It's not a trail bike. Anything 140mm+ is an AM bike.

I'm permanently scarred from seeing a single crown go that fast. Looking at my enduro like, I'm sorry I can't love you like Sam Hill.

@mlr428: I know you're getting down voted, but you're not alone in this line of thought. It's a shit track and was a snooze fest of a world champs.

Great result and good to see him flying but surprised how much time he lost in the pedal section. Particularly leading the EWS and on a trail bike.
  • 1 0
 @nvranka: ....it weirded on me.
  • 1 0
@Farry: How much time do you think he lost on the sprint? To most riders I think he made time, no? Be good if they did that analysis thingy.
  • 4 1
@ColquhounerHooner: probably only Mik and maybe Loïc outsprinted Hill. Mik made up 3 seconds on him in a couple of hundred metres didn't he? Crazy. I'd like to see him go for the green jersey at the TdF. And I'd also like to see a few roadies bounce off him into outerspace on the final sprint in Paris.

@fartymarty: Seems like the only relevant race runs are what has happened recently, just like axle standards the OLD are left out in the dust!
  • 1 0
 @yeti951SD: you mean "relevant"...

IMO the last most significant was Gwins chainless preceded by Harts Champery.

PS i'm still rocking 135mm out back. I guess that makes me "Old Skool" ... or just OLD!!!
  • 1 2
@fartymarty: Yep but can't show Harts Champery run on TV anymore, it was on those 'tiny' 26 inch wheels. UCI and the cycling industry are flagging all 26"/135mm as propaganda to their 'bigger is always better' agenda.

@nvranka: personally, when i watch a video of any course at any place ive ridden it never looks as gnarly as when i was trying (key word here) to pin it. i dont get why everyone whos never been to cairns has to assume its all flat pedaling because the camera angles suck and are close to the track in thick jungle filled with more things that want to kill you than anywhere on the planet. ive never been to cairns so im not going to judge it by the shitty broadcast, but its also a track that has history in wc racing, and i can appreciate that.

@eeeasy: Part of winning is not crashing. You dont get to factor crashed riders in. If you cant make it down in one piece but others did, you obviously didnt win the race, you obviously weren't the best in that race. This is non-debatable.

No podiums in the 2017 wc, 9th overall and now World Champ! Let's hope this will give her the confidence to push it 2018 and become a regular on the podiums!
  • 4 1
@kronze779: forgive my ignorance... "sub tropical" makes it a better DH track in the Jungle?
  • 8 2
I'll be honest, it's better than Canberra..... Realistically, we could have a WC race in our Alpine across Victoria, but they don't put enough money into the resorts here for biking and don't have the resources to host a race. But it's probably the only place we have the real elevation, technicality and steepness for a WC track.
  • 59 4
@bentown: I agree that she won fair and square and deserves the win. However, Tracy H, Nicole, Rachel and Tahnee are in a different league to the other ladies - these four are effectively competing against each other and need to really hang it out and take risks to win (against each other). Any of these four ladies could just cruise down the hill and smoke the rest of the field -They are in a different league. Mirandas last few dh races were 16s, 27s and 18s of first place. The fact that all four have screwed up is unbelievably lucky for Miranda. Everyone is attacking eeeasy but he has a point. Thats World champs for you and it makes it more exciting because you never Know how the dice will role. Well done Miranda - you were fastest on the day and deserve to be World Champ!!!

