Agreed. Press fit BBs are a literal deal breaker for me and many others. Do you hear that bike industry??? You could make an otherwise absolutely perfect bike at a great price and I will have zero interest in it for the single reason that it has a press fit BB.

Why do they do it?
Is it cheaper?
The only reason I'd buy one is because you can get really dope 2nd hand cranks for peanuts
because no one wants SH*TFIT BB.

@Thema: They do it because it's cheaper, allows for a wider (stiffer) BB, and because of all the warranties they get for cross threaded BBs.

Seems like a dope bike, good build kits on both models and good numbers too, slack head tube, low bb, short stays, short fork. Seeing as it's Ghost, should be a good price, too!

@landscapeben: considering the Auron is a kickass fork and is a few hundred bucks cheaper.... no I'd stick with the Auron, regardless of what's in the video.

@bkm303: Never ridden it so I couldn't comment, but over this side of the pond a certain stigma surrounds Suntours as they have for the longest time been the cheapest nastiest suspension on the cheapest nastiest bikes available, usually bought from Halfords... It's only very recently that I've started hearing good things about them, whereas the pedigree that Rockshox carries would have me spending the extra... but I'm not fussed if that's just me, I'm not out to prove a point I just thought the disparity was odd.

@landscapeben: the reputation is/was similar here, but I started hearing good things about them back in 2012 or so. They've been building momentum, and they have some WC DH, WC XC, and Rampage podiums too, on the Rux and Axon.

Sure, they make most of their money building clunky/commuter OEM stuff, but judging Suntour based on that is like judging RS based on the XC28, and 30 silver. For bikes around $1k I actually recommend those OEM suntours, as you get more value for the money than you would with RS. I've ridden the XCR-Air and it's a totally trail-worthy budget fork - smooth & super reliable, with decent adjustability. Obviously weight and damping aren't the best, but it's a low price point. Their mid/high end stuff is very competitive.

Ghost's 'new' Asket hardtail looks a lot like the 2017 model, and the geometry is identical. Is it the same frame or is it all in the detail (e.g tyre clearance)?

I had a ghost 2 years ago, great bike... but I snapped the frame (it was a lower model one that I took on double black dh trails) and they replaced it. But I sold it since I needed a larger frame (I'm 14)

For hardtails I'd prefer steel or titanium. I can understand people want aluminium for 4x racing, or because it can make for a lightweight frame, or simply because it is relatively cheap. Still interested in bamboo for a hardtail frame.

Pretty sure it used to be carbon only, I was looking at buying one a few years ago but it was a little out of my price range. I don't think most people are really looking to spend carbon money on aggressive hardtails, although there are exceptions (Kona, Canfield).

Completely disagree on frame materials. Aluminum HT was my only bike for 3 years and it was fine, and I've ridden steel and Ti as well. It you run high volume tires, low pressures, and a decent handlebar I honestly don't think frame material makes a difference aside from aesthetics (I do love skinny tubes).

@funkzander: i stand corrected. Ti is fly. Aluminum is cheap, but the price still seems higher than it should be. The ride quality on aluminum hardtails is no good; Speaking only from experience. I wanna get back on steel personally. I keep hearing great things about kona and Canfields carbon HTs too. No experience on those.

@speed10: Olsen will tailor the carbon/aramid layup to your preferences. Either go for super lightweight (and a Pinion gearbox to get the weight back up to normal) or have some extra layers and he'll offer you a crash replacement if you manage to wreck that one.

@speed10: sometimes i think the whole discussion about frame materials is pure esoterical. you can make harsh feeling alu frames or more forgiving ones. mass produced steel frames lost their springy/zippy feeling which they were loved for in the old days but now they are overbuilt because of the cen regulations of today. i think choice of tires or pressure make a greater difference than frame material?

@funkzander: yes, the road bike world has realized this already, actually. The high end aluminum frames from Cannondale and Giant (just as an example) have beautiful ride quality, as good or better than cheap carbon/steel without a doubt. If you check out a lot of the budget road bike reviews a lot of the reviewers will recommend Al or carbon at the low price range. Plus it usually saves you some money.

What ppl don't often account for in these discussions is that not all steel/carbon/aluminum is equal. There's plenty of awful steel out there - there's a big difference between double butted columbus tubing and cheap hi-tensile tubing. Then the design itself can have a lot of impacts on feel on top of that - bends, gussets, ovalizing/flattening, etc.
