Congratulations to Loic Bruni and Miranda Miller for their wins...BUT that whole venue was a huge disappointment. The track and redbull's coverage was garbage. The highlight was Sam Hill getting 6th on his enduro bike.
  • 128 4
Redbull did not do the coverage, it was an AUS company
  • 52 5
Couldn't agree more, the worst race coverage top to bottom I have seen yet. That whole fiasco with Tracey Hannah and the results...the non consistent split times from rider to rider, I mean how hard is that to get right? its a graphic that runs from software...wth?...the terrible camera angles...alll crap
  • 202 16
Agreed on the track, just so MEH.

In terms of coverage, as a Motorsport fan who experiences other sports... I wish people would stop the f*cking whining. I have to PAY to watch Motocross on my laptop. The coverage is NO better than downhill, we have the same issues in terms of cut outs (entire weekends missed), and I honestly don't understand what people complain about.

If I want to watch Formula 1 (which I do), I can't even pay for an annual subscription. I have to pay Sky Sports around £30 per month for the entire year, and even then - I can only watch when I'm in the UK.

The coverage Red Bull provide for free is great. Yes, they miss parts. But this isn't the biggest sport in the world, and in comparison to a lot - it's freaking class.

Everybody would be cheering what a great race it was if Mick won. Just saying. Blame the Frenchmen for stealing that hottie on the dance floor.

@asboites: agree..not to mention timing errors..poor Eleonora has been dropped from podium..these are things that can happen on a regional race..not at worlds..

 Couldn't have said it better!

Also again coil shocks std wheel sizes beat 29ers air shock and other flat course gimmick, Sam Hill ride was awesome flats and an Enduro bike????

@jamesdunford: well clearly you don't remember the days of Freecaster, while not perfect, they didn't strangle the commentators regardless of what Warner says he prefers that's the paycheck talking he was a better more entertaining character in his freecaster days, he will be remembered for that, not the shit he does now, the coverage was way better even though it struggled with the internet quality as much as the sign or time period here we are 7/10years down the track coverage is worse, monopolised and just the usual Bs run by soulless corporates! I never thought Redbull would become the corporate it has today! It built its empire being different now it's just like the rest of the vampires!
  • 22 17
@jamesdunford: if you complainers don't like it then it's simple. Start your own media company, until then shut the f@&k up. Have a nice day ????
  • 7 3
Agreed! I was going to watch the highlights, but after watching it live, I decided instead to watch my grandmother ride a stationary bike in her basement. Was just as exciting.
  • 15 3
Can I just ask something? Have people always complained about the venue and the coverage? I mean, this is my first year actually following all the pro level events, and I don't have any complaints. As far as the coverage goes, yeah I would like to see more of the track, but it's not like you can have a cameraman on every corner, right? We see more of the run than any spectators will when they're there. As for the venue, it was still hard enough to give riders flats, make them slide out or crash, and still allowed some really close racing. So what are people so mad about? What more would you like to see?
  • 4 3
Terrible track for sure, as far as coverage, I am wondering if Carnes is just a difficult track to get good angles on. The race there 3 year's ago, the coverage was much worse so it is at least getting better. No excuse for the mess ups on times though, that is nonsense to have your medal taken away hrs. after finishing.
  • 10 1
Minus the rock garden, the track looks like a blue run you'd find in Whistler...
  • 1 0
@stickman5000: I undestand the Cairns track to be very difficult to get good angles on as it's in the middle of a jungle, literally. Vegetation is far too dense.
  • 3 0
@jamesdunford: there's plenty of places to get free MX coverage, just gotta look...
  • 5 1
@wannabeabiker: There is a sizeable pool of trolls on the internet who are going to complain about everything, no matter what. And a goodly chunk of troll-trolls who will complain about all the complaining. But: I thought this (men's) race was less watchable than any other race in 2017. (The women's race was interesting for all its crashy drama.) The point others have made about it tricky camera angles at Cairns is interesting--makes sense to me, weird plants and alien trees everywhere. But the lack of any rider interviews before and after their runs also made it a weirdly soulless affair. I missed that element a lot. And... so much pedalling! It must have been that much worse in previous years before they added those jumps at the end.
  • 1 1
@Cashman39: I'm not complaining, I'm saying what we have now is great Wink

@expat Ahh, I use them all (VIP Sports, Blizzard extreme on FB etc), but it's still much harder than a free stream from RB.
  • 9 0
@Maverickdh00: Bring back Rod Warmer. We didn't care about picture quality or tracks being rubbish when Rob was getting shit faced in the booth/shed with CG or Page.
What we need is more gems like these: "Steve Peat has done more for Downhill Mountain Biking than Osama Bin Laden has done for terrorism".
  • 5 1
@vic690: dude, the biggest sport in the world sees big mistakes by officials in every single game. This happens in mtb once in a blue moon. They were in a jungle ffs...
  • 2 0
@vic690: and if you can tell me how to delete a double post i will be eternally grateful!
  • 5 2
@DamianNZ: Nothing like it . Did a season there and live in Cairns, this one gets the heart racing much more than Whistler black runs. Plenty of tech, big exposed roots, super high speed sections and some big commitment for some of the faster lines. Yeah there are some flat sections... But not as much as people seem to whinge about.