How in the world does cairns get a World Champs? Track is a joke, coverage is absolute dog shit. And after hearing how North American World Cup stops are infeasible due to the cost for teams? Like none of this makes sense. I have a hard time truly calling this thing a dh course.
  • 47 12
Why am I watching people pedal so much... thought it was DH not XC
  • 44 37
@stevenmulcahy123: this is a joke. Now really starting to call in to question how retarded/corrupt the UCI is. How has whistler not had a WC stop? How can you justify cairns which is the back corner of the world then right off all of North America? This joke of a venue is pissing me off on so many levels.
  • 33 3
At least in the TV coverage they could have cameras in the parts without the pedalling instead of start gate -> pedalling -> drop -> pedalling -> more pedalling -> finish area
  • 17 9
@stevenmulcahy123: right? Literally 30 sec of the minute they show of the run is flat pedaling. This is a disgrace. Almost hoping Sam Hill pulls it out so there literally is no counter argument.
  • 36 6
US does not have a wc race because people do not show up to see it! And the organizers don't want to do a lot of work for little money. I was at the last 3 wc at windham, there were less people than today.
  • 127 47
@pbfan08: you know that you're country isn't the centre of the universe right?
  • 34 2
@pbfan08: the suits got paid. Cairns paid them the big $'s. TV/internet rights went to the highest bidder. ICI doesn't care if they play it and promote the sport or promote the venue that paid them. They couldn't give a rats ass. Got the fat stack in the wallet. That's all that counts. Unbelievable that we're left hanging this long only to find out we can't watch it the way we've been watching it for years. They decide the venue a couple years in advance. There is absolutely no excuse for this lack of planning. How in hell do the riders/teams/and venues put up with this. Boggles the mind how bush league this organization is
  • 53 14
@fatduke: I'm well aware, which is why I was arguing for my whole continent which is vastly under represented in contest venues. In fact if anything I argued for my neighbors (whistler/Canada) specifically to get more. Please try harder.
  • 14 12
@pbfan08: if whistler thought it would work there surely they'd have the cash to pay for it?
  • 46 14
If you think you can do better, get in touch with some tracks and make it happen. If you just want to whinge on the Internet, well be my guest then.

But we've been racing at Cairns for 21 years now so the place must be doing something right! Razz
  • 78 10
Oh yeah, for all you people whinging about how this isn't a DH track remind me again why the 4 best women in the world couldn't get down it without crashing?

The pedalling section at the end is 15sec out of a 3.30-4.00 race run. Get over it.

  • 19 7
@pbfan08: Did it occur to you that they might be racing which means they might even pedal downhill (shocking I know). There are other DH tracks where you have to pedal and chances are if you weren't racing the course you'd coast it.

  • 20 17
The XC course was more tech than the DH course
  • 22 9
@BorisBC35: we're all patriotic but really you should be pissed. The track sucks. You have better tracks but it's just about the $. Then the uci sells the tv/internet rights to highest bidder and they don't even play it live in North America. When they do play it a fraction will watch because we've all heard the deets and also that the camera are in s&@t locations so not only do you pay to advertise a poor track but it doesn't even get the viewership. Teams/riders should lay down the law. Good venues/tracks/coverage or we walk. We'll follow them right to crankworx
  • 9 9
not a good track for downhill season much less world champs and to be fair Windhams 2 minute course shouldn't be on the uci circuit either.as far as a usa stop I dont think its a cost thing since they could run it behind something like MSA if it was a money thing.
What i want to know is why didnt the racers get a kiss from the flower girls?
  • 44 14
@pbfan08: lol. It's amazing how uninformed you are. Putting on a world event, is a little more complicated than a little race on your home trails.

Huge dollars are needed to pay for everything. Think what 4 minutes of track tape costs, medics, marshalls, commisionaires, advertising, bike park rental, trail crew. Takes two years of hosting events in order to be considered to host a World Cup, then you have to host that at least one of those in order to qualified to apply.

People take racing seriously. Remember Minaar blowing up when the start hut was an inch too low and snagged his visor?

Get involved in racing events on the back end before you talk shit about the venues that do put the immense effort, to apply and qualify, then able to deliver a World Cup event.

Track is gnarly. End sprint is good. Shows who has been getting fit. Not just park rats. Riders pedal on plenty of motorway sections of trail.

