Dave Watson - tour gap - an icon for an eternity thanks to one huck!

[not intended to downplay the other major contributions he made as a pioneer of the sport!]

gotta be top five greatest freeride moments....

Absolutely - wish they'd sell that as a poster.

One of the moments that motivated me to pursue that style riding. That and Simmons monster truck gap.

Great guy and rider! Had the chance to ride with him in north shore in 2004! Greetings from Barcelona Dave!!

great guy. bought my first DH bike from him..one of his Kona Stabs he used for one week for coaching in whistler. Super helpful and gave me Sombrio riding gear when he heard I was just starting. One rim was slightly bent on the bike during the prepurchase check over so he tossed me 2 new spank rims. was nice enough to text with me about setup and whatnot after the sale as well.. Thanks so much Dave...made getting into DH so much easier with your help

 that was cheesy

Ya, analyzing biking that much is so not freeride

I think it probably has something to do with the sponsor of the piece. Gillete is a huge commercial brand trying to appeal to the masses. With that comes the over analysis and the "cheese". Like it or not, it's more exposure for the sport. This might be someone's first exposure to the sport we know and love. This might be the first day of a new passion for someone. Hard to hate on that.

that cheese was Herritage and was cured over time. My hats off to Mister Watson for inspiring a whole new flock of dirtbags killing those trails. Sweet love of 2 wheels.

Don't want to sound way off base.... but I've never heard of "professional mountain biker" Cory Derpak.....

Didn't look like he was sponsored by Gillette.
  • 1 3

The power of instagram any girl is a "professional model" every bro is a "professional athlete."

What bike is he riding though?
  • 2 0
hasn't touched a bike in ten years.. gets back on one after building a bike park and still considers himself a pro. rad..

 Intense 951?
  • 2 0
yeah it's an intense. He's a professional snowmobiler or motoskier or something idek. he built a bike park by my house and its pretty shitty after like a couple months. hasn't paid a bunch of people.

DaKine? Shouldn't Dave be wearing Sombrio gear? I thought he was staying on even after the Sugoi acquisition?
  • 2 0
That that was odd too. Must've changed.

I liked how they explained freeriding, racing is awesome but its just not everybodys cup of tea.

Well that brings back some memories. i remember watching him in the old North Shore Extreme videos back in the day. my friends and i would riding around the North Shore to check out the from the videos.

anyone know what bike hes riding?
  • 3 0
 Looks like a Nukeproof Pulse.
  • 2 0
yup i think you're right. its really annoying how shitty the video quality is. it says 1080 but is look like its way lower for some reason. its like a lot of redbulls videos. its almost 2016, we have 4k. anything under 1080 shouldn't be acceptable from large companies.... shit shoulda started with, "you know what really grinds my gears"

lol thnx mang!

There was a thing a while back, he was named as a "brand ambassador" for NOOKPROOF

Weird seeing Watson showcasing freeriding by riding down Jump Line Exit of RH after seeing him hucking the TDF. I guess it was easy access for filming.

 He could've hit Brutus instead

dave watson is still so fluid on a bike one of my biggest influences. anybody know what shoes he was using they looked ideal for dh'ing
  • 2 0
 those stunts and maneuvers though!!
  • 1 3
So what's the definition of freeride? Does it require a least amount of travel, mountAin size, jumps,...?
Are we talking about birth of judging said type of riding?
Because riding up and down hills without trails, and then creating single track and then scoring/racing them started in the 70's, and there's video to back this up.
You'd need to talk to someone from California who is in there late 70's now or almost 80.

derp. That was all I thought about as soon as dudes name came up on the screen.
  • 2 2
what are these "keepads" at 4'10 ???
  • 2 0
They're knee braces, not pads. Looks like he's fked himself up at some point to need them on both legs.
  • 3 0
i wondered the same thing. it seems odd that if you had wrecked both your knees you would run knee pads that don't actually protect your knees...
  • 1 0
That's what I was wondering. Don't they have knee braces that double as pads now?
