Introducing Pinkbike's Annual Community Survey - Your Chance to Be Heard

Jul 8, 2021 at 8:58
by Pinkbike Staff

We enjoyed getting nerdy with the State of the Sport Survey earlier this year, so we wanted to change the focus from pro athletes to take a look at more typical mountain bikers' preferences too.

This is your opportunity to let the industry know what your priorities are. Do you think that product managers always spec the wrong bars? Ruin a good bike with bad graphics? What's your number one priority when you're in the market for a new helmet? This community is a vocal crew, but you can bet that any brands worth their salt spend a fair amount of time reading the comments to determine whether their "big idea" is likely to be a success or fall flat on its face. Tell the industry what your priorities are by completing this 15 minute survey.

Like the State of the Sport Survey, we will be making the results public to everyone once it's complete so you can see whether you're an outlier or the new standard. Does everyone really want mixed-wheel bikes? Expect the data analysis articles in September, since you'll have until August 30, 2021 to complete the survey. And we'll do it again next year to see what's changed year over year.

Complete the survey for a chance to win one of twenty $250 Pinkbike Shop gift cards.

The survey is anonymous and we won't be associating any of the information with your Pinkbike account or sharing your email with brands. You only need to provide your email if you want to be entered in the draw to win a prize.

"What brand of X do you plan on purchasing next?"

Need option: Irrelevant / Don't give a shit
  • 33 0
Exactly, so many of those I either choose the same product or just something I thought was interesting. Those options just skew the data.
  • 80 0
I was having the same thought. Even just having an "undecided" option would have worked. The way I had to answer made it look like I have some type of brand loyalty when that isn't really true.

Also the clothing options were missing some type of options for "Whatever is on sale".
  • 37 0
We need the option: whatever is in stock
  • 20 0
Yeah, a load of those questions could have used a "hopefully never buy one again" option
  • 12 0
I just clicked other and put undecided.
  • 11 0
Exactly. I do a lot of research and then Demo bikes before I buy, then ride it until it dies. So how the hell can I tell you what I am buying when my current rig dies? Especially since a new Mt. Bike is a major purchase.

As for what components on my next bike? Well, what comes with the bike I'm buying?

Helmets I have to try on. Clothes the same.
  • 32 11
You can just leave any question blank that you don’t have an answer for it or select Other or Undecided
  • 28 1
@sarahmoore: I believe I tried that and it forced me to pick a brand on the "what would you choose next" questions.
  • 13 0
 @sarahmoore: I couldn't.
  • 10 0
@sarahmoore: doesn't seem true, they are marked as required.
  • 3 0
My answers to the best of my recollection:
Other, Other, Not sure, I don't use "X", Other, Shimano, Other, Box, I build my own, Not sure, Nike?, Other, Other, Vittoria, What's that?, Other, Prefer not to answer, email.

(other: whatever's on sale when I need it)
  • 24 1
@saberworks: I was wrong, I was viewing it in test mode. You will have to answer all the required questions before moving on, but we did add Other / Undecided / I don’t know to all questions so that can always be an option!
  • 15 1
I want the cheapest one that qualifies me for free shipping please.
  • 3 0
Or simply I don't know I haven't considered that yet.
  • 1 0
 "im poor cant afford stuff"
  • 6 0
@sarahmoore: also, maybe NF one day will be considered mountain bike clothes and make it as an option in the survey Smile
  • 2 0
@WillStax: Ride until it dies. My ethos too.
  • 5 0
Way too long, too many options I didn't get to the end.
  • 1 0
Whatever in stock and needed, brand wise agnostics
  • 3 4
@sarahmoore: even easier for those who realize that this isn’t going to actually make a difference for you personally: don’t bother filling out the survey. After 5 pages of what is on my bike and what will I buy next I decided to do something more productive...like watch paint dry.
  • 4 5
@unrooted: nobody's forcing to take the survey... probably took you longer to come to the comments and bitch about it...
  • 5 0
@stiingya: no, i took it for the reason ‘voice to be heard’ and honestly after it feels unprofessional
  • 3 1
 @nickmalysh:
Maybe you can direct me to some, "professional surveys" so I can see what I'm missing. Must be amazing!

I take the survey because I know "in a way", it helps pay for the free content on this site. (and I need my Friday Fails!) But they're also going to share the results with us and some of it will be interesting.

