Not a winning run.... But still didn't get anywhere near the credit it deserved.
  • 426 9
Best run. Most creative line with some of the biggest risks. This type of run is what Rampage should be measured by.
  • 155 5
I hiked to that boulder early that morning and I can tell you guys that it was so unique and original . He got robbed!

@PHeller: here is my question. Could Semenuk, Zink, Sorge ride this line with the same speed and tricks, probably, but could Fairclough do what they do, probably not. The sport has evolved for good or bad. I did think this run should have earned 10 more pts or so, but he still earned a top 10 which is very good.
  • 95 6
@rockyflowtbay: There's no way in hell they could match his speed...
  • 112 0
@rockyflowtbay: Hmmm, no disrespect to what the other boys are doing. It’s proper insane! But I’m not too sure they could ride his line at the same speed and apart from flipping that canyon with its narrow ass take off and landing, I don’t see where they would fit in more tricks. Besides, isn’t rampage about creativity in line choice and build? Most of the other guys rode variations of sections they built together. I would say Rheeder deserved the win, but I enjoyed watching Brendog’s line the most!

@taquitos: they couldn't match his speed on a proper UCI track, but out here they probably could
  • 41 1
@rockyflowtbay: The real thing is, did they? NO, rampage is about creativity, and those guys weren't as creative as the dawg, yet he didn't score points for it.
  • 46 6
 @rockyflowtbay: lol....are you mental?

Sorge / Zink? No chance at mimicking this.

I’ve seen Semenuk do some fairly impressive shit on gnar dh, but he still couldn’t compete with Brendan.

The variety in riders’ core competencies is part of the fun; it’s just a shame Brendan wasn’t scored very well.

Definitely one of my favorite runs, but I’m not much of a slope guy.
  • 144 4
Lol even Jordie Lunn stopped at Brendans chute and turned back around, a lot of people underestimating Brendogs skill levels here!
  • 18 1
@ctd07: I don't think it's a 1:1 comparison because it wasn't a line Jordie had practiced, as far as I'm aware, but I do agree with your point.
  • 23 0
@rockyflowtbay: How about the fact that he envisioned this line when nobody else did!
  • 15 1
Brendawg thrown a podium run ..imo
  • 11 0
his first run was his final run. why? because it was a proper rampage run.
  • 4 8
flag rockyflowtbay (Oct 29, 2018 at 6:11) (Below Threshold)
@gapos999: sure, and going back to my original comment, i thought his run was about 10 points low. But in the end that doesn't really change his placement among the top guys.
  • 9 12
@nvranka: hold on, you're telling me that the top big mountain free riders, the guys who have won multiple rampages, the guys who ride fest series and film the best big mountain footage are going to look that different then Bren dog on his line? Thats just not enough respect for the guys who have dedicated their lives to riding the most gnarly stuff. Sure if everyone rode Bren's line, he might win the competition. But flipping a 55 foot flat drop is properly insane, with a even higher degree of difficulty. I appreciate the different line he chose, and going back to my original statement, he was judged too low for it.
  • 27 0
Rampage....has been moving closer to "slopestyle with exposure" for most competitors for the recent past but is still freeride for Brendog.

Personally, I much prefer freeride and Brendon's line left me applauding. But that is just my preference and there are many more who prefer lines similar to Lacondeguy's winning rampage run from 2014.

However, would I want freeride lines to dominate if I were the Red Bull promoter?

Hell no, I'd rather try and sell slopestyle with exposure, there are far more opportunities for both narrative creation and for an over-excited commentator looking to go nuclear on the superlatives on the payoff moves.
  • 17 3
Podium run, IF he had gone later in the order.
  • 2 2
@taquitos: pretty sure hey could easily these guys are pros
  • 10 5
@ctd07: Jordie never rode that chute before and he was pretty sick the whole week, including during his run. His two lines down were rider's right to that but had to be abandoned. It doesn't matter who you are, it takes a ton of time to work out doing one of those sections, you can't just blindly ride it without risking serious injury.

I think everyone here is forgetting that part of why his line was scored so low is because he was the first one to complete an entire run. Regardless of the event or the sport, if you're the first one to go, you're going to get scored lower than if you went halfway through the pack. It sucks but its something that happens with any judge-based event along these lines. You have to keep in mind there are other judging criteria for the event and while this was a very tech line with a huge canyon gap, it didn't have as big of drops and features as some of the other lines. While its a freeride comp, tricks still play a factor just like in the FWT, and he only did a backflip towards the bottom.

