Bizet should have been a little higher but at the end of the day, Sorge deserved to win. Obviously Zink's flip was huge and had he stomped his fronty he would have been in 1st with Kurt back to the top. People here are acting like Sorge's flip wasn't impressive or something and I don't understand it. Builds a lip in the dark the night before and without hitting it once flips is clean.

  • 8 0
@cliffdog: no, he deserved to score higher than 9th but win? Not a chance Bizet took relatively easy route down the hill and did go near the gnar and steep chutes that Sorge rode
  • 20 2
This is not the diamond series people. Rampage is about going BIG. Sorge's line was all big drops and big air, with some flip tricks on those big features. I respect Bizet for doing a double flip, but his line was nowhere near as big and that's what the judges were rewarding. People have been bitching about this for years, and for once I think they actually scored it like they should.
  • 8 1
 Bizet got Norbed.
  • 8 1
@konarrider2007: This man!!! Rheeder and semeneuk always seem to get overscored. I mean T mac´s run, was craaaazy and last year I think too, and he always always get´s underscored. He was one of the few to put in a top to bottom effortless flawless run packed with tricks and technical stuff.
  • 7 2
I think they just should finally decide what they want Rampage to be. Either it is a slopestyle event, in which case Bizet's rund should have been scored much much higher, or it's an event with a strong focus on big mountain riding, line choice and speed, in which case runs like that of Bas van Steenbergen, the Claw and Lacondeguy should have been scored much higher.
  • 1 1
@GnarAZ: cased his hap. Blew out his shoulder. Kids rad. Cant wait to see him ride next year

@FuzzyL: please dont forget T-Mac, why does everyone forget this guy! He had the most f*cking amazing run and got 9th. At least top 5!!!
  • 6 1
@FuzzyL: well it's not a slopestyle event. Cedric was right.

Tricks need knocked down too 10%. Like difficulty and air/amplified need to be higher.

35% - line difficulty
35% - air and amplitude
20% - fluidity
10% - Tricks and style

@SnowshoeRider4Life: maybe the build time is too long... the hole face is bermed up and full of walkways. Be cool to see who would shine if the face was more raw.
  • 2 1
@SnowshoeRider4Life: But it was a slopestyle event last year. At least the judging seemed to indicate that. This year, line choice seemed to play a bigger role, but you had to throw some serious tricks in. Still, I don't get how or example Lacondeguy's first run somehow failed to fit that bill...

However, judging just seemed flawed to me this year. Even if I assume that I simply don't get some of the criteria, I'll never be able to comprehend how anyone would say there was no real improvement from van Steenbergen's first run to his second.
  • 3 0

  • 8 1

  • 96 0
Tom did put a foot down in his run. This is probably why it wasn't scored higher. That Caveman was freeride as fuck though!
  • 21 2
I also thought about the foot- but I don't think that justifies only a .33 increase in score. There's something off because guys like zink and Tom are taking huge risks and not getting rewarded, while guys like Kyle put down an absolutely flawless run with no bobbles and doesnt get rewarded either. That being said sorge's run was amazing and I'm stoked for him, and less crashes obviously means the comp is getting better and better. So fun to watch- thanks pinkbike!

Zink's first run was the best in rampage history. Two flips, a three, and the steepest-gnarliest line anyone has ever seen.
  • 3 1
we got the metric system over here and all, i know, but overshooting a turn after the steep chute= -2, landing the biggest flip on the backwheel = -2, total =96Pt. !!??
  • 18 1
no doubt. the judges really effed themselves by scoring that so low. should have been ~95 and a point or two higher than Sorge's, imho. See how many runs they had to put in the high 80s, within partial point of each other because of that?
  • 35 1
When you look at Zink's second run, you can see there was still lots of room for improvement, which he did throw in. Had he landed that front flip he definitely would've won. However I do still think Zink's was the better run.
  • 11 3
I agree, I think Zink should have won. But hats off to all of the riders for putting it all on the line. This was the best Rampage in terms of sheer size and tricks IMHO.