No, I don't really care what brand of sunglasses people choose to buy next year. And obviously they didn't have exactly the right choice in the drop down for me to answer all of the questions.

But I just chose"other" and typed in whatever I wanted. BANG, my voice was heard... Smile
  • 70 2
Finally my chance to tell the world I earn no money from biking, just like the pros!
  • 8 11
Yeah, but they make a personal choice to ride a bike for a living, have access to the latest kit, travel the world. Thry are welcome to go get an office job like the rest of us and pay rrp for bikes.
  • 13 16
@drjonnywonderboy: They also put their life on the line day in and day out making endless sacrifices to promote and sell those bikes that you're buying... Just because you've settled for a lifeless office job doesn't mean that other professionals who choose a different path don't deserve a fair wage for their work.
  • 18 3
Finally my chance to see a childish unrelated argument develop right under the first comment on a Pinkbike article! Waaaaaaait.... that's every article.
  • 8 0
I work in a bike shop part time and they let us charge hours when we do our "Tuesday Night Rides", so I tell everyone I'm basically a professional cause I get paid to ride my bike lol.
  • 9 0
@brookscurran: As someone who has made large life decisions based on passion for biking as I bet you have, I still think you also need to acknowledge the privilege of being able to do such things. I was able to build my life around bikes because I had the structure to do so growing up. Not everyone has that ability, and for many a "lifeless" office job is their means for survival. By all means I am pro bumming (for lack of a better word) as I do it myself but we shouldn't knock the other side, just like the passion driven bum should not be mocked by people who took the corporate route.
  • 3 0
@zanda23: Couldn't agree more it truly is an incredible opportunity to make a life surrounded by bikes, lifeless was a poor choice in wording... the passion got the best of me on that. Thank you.
  • 53 0
Cat really see how this was giving people a voice, rather having just completed it it's clear this is just a massive data grab to flog to companies.
No real pressing questions:
- nothing about plastic packaging in products which is ridiculous
- nothing about what we'd like to see companies doing more of / less of
- nothing about what we value from brands interns of investment in racing, or putting out video content for example

