Live Updates

Run One

8:34 AM PDT: Cam Zink announces he won't be competing due to an injured shoulder.

9:04: Currently a little breezy, looks like a wind hold will push the start back to 11am PST.

9:35: Bas Van Steenbergen will not be competing due to a crash yesterday.

11:10: 26-year-old Szymon Godziek will be the first rider to drop in.

11:15: Syzmon crashes hard after going way too big on a backflip tuck no hander, but still gets up and finishes his line with style. Score: 31.00

11:21: Brendan Fairclough stomps his super-technical line, including his drop off 'The Rock', a canyon gap, and a backflip. "That was kind of the perfect run for me - I'm so stoked." Score: 67.66

11:26: Vinnie T (Vincent Tupin) crashes mid-line after getting bucked off a cliff, sending his bike tumbling down the canyon.

11:32: Rampage freshman DJ Brandt starts strong, with a 360 off the start drop, and a clean run through his insanely steep chute, but cases a double lower down on his line. The same jump caused trouble for Rheeder and Andreu in practice. DJ finishes his run, tossing a couple backflips along the way. Score: 33.33

11:41: Remy Metailler goes for another Rampage course speed record - no tricks, but smooth and fast.

11:46: Reed Boggs throws down a strong run: 360 off the start drop, open loop, big double drop, suicide no-hander off a step down, and a mini-flip to finish. Score: 59.66

11:49: Adolf Silva's mom is a BASE jumper. True story.

11:50: Adolf Silva has a perfect start to his run, stomping massive drop after massive drop, but crashes on a Superman seat grab near the bottom after missing his pedal. Score: 41.00

11:55: Andreu Lacondeguy puts a wild top-to-bottom run in the bag to take the lead. Highlights: flat spin 450, backflip, superman backflip, flatspin 360 lookback. Score: 87.33

12:00: Jordie Lunn throws a cork 720 early in his run, and sticks multiple uber-techy sections of his line, but gets hung up mid-run after skipping his ravine gap. He looks at Fairclough's steep chute, but skips it and walks down the rest of the course. Lunn has reportedly been sick for the past few days.

12:08: Graham Agassiz is still recovering from a broken scapula, but gets in a smooth run. He goes too deep on a stepdown and loses speed for a step up lower on the course. Score: 50.00

12:13: Tom van Steenbergen starts with a 360 off the start drop, and then lands an absolutely enormous flat drop back flip. Score: 84.66

12:21 Tyler McCaul gets tossed over a berm, but is able to get his feet underneath him and emerges unscathed. He hits a couple more features, but then dismounts and hikes back to the bottom.

12:27: This is Kyle Strait's 13th Red Bull Rampage - he's attended all of them. "If you're not out here trying to win, I don't see why you're out here."

12:29: Strait puts down a classic run - no hesitation, steep moves, a suicide no hander off a big step down, and then a fully extended Superman. Score: 76.66

12:32: Carson Storch starts with a 360, tosses a big backflip off a stepdown, but then runs out of speed to get up to the midpoint of his run. Instead of throwing it away, he still goes for a gigantic 360. He lands it, but was slightly over-rotated and ends up crashing.

12:40: Thomas Genon's run is super smooth and fluid, with a 360 to start, several large stepdowns, a backflip, and a suicide no hander. Score: 78.66

12:47: Wow. Brett Rheeder nails his line - oppo 360 to start, a big double drop, and a ridiculously huge flat backflip. Also a regular 360, and a backflip one foot can to finish. "I've never flat drop flipped something that big in my life. Not even close... That was exactly what I wanted to do." New Leader. Score: 89.66

12:55: Brandon Semunuk starts strong, but a botched cork 720 mid run halts his progress. He rides down, using it as a chance for one more practice run. Score: 36.00

13:01: Local hero Ethan Nell hits his line perfectly. A big ol' stepdown back flip, a nose manual down a steep slope for extra bonus points, a suicide no-hander off a huge drop, and a flat spin 360 to finish it all off. Score: 86.33

13:10: Defending champ Kurt Sorge gets in a clean run, with what's likely the biggest drop of the day (the same one Adolf Silva hit earlier), a backflip early on, and another one towards the bottom. "It was a little loose. I crashed a little earlier before finals - I could hardly keep my head up on some of those landings. I have mad whiplash... I don't think I'm going back up." Score: 74.00

Run Two

13:47: Vinnie T gets redemption on his second run, linking up multiple stepdowns, and adding in tricks that he wasn't able to get in on run 1.

13:52: Tyler McCaul gets the top-to-bottom run he was looking for, including his 'Triple Dipper' stepdown drop, which he says is the biggest he's ever hit. Score: 82.00

13:55: Once again, Carson Storch can't quite make the connection up to the ridge, and isn't able to complete his run. Expect to see him come back with a vengeance next year.

