Gee - maybe he is not the most likeable dude but damn, he was probably so fired up because of not catching the world cups train, that he smashed it with only his power of will. I have to say i thought his career was quite over. Now i wouldn't be surprised if he manages to get some podium results in no time. I think that everyone will agree that he is capable of doing it.

Pierron, Bruni, Vergier, Nicole, Cabirou, Ravanel, etc etc... we have so many talented riders in France... and of course: the whole press will not write a word about their performances, the tv will not show any image, preferring covering that stupid and souless Tour de France DE MERDE!!!... Le Tour de France which is, BTW, the second most polluting sport event after formula 1. I don`t know how it is in other countries, but why our favourite sport is so much underrated and ignored by the main press?!! Mass population wants spectacular images and emotions: DH and enduro can provide this. It might be time to render properly what those amazing sports can offer in term of EMOTIONS. That`s said.

What a race. So stoked for Amaury, Loic, Thibault, Rachel and Vali. Feel a little bummed for Greg, Brook and Finn tough. Every race should be like this. Right now DH it is the best live action sport. We should have more cameras on track, Cathro on Redbull and 12 races a season! I guess that would be a winner and bring MTB on top of the game

Why are the elite women so much slower than the elite men? I can understand 10 secs maybe but 40 secs in this day and age, modern bikes etc.
  • 6 0
Because contrary to what modern culture want you to believe, there is a big physiological difference between men and women. Modern bikes might be good but MSA is brutal and the women just simply can't hang on to the bike and muscle it around enough to pull out times that close to the men. The top women are fast for sure, I remember being in a DH practice session and Tracey Moseley dropped me like I was standing still, but the top elite men are another step above.

@gibbon-on-an-orange: I see some mega strong women in the gym who lift more than a lots of guys. Lets remember the guys will also vary in strength and endurance due to genitics and training. In this day and age and with super hi tech bikes i still see it as too bigger gap. 40 secs to a minute is typically the gap between the two categories. My opinion is this is more down the lack of competitors in the womens category than their actual strength and endurance.
  • 9 0
At no point did I say that no woman was stronger than any man. On the contrary, I highlighted that I got destroyed by a woman, but it's just simple biology that if you took an average man and an average woman and implemented equal training, the man's physical difference would give them the upper hand in such a physical activity.
In athletics, endurance events are separated by roughly 10% between the top men and top women. In the strength events that can be as much as 20%. If we average that out, assuming DH to be a mix of strength and endurance, that's about 15%, which is what the gap between Bruno and Atherton was. It's just basic biological makeup.
  • 3 4
@gibbon-on-an-orange: I understand what you are saying but lets not forgot they use a very high tech machine to travel downhill on. I have seen some very small guys absolutely fly down a downhill track quicker than the bigger stronger guys. A lot of it is down pure skill and technical ability. I used to race 4x and watched Katy Curd move into senior men as she had zero competition in the womens. She beats loads of men too. I still think if there was significantly more competition in the Elite womens category then times would definitely reduce.
  • 7 0
@Matt76: They all travel downhill on equally high tech machines. It’s a fairly even playing field. Physical strength, endurance and coordination are the relevant factors. Someone lacking strength or fitness may be able to make up for it with better coordination and technique, but generally though, men have the advantage in all of those areas. It makes all the difference.
  • 1 4
@cyclo-maniac: I accept that the laws of nature women have less strength then men but they can certainly make up for it. Bare in mind that women can now serve on frontline and are expected to go through exactly the same training as men. Also Jamie Chadwick became the first female driver to win a Formula 3 race recently, bare in mind these cars do not have power steering unlike F1 cars. I still standby what i say with increase competition womens times would tumble.