Pretty disappointing really considering this was posed along the same lines as the state of the sport survey which I thought was great and gave a really good insight. I get that PB has to make money to provide the content it does (old adage of if you're not paying for it, you are the product) but this is still a bit of a missed opportunity.
  • 5 0
Well said and I completely agree. It’s too bad the entire thing is based around buying things and brand loyalty. Frown
  • 2 0
Yeah i don’t feel “heard” at all, but now some 12 year old in russia knows what brand of toilet paper i use. Not only would i rather answer those questions, but i think they could help brands more, as well. If i was a brand i would much rather hear that 20% of the PB community wants more tire clearance and longer steerers, than hearing that 20% wears troy lee helmets and don’t plan on switching.
  • 54 2
HOW DARE FACBOOK COLLECT MY PERSONAL DATA oh a survey, hold on I'll be right back.
  • 12 2
This must be the biggest cash cow for PB
  • 49 10
I only ride Trail/XC/Downcountry and Road, but I took the time to rank all the others just so I could put e-bike/moped absolutely last.
  • 3 1
Wait... is 1 or 13 last? I'm so confused.
  • 6 1
No even worse is E-FAT BIKES. The worst of mtb combined. Your e biking is excused if you are a senior citizen though.
  • 8 6
@Marquis I only ride enduro/dh/park and beach cruisers, but I took the time to rank all the others just so I could put e-bike second and all your pedally spandex favorites absolutely last.
  • 2 0
And how can I decide what I like more, a loam session with buddies, bike park with natural stuff or an autumn gravel ride just to enjoy nice company and see colorful forest?
And what's the difference between trail and enduro anyway?
And if I'm joining a road group on my gravel bike, how does it count?
  • 2 0
@bikedrd: i’m still confused with that question. I read it as larger number=better, even though that seems counter-intuitive.
  • 31 0
To echo others, extremely disappointing survey. Was excited to see an opportunity for readers to chime on content they like, races and event coverage they enjoy, and similar aspects towards pinkbike, not a survey very clearly intended to market the results to ad agencies on how likely your readers are to buy people's products. I understand the need for you to survive on ad revenue, but if you post surveys like this, don't frame it as a sister to the State of Sport survey. Much more like like the State of User's Wallet survey.
  • 29 0
It took 10 minutes on my first try. Then the next 5 times I was able to finally complete the survey in 3:56. The trick is to just select the option closest to where your mouse is hovering.
  • 31 0
Better be only 15min....the Boss gets mad if I PB too much in a day.
  • 3 0
 Spoiler.....there's an eBike question....Smile
  • 26 1
Should have had the weight and height in metric units also (it's what most of the world uses btw)
  • 7 0
I have no idea about my weight in pounds so I guessed 200, so did I guess I'm overweight or not??
  • 1 0
@DC1988: probably overweight not that 200 is that big but unless youre like 6’2”
  • 8 4
@DC1988: Good point! How rude of them not to include "stone" as a unit of mass.
  • 2 0
 @barp:
Kg's all the way for me, I think it's time we embrace the future
  • 3 0
@DC1988: Nah, I actually agree with you; was only joking. Apparently most people missed the joke.
  • 18 0
Maybe some of us are content with what we run and don't need to be always looking to buy the next component or bike or piece of gear. Without that option to pick, I'm out.
  • 5 4
You can select Other for most questions, or undecided
  • 5 0
@sarahmoore: I really don't remember seeing undecided anywhere, just other and then having to type "One that looks nice. And not too expensive."
  • 7 0
@Bob-Agg: lol same. like who the frick knows what they will buy next. Better would be to ask what are you currently running and then ask how satisfied are you with it. It would probably paint a better picture of which brands products people like and which products they dont like. But well this is world of consumerism, where buy buy buy is the mantra.
  • 2 0
@sarahmoore: What @Bob-Agg said; never saw an "undecided" option, ended up going for "Other" then putting undecided in the text entry
  • 3 0
Most of my answers were the same as what I own now. I've figured out what I like for a lot of stuff, unless something really interesting comes on the market in sticking with what I know works.
  • 18 0
Enjoy that bike pubes build i just submitted.
  • 1 0
LOL. Yes e.g. a lauf fork on a DH build with 2 drop handlebars
  • 1 0
RIP bicyclepubes. Come back we need you
  • 2 0
@short-but-sweet: perfect for the road helmet and neck brace outfit i put in.
  • 15 0
Have fun with my answers, NERDS.......
  • 9 0
This is stuff that gets debated in graduate study that includes survey design, so there's no one right answer here, but FWIW all the questions about the future are missing an "I don't know yet" kind of answer. I've been told that this is a good idea, because 'I don't know' can be too easy for your survey respondents and therefore draw their attention away from the other possible answers (in addition to making the final numbers less interesting), but I still wrote 'I don't know' into just about every 'other' box in the survey. I'm not brand loyal, and I don't know what technologies will be hip on a 3-5 year horizon, and I don't know what helmet or gloves will be on sale a year from now (or whatever unknown month my current gloves tear a seam) either. It all depends on what you really want to know, the research questions hidden behind the survey questions.
  • 4 0
Yeah, the surveys/polls from PB in general seem to be extremely poorly thought-out. Please do better, PB. I want to help out by clicking some buttons, but I don't want it to be a frustrating experience.
  • 3 0
@barp: I like the poll where they only give US riding spots as your next holiday destination.
  • 10 0
Whilst everybody is picking Other as their answer, I'm sat here registering trademarks and setting up a new brand named, you've guessed it, Other. This time next year, I'll be a millionaire!
  • 12 0
It’s all made up, and the points don’t matter.
  • 10 1
I feel so heard now that I've spent 15 minutes giving marketers all my info.
  • 1 0
The poor quality and tediousness of this survey makes me wonder how many people just picked random answers to get a gift card
  • 8 1
yo ok so I bought 2 shirts from PB and they shrank like hardcore, more so than all my other shirts. Can't even wear them now so I gave them to my dog
  • 5 1
I have that same problem with shrinking shirts (pants, too). Happens across all brands though. I'm pretty sure it's a conspiracy.
  • 2 1
 @noapathy: lol very cute
  • 2 0
 Pictures please
  • 3 0
Of the dog wearing pinkbike shirts, not evidence of shrinking
  • 5 0
Stupid survey. 90% of this stuff I could care less about. With minor exceptions I will ride my new bikes stock and replace when something breaks. At that point I will look at a combination of quality and price. Same for all th clothing and other gear. You make some big leaps thinking that folks care that much about some stuff. I ride IXS knee pads because when I needed new ones I went a local shop and they had 3or 4 brands they carried. Can’t even remember the others brands tried all 4 on and the iXs fit best so done!
  • 6 0
For the "What brand of shock are you using on your current primary mountain bike?" question, there is no option for the hardtail riders among us.
  • 4 0
I wish I would have had the option to select multiple brands for consideration in a next purchase. Most of those decisions are not finalized and I only have a preference for a selection of brands. That was not an option in the survey though. I guess an undecided box would have also sufficed but that is not as information as a selection of brands.
  • 3 0
Would be nice if there was a rapid click option for future plans to either get the same gear or no plan rather than having to redundantly scroll down to the same thing or scroll to other and write that you don't care or don't plan on getting it again. For things like clothes or gloves it is probably rare that people just ride in one type of clothes so maybe having multiple picking options.
  • 3 0
I get that downcountry is a type of bike (sorta) and I actually think the name is kinda funny. However, I completely reject the concept that it’s a distinct type of riding. Enduro is barely it’s own distinct type of riding.
  • 3 0
Theres no Sunrace in the aftermarket drivetrain, but its in what i would buy next. Also I never really look at what brand, just the merits of the product before i buy something.
  • 3 0
There was no propain for the next bike either.
  • 6 0
We’ll add Sunrace and Propain in, thanks!
  • 1 0
@mitochris: probably because they’re a bit of a myth at the moment on account of all the delays.
  • 1 0
Hmm...Sunrace's market research budget appears to be in question
  • 1 0
@sarahmoore: There was also no title components or helfare apparel. Helfare is a small brand though so it makes sense to not include it; but title is quite large. Love the podcast!
  • 6 0
“Your chance to be heard” aka free market research for us…
  • 7 6
This isn't so much a survey of opinions as it is an attempt to sell data for marketing to brands. "Oh look, lots of people said they want to buy your product, so advertise with us!" Or "Hey, lots of people want to buy your product, so continue advertising with us."

