Qualifying Results: Fort William World Cup DH 2018

by Pinkbike Staff
Kaos Seagrave takes one last moment to rest his hands on the boardwalk before smashing through rocks for the next four minutes.

Fort Bill gave us some surprise good weather today, at least for the start of qualifying... But there are a lot of questions that will be answered tomorrow.

With a 20 second lead on 2nd, Vali Holl absolutely crushed the field in Junior Women's seeding. She'd be sitting in 5th in Elite Women, bumping Cecile Ravanel down a spot. Madness. In Junior Men, Kye A'hern pipped Kade Edwards by half a second and looked strong out there.

Great to see Myriam and Rachel battling it out in the Elite Women. Tahnee rounded out the top 3, but is 9 seconds back and has her work cut out for her tomorrow. In Elite Men, we've got some wild results, with Luca Shaw edging out Danny Hart by only 0.088 seconds. It had started to rain by the time Danny dropped, but with times that tight should he have been in a skinsuit?

Gwin was up at the first split but got a rear flat, rolling on the foam insert down the motorway past our photographers. Eddie Masters was disqualified, trying to get more info there. EWS phenom Maes sits in an impressive 9th place, after not riding a DH bike for quite some time. Can't wait for tomorrow...

Also, good luck trying to figure out the start list. It's the top 20 riders minus the not top 20 riders divided by the number of riders times the circumference of the average wheel size for the riders who raced in Croatia but didn't finish.
  • + 8
With this system is it possible that someone that qualified actually gets bumped out of the event?
  • + 22
 @onemind123: yes and no
  • + 24
They should just let Bulldog go last to make up for Losinj
  • + 10
I've heard even if you qualify in the top 20 you need to play rock, paper, scissors against those above the top 20 mark to be one of the final 20 down the hill.
  • + 6
This "system" smells like rotten butt drippings. Luca is a beast, can someone put a real set of tires on for Gwin tomorrow.
  • + 4
@motorcrosser12: Beats the old system where they would roshambo for start position. Rumour has it they had to cut it out when Danny's balls got so big they started to kick back.
  • + 1
I heard you need to learn differential equations to understand the start order
  • + 2
Does anyone have any feckin clue who goes Last tomorrow??
  • + 13
It was tricky, but after consulting the position of the moon divided by the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, the starting order for tomorrow has been figured out. You can view the men's and women's start lists above.
  • + 5
 @onemind123: yes it isn´t
  • + 1
 @mikekazimer: multiply by scribd = 0
  • + 10
@mikekazimer: What do you mean? An African or European swallow?
  • + 1
@fecalmaster: bah, gwin just has to ride smoother, looks like plenty of other riders didn't flat.
  • + 1
@brianpark: on Scribd, God help us all.
  • + 1
@fecalmaster: i take it he flatted?
  • + 1
@BenPea: if someone developed a website with reformatted scrib info and replay links i think it would drive enough traffic to make some money on some ads.
  • + 0
@mikekazimer: is that an African or European swallow?
  • + 1
@jrocksdh: here you go (almost), Eliot Jackson's site, very useful:
worldcup.eliotjackson.com
  • + 97
 Vali is an absolute weapon.
  • + 11
 #future
  • + 16
Yep, wow, just wow at that quali time. 20 seconds ahead of the second place Junior Women rider - would have got 5th place in the Elite Women!
  • + 60
Look at the time! She was Hölling ass.
  • + 1
definitely licensed to kill. heavy hitter.
  • + 6
Her top speed was faster than all the elite women.... definitely the future
  • + 16
@Boardlife69: saving this for a future race report title. Where do I send the huge royalty cheques?
  • + 6
@brianpark: In my Swiss bank account. Or send me review bikes, or beer, or a pair of matching socks.
  • + 1
@helldriven1: efff the future, she's legit now
  • + 1
Her time would have placed her 5th in Elite. Sooo sick. New wave is coming...
  • + 36
 Martin Maes ist the man!
  • + 4
And since he hasn't been riding a DH bike for two years, it's even more impressive!
  • + 2
@ka-brap: ahahhah Fort William is like a EWS track its perfect for him x
  • + 8
@BMXrad: Well, most EWS tracks are more technical than Fort William, so I'm not sure about that. Fort William is more flat out speed and smashing into boulders vs. technical roots and steeps. I'm honestly surprised he did well here (so far).
  • + 1
@ka-brap: you're damn right, Fort Bill ain't that steep or technical at normal pace. But at the speed they hit things it changes everything.
  • + 1
 Martin is Savage...
  • + 27
 Martin Maes what the heck!!
  • + 4
BELGIAN POWER HE WILL WIN TOMORROW YOUR HEARD IT HERE FIRST
  • + 2
 Bloody beast!!
  • + 1
Should have put him in the Fantasy on short notice!
  • + 2
@RedBurn: seems like all of that training in belgian mountains is paying of!
  • + 23
Had to double take the decimal point when I read that Valentina Holl put +20.435 into the field!
  • + 2
and that is only 1.5 seconds behind Tracey and Tahnee, took a lot on Cecile Ravanel too
  • + 3
YT sure knows how to select racers.
  • + 16
The rain started half way through quali. Hart in the wet. Shame the jumps section of the dh track at Fort William keeps costing him in Scotland. Nearly 2 seconds up heading into the bottom section.
  • + 14
7 seconds faster then Myriam Nicole yesterday in timed training!
  • + 5
The force is strong with this one
  • + 11
maybe she should just skip being a junior although I think the red painted boxer gives her the advantage in juniors though.
  • + 11
Anyone know what happened with Ed Masters? Seems he was DSQ??
  • + 1
 YEah, what happened?
  • + 0
 Does he still race?
  • + 28
He stopped mid run to join his vanzacs friends for a barbecue and some beers
  • + 7
He had a massive crash just before the deer gate and I guess he got DQ'd for not entering the tape where he left.
  • + 3
@dhross: ouch. at least he made it down.
  • + 10
@wmelton14: amazed he got up from it so fast mate it was a huge crash right in front of us.. Hard as nails
  • + 4
@dhross: But he is protected, he should be allowed to ride tomorrow. #leteddiein
  • + 9
Gwin playing mind games again with those times... Go Finn!!
  • + 2
 Did he have a wreck?
  • + 5
17th with a flat??? This going to be tight tomorrow.
  • + 5
@hamncheez: Gwin has another couple of levels he can tap into during race day. He's not showing his cards.
  • + 4
 @jaydawg69: he got a flat
  • + 10
 Maes is an animal
  • - 3
 He is Belgian
  • + 1
 Savage!!
  • + 9
Damn, Luca is darkhorsing like a boss!
  • + 5
He nearly won the last round. Hardly a dark horse.
  • + 3
@jclnv: I'm talking in general this season. Not just this round of quals
  • + 2
@MikeAzBS: Shaw is never a dark horse. Future GOAT.
  • + 7
Second in points going into this round, winner of a few Junior World Cups...
  • + 9
Vali Holl is really impressive, can't wait for her turning elite
  • + 2
She s already 5 th in the elite catagory
  • + 1
Yes - but would she be on elite podium if she finished 5th?
  • + 6
Gwin's still in my pool tho, no offense to the other riders. If his tires hold on tomorrow, there is no way he is not gwinning
  • + 7
So now all the results are in, UCI decided the last person to go down the hill will be Bill gates cos he's the richest
  • + 8
I think Jeff Bezos would go last now.
  • + 1
Uci was forced to change the start order by sponsors.
  • + 7
Is it possible to compete in DH as an Elite rider when you're too young?
Like Martin Maes did in EWS.
  • + 1
Just listened to the Leigh Donovan Inside Line podcast and she told a story about how the UCI forced Anne Caro to race Juniors at world champs b/c of her age, so I’d guess not. Seems dumb.. if she’s fast enough to compete then let her.
  • + 4
Yes. Your national federation needs to make the request in writing to the UCI. The UCI usually says yes.
  • + 15
Richie Rude did that. But to be fair he was born fully grown.
  • + 5
Good to see Fearon getting back into the mix.
  • + 3
Rumor is Claudio is done forever on track previews after the severity of his post crash TBI. Super sad if true????, but health comes first. Best wishes either way, Claudio!
  • + 7
If so, sad as it is, they should get that Cathro guy to do ‘em- he’d be an excellent successor.
  • + 4
Per Vital MTB in regards to Gwin: "We're hearing he had a cut tire and finished his run with 8psi."
  • + 13
Aren't all the cool kids running 8psi these days?
  • + 1
good thing he has inserts... he would have been dfl if not.
  • + 5
Luca... thought so. Greg in 5th. Awesome buddy.
  • + 2
Happy to hear that Dean Lucas didn't race (read on Vital and on Dean's insta). Faith in humanity restored. Fingers crossed for his fast recovery.
  • + 1
 1st. ATHERTON Rachel 5:07.825
2nd. NICOLE Myriam 5:09.765 +1.940

