by Pinkbike Staff

What does it take to race an EWS like Crankzilla? There are hundreds of competitors that don't have the funding of the top pros, so Brett Tippie hit the trails to find out just what it takes.

I was surprised at the $6k and $10k number being thrown out there. What the hell are they including in that cost, the bike?

Should be able to do it WAY cheaper, imo. Even if coming over seas.
  • + 17
Upt o $3K in flights easy, plus transfers to Whistler, accomodation, insurance, food, entry, etc. Easy to get to $5K even if you're only doing the race, let alone staying for a holiday. Travelling with bikes makes everything more expensive.
  • + 5
@mrtoodles: When you're american your money goes twice as far and the plane ride is much cheaper.

Even a hotel in Whistler for a few weeks would be over a grand.
  • + 3
And bear in mind currencies as well, if an Aussie says 10K, that's not the same thing as if an American or Canadian says that figure. I agree with the other points as well .
  • + 6
 Quick rough estimate conversion:
$10k Australian = $7,800 US. Canadian $ is essentially on par with Australian $
$10k New Zealand = $7,200 US.
$10k Hong Kong = $1,280 US

goal is to make the trip for under $10,000 Hong Kong dollars for sure.

But seriously, hats off to the Privateer. Long may they live, and may some pro rider actually buy the beer for them.

'Should be able to do it WAY cheaper, imo. Even if coming over seas.' - Yup, lazy bastards could have swam.
  • + 1
@WolfStoneD: good luck finding a hotel for a few weeks for anywhere near a grand. I stayed for 14 nights for $4500 for accommodation alone, but I'm not staying in some shitty hostel and having AC and bike valet is worth it. They also drive the price up for Crankworx.
  • + 3
@mrtoodles: 3k in flights??? Maybe if you're coming from Pakistan.

Western Canada to just about anywhere in Europe runs 700 - 1300 CAD round trip. Tack on an extra $200 for Oceania. A bike adds $50-$150 each way depending on the airline.

Food should cost ~$25 per day, max. Hotels will run 120-150/night during Crankworx but if you're smart you're sharing, so let's say $65. Without looking it up I'd guess a transfer runs about $100 each way from YVR at the high end.

Insurance is a tough one because it's so variable, but I recently spent 2 weeks climbing and skiing in Europe and insured myself for about $120 so let's roll with that. Race entry is what, like $300?

That totals out to roughly $3000-4000 CAD for 2 weeks in Whistler, including the race and without in any way dirtbagging it. Add in some discretionary spending like booze and lift tickets and you might, MIGHT get above $5000 for the full 2 weeks. Just coming for the race would be cheaper, but the cost per night would be much higher.

People get taken for a ride in places like Whistler because they don't take the time to familiarize themselves with the place they're traveling to. They then end up throwing money at logistical issues that planning could have prevented. It doesn't help that Whistler and other such tourist traps are very well designed to take advantage of that fact.
  • + 2
Beer money. It's all in beer money.
  • + 1
 @tattooedmillionaire: holy shizha

This is why I tent. Haha omg
  • + 1
@tinfoil: $25 a day for food . maybe if you can make every meal yourself .
  • + 1
@cheetamike: Whistler still has grocery stores right? Pretty easy to take care of most breakfasts, snacks and lunches yourself with just a hotel mini fridge. Mix in some decent but not exorbitant sit down dinners, a few donair or pizza nights and the occasional grocery store rotisserie chicken, bag of salad mix, etc and keeping the average around $25 a day shouldn't be too hard. Someone who was thinking ahead might pack a hot plate and pot, opening up even more options for savings.

Or you could just eat 5 $5 meals from El Furniture Warehouse every day, which would be survivable, if repetitive.