I lost interest after a few minutes.
  • 3 0
You know what piece of gear I can't find and need? Latex gloves that aren't super overpriced to wear when I'm working on my bike!
  • 1 0
Got a Harbor Freight in your city? Their nitrile gloves are pretty reasonably priced when they're in stock.
  • 2 0
@barp: I'll definitely go check it out, thanks!
  • 5 0
Use the International metric system for God's sake!
  • 2 0
Mi sa che dio preferiva l’imperiale...
  • 2 0
How many people build their bikes from the frame up as opposed to a stock bike on the floor of a shop?
What brakes? Whatever is on the bike? What wheel? Whatever is on the bike??
  • 1 0
Absolutely, u buy complete then upgrade if needed, build bikes from frame became obsolete with current ‘standards’
  • 1 0
What is your budget for your next mountain bike? *
New or used. Estimated in USD.
Which brand of complete mountain bike will you likely purchase next? *

f*cked if I know, I only just bought a new MTB. I couldn't answer "none" or "no idea" at this point so I had to give up.
  • 3 0
I'll keep my personal information private. Make my own $250. And continue to post my opinion on this website. Thanks though.

I guess?
  • 1 0
 Yep', disappointing survey.
Here's a suggestion : E-bikes and e-bikes forks should have mount options for racks, lights, mudguards, lock and everything. These things are pretty expensive, much more than just a bike, can pretty much be a commuter.
  • 1 0
Where's the option for "I'd care about ebikes if I could legally ride them somewhere interesting"?

Also, agree with the guy who says you need an option for how happy you are with your current stuff, and an " undecided" for future stuff.
  • 3 0
All bikes should support 150mm dropper minimum. The fact that small bikes only support short droppers is annoying.
  • 3 0
They should give away free subscriptions to Trailforks!! That would be the only fair exchange..
  • 3 0
Are people that shallow that they know what brand of gloves they are going to buy in 6 months time?
  • 2 0
How rich are you and are you a brand gear whore is all I ever see from PB surveys. More to bikes than marketing affluence but they would never know it. Waste of time.
  • 3 0
This was all fake if I don't win....
  • 3 0
Do you think 15mm axles are bullshit...... YES
  • 2 0
I'd love my next bike purchase to be a GG Shred Dogg to replace my 05 Prophet, but "in my dreams" was not an option.
  • 4 1
Needs to have the option "I want a 27.5 or 26 rear wheel"
  • 2 0
Needs to have the option "Whenever my current bike no longer satisfies my needs" instead of just time periods
  • 1 0
I provided AT LEAST $250 worth of useful information.