it certainly lacked something. Or a few things - exciting track, exciting commentary, good camera angles/positions. I just found it dull really.
  • 2 0
@teamcliff: it's not that kind of stationary bike....
  • 3 0
Take it from someone working in the TV industry... televising a downhill race, to the level we'd all love, is not only extremely difficult logistically but it would cost a fortune. The only way that changes is by making the sport more popular/profitable thus more attractive to advertisers. So tell your buddies to get a bike and start riding.
  • 3 0
@wannabeabiker: welcome to Pink Bike, it's standard procedure to bitch about as much as you can about everything - tracks, wheel size, clothing etc etc. It's a good thing there's Pink in the name, because it's generally like walking into a class of 8 year old school girls all being upset at the same time about different things
  • 1 0
@kelownakona: could not agree more no good camera angles or they seem to be in the wrong spots.
  • 3 2
It was a lame track but at least it was dry and everyone got a shot. I think the coverage generally is great, ok a few more angles would be nice but its free and is exciting. I dont think there is much to change. Rob is an excellent talented presenter I think it would be hard to replace him. I like him being a little more professional I think it helps represent the sport well. I think though he needs a good sidekick to give some insightful information . I find Claudio a little awkward. Claudio as a presenter doesnt bring any insightful information really. He just says obvious stuff . He didnt even have any information on his fellow countrymen who were racing from Switzerland which was very poor I thought and showed a lack of interest. His voice is also a little irritating. Claudios course previews are good though.

Sooo keyboard warriors.... question... Can we finally put the whole Sam Hill switched to Enduro because he couldn't make grad with the worlds elite DH racers anymore.. to rest? 6th place! (On a Enduro bike) I would say he quilfies for some respect.. dudes a legend 4life. Congrats to Miller and Bruni! Sick runs..

Shout out to my mate who wattsapped me the result when I'd successfully avoided PB so I could watch the replay untainted. Wanker.
  • 4 0
 Friendship over.
  • 9 12
I was making my wife check my cell phone to make sure I saw nothing before I could watch the replay this morning.

From a spectator point of view and a long time fan, I've always HATED one day Worlds. It's an "everybody but that one guy" crashes type event. And the race time by "ranking" is horrible. Then, add that we ALL know who the contenders are that can cover the sprint. It's bad TV. 60 or so riders who don't have a chance AT ALL. and then 5-8 guys in the top 20 who are gonna suck at the sprint and 5-6 guys who might win if they don't fall. 3-4 of those guys fall anyway taking away the intensity.

Mick's awkward celebration with 29 riders to go. Tracy's feet up disappointment & only us watching all realizing that she should get up, get up, get up.

Just uncomfortable.
  • 6 2
@bizutch: dude she was concussed and got up as soon as she could... Stfu
  • 9 0
@bizutch: Mik celebrated because he knew he had an awesome run. He got the lines he wanted and he got the speed he wanted. What's your deal dude? 5-6 people who could win it? That's just bullshit.
  • 3 4
@mollow: didn't know it at the time, so my bad on that one. why don't you "4 letters" yourself. Big Grin
  • 3 4
@leopaul: Yeah...5-6 people. Want me to name them?

Bruni
Gwin
Hannah
Minnarr
Brosnan
Noir

Only 2 other guys stood a chance of winning this race and they weren't here:
Graves
Rude

If you try to argue otherwise, you've not watched 2 decades of World Cup like I have.
  • 4 1
@leopaul: as for Mick, not that. The guys all bum rushing him while there are 29 other riders on course. Party hard, get stoked, but stay back, let Mick do his thing and cheer on the rest of the riders coming down.
It didn't ruin my lunch or bring me down.

You guys are pissy. Can't someone have an opionion besides yours?

This race had the crappiest coverage ever !!!! UCI and Redbull, what the F##k is going on?
  • 68 5
Red Bull had no control over the coverage at all
  • 20 2
RedBull weren't covering it until a very late deal was done, doubt they had enough time to get everything sorted. AIUI the cameras were done by a 3rd party so out of their control, seeing as there were no live shots of Claudio or Warner there I'd say they commented over the provided feed from elsewhere. The criticism of the UCI though is justified, they should have just gone to RedBull in the first case, even if it was just for them to act as a consultant on how to do it.

