so much...

Oh well congrats to Chris, there is no doubt hes a pimp. But I really did think this gopro contest was about the no namers getting creative with the little cameras they PAID FOR WITH THEIR OWN MOMNEY. f*ck was I wrong....
  • + 2
the worst part of it was that the clip that made it into 3rd, HAD THAT DAMN helmet rattle sound. the worst thing about a gopro run is when you forget to put in that little white cushion into the mount to try and reduce some of the knocks. even when you remember it to put it in, there still is some knocking noise on your raw footage. kinda odd & self-incriminating to have that rattle sound exist in the 3rd place spot.
  • + 4
fabio wibmer won !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in all our hearts
  • + 1
Should have been called the "Pro Go Pro" contest. Way to take the fun out of trying to get some good footage and maybe win a contest with it. No fault to the pros, but I'd rather see what the average biker Joe can come up with. I'm willing to bet there was a lot of sick footage that was just overlooked, and if not then let us have access to a page with all of the submissions so we can see for ourselves. Pinkbike should hold a "NoPro" contest and let users submit POV footage from any devise, then let us vote on it. Maybe even give out a prize. WHATDOYATHINK?
  • + 3
I have nothing new to add that hasn't been eloquently posted already except to say that you can vote with your feet. DONT BUY GO PRO!
  • + 4
I've never seen a post on Pinkbike with so many disappointing comments!! Good work Pinkbike and GoPro
  • + 4
You deserved the win. As simple as that. And while I think it's cool that Sorge's buddies support him financially (probably things aren't going so well for him, who knows) I would have considered it to be far more honest and upright if GoPro would just have given the money straight to Sorge without pulling off an internet scam ...
  • + 4
What a joke! Not much more to say since it has already been stated above, but wtf? At least give a response PB.
  • + 4
THIS IS ABSOLUTE BULLSH*T. Don't get me wrong, great riding by Sorge (as always) but this entire contest is a joke.
  • + 1
You know something is up when the same party line is given by PB in response repeated criticism of the way this was run. Aside from some questionable aspects of the competition, the footage to me at least is still astonishing. The real winner is Go Pro. KER-CHING!!
  • + 4
Agree with the other comments - this contest was dodgy and the result is very disappointing and unfair.
  • + 3
Its hell of a shame that ordinary people don't get to win it big and the pro's or it seems , DO.
  • + 3
ssshhhhhh everyone. if you listen carefully, you can hear people on hecklers rock. as "YOU F**KED UP" chants float in!
  • + 4
thats it! I'm buying a Sony Action cam now...
  • + 5
 Whack contest
  • + 3
let your wallets do the talking (and voting) PB users!! Contour and the action cam are both amazing
  • + 5
 Soooooooo whack.....
  • + 4
well, I must say. Was hoping for some names many haven't heatd of.
  • + 4
Doubt Sorge even will see that $20k....f*ck gopro
  • + 5
You know what… I have to agree with that.
I won a contest on here a few years back for a Whistler season pass and a heap of Dakine gear. Once I was announced as the winner, I was never contacted from anyone/brand relating to the contest. Ended up going to Whistler a couple of years later and it was a total piss-mare to organise and pick up my pass and gear!
  • + 3
What a bunch of bullshit. Definitely gonna look at Sony this year.
  • + 4
That little screen you wear on your wrist to see the camera footage is pretty slick. Personaly though I'm thinking about getting this:

www.amazon.com/RioRand-Recorder-Waterproof-Motorbike-Camcorder/dp/B00ISUNBPU

For $65 I'll take the small drop in video quality.