Also used the Other option for which brand I'll be purchasing next. Most times I don't have a preference.
  • 2 2
Tldr, is this just a market research survey or does it allow us input on things such as "standards", direction we want to see the industry move to, etc.
I'm gonna be honest I don't want to be bothered if it's the former.
  • 2 0
 just a market research survey
  • 1 0
Theres nothing about standards in there except wheel sizes.
  • 3 0
@pinkbike everyday does not mean every day
  • 2 0
Every time you buy or don't buy something that is your voice, so you are always heard
  • 1 0
Choose multiple options and then 2 is a limit, also shoes and gloves only one option? I ride different brands for different jobs
  • 1 0
I wear different brands on my left and right feet. Where's my option?
  • 1 0
I was surprised tbat Catalyst pedals were not an option in the pedal category. I'm thinking many riders use them. I'm a size 13 US and other pedals are too small.
  • 1 0
I won’t be doing the marketing survey but if the gear manufacturers would go ahead and make some clothes out of literally anything other than polyester it would be ace
  • 3 2
Drivetrain and next bike option: Gearbox ebike. Blame Chris Porter for convincing me.
  • 1 0
 You mean DCA
  • 2 0
@sarahmoore what is to rank? 1 or 13?
  • 2 0
ben cathro says my bars are the wrong size !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 2 0
The money i get for one year are less then the lower in the table Frown
  • 1 0
One of the worsy surveys ever but I had fun giving out free market infos. Do I get a sticker?
  • 2 1
Easily the kookiest thing Pinkbike has ever done, come on guys … seriously what a waste
  • 1 0
Could have been more clear with the rating portion better. With what was the low and what was the high.
  • 1 0
Honestly, super cheap survey, it is like 0 effort to create or make it outstanding comparing to any other mtb press
  • 1 0
It’s pretty obviously a data grab to sell to advertisers and manufacturers. Dumb survey with nothing interesting for the users.
  • 2 0
How much does PB make on this data?
  • 1 0
this shit was way too long. hope everyone gave wrong answers to wreck your free market research pb
  • 1 0
There's 2 sunrace options under the aftermarket drive chain components you would buy next
  • 2 0
Please fill this out so we can sell the data.
  • 1 0
PB would market off your soul to the highest bidder of they could make a buck off it at this point.
  • 1 0
I just want to know what happened to Picture of the Day, I can't see them at all.
  • 13 13
Once you’ve collected all this data, will you then rent it back to us for a monthly charge, PB?
  • 2 0
I would like my Trailforks subscription to be subsidized for giving them all my personal data to sell
  • 11 11
Here is how we sell you to our advertisers. But it’s for you to make biking better. We promise.
  • 13 1
I mean, obviously yes, but what else do you expect them to do? Do you pay to access the site?
  • 1 0
@charliewentoutside: Bingo. "When something is free, you are the product that's for sale"
  • 11 11
hate ebikes and would never spend a dime on them, obviously was the only answer there hehe
  • 2 0
I have a strong urge to know what percentage that response pulls.
  • 1 0
i win that gift card, im getting pinkbike slides for me and all the boys
  • 2 0
 More like 30 mins.
  • 1 0
Came for the Taj cartoon and the comments. 10/10 would recommend.
  • 2 1
Thank you for having inclusive gender options, PB!
  • 3 0
It’s nice to see unfortunately “transgender” isn’t a standalone gender so having that as a standalone option feels pretty othering.
  • 1 0
Gotta do better than pinkbike merch gift card for my time
  • 1 0
I looked at the shop and couldn’t even put together a cart of $250 of PB items that seemed interesting.
  • 1 0
Where is the curling option ?
  • 1 0
No option for hybrid and or commuter bikes was weird. Had to put gravel
  • 1 0
What brand of clothing next? Hopefully Pinkbike brand.
  • 2 5
Survey 101 answers need to be mutually exclusive. Having ebike as a category to select against xc/trail/enduro/Road is dumb, I do all those and more on my ebike.
  • 1 0
That's because ebikes are motos but pb wants to market them as mtbs to save their industry future from the rest of motorized recreation they're also encouraging to trails by setting precedent. This survey is garbage.