 It barely looked Enduro bro
  • 19 1
Am I the only one interested in that Polygon prototype? I know it's the rider that makes the difference, but Mick's run looked so smooth that he seemed to be slow... Perhaps that suspension layout (which seems to be the same as the one on trail bike they presented a couple of months ago) works as well as the many reviews suggested?
  • 12 0
I think it's proved itself with Mick and Tracey putting down great times. Tracey would've won by a mile if not for the crash. Some people bitch about the looks but I couldn't care less. Would love to test ride one. Like the first year of a new car model; people might wait for them to work out the kinks. And I'm going to have to wait for Poly to start selling in Canada.
  • 3 0
I thinks that polygon prototype is the real big thing in this race If a big brand have it sure the hype will be bigger

Congrats to all except the company who ran the coverage. What a complete joke. They should all be fired and never allowed to cover this or any other event. THIS IS A HIGHLIGHT VIDEO? Give me a break. An infant with a 15 year old cell phone could have done a better job.

Did the coverage cut out for anyone else when Gwin was racing? Is there anywhere I can watch his run? Also, wasn't there a kick ass whoops section on this course? Where the EFF was that in the coverage? So many questions. Riders kicked ass, bike companys kicked ass, Warner was good, Claudio sucked and the coverage was the worst ever. Most of everyone's run was the pedalling.
  • 2 0
That is where my feed dropped as well. Came back when Gwin was sitting in third or w/e.
  • 2 0
Happened to me when I was pretending to be in the US on a VPN. Changed it to Germany and got the feed back, but missed Gwin's run. Frown

Congrats on the wins to Loic and Miranda. Well deserved on a very nasty track. Thanks for the FREE coverage! Thanks to the sponsors and athletes who make this sport interesting enough that fans complain about missing 10 seconds out of a run. Till next year, we salute those that inspire our own challenges, free of coverage. :-)
  • 4 0
FWIW I usually agree with you about the free coverage, but I really think it is fair to pick a bone about filming locations, Red Bull usually does very well, but this was out of their hands. I think this really serves as an example of what they do right when they are in charge. I mean, the MSA coverage was VERY good. It is more unfair of folks to be complaining about the track being too "easy" I think. Go Bruni!
  • 1 0
@DrStairs: Yes, this particular venue was not covered in the same manner as the previous WC races by Red Bull, but overall I am a happy customer for the opportunity to watch a full season of wild and crazy racing.
  • 1 0
@DrStairs: I would agree. Also, Redbull have covered this track lots in the past, I'm sure that we have seen more of it in previous years, like the whoops etc

Minnaar... lost wc for enve antiflat system fails... lost this for enve flat system fails... is a gentleman.. a legend.. others maybe go crazy...
  • 1 0
In an interview, Minnaar said when they examined the wheel in the pits, a spoke had broken and caused the puncture. Enve's rim strip is designed to prevent pinch flatting, not renegade spokes. That's some ultra shitty luck... so gutted for Greg.

Ok Don't Shoot the Yank, risky Question!: British and Irish people, Jacob Dickson is from N Ireland, Warner said it over and over on his run, doesn't that technically make him British ? Surely he carries a British passport - so how is he wearing the Tri-color instead of the Union Jack?
  • 6 0
Folk from NI have the option to take Irish citizenship in addition to British, most sporting federations also allow you to compete for the other should you wish. Dickson has obviously decided to represent Ireland rather than the UK.
  • 6 0
People born in Northern Ireland get dual citizenship. He will have a passport from the Republic of Ireland and from the UK. He chose to ride for the Rep. of Ireland.
  • 2 0
Actually incorrect (passport has nothing to do with it), when racing in Northern Ireland you have to apply through Cycling Ireland for your race license, so if you become National Champ (even in a race held in NI) you are Irish National Champ. If racing Worlds then as Cycling Ireland are the governing body for the whole island then you race as Irish (even though you may consider yourself British or hold both passports).

As Rob has spent some time over here I imagine he is aware of getting this right, I heard he said Irish first of all and then proceeded with Northern Irish for the rest of the run.

The Idea that the UCI doesn't give a shit about Downhill has only been reinforced this weekend, like seriously a timing error on DH racing's biggest stage is just not acceptable, their coverage was also absolute shit.
  • 7 0
I mean, timing issues happen. What upsets me is how Myriam had to tell them her time was wrong. They should have caught it when it happened, what with all of their different timing failsafes.

Event was garbage, never felt so bored watching a world cup or any DH race, no wonder Sam Hill used his enduro

Really glad that Hill still kills it on the DH stuff, and I am NOT a fan of enduro bikes but people seem to have forgotten how capable these bikes are nowadays. Gwin won a World Cup on an Enduro and Graves took bronze at World Champs on his enduro bike while racing EWS all year (okay, both were South African races but still... ).

Total crap coverage again. The tracks not great but you didn't see any of it anyway. How hard is it in this day and age of cheap cameras to cover more of it. Freecaster was better years ago.
  • 1 0
Wow... Worst trac ever seen and AUSTRALIANS didn't yet changed it. For the coverage, they should let Red Bull to manage. Sorry Aussies but you have better tracks and this one isn't one of them.

For those that aren't pleased with Cairns as a venue what current regional or national venues have the most natural, rocky, rooty, off camber, droppy trail features? People seem generally pleased with Mont-Sainte-Anne and Whistler definitely has the terrain to make it happen. What are the venues that are worth a look?