  • 8 2
Sorge had two flips, a tuck flip, a suicide no hander, and a collection of the slowest sexiest whips I've ever seen. Zink definitely won on gnar but Sorge had him beat everywhere else.
  • 23 0
@src248: all you guys are doing is re-inforcing the idea that rampage is becoming a slopestyle event. If it's going to be sold as a "big mountain freeride" event it should be judged as just that. Yeah Sorge is super smooth and his whips are sexy but from a big mountain perspective, his line was bland. Bizet's tricks were out of this world, but again his line was nowhere near what the other riders had. So I think the judges and the organization need to rethink what they're scoring. Did Zink get scored lower because he was too GNARLY and too FREE RIDE, and not slope enough?? Did Bizet get scored lower for being too SLOPE and not enough free ride?? Did Sorge win because he was a nice mix of both?? If so, then rampage isn't big mountain free ride anymore in my opinion, it has become "big mountain freestyle" or "big mountain slopestyle." For my money, and for my understanding of rampage being freeride I feel Zink had the best run today and one of the best ever.
  • 7 1
This is the problem with "judged" events. Rampage is an amazing and awesome event, but the results are subjective.
In world cup downhill: clocks don't lie, and there is NO doubt who the winner is.
  • 85 14
Such as last year Bizet has been screwed by jury... 2 back, 1 front, and 1 double back, and you are just 9th? Killing me... if you are not from North America you can’t pretend to win...
  • 51 7
Tricks don’t play that much pull in results unless it’s something extremely big like Sorge or Sorge
  • 14 18
flag clarky78 (Oct 27, 2017 at 11:59) (Below Threshold)
I agree. Ain't nobody winning except for the standard 4 or 5 riders. I reck9n they decide who stands a chance to win beofr the event. And to say tricks don't count?! Are you freaking kidding?!??! The DH racers can't win, only the people pulling tricks will get good scores.
  • 22 3
@clarky78: They definitely count, but if you look at the guys you generally win, it comes down to flipping and spinning something massive. Anton could have triple flipped the last jump and it would have only changed his score by so much.
  • 103 4
@clarky78: Rampage is a big mountain event, it should be ALL about the lines. We need to see gnarly shit, steep, sketchy FAST riding. We already have way too many slopestyle events and I for one coulnt care less about a guy pulling bmx tricks on a mountain bike. That stuff can be practiced in a foam pit and repeated on the hill over and over again..gets boring real quick.Show me guys shredding their bikes and I get all excited !
  • 18 2
@tuumbaq: this has been discussed as nauseam in the lead up but I think you just made the point for freeride better than anyone yet.
Rampage should be raw, wild and fresh. Not practiced, set tricks.
IMO the judges did a good job this year; rewarding big mountain riding.
  • 6 7
@BrantHavro: men we are talking about a double back, a front and 2 back. It’s not big for you? Sorte as massive air, but not the most difficult line as well. And come on, Nell score a 90? The way the rampage is rated has to change.
  • 6 2

Spot on TD.

Tho I was just a little surprised that additional technical tricks only added like .33 to a first run. But overall I’m ok (not that anyone cares) with how the top 10 ended up.

Great event again. Thanks RB and riders for showing us the limits!
  • 7 0
@tuumbaq: Agreed! Tricks are cool and all, but a big juicy drop into a gnarly steep chute is infinitely better at this type of event.
  • 1 0
@tuumbaq: I totally agree but that doesn't mean his score was bollocks. If however if we're a big mountain event, then there is not much point doing more than 1 run. A second run is only for mistakes in that case. Normally you would only add more tricks on the second run. Hence the guys basically get the same score for both runs anyway.
  • 1 0
 Word @tuumbaq:
  • 3 1
@BrantHavro: "Tricks don’t play that much pull in results unless it’s something extremely big like Sorge or Sorge" funny you and many say this ( @tuumbaq ), because if you don't consider the tricks, but just the line choice, Sorge isn't even in the top 3.
Judges wanted to reward someone that had already won rampage and that had a good line and good tricks, so they had to make their choice between Zink, Sorge and Semenuk. They chose Sorge and that's it.

@SnowshoeRider4Life: Perfect answer to a dumb comment
  • 8 1
@SnowshoeRider4Life: But in case it isnt slopestyle, the claw should have scored way higher i think. plus semenuk also had a better score than rheeder ? and finally tom vas score didnt improve with that caveman ...
I also think the judges screwed up big time here. About Bizet, i think he should have gotten 5th or 6th. Oh right, and finally i think Zink should have won instead of Sorge
  • 3 0
@TomasPT: I disagree with most of that.

Vansteenbergen stopped and put a foot down before his double drop.

T-mac should have been over claw still but above rheeder and semenuk.