  • 22 2
@bonfire: but yet the EWS puts on great event after great event with a few new ones every year that are also really good and all have 5-10x the distance of any wc dh track. Good turnouts, good coverage. Putting the rider first because they want good tracks. Venues sell themselves, just showcase them and reap the visitor $'s. Everyone happy. It's not rocket biology bro. Race organizers at a multitude of levels have been doing this forever. Just need to get the suits out of the picture and get passionate bikers calling the shots. F&@k da man

Cairns is SURROUNDED by a Sub Tropical Jungle and a World Heritage area now if you had even been to Cairns you would know this. So there are areas along the track that are not easily accessible let alone safe because it's a f*ckin Jungle with Snakes and huge spiders etc etc.. get it?  @won-sean-animal-chin: Lol. EWS is a consumer event, with some pro's in it.

Don't get me wrong. EWS is baller, some wicked riding in it, some rad tracks, the organizers are absolute legends. It is growing rapidly, now you have EWS qualifying events. Just wait, it is going to end up in a similar spot to the UCI. As it expands, the admin and controls are going get more and more expensive. But it is also growing rapidly because the format works better for people.

Si Patton not passionate enough? How is his BDS going? iXS series? Canada has a pretty lame system with Canada Cup. Especially if you live on the other half of the country.
  • 17 17
@WiseGuy22: when people talk about the best track, they say schladming, champery, MSA, fort bill, Andorra. No one says cairns. That's zero people. The sport is "downhill". End of story. Quit your wingin. Your team couldn't even win on their sh$t course/sad

  • 8 1
@bonfire: Si certainly is and there is a bunch of top riders but it's not "all of the best in the world in the premiere series". We'll all watch the best in the premier series. The sport will only benefit with a system that takes track quality standard level into account. Crankworx does it. EWS will. It's beyond poor organizing when there is no clear advertising on how we can follow the action. Sh&at, even Pb and vital we're struggling to find out what was going on up until it started. Something is broken. It's not like this shit hasn't gone on before. How long do we wait for the UCI to get it together? Do you actually think they will?

If any of the people bitching about Cairns had ridden out at Smithfield MTB park they would know that the place is actually rad.
No it's not a huge mountain with thousands of meters in elevation so it is a shorter course. And yes it the dh trail has got a nasty long pedal at the end. And let's be honest the TV coverage isn't the best due to access issues (very steep, dense rainforest with dangerous and poisonous animals and plants)
But it's steep, mostly very fast and has loads of sweet fun sections that weren't shown on the broadcast (look at the gopro footage for reference). And I'm sure all the riders wouldn't be hating the fact that after a long season of the tour grind to finish off in a god damm paradise on earth that is far North Queensland in what essentially is a backpacker party town.

Regardless of how good the track may or may not be, a lot of what makes sport great is the drama. Unfortunately the way this event was televised did not create any drama, sadly I was never on the edge of my seat. Having this event on the BBC should be quite a big deal in the UK but I can't see anyone who wasn't already into dh coming back to watch any more based on that showing.

 @pbfan08:

We don't have a World Cup in whistler for a few reasons .

1 shutting down the hill for three days is almost impossible . The UCI has some demands we are not willing to meet

2 financial , whistler is already so busy we don't need a World Cup race
( we want one

I will share a rumour .

Creekside is open and has a a separate lift and hill side that we can shit down and control better . Also the creekside village has ample parking for the pits

This is how was are gonna pitch it to try and get a work cup

As far as teams and finances go for North America rounds of World Cup racing goes .

They just need better planning

Have 3 North American rounds back to back then go have the euro rounds

Kinda simple , but the uci is retarded

You need to get out of Australia if you seriously think there's anything good about that shit track

Not trying to rag on Cairns as I'm sure there's good riding to be had there. But I just think for the championship race there could have been a better pick. It's like having a world poker championship in some Indian nation casino/truck stop VS. Las Vegas. I feel like there was some hidden agenda and no one cared to hide it that much.