14:00: Szymon Godziek puts the pieces together on run two, with a line that included a massive 360 and a front flip to finish things off. "That was my biggest drop 360 ever." Score: 75.00

14:05: Semenuk's second run doesn't work as planned - he gets plenty of speed for the mid-run cork 720 this time, but ditches his bike midair when he realizes that he'd gone way too big.

14:11: Adolf Silva shows the world why he was invited to Red Bull Rampage, hitting two of the venue's biggest drops. His score didn't reflect just how gnarly his line was, but in his word, "It was a really good run for me...More than happy, made it to the bottom safe." Score: 64.33

14:20: Aggy puts in a full run, finishing with a freeride flick for good measure. Score: 52.00

14:22: Remy Metailler repeats his freeracer line from run 1, with a few little tweaks to better his first score. Score: 56.66

14:27: Reed Boggs crashes hard trying to stomp a backflip off the drop he did a suicide no-hander on first run, but gets right up, uninjured. Score: 34.00

14:33: Kyle Strait repeats his line from run 1, sprucing it up with more speed, a bigger extension on his suicide no-hander, and a Superman to finish things off. "The way you can build the drops here and stack up the landings has been really good. I had a great time, enjoyed it, smooth run." Score: 80.33

14:38: Thomas Genon adds in a flatspin 360 to his action-packed run, and finishes it off with a flip stepdown. Score: 83.33

14:47: Satisfied with a third place finish, Ethan Nell takes a 'cruiser' run down the course.

14:50: Lacondeguy was on a tear, but can't hold it together at the bottom of the course. Score: 50.33

Brett Rheeder is the 2018 Red Bull Rampage champion!

First and second tracks in the fresh dirt on Lunn s line.

Thought it was a bit low, but clearly the judges are leaving themselves room to get the ranking right in the end.
  • + 89
So disappointing... absolutely no way he can improve that score... that line should've scored higher. Hope he just pulls out. No need to risk body and limb.
  • + 4
I was upset too, but then I see that he will win bc no one else will finish their run.
  • + 311
Penalised for being original and riding gnar....change the judges

Rampage back to its roots but you have do slope tricks to win....WTF?
  • + 3
@savinka: hahaha... been thinking the same.
  • + 66
He looked gutted with the scoring - don't get me wrong as I love the tricks too, but I thought the score for his run was low...
  • + 4
@moslow: To be fair, we don't have any idea where the other lines are going to score yet.
  • + 10
@jpetznick: The issue is that there is really nothing fairclough can do to improve that line. That means he can probably only improve so much (single digit improvement). He had one trick-able section unless he tricks the canyon gap which I doubt.

Robbed... but still sitting first of the three top-to-bottom runs that have been pulled so far?

he is not from 'murrica. Clearly judges always favor homeboys, last year with Bizet, now with Brendog. Fk this event.

@moslow: I guess my question then would be is that Brendan's fault or the judges' fault? It's clear in the criteria that tricks are a big part, so choosing a line that limits the number of tricks you can do seems like a quick way to shoot yourself in the foot.

As a freestyle snowboard judge, it just kind of drives me nuts when people get so wound up with scores when all they are is a series of numbers that gives you a final ranking.

If the judges could give a score above 80 to everyone who sticks a run, I'm sure they would. Unfortunately they'd start to run out of space to properly rank riders really quickly if that was the case.
  • + 69
@Travel66 Can't agree more. Back to it's roots my ass! Give them one builder max! I fully respect the size of the stuff these guys are hitting, but with the amounts of digging they do, they manage to turn the mountain into a super hyper mega, (enter synonym here), slope style course. I used to love the techy lines from back in the days. Go Brendog!!! Represent the Surrey Hills!!!
  • + 22
Agreed. That shoulda scored a solid 8 points higher.
  • - 3
 poor bearclaw.
  • + 28
@jpetznick: I get it, tricks are a big part and I wasn't expecting Fairclough to score high 80s or even high 70's... but 60's is very low. That line was a solid 70+ in my book. From 70 there's 30pt spread from 70 to still score the rest. The way I see it, this is rampage... it's not a slope contest where it's tricks after tricks after tricks with smooth lines/booters/landers where you can really improve scores from run to run. For the most part, scores for most of these riders will not change much from run 1/2 and having 30pts is plenty to score the riders IMO.
  • + 19
Nobody wants to roll in first next year.
  • + 25
"Thomas Genon's run was super smooth and fluid"... 78.66. Last I checked, Rampage wasn't supposed to be a slopestyle competition, concerned mainly about smoothness and fluidity, with the inherent big tricks. The name itself doesn't even imply that lol. Apparently I picked my riders based on something that the judges aren't scoring. I may be screwed as far as winning that Boxxer goes, but oh well. Rampage is losing a little touch with its essence. Sorry not sorry.
*Disclaimer: I understand that all those riders are in a separate dimension when it comes to skill, and by no means is any of that easy, and more gnar = more risk = more injury (I hope everyone will be fine!)... but still, this isn't Crankworx. This is RAMPAGE we're talkin about. Food for thought.
  • + 10
@mtbikeaddict: I think his run was underscored as well. He's so smooth it makes it look easier than it is. He's got some tricky stuff in his run. I hope he gets another go at it because he's got more tricks in his sleeve.