As far as the line itself goes, top 5 for sure and with everything else factored in, he should have placed a few spots higher in my opinion but definitely not podium or winning the thing. It seems people forget about how massive and tech the other riders were also being despite it being in a more popular area (its popular because its the better area to build a bigger/better line. I'm not sure why people feel this should deduct points... makes no sense). Remember Adolf Silva's line with the two monstrous drops? As cool as Fairclough's line was, I'd easily score Adolf's line higher even though its not as creative.

At the end of the day, its about overall impression, one judging criteria doesn't override all others.
  • 3 0
@rockyflowtbay: yes, that’s exactly what I’m telling you.

I wasn’t trying to take anything away from the slope guys...would have to imagine they’d say the same...not to mention so would Brendan about what they are doing.
  • 4 0
This POV is insane, in fact much better that original RedBull footage of his run. Why? because slopestyle tricks are much easier to film than a gnarly line. Even with a shitty perspective you still get a wow factor. So I think this is a reason Rampage is what it is - it is much easier(=cheaper) to film a grantly slopestyle competition. I totally respect all those guys flipping and throwing 360s from drops, but in order to do this they had dug the shit out of this mountain. They dig it so long that thay had no time to properly practice it (see Godziek or Semenuk misjudging speed).
  • 4 0
Would've been perfect if he got 12th place like Bizet did last year.
  • 3 5
@nvranka: well we'll have to agree to disagree. After this whole discussion I went back and watched other years runs from semenuk and zink. Their tech sections are insane. Especially zinks 2017 chute and 2016 top bit. You guys are not giving these guys the credit they deserve of tech riding.
  • 1 0
 @Thustlewhumber: that one was bizarre
  • 5 0
@MagneirMedia: Check out the line from another perspective. Jordie awesome but this is steep and rough. www.instagram.com/p/BpfN4bfn9HS
I doubt many of the freeriders would have attempted it.
  • 114 2
That was the best fucking use of the terrain out of all the runs. That was what this event should be about. Judges should have to review helmet cams IMO.
  • 40 1
Judges need to decide if this is just another slopestyle event.
  • 12 0
 @piesforyou: I'll decide for them, it isn't.
  • 4 2
@piesforyou: slope style doesn’t have drops anywhere near as big
  • 110 0
So stoked on Brendog. Dude doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s like the holy trifecta of mountain biking. Free ride, DH and just overall likable sommabitch.
  • 17 0
The greatest thing about watching that POV is knowing that behind that lens, you know that there was a big grin on Brendog's face from the start ramp to the finish.
  • 14 0
No polemics, just straight up respect & appreciation for Brendog and what he brought to Rampage this year! Judges have to work w/ the rubric they have, but there needs to be a metric that properly rewards blazing a unique path and keeping things rough, ready, & close to the original spirit of the event!
  • 18 1
@almacigatrailrider: he is just a quality guy isn't he? I tell you, if he had the pace of Gwin he would be making double what Gwin makes. His personality would attract sponsors like Christiano Ronaldo attracts tax inspectors.
  • 2 0
 He’s this generations Cedric Gracia
  • 93 2
Brendog you did it man. That was an amazing, perfect run. You should be very proud. A lot of people would pick that run for the win. Flawless.
#thepeopleschamp
  • 48 1
Would rather watch this kind of run at Rampage than another slopestyle run/event. I wish people who rode like this were rewarded more because we’d then see more riding like this, and it’s this kind of riding I enjoy watching. Not saying Rheeder isn’t skilled, but I was not nearly as entertained watching his run. #OohBabyILikeItRaw
  • 43 0
Ok, like that huge Boulder was sick and all, but that chute at 0:58 was probably my favorite part of the run...
  • 5 0
Same. That and the canyon gap!
  • 5 0
Watching the 1st time was impressive, but seeing that chute from GoPro perspective is frightening. It doesn't even look possible!
  • 42 4
Riders sharing dig teams and lines get big scores while this unique and dangerous freeride line gets zilch. Not sure anyone else would be able to link up those features with such precision. I don't care what the categories are, this was shameful judging
  • 27 1
What an assinine point system. I really felt for Brendog. Watching his face when the score came up was brutal. Went from such excitement after kicking ass on an amazing run to being totally deflated. My favorite run by far. Rampage shoudn't be a slopestyle contest.