@mxmtb: @mxmtb: Yeah that all makes sense my main point out of all this just how nonsensical this course selection is. You consistently get told N. America, or really anywhere out side of Europe is not feasible as the Travel expenses are too high for the teams. Then you go and hold arguably the biggest event of the year on the back corner of the world which exponentially increases the costs for the teams. Again I could see that happening if they were travelling to WORLD renowned track, or going somewhere that coverage is spectacular. But none of these things are the case with Cairns, it does nothing but highlight the hypocrisy of these governing bodies. #UCICANEATDICK

Shit for all you british f*ggots that think I have a hard on for America. I couldn't give a shit where they are, there is just no excuse to have a lame track with shitty coverage for THE f*ckING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

@BorisBC35: It's called exhaustion, it could be a result of heavy continuous pedaling, followed by second of blidnes, just enough to bite the dust. Even for the best athletes on the planet, 1 min of enormous pedaling is a KILL, cuz they are DH Racers remember... steep, twisty, technical terrains, drops and no chain to win the race.
  • 5 0
@DC1988: I agree... I did not get out of bed early to watch the best in the world roll down a start gate, around the rock garden and pedal along a flat road. And I'm not going to again at cairns. I don't understand why the camera angles were so bad, last year the whoop section and some other gnarly features were broadcast. 2014 was even better with the rain
  • 6 0
@DC1988: I agree. It was really underwhelming. Family watched with me and I was a bit embarrassed. It's been said already but it felt like half the coverage was of people pedalling up a hill. That last section of the track ruined the whole course.

I think Sam Hill settled this argument before it even started... he finished 6th on an Enduro bike! That probably shouldn't happen in a DH race.

As for the argument "what about all the pro's falling off". That's because they push on the edge of the limit no matter what track, just because people crash doesn't mean it's a great course.

Perhaps the track is the most amazing dh track in the world but the poor coverage didn't really show it to be. I dunno about the commentators where you watched it but here in the UK, they were useless. I don't think either of them have ever watched a dh race.

Race on Creekside without disrupting business. Question though... would it be possible for riders to take lift up from village, ride down a different trail on creekside to spectate, then take lift back up and ride down to whistler? For this to work I think there would need to be a separate lift for racers. But I've never been to that side and have no clue about layout and lifts.

The coverage made this track look shite, they definitely should have chosen better angles.

Still, if cairns pays, cairns gets a round. If the USA wants a round, it just has to find a resort willing to pay. It's nothing to do with the geographical location.

  • 1 0
Nothing stopping them having one in the USA if the organisers want to do it and can make the economics add up.
  • 5 2
Anyone who has walked/ridden that track knows that most people wouldn't even attempt it on a trail or enduro bike. The rock garden is up there with MSA, probably more technical at race speed. The jumps and drops are huge, the "double" at the bottom of the generator is actually like a quad and most riders are only able to double in and double out, and that's even at the WC. The newly named Mick's drop is big enough that it took Sam Hill most of practice before he was even doing it on his enduro. The jump section in the middle of the track is so high speed and high consequence that many riders crash out just in practice each year. And the generator is as steep, long and technical as many other sections on other renowned WC tracks.
It is shorter than other tracks in the world, but until you've ridden them and can compare to the track at Cairns, don't let a sprint to the finish or the difficulty of getting more cameras through the jungle fool you, this is a formidable WC DH track.
  • 3 1
Meh. We've seen enough pictures to know what the track is.The rock garden is technical but short. And yeah, a few features to large for mere mortals. But really, it is a track most pinkbikers could ride no problem. It isn't a difficult track in the sense that pretty much every downhiller could roll it.
  • 1 1
maybe as american you know that part of the problem is the fact that almost nobody in america even knows what world cup downhill racing is. they all think mountain bikes are the $149 walmart pos bikes they tried riding one weekend and then let them collect dust in the garage to go do something easier. but Canadians, they deserve more world cups. sorry gwin your countrymen are too fat, lazy and distracted to care or even know about your sport

The fact that Redbull TV showed Sam Hill's full run on a enduro bike was all I need to see
  • 11 7
Finally, the coverage was not produced or filmed by Redbull TV! I noticed something different the second I started streaming it. After 20 or so riders, I thought it was strange because it was Full HD, no buffering, no "Oops, something went wrong", no drop from full HD to 240 and then back to HD, nearly the full runs. With about 15 riders left, Rob said, "The local promoter has control of the broadcast". Redbull just carried it, nothing more. It reminded me of the Freecaster days, but without the alcohol and swearing.. Redbull TV needs to get their act together.

