Mega props to the thunder from down under #flatlivesmatter. Correct if I'm wrong but has anyone ever won the overall World Cup series in multiple discipline's ? If so it was not under today's type of competition level. True legend!

I've got to wonder if Sam Hill sees the flat pedals love affair comments and just wonders why people care. At the end of the day it's just a tool to move the cranks around and around.

As a massive hill fan when he changed to enduro i had my doubts, the whole flat pedal thing and not looking like he lives in the gym. You see Graves and Rude as machines and that the ews demands fitness and pedaling i didnt really think he could do it based on that. I take my hat off to him he has proven me and many other i am sure wrong. I dont think he ever was off the pace in dh he was just bored. I dothink as far as bike skill and natural talent for riding tech terrain he is the best we have ever seen. at the end off the day hes a fucking legend and an inspiration to myself and many others. congrats Sam and team.

@WAKIdesigns: I would have done the same thing mate. The thing I also like about guys like ratboy and Hill is that are down to earth normal blokes. have chatted with Sam before, they say you should not meet your hereos you will be disappointed but that was far from the case, hes a top bloke.

@phdotd: Why didn’t Sam ride a full-fledged DH bike? Because he’s SamDamnHill, that’s why. A true honch. Okay, sure, Cairns isn’t exactly Val di Sole and, yes, the whole riding your enduro whip in the World Champs DH event has been done before (Jared Graves raced his Yeti SB66c to a third place finish at Pietermaritzburg in 2013),

Talking about Samuel Hill's choice of pedals is old and boring. I'd say flat pedals had as much to do with Samuel winning the overall title as Ergonomic grips had to do with Oton winning this weekend.
  • 7 8
@lccomz: Hmm... It had a lot to do with Sam winning the overall title. He won the overall title on flat pedals
  • 5 5
@thewho07: indeed and that Daily lost the title because of clipless pedals on whistler stage 1
  • 6 3
@lccomz: no need to hate kid
  • 17 6
I actually think that it is disrespectful to Hill to say that he wins because of flat pedals. The guy is an amazing bike handler and has incredible fitness. I'm sure the flat pedals fit in there somewhere, but he wins because he handles his bike amazingly well, stays healthy, and works his ass off. It's a PBer fantasy that they can put flats on and be a legend too. Put your flat pedal money towards a lesson instead.
  • 3 1
@jasdo: I think you'll find many moons ago Hill himself coined the phrase "flat pedals win medals", so don't get too judgemental on these guys!

Stoked for you Sam!
  • 21 10
 Five EWS years.
38 races.
In each race, U21, Masters and Elite rankings.
Divided in man & woman rankings.
38x3=76. 76x2=228. So 228. The three best rider in each category wins a medal.
It gives us 684 medals.
Acording to his wikipedia page, Sam Hill's flat pedals won a total of 4 medals (two 1st and two 2nd places).
Clipless pedals won the 680 other medals.
So yes, sometimes, it happens that (only Sam Hill's) flat pedals win medals.
Sam is a great champion, a very humble and down-to-earth guy, I met him at the Megavalanche this year.
But please slow down with that flat pedal thing, it's getting boring.
Unless you want to talk about clipless pedals wins in World Cup Downhill?
  • 6 1
@etga6657: if you want to use statistics then your question is "how often does a rider on flats not win models" (negative hypothesis). So you can only look at events where someone raced in flats.
  • 2 0
@iamamodel: Pretty sure he didn't use this statistic to start a new one, just to put an end to this bullshit once and for all.Like said before boring.Peace
  • 2 1
@thewho07: it has little to do with whether flat padels are faster, it has to do with the dogma that clipless are superior and EVERYONE should ride them if they consider themselves serious riders. Which is a misleading bullsht stopping many riders from progressing and leaving them riding scared and crash often. Sam Hill is undoubtedly the person who got flat pedal/ shoe interface technology and ergonomy to where it is today. He continues to inspire people to piss on peer pressure and try flats.

This has been a super impressive year-long campaign by Sam. The stats, if they ever show up, would tell a large part of the story. I can’t remember a race where Sam suffered a mechanical. I presume he still has Jaycee his mechanic, who is a wizard with a bike. Good team management and support from Pagey and Chain Reaction and he was the most consistent rider in all conditions all year. People talk about Sam’s otherworldly bike handling skills, which is undisputed, but he’s also a smart strategic thinker. And let’s also recognize Cecile who dominated this year against some very strong competition – a true champion in every way.
  • 5 0
You're so right about the strategic thing. Finsle, much like Whistler was an example of that - set a big margin at the start to heap pressure on everyone else and make them take risks and burn themselves out, ride safe but slowly "boil the frog" all the way through. Classic strategic technique most frequently seen in boxing.

A few big DH world cup names in the race this weekend, including MINNAR, SHAW, VERGIER, PIERRON, BRYCELAND to name a few. With VERGIER getting the best result out of all, finishing in 22nd. Goes to show the skill and fitness of all the Enduro boys and also how good Sam Hill really is.

Enduro riders ride track better "blind" than DH riders who are used to analysing every line rather than riding something as they see it. This is why I think Enduro is a better test of a bike handler than DH.
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: lol more like whoever gets there earliest and trains the most. Sorry i hate to break it to you but noone competitive rides ews blind
  • 1 0
@russthedog: I'm not saying they ride it totally blind but compared to a DH rider they don't know every inch of the track.
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: getting there before the event and training is an issue for them

To that guy that took his comment down about Sam Hill slowing down and couldn't compete in the world cup... I think Sam Hill dialed it down in the world cup intentionally, that happens when you get huge season ending injuries, get married, and have a couple of kids. I think if he was still willing to put all that on the line, he'd be battling the other top riders at every race STILL. My hat is off to him for slowing it down, and doing what he loves to do, competing and be a family man. It's nice to see his family at his races... SAM HILL...CHAMP! and man of the year!!!!

Damn, good weekend. Damien win, Hill takes overall... and another 2nd for MM Razz
  • 4 0
Why do Jared Graves get so much mechanicals? Is it just bad luck or is it a problem with the Spesh team's mechanics? It's weird because after last season and this year, I would've been more surprised if Graves had an issue-free race. You see guys like Sam Hill, Adrien Dailly or Greg Callahan who rarely get mechanicals. I don't believe they're just consistently lucky.

  • 2 1
@mh731: Dunno what the hate is for Schurter is - he's dominated at his level and is supremely skilled in a bike. You can only beat the people around you after all... See also T-mo, Vouilloz, Rachel Atherton, etc.

I'm not sure Hill is the greatest of all time, but he's certainly up there, particularly the impact he's made in raising the level of DH across the board and making people realise just how fast you can go on a bike!
  • 1 0
@slimboyjim: Because there is a misconception that XC is 'easy' eg. endurance and no skill. The world cup XC tracks nowadays can be super technical, plus combine that with uphills and riding the thing on 100mm suspension / hardtails and semi-slicks and you have to be a great rider to succeed.