Oh....and as if that wasn't bad enough they try to interview him DIRECTLY after that BS score pops up?? What a joke.
  • 26 1
This to me was the second place run. It would have been right to remind everyone that this is where the true spirit of the event lies. So many risks here. What a champ!
  • 25 2
He probably won't want to come back next year so... It would have been tight if he did his second run '3,2,1' anouncer guy goes to pound it, gets a 'too slow' then a middle finger. Rides casually down like a victory lap. Periodically stopping to do the 'suck it' gesture at the helicopter. Takes a piss off of 'the rock', gets to the bottom and slaps each of those kids in the corral and says 'get the fuck out of my face' to the blonde chick and ghosts everyone!
  • 2 0
this is exactly what i was waiting for.. so disappointed it didnt happen :'(
  • 4 1
That’s what kazu kokubo basically did at Xgames! Hahahah
  • 3 0
Those kids in the corral would have taken the slap in the face and still screamed "CAN I HAVE YOUR GOGGLES?!" at him.
  • 26 2
 #BRENDOGGOTROBBED!
  • 20 1
Brendan's light looked skinnier and sketchier compared to the others who did tricks where some where wide open and manicured to facilitate those tricks. There should be a balance somewhere. Regardless, Brendan's run was sick and deserved more points.
  • 21 0
My 2nd favourite run after Lacondeguy. #notfairclough
  • 2 0
 Totally agree
  • 17 1
I couldn't believe how low that scored. In my head it scored big. Either way, That was one bitcoin run!
  • 14 1
Totally robbed, everyone saying they want more of a raw line well, I have to say this is as raw as it got this year and dammit he should have been in the top five, if not top three. I woulda gave him the win just cause its Brendon. fucking legend. Better than Cedrick and in line with Peaty. hahha
  • 15 1
It's rumoured that he didn't take his second run in protest that some of the commentators still haven't worked out how to pronounce his name after all these years.
  • 6 0
 Fairclaw
  • 4 0
@Normalfanofolk: Yeah, I guess you have to take the raw with the smooth.
  • 13 6
Don't believe in rumours that do not make sense. Its so obvious. Would you take the high risk of a serious injury again when you had a perfect first run, when there is nothing to improve and when you get such a low score ?
  • 1 0
 @metaam: haha brilliant.
  • 2 0
@fossydh: Don't take everything too seriously mate.
  • 1 0
 @endlessblockades: barrahcluff old boy
  • 1 0
 Absolutely right.
  • 14 0
 That is friggen freeride bud
  • 14 1
That was sick.....canyon gap was one of the highlights of the comp for sure!
  • 12 0
I don't think Brendog should have won, but he definitely should have been scored higher. I agree it's becoming too much like slopestyle & should be more freeriding.
  • 14 0
What a ballsy line to dig and ride, Brendog is such a sick rider.
  • 10 0
One of the best runs! I had my wife's father watching with me who knows nothing about mountain biking and he was more blown away by these knarly lines than the slopestyle tricks. Sure the slopestyle tricks are like fireworks (I watch slopestyle too) but it's these lines that get the WOW! reaction so I don't buy it when they say that it's the slopestyle tricks that attract more audience. And please don't bring back the big ramps and wood features, it turns it into a circus style event. Keep it freeride!
  • 10 0
The judges already know the approximate line the riders will take so shouldn't the similarity in line choice be marked down as much as not tricking a feature? Say if three-four dig crews build one line, how can a single dig crew compete when making a more polished and therefore higher scoring line? It seems Brendan and his crew have been punished for not building with other crews which doesn't seem to be in the spirit of freeride.

