 $37 CAD for a calendar... I mean, I like Pinkbike and all, but that's pushing it some. If I lived somewhere where shipping weren't almost as much as the product, I'd probably be all over this though.

 Ask for a 4 day discount

 The calendar is $20 CAD.

 Hi, I work in shipping. It does not happen magically without effort. It takes time, energy and resources. We need to get paid too.

 @HpSauce: hello shipping representative. While I have you, I wanted to ask, why is shipping always either Free or insanely expensive? Is there no middle ground?
  • 20 1
 @speed10: I believe "insanely expensive" is a misconception... Bear with me...

Here is a brief run down of what it probably would have taken to get @codfather1234 his calendar from Pinkbike Squamish, Canada to Daventry, UK.
1) Full online courier I.T. infrastructure for Pinkbike to print shipping labels & get the pickup dispatched to;
2) A local driver (truck + petrol) in Squamish to do local pickup and return to;
3) A staffed local sorting depot to sort the package and pass it to;
4) A longer distance driver (truck + petrol) to take it to a;
5) Staffed sorting depot near Vancouver airport who would pass it to:
6) A driver to take it onto the tarmac, plus full ramp crew and equipment to load it into the aircraft.
7) Then you've got pilot, copilot, aircraft, jet fuel and full Air Traffic Control support.

Unlikely that this would be a direct flight from Vancouver to London... It would probably stop at a hub... Say Toronto or Memphis... So...
8 ) Ramp crew, unloading equipment, driver back to a new sorting facility, sort again.
9) Driver back to the tarmac, ramp crew, loading equipment, pilot, copilot, aircraft, jet fuel, Air Traffic Control.
10) Don't forget to manifest the cargo and report it electronically to both export & import Customs agencies... cause it's leaving the country now.

Now our calendar is finally in London! Guess what?
11) Ramp crew, unloading equipment, driver, sort facility.
12) Report that thing to UK Customs & get it Customs cleared (even a calendar that is duty/tax free is still reported to Customs).

You can probably keep going with at least two more trucks and a sort facility before it actually makes it to his door.

Now factor in all the extra overtime pay going to folks working 12 hour days this time of year, trying desperately to keep up with the work load and get people like ale50ale down there his calendar (Holy crap @ale50ale I'm originally from Bracebridge!!)

And all while fighting some unusually sketchy road conditions on the Sea to Sky this month.

All that, my friend, for $17… That... That is actually. A. Motha. f*cking. DEAL!!

If shipping is “Free”, the shipper has likely signed a huge exclusive contract with one courier for x# of packages per year. Maybe they lose a little on the smaller packages, but they make some back on the bigger packages. And that cost is built into the price of the product you are buying. I assure you, the above process is never “Free”.

You want to see “insanely expensive”? Ship home a deceased relative who died while out of the country on vacation.

EDIT: It is longer than a Waki rant... I'm so ashamed....

 @HpSauce: To say I’m genuinely impressed, would be an understatement.

 @brianpark: The shipping to the UK is $17 CAD. 20 + 17 = 37

Please note; at no point did I say that this was an unreasonable price for the shipping. All I'm saying is that the total price for the calendar is more than I would want to pay. Which I do not think is unreasonable.

 @HpSauce: shipping is fine tuned and impressive logistic. Prices seem to be fair to me (despite the fact I also still don't like to pay for it). But I've always wondered how on earth is it posible that some very cheap websites (chinese mainly) ship for free stuff that are worth less than 1$ !? I don't get how they get these deals with the shipping compagnies. It's very absurd and leads to compulsive useless shopping (which I participated in sometime)

 @raph11: state bailouts

 @karoliusz: sure could be that but expensive politic, not seeing the point if it brings you less than what it costs. Plus there is the cost of delivery in the destination country, which is much higher than in china, they have to pay these guys too.

 @raph11: Chineese are not logic but they are determined.

 @HpSauce: this sounds exactly like the smart ass lady at Fox Racing. I needed a single o-ring and they charged me 1495 shipping. The lady on the phone when I complain ask me if I thought the O was going to get up itself and walk to my house.
  • 2 0
 @HpSauce: what an exceptionally thorough answer. Thank you
  • 3 0
 @properp: I would tend to agree with the lady on the phone at Fox Racing. Next time, try refusing to pay the shipping fee & instead, wait for the O-ring to walk to your house. In the meantime, have fun riding while your Fork/Shock leaks oil all over.

For the record: I loathe working in the shipping industry and I wish to escape a.s.a.p!
It is way too high stress and the level of gratitude from customers is generally either:
a) "My shipment arrived on time, cool, status quo", or;
b) "My shipment is late?? OH MY GOD THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!!!!!!!!! *slam fists on desk* *LOUD NOISES!!*"

So please do not mistake my previous post as some sort of high and might "look at us, we're so awesome post"... I was just telling it how it is.

 @HpSauce: all good bro shred on whether you're on a leaky Fox product or a 24 inch wheel. To add a little icing to the cake the actual shipping on the envelope $0.78

 I’d pay $37 CAD for a scantly clad @RichardCunningham and @MikeLevy picture book but that’s probably just me. Personally I’m not much of a bike person.

 Happily ordered mine along with some sweet socks on Dec.10. Didn’t “really” expect it in time for Xmas, but being in Canada, didn’t think it was out of the question.

Still waiting.....

 It would be cool if next year we could custom the calendar with the pics we want....

 Easy there killer.

 You can already do that - and not only that. You can even have it printed locally instead of paying for shipping.

 I received my calendar, it's great except for one very important thing! There are no location details for the pics, only riders and photographer information... Very Disappointing!