  • 12 2
How was it beefed up? He even just ran a super deluxe air damper in the rear... Smile
  • 14 2
 @Jack-McLovin:

The fact is that after sector 2, Hill was only 2 and something seconds off Hannah/Bruni, which was considered the rough and technical part of the track. Ironically he lost most time at the 3rd pedally section. There was quite a lot of strong head wind at the start of the race, which eased off mid-race. That might be the reason why he lost time there or might be not - he may have simply burned out and didn't had enough power.

But still - Hill was almost on par with the best guys on the steep and technical part on his Nukeproof. Great run from him.
  • 5 1
@velio84: on the Australian coverage they had Nigel Page commentating with some other guy, he spoke to Hill after his run then when on comentating. He said Sam was suffering a bit and had to back off because the smaller bike was harder on his arms at race pace, and the track felt "slower" than in practice.

What about all the other runs, was it purely because Pompoms run was so dubious that they noticed?

I wonder if now the whole event will be scrutinised or if the UCI will bury their heads to save face.

I think we know the answer. They'll bury their heads.
I wonder how many separate timing systems they have? They said they checked the back up, curious whether they have more than one back up. And obviously how often mistakes can occur? When riders can be separated by less than a 10th of a second it does make you wonder...
  • 6 0
I can't belive the timing is correct. If you look at Timed Training, Pompon had a 4.06 and Miranda had a 4.26. At the Race they are tied at 4.10. It's pretty unlikely that Pompon was 4 seconds slower in her world champs run, than in practice. Also Hills timing, who startet right after Pompon, was at least 6 seconds off Wink

I wouldn't mind getting a bit more detail about Myriam Nicole's timing snafu and how they were able to still measure it to 9/100th of a second. She was faster by 2 secs in the second split and the timing mistake apparently happened at the first split.
  • 3 2
 @asauvage : UCI has a secondary/back-up timing system.
  • 5 1
@kwapik: I am aware of this, i heard the UCI "explanation" like everybody else here. Smile Just saying that it would help to understand what is the +/- tolerance of said back up system, when there is so much at stake. Obviously the system wasn't fully automated if it took Myriam's complaint to the commissaire to realize there was a mistake, and if there is an element of manual/human interaction it may be less precise - maybe not precise to the 9/100th.
  • 4 0
The backup timing is a MANUAL system, per UCI official! No way they'd be accurate enough if it came to splitting hairs.

Now I wonder how many other runs have accuracy errors...and how long it's been going on unnoticed. Remember Rachel Atherton beating all the men in the speed trap? Gee always thought it was a computer error.

geezus christ, stop the whinging about the track. Enough already. It was still a race. Learn some history, Cairns changed the face of downhill when they first held the Worlds there 21 years ago. The riders then could not believe it. Too used to gunning down fireroads or grass slopes. And this track blew their minds, sure things have changed since then but this year was an anniversary of '96. Next year it'll be somewhere else. But not in USA, cos no one there can be fucked organising it. Granted tho' the coverage was shit.