There is no doubt all of these guys are truly incredible for what they are doing so it's clearly the judging that lacks clarity. Is it freeride or slopestyle, no one knows. One thing riding has over many sports is it's open to change so I'm guessing it will be clearer next year.
  • 10 0
I'm sure it was said before... From now on they should be judging each round at the END of each round. Cam McCaul said it best, 'they have to leave room for scoring...' That's bullshit and it always has been, this ain't figure skating. We have the technology to go back on the spot and view those runs back to back, they should be using it.
  • 13 1
Beyond gnarly. The guy is so F-ing skilled. Not sure I’ve ever seen him backflip before? Nailed it.
  • 2 0
Agreed, incredible. Think he backflipped in hardline practice this year.
  • 2 0
He backflipped the huge step up at Hardline in practice
  • 2 0
@KC-85: Haha, beat me to it.
  • 2 0
 @KC-85: That was epic!
  • 4 0
@KC-85: he backflipped rampage in 2015
  • 1 0
@simooo: cheers, just looked it up, epic!
  • 13 0
The rock drop was the coolest feature. Pure freeride.
  • 15 1
 ROBBED.
  • 8 0
Brendog kept the original spirit of Rampage alive with this run. Incorporating more natural terrain into his run than anyone else. More freeride, less slopestyle. Def got the shaft from the judges IMO. Full GNAR top to bottom.
  • 10 0
Yeah leave the dirt jump tricks to slopestyle. Rampage should be about raw unique lines, this is a winning run.
  • 10 0
Gnar award!!! Top 5 run for sure
  • 6 0
A true Rampage run - I felt I was riding down the mountain instead of going for a slopestyle ride - his lines between features were narrow and not groomed like the others. He got ripped - Rampage unfortunately became a slopestyle trick event down the hill. I don't think the judges wanted to give him more against the boys he was competing against - It would be blasphemy if a DH guy beat 'em all out.
  • 8 0
The only way this could have been any gnarlier is if he dislodged the boulder and had an Indiana Jones chase scene during the run.
  • 6 0
So glad to see how many other people are talking about Brendog’s run. As soon as my bother and I heard the score we were super disappointed. It’s going to take a brave judge who is willing to say, “to hell with the scoring rubric... That was a winning run.” If that doesn’t happen, we won’t get to see that type of run anymore, and it will turn into just another slopestyle event.
  • 6 0
Brendog did get robbed. For mountain bikers like myself that aren't really into slopestyle competitions, Brendog put down a ride I wanted to see. Best run there was imo, and more and more I find myself not really interested in watching this slopestyle competition anymore.
  • 1 0
First year since 2010 that I didn't see Rampage live. I knew what was going to happen, and, sadly, I wasn't mistaken.

For me, right now, Hardline > Rampage. At least, there they respect the idea behind it.
  • 13 4
Bbbbbbut he didn't do any cork 720s.....#justiceforbrendog
  • 5 0
I was most stoked about this run all day. In my opinion, this was the most Rampage-esque line anyone had going. This isn't a slope style competition; it's FREE RIDE mountain biking. No one emulated that more in his run and line choice than Brendog. The judges are former riders, so it's hard to argue with their feedback, but it just seems that the true fans want to see more of THIS!

Thank you for the POV footie!! This only solidified my opinion.

On a side note, you could palpably see the disappointment on Brendan's face when the score came back. I'm glad he didn't push himself for a second run. What could he prove? The fact that he went on to win the McGarry spirit award, cheered on his fellow competitors, and helped his buddies anywhere he could is a monumental testament to his overall character. I became a very big Brendog fan on Friday!
  • 5 0
Is it just me, or did the riders that hit jumps/drops with Redbull signs on them score higher than riders who rode more unique features with no advertisement placement?

#Conspiracy #BrendogGotRobbed
  • 3 0
Isn't there a Red Bull sign on the Rock?
  • 4 0
My favourite line for sure but i can see why he was scored so low. The contest video doesn't give the same justice as the helmet cam. Brett Rheeder and Lacondeguy have a far better formula for winning. They pick a line they can trick to establish a strong score then they can sprinkle in some fairy dust if they need a boost for there second lap. Personally a one foot cancan in a flip does nothing that the flip didnt accomplish before but the judges are forced to score higher. Brendan's line had no space to grow on the second lap which is probably why he didnt take one. It would also be very difficult to judge from the booth.
  • 8 0
 Rough AF.

Not sure if it has been posted, but this photo is insane:

