He's the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be at bar spins - but how does Ryan Nyquist actually do them!? The man himself tells you his tricks and tips for getting the bars all the way around.
Can we have two Presidents of MTB Land? cuz Tippie for Prez, classic...but Nyquist too. Petitionforchange. (and never ever let go of the bike...what are guys, nuts? heehee)
What a likable guy. Perfectly explained AND funny, too. More of this please. He could teach other riders how to be an approachable, relaxed guy, how to have fun and not take things too serious.
most people can do it either way, but i can speak personally when saying that "bussing" is wayyyyy easier and safer feeling, especially during combo tricks. And its a proper barspin either way...
@TheDownhillDude: But when "bussing" you dont get that great feeling of a good catch. Sure, the bars are spun but I would say they are different tricks as in tuck-nohanders and suicides both are no handers sort of way.
for historical reference here; my teenage riding buddy jeremy alder doing the first ever recorded full bar spin air. (and yes he was sponsored by haro as well) the goods start at 2:55. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rp8qnyHabI
I would suggest backing your rear wheel into something solid you can then lean back and easily practice the spin until you have it figured out. Great vid from a legend i was hoping to see some old school triples maybe next time.
Do you see how he has his foot under a pedal. Same thing I think, he does suggest the leaning on a chainlink fence in some mega old bmx how to video however...
What actual width ar Nyquists bars? I cut mine down to 700mm recently with the intention of learning barspins, but Im wondering if I should go narrower.
Dunno...but older school ProTaper DH bars were 660-80??? I went straight from that to a 785 on the DH bike...great for DH, don't like 785 so much on the Trance...too much torque, can almost reef the front end right out from under ya
Most BMX bars nowadays come at a width of 28 to 30 inches which the millimeter conversion would be about 710 mm to 760 mm. Given that Nyquist is an old school rider, I have a feeling he might be at the narrower end of that spectrum.
I bought a bike off a midget who cut them down to 610 and I still couldn't x-up let alone barspin. I can x-up a bmx with wide (for bmx) bars. I think head tube angle and weight make a big difference.
Slopestyle may be fun to watch but how many of us actually aspire to do these things? I know I don't. Whips, x-ups and tabletops for me. I like to stay attached to my bike and don't want to modify it to do a few tricks.
Yeah because it will stop the rotation of the front wheel, centrifugal force might not be a huge factor if you’re pinching the seat. I do know that on mx if you speed up the revs of the back wheel in the air then it’ll push the rear end up and vice versa for slowing it down I.e. hitting the brake. So I could see how a spinning wheel matched with spinning bars could create an issue. I’m just now learning 360’s I haven’t even tried a bar other than standing over my bike and doing it when getting a beer.

I blame moral degeneration among the youthful bigwheelers with whole bikes wheighing less than a stripped S&M Sabbath frame..
Fact.