  • 6 0
I think it's more to do with the camera angles and showing too much of the flat section at the end. It is a pretty hard venue to film and a lot of the good stuff is not shown. I've ridden both tracks and In my opinion, Cairns is a harder and a better track to ride beside the flat bit at the end.
  • 3 0
@eesto: I will never compare any WC DH track with another WC track......personally like that variety of tracks .....that will show who's the overall best rider ;-). Leogang is fun to ride not really hard track, that's for sure...but maybe more friendly for spectators and camera guys (no jungle, no snakes, spiders, etc.. Big Grin ) don't you think :-).....RedbullTV have to do something... WC racing is for spectators ( crowds and sofa sitting guys/girls watching tv )....and coverage like this is just an insult to the work of all guys working on WC venue and also riders !!!!
You know what....I've never been in Cairns, but track (upper part) looks sick !!....bottom looks like xc, that's pity.......
  • 5 0
@artoBP: Leogang is easier to film and for spectators to get around for sure, because of chair lift access and not in a jungle etc. The venue and crowd here are fantastic and I just don't get the hate for the track in Cairns beside the last 200m of course, it is fun to ride and tricky to master. It is 100% the coverage that needs to be addressed.
I highly recommend anyone to visit and ride in Cairns because you will be pleasantly surprised, Just don't come in summer.
  • 11 0
I've noticed on some of the PB an Vital RAW footage throughout the season that they do a much better job of picking camera angles and positions to make it look like an actual steep DH track. I'm guessing that's the difference between hand held and ground cameras? the angles flatten out the track.maybe why that's why this track looks not so good? but, what ever .

@kronze779: no drugs, and it is fair that the Australians saw this as a great race. 2 of your legends doing well and, what? 5 men in the top 12 on home soil? That is a solid result and if that were any country's outcome they would defend even Sea Otter as a great venue for WC DH (don't you think so @Whipperman ?).

That said, I can only judge based on what I saw and heard. The coverage showed basically two crux moves and one of them was staying high through an off camber slight right hander to carry speed into the next bit - honestly not the most thrilling even if it was hard to do. Warner is usually good for a dozen or more runs where he spends the entire lap shouting and Claudio has to raise his voice and talk over him. Here, there was maybe a handful of runs like that.
  • 3 0
@Whipperman: No, because I don't think anyone actually considers that a DH race. Sea Otter is a party that happens to have "racing".
  • 1 0
@AaGro: my comment was not a criticism in anyway. Just an observation.
Americans are far more patriotic than every other nation so its quite astounding that there are so few representing... or wanting to.

Anyway the Brits have been at the top for a while now, its time we let someone else have a go Wink
  • 9 0
just in: Miller in gold Nicole in Silver and Hannah in bronze for women's
seems there is a mistake in the primary timing. duhhh.. UCI sucks

it makes me think, can we trust any of the results ? seriously the UCI is taking dozens of thousands dollars to "organize" the race and they fail the most important task : timing the racers
  • 6 1
@zede: They have a Backup Timing as their said, which will be checked too. So i would say yes we can.
  • 1 0
@MSVF: is the backup Timing as accurate as the regular one? When the difference between 1st and 2nd is 0.3s it is legitimate to ask.

Damn, I have been looking forward to watching Gwin race all week and I watch for hours and it cuts out right before his run.
WTF?!?!
  • 1 0
I wonder if he had a clean run or if he rode down without a tire again or something?
  • 1 2
Oh man it was like 5 minutes just replay it like I did after all it's Redbull TV right?
  • 7 0
Listen everyone... the amount of vitriol up on this comments board is amazing. It all comes from the fact that we're very passionate about this sport. Our sport. It's not FIFA soccer or the NFL and it doesn't get that kind of coverage or money pumped into it. But we know, all of us know, that this is one of the most intense, daring and exciting sports that humans have ever created. Let's stop hating on a venue that few of us have ever ridden. There certainly is some difficulty to it as I saw many of the world's best going down on this course. Just ask Rachy box. The problem is the quality of the coverage. But given the fact that it's in a jungle, it's in a remote part of the world, and we don't have to pay $100+ a month for cable service just to get to see our beloved sport it's not too bad. The people that work hard to bring the coverage out of these places I'm sure are doing their absolute best. They love the sport as we do. We have Rabid Rob Warner and Calm Claudio as our commentators. They work extremely well together. Yes we should contact RB tv etc. and let them know we need better camera angles. They need to up the ante. I agree. But us hating on one another simply because we don't get enough of what we live to see is ridiculous.
  • 8 2
These Aussie tracks aren't too friendly to Canadians. E. Batty's gash is pure pain and worry for her career. As for Finn... This day will be a chip in his shoulder to not take things for granted a consistent podium contender in the seniors.