and the the rest of the world at 0.05....... and tracy in its place , no more...!!!!

and cool for cecile!!
  • + 3
Dakotah Norton up there again, big respect!
  • + 1
I bet Atherton is "stoked" at her quali. If she wins tomorrow she will be "super stoked" I'm sure.
  • + 3
 Yeah Luca!
  • + 1
Saw a men’s elite rider late on have a bad crash near the bottom anyone know who it was/ how he’s doing?
  • + 1
 Ed Masters
  • + 2
What in the hell happened to Gwin?
  • + 2
“Cut tire and finished with 8 psi” fastest in first split per Vital.
  • + 1
What's with all the big gaps between sectors 1&2 in the men's? Some top guys losing 5-10 secs...!
  • + 2
its the longest split. half the track is in that split actually
  • + 2
 What happened to Phil Atwill?
  • + 1
 and ed masters?
  • + 2
Rachel and Myriam in a league of their own today
  • + 2
 Is live timing available anywhere?
  • + 4
 @kdimock: Cheers lad!
  • + 5
@kdimock: The link is just going to a blank UCI page... anyone else getting this?
  • + 1
@joel4: yeh it seems to be crook
  • + 1
Last I saw it was Luca, Hart, Loris, Blenky. Gwin was 9th, but only 15 on track.
  • + 1
@joel4: UCI page is shite. Slow but eventually gets there.
  • + 3
Luca Hart Loris Brosnan Williamson Blenkinsop Fearon Norton A. Pierron Iles MVG Brayton Gee Fairclough Niko Gwin Bulldog
  • + 2
prod.chronorace.be/angular/results.html#/uci/event/20180602_dh/DHI/ME/dh/2/res the live timing production source is struggling for some reason.

Gwin in 16th place. Big mistakes? Trying for an earlier start tomorrow? Keeping his cards close to his chest?
  • + 1
@brianpark: Depends how the start list will work out based on the top 20 protected, like how it changed everything in Losinj
  • + 1
@brianpark: Nice to see Finn rounding out the top 10! Any idea where Miranda Miller is sitting?

Cheers!
  • + 1
Every second counts. It’s going to be tight on race day!

 How many Elite Women qualify?