And zink/sorge. I think the judges thought kurt edged zink on amplitude and fluidity. That's the only way I can make sense of that. Zink had the gnarliest line but the only huge feature was the one drop. I wanted zink to win, and that flat drop flip was bonkers but man I just don't know. Tricks were basically dead even too.
  • 2 2
@SnowshoeRider4Life: seems like nobody knows what gets you a high score besides having the name sorge. Do double back flips, front flips, 360's, etc and you won't get a high score. Do gnarly lines without tricks, also a low score. Do a combo of both? Also a low score. im sure if someone runs a same exact line with the same exact tricks 2 years in a row, the points will vary 3-8 points in those 2 runs over the course of 2 years. The judges pull the scores out of there ass. A year or two ago, the scores almost reached a hundred, this year they didn't pass 95, most were under 90. It's weird

Seems like the judges were favoring more of a "big mountain" kind of line and maneuvers, rather than "slopestyle" type of maneuvers. That is why Bizet received such a low score.

Is it really that hard to comprehend?

  • 15 2
Tom got robbed- he didn't need to win but that move off the cliff was huge and only a .33 upgrade. Yeah, he stalled out a little, but these judges---anyone else feel they should have to explain their scoring?
  • 4 0
 He put his foot down
  • 1 0
@Globu: unfortunately true. Even as I watched his run, it was like "ah shame, he put his foot down, that'll cost him."

Zink's first run WAS incredible. But you could see there were some technical errors in it, and in spite of the difficulty that was what cost him. His second run, on the other hand, was absolutely perfect. But he rolled the dice on the last feature. It was gutting to see, but that is the way it goes.

Obviously, talking as an armchair critic, I can't jump a even a small double.
  • 13 0
Sorge’s and Zinks runs were on another level, both of their backflips were massive. Nobody threw their tricks off the size of feature those two did.
  • 12 0

PEF rode the gnarliest shoot with so much speed and skill, he made Zink and straight look hesitant! Great rampage....
  • 9 1
I thought the judging was the best they've had. Sure some of the lower positioned riders scores could have been a little different. Bizet could have deserved some more points. But he didn't have the big freeride feature like others. I think the top scores were pretty accurate. Was a little surprised semenuk got to 3rd at one point and surprised Eathan got a 90. But pretty much was only a matter of a couple of points at most for the top guys. Props to the judges. Tough job!! Sorge deffo the winner and well scored compared to second and 3rd and that's the main thing.

You know what, this is the way best panel of judges there could be, Builders, riders and legends. These are definitely the right people to be judging the event. Maybe what needs to change is the judging straight after the run. I believe it could be a better idea to keep the score to them selves until all the runs are complete and then reveal who got what. At least that way they are not backed in to a corner by a high score early riser and have room to adjust their views. Then second runs and repeat the same judging format.
  • 6 0
The biggest problem is a camera views!
If so many people keep saying RB IS NOT A SS - so why do we have nice camera views only on a trick kickers???? If we have to see HOW MASSIVE DROPS are doing the top riders, why do we get those shitty camera views where the rider is a 10 pixels on a screen while sending a 17m drop with a no hander??? Just put the f... cameras next to the edge on a biggest drops, show us how crazy and how scary they are.
Only with a photographer's material we can understand what was going on. But a day later!
So many words were about THE MOST STEEPEST LINE OF RB. And what? Does anybody saw at least one shot where it was shown fine?

Dude wtf go back and watch both of Ethan Nells runs. He bumps up 20 point by adding a flat spin and a pretty gnar suicide but lands crappy on his last jump. How did he get boosted 20 points. Tom Van Steenbergen does a caveman (a first in Rampage) and keeps the rest of his run the same and only gets 0.33 points added to his previous score. something is fishy here.

I have an 8 meter drop on my track that I built. It's scary every time. These guys wouldn't give it a 2nd thought. They all win. Not a fan of judged events but i love rampage because it's epic & they pushing the limits of gravity with tyre traction and balls out guts. Ha...I'm 45 yrs old tho

No man, I don't condone domestic violence.
  • 1 4
whats with the black stantions on some of the fox 40s?
  • 8 2
Black anodized is the new Kashima.
  • 1 1
Fox uses black on their "performance" series. Also, they're re-inventing marzocchi and they are the same chassis as the 40 with possible different internals, and the black stancions. So you're probably seeing Zokes when you look at a blacked out fox 40.
  • 2 1
@Trudeez: i felt like i saw a few different combos. i thought i saw orange fox lower with black stantions, i saw full marzocchi looking setup and i saw orange lowers with kashima stantions. i would have figured they would have been a bit consistent among their riders
  • 2 0
 @adrennan: ahh, good eye. Interesting.
  • 3 1
Fox is trying super hard to make people think black isn’t as good as kashima.
  • 1 1
@adrennan: the only factory 40 that wasnt kashima was rheeders. Special event gets special stuff. Decals were one off as well.
  • 1 1
 @jflb: its not.
  • 1 1
 @Trudeez: no they're not.