The new "Maxxis Minion DNF" tire strikes again... Really bad luck for Greg in his last 2 races.

Timing, Timing, Timing..... We don't need no UCI let the mutha fu(ker burn!!!! Terribble timing, terrible coverage, especially for the womens race. Why does anyone still pay these dip$hits???
  • 6 0
Bummed for Mik. He wanted it so bad and to lose by that margin is so cruel. It could've been the Cinderella story that was Greg in SA a few years ago.
  • 5 0
What the hell happened to Myriam? She didn't look like she'd been down (no dust on her and she was still pushing like mad) but 44 seconds down.

For any UK people you can watch this on the BBC sport app where the commentary is by Nigel page and an Australian guy but on the Red bull website The commentary is done by Rob Warner and cloudio
  • 9 0
I'm watching it on BBC and the commentary isn't bad to be honest - it's not like those chumps they get in for Rampage each year. I'm hoping lots of people tune in to show BBC and others there is an appetite for the sport, although I do prefer Claudio and Rob. What is annoying is the camera angles - a little too much coverage of the pedally sections rather than technical ones for me...
  • 4 0
Feel I should watch it on BBC just to represent and show mainstream channel that mtb is viable to air.
On the other hand rob and Claudio's commentary is where i want to be.
I've compromised and left the sky box on BBC and watch it on redbull Smile

Miranda freaking Miller for the win! Everyone from Squamish always knew she's fast, great to see her put the winning run together.

  • 5 1
From all the interviews I heard. Riders liked it. They all said it was challenging and going to be a good contest. I think South Australia should get one or maybe back to Thredbo.
  • 7 1
So, Nicole is slower by 0.1s with a "manual" backup... I guess they could not change the world champion.
  • 2 0
No, they could but that would be a massive embarrassment for the UCI. So let's give her a second instead by the smallest or margins. I don't want to take the win away from Miller, after all this is racing, but I can't help but feel the is something is wrong with this situation and perhaps a few riders have been cheated by the UCI.
  • 3 0
Was up past 2AM in western NC watching this race! My wife thinks I am crazy but the race was worth it to watch live! Aaron you have plenty of fans around here! Don't want to hear that Americans wouldn't attend a UCI Dh race. Bring it to the dirty south and watch the fans show up! Some WC guys training here anyways! Luca - Your day is coming man! So cool seeing a local rider in the World Champs!
  • 11 5
Tracy ! WHY YOU DIDN'T GET UP QUICKER ??!!!
  • 12 1
That she got up at all is impressive. Flip to spine bounce off a root, isn't easy to shake off.
  • 11 1
She must have been devastated thinking she had already lost it while tangled in the vine, doubly devastated once she finished. Four seconds over Tahnee in the first split
  • 22 1
Winded, mildly concussed, in shock... We might not ever know. The fact she got up at all and finished her run is impressive enough on its own.
  • 7 0
@j-t-g: the single fact that she got up at all was totally MAD respect. But i think she probably was so pissed at herself when she crushed was the reason why she didn't get up quicker (maybe asked herself what the fk is going on right now with the track that you are so familiar with?) Can we ask Wyn TV to track down what was going on ???
  • 7 0
 Sick Mick!!!!!!!!
  • 2 0
A quote from Tracey lifted from The Cairns Post:
“Someone said ‘why didn’t you get up faster?’ but I hit my head, so I didn’t realise I was down,” / “I guess there was a bit of disappointment laying in the vines but I didn’t think about it for too long.”
  • 2 0
Why could we not watch this LIVE or in replay in Canada? Given that on-line access is global? This is exactly why I am hoping EWS kicks the snot out of the UCI/RedBull corporate BS.