  • 2 0
I gotta make that into a poster for my wall !
  • 5 0
I'd be sketched out just walking/working on that line. B-dog cleaned it like a boss
  • 5 0
 Incredible, what a badass.
  • 1 0
Unbelievable run, gutted he didn't score higher, but I guess that he was the first to complete a run was a factor in this , . He won the Kelly Mcgarry award for this though, do he did get recognised, just think he should have bumped up a few places
  • 2 1
Deserved more! Not saying he should win but definitely top 5! Yeh there's no slope style tricks but he nailed everything on that line with no pausing and as far as I can tell didn't go offline. Plus that backflip was one of the best I've seen, period!!
  • 2 1
Here's a thought: why not do all the scoring after the each round of runs? Then runs like this get the score they deserve, rather than being penalised for starting early. POV runs during the event would be awesome too - works for F1!
  • 4 0
Brendog was not robbed of a few extra points or positions. He was robbed of the overall win. Podium at worst.
  • 5 0
When I watched the coverage, all I saw was 21 winners and no losers.
  • 1 0
tricks are for kids...and a slopestyle course- this shit is next level. keepin' it as raw as possible while everyone else is riding wheelchair ramp like run-ins and landings. Can't blame him for not taking another run...he did what he came to do in his 1st run. RESPECT B!
  • 1 0
BrenDog's line was gnarly and he made it look TOO smooth...Judges obviously did not score accordingly...maybe they should have harnessed up and repelled down his line...then maybe they could have scored it accurately..C'MON MAN!!
  • 3 0
People’s champion. In my opinion that’s a free ride line. Politics of the slopsstyle game are ruining freeride. Long live freeride
  • 1 0
watched it with my wife when he made that huge canyon gap jump. It was probably the gnarliest things I've ever seen. I mean, what if he didn't make it. It almost looked like a bottomless abyss. When he was scored that low, it really bummed me out. And don't forget when he helped out Carson Storch as well. He really showed some class. The real sportsmanship.
  • 1 0
Brendog didn't make any mistake on his run. Flawless. He was the only rider on that side. He was the only rider to use a boulder the size of a damn house to jump off of. Creative and both fun and exciting to watch. He should have been placed in the top 5 easily!!
  • 1 0
Congrats! IMO the best run of Rampage. Embodies all aspects of biking and was fully gnar. Real disappointment with the score I dont know what to say about that. Brendan Fairclough should be very proud of this run it was awesome.
  • 3 0
So awesome... Amazed how he fangs it down the hill. This should be a WC DH course.
  • 3 1
That was an insane line. The rock and then the canyon gap with narrow ass landing pad and he went huuuuge on the back flip. robbed
  • 2 0
What a line, what a legend. Sure it didn't warrant a first place but that line must be a crowd favourite. Raw, exposed and rough AF. A real DH line! Champ!
  • 6 1
 Way better than 10th.
  • 5 0
 For me the real winner.

Amazing run - so different to the others and deserving of a far higher score. Gutted for you Brendog!

 The judges must be drunk.
  • 2 0
Is there a way to stream video from a GoPro? I feel like if the judges are looking at that rather than a helicopter view it might change their scores.
  • 3 0
Well, at least he cemented me as a fan forever. That was freeride at its best.
  • 3 0
Vital MTB calls it like it is and Pinkbike stays politicaly correct....lmao......BREN-DOG GOT ROBBED WORST THAN NORBZ did...
  • 3 0
Seriously. Who were the judges this time? I m pretty sure they are aware of the shit they did by now.
  • 3 0
Great run, but why can't Americans pronounce brendogs name right?! Who's Brendan "Fairclaw"?
  • 2 0
I think we need to stop calling him Brendog and start calling him Sendog, cuz that level of send is in a whole 'nother galaxy.

  • 2 0
Jordie Lunn didn't made down Brendog's chute. Just saying. And saying that without any offense nor disrespect to M.Lunn
  • 2 0
tricks are counting too much in scoring , that looked very difficult , just my opinion
  • 3 0
Why can't the Yanks pronounce Fairclough????
  • 4 0
Maybe they think it's like Slough or plough.
  • 1 0
@Normalfanofolk: Maybe they think it's like Loughborough.
  • 2 0
Awesome line. Very different line, with a good bias, big jumps. Its a lot of variety.. Real freeride.
  • 3 0
Rampages scoring gave me a flashback of this years X-games Real Moto.
  • 2 0
Speed, raw grar, a unique feature that no one else hit and a backflip. Top 3 IMHO
  • 2 0
 Rampage IS NOT SLOPESTYLE.

STOP JUDGING LIKE IT IS!!!!!!!

BRENDOG, FFS, YOU REALLY HATE HIM THAT MUCH?
  • 1 0
My favorite run. The Dwayne Johnson looked sick but that gap he cleared was insane. No one else messed with that. A screw up there and you're dead!
  • 2 0
That is WAY gnarlier that it looked on RBTv. That chute!!!!!
  • 2 0
Blind take off over that bush at the end was heckin sketch my dude.
  • 2 0
Brendog's run is def top 5 in my view!
#BrendogGotRobbed
  • 1 0
Judges should have the rider's view to really see what's going on, most creative and rough line for sure.
  • 3 0
 robbed
  • 3 0
 That was freakin amazing
  • 2 0
A true Rampage run, Brendog was ROBBED
  • 1 0
I would think the tech is out there for judges to do live streaming from a rider's helmet cam
  • 2 0
Winning run rite there, its Freeride, not slope style!
  • 1 0
if it is terrifying to watch on a GoPro, can't even imagine what it's really like. Heavy, Heavy line choices! #huevosgrande
  • 2 0
This was the best line at Rampage hands down
  • 1 0
Complete BS, this deserved a way higher score!
Hopefully this doesn’t put him off from coming back