2) 29' are dead HAHAHA ....where's the advantage of bigger wheels ??
3) Sam Hill ......is the real KING
  • 2 0
@artoBP: 2) "bigger wheels" won the Junior Men
  • 2 1
@kwapik: ....maybe Finn's mistake did :-)....maybe batter luck, maybe batter rider.....still it's about rider that's great news don't you think ?
  • 9 8
Watched with my 8yr old daughter, after she said she'd like to ride that track. Nuff said. Not taking away the fact she is a good rider, but she's 8! she should be saying 'FUCK RIDING THAT, THAT TRACK, IS INSANE'. The last pedal straight was hard to watch and in no way a good representation of the sport. Shame. Good to see it breaking out of online and broadcast on BBC red button though.
  • 18 7
First. Your 8 year old shouldn't be saying swears. Don't say swears. Second, its good to see some fitness come in to play. We get so much flak for being a gravity sport, a tiny bit of pedaling shouldn't be a race ruiner for top racers. I'd much rather see this, where the top 5 are separated by seconds, than Leogang, where the top 20 are all within 5 sec of each other.

Also, do you really think an 8 year old's judgement based on what she saw on tv is what makes or breaks a course?
  • 11 7
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: She didn't really say it, i wrote that for comedy value. you have ruined the illusion. sigh.
  • 4 1
@YouHadMeAtDrugs: I agree that fitness should play a part, and a bit of pedalling should form part of DH as long as it is balanced with more technical terrain. However, I think the issue here is the coverage, where there was far too many shots of racers flat out pedalling large sections of the course - it's dull to watch and doesn't demonstrate the skill, bravery or excitement of DH well.
  • 4 0
75th to 6th must be some kind of record. Sam Hill nearly had the hot seat all day.
  • 3 0
Hill 6th with ews bike!!! Incredibile... This is a show of how high are the limits of modern enduro bikes... And the incredible skills of Hill.. legend
  • 3 2
All the hype building up to people predicting Sam taking the win which was unrealistic, but not many comments about the absolutely phenomenal result of 6th place now?

There are enough comments about how crap the course is, I have heard peoples opinions that are actually there that it is a lot gnarlier in person than in video, but obviously it is no val di sole, champery etc and probably falls short of leogang etc - a shame really.

I would have loved to see Mick take the win though but at least Loic has saved his season!
  • 3 0
Word is there was strong headwinds at the start of the race down by the flat pedal.maybe made a difference maybe didnt, but that result is good. He is so on point with his riding, watch the replay I dont think anyone can rail lines with thay kinda accuracy. A true legend. Wish he still had the burn to race more
  • 3 2
So, the big question. Where in hell was the 5 place podium? Invented in Cairns in 96 to honour Cadel Evans. Could have had a 5 place podium here today and then Troy calls up Sam for schooling all the new dudes (cos he did) and there and then the UCI can take the credit for the 6 place podium AND Sam Hill gets honoured in what will be his last DH race ever. What a lost moment.
  • 3 0
Friggin loic bruni. Of all the races to show up and win and snatch the win from Mik. He's almost a surprise any time he wins in a disruptive way.

  • 2 3
Gutted for minaar. Maybe use total time in all tracks to determine the world champ next year. Just like it was a year long enduro race. That way punctures would not be so catastrophic and mistakes can be fixed a little.
  • 6 2
Do you feel as bad for other's who flatted today? Tire pressure, type, reinforcements, line choice are calculated decisions at that level and same deal for every rider. These factors also makes the sport more dramatic to watch. Like Gwin coming back to win the World Cup this season (despite flatting out one track) or the time he won Leogang without a chain!
  • 1 0
@senatorsrule65: just hate to see someone waste a whole year training and putting everything on the line to end up like that.... just thinking out loud that so much carbon this, multiple suspension controls, kashima that, and can't keep air in those tyres. Back to the basics. To make it clear, I'm every dh and xc racer fan they are heroes for me.