But wind is kicking up already. Sucks.
  • + 4
@onemanarmy: Well yeah. Tommy G, the rest, all great riders. Don't wanna pick on him in particular... Just using that phrasing to make a point. Brendog didn't crash. He had a sick line. Ergo, why the score?

Rankings after 1st runs... Agree? Disagree? Let's hear everyone's reasoning!

Rheeder
Lacon
Nell
Van Steenbergen
Genon
Strait
Sorge
Fairclough
Boggs
Remy
Aggy
Silva
Semenuk
Brandt
Godziek

Lunn
Vinnie T
McCaul
Storch
  • + 7
One big bummer of going first, almost always gets underscored to make room for what may come. Not saying it should be that way, but it is. Judging is super hard.
  • + 2
@onemanarmy: Hm... Wasn't able to edit, so I guess I'll add another comment... Like I said, absolutely none of that is easy, even if they make it look that way. I completely empathize with that feeling. But Fairclough being like 20 points off is a little weird.
  • + 3
@jpetznick: based on first runs I would put Brendog at least 1 or 2 places higher. Sorge had that sick massive drop but neither him nor Genon had the technical steep/chute aspect. I think TVS and above are unquestionably higher scoring runs than Brendog because of the tricks which are a criteria.
  • + 5
@mtbikeaddict: First scores are ALWAYS low. It sucks for those guys.

I will say this... the judging this year is way way better than in years passed. I think having these guys locked up in a room away from the fans really helps remove the emotional bumps as riders go by. You'd end up with a guy scoring 67 and 10 riders later a guy does the same run and scores 87.

Judging way better this year. I think a couple guys scored a bit lower than I personally would have scored them but all all. I'm a fan of the changes. Thanks Redbull for changing this up. Another year of good improvements.
  • + 15
@jpetznick: Yeah, but if they're going off ranking more than score then maybe first rider down shouldn't be scored, or NO riders should be scored, until all the round one runs are finished. Brendog got compared to nothing, and underscored.
  • + 8
@jpetznick: I'f put Fairclough Above Strait and Lacon above Rheeder..otherwise good in my opinion
  • - 3
@LoganKM1982: Scores and rankings are the same thing. Brendog could've been given a 75, but that only gives the judges fewer numbers to work with when they have to score the 30+ runs that are still to come.
  • + 4
@jpetznick: Rheeder should be the rider in 3rd.
  • - 3
@gramboh: Definitely fair. I went back and rewatched Brendog's and Genon's runs real quick. An interesting note is that since Brendan's chute is closer to the bottom it's shot from a lower angle which makes it look steeper than anything that's shot from the helicopter closer to the top of the slope. The judges will have been there throughout the whole lead up to the event, so they'll have a much better idea of comparable steepness than anyone watching the livestream.
  • + 0
 @sebmx: I demand reasoning! hahaha
  • + 20
silva as well. that was outrageously underscored
  • + 13
f*ck, if one was robbed it is Genon, on live screen rheeder and Andreu getting super nervous waiting for Thomas‘s results then him getting 5th, and both being super happy speaks for itself. Please, please rider judged events is where the future has to go. Not live steam / mass market compatible, but authentic & honest.
  • + 78
@jpetznick: Jordie Lunn got to the top of brendan’s chute and said ‘No thanks’. If a man that has nailed bits of pallet to a tree and ridden down them says no, you know that’s got to be a tech line.

  • + 13
Love how they say Remi is a freeracer but he doesn't race?
  • + 3
@Mudhead: I have as much respect for Brendan as anyone else, but it looked to me more like Jordie was in the middle of a run where he had already had some instabilities, was off his own line, and didn’t want to risk pile driving himself on something he hadn’t practiced or probably even scoped out when he knew he had another run to take. Either way, let the downvotes roll in!

  • + 4
@Mudhead: yep, Fairclough’s chute was insane! jordie was also super sick and barely got any practice and still rode that hard. The top of his run was some of the most impressive riding of the day imo. Too bad he was unable to finish digging his line in time!

@makripper: use the Google machine. Remi does alot of racing . Just not on the world cup stage

I appreciate the more raw lines and the bigger drops. Doing tricks off those should get big points but all the slopestyle shit at the bottom should have little effect on the scores.

 Time stamps for rampage:
11:21 “Fairclaw” gets f*cked in the ass. Royally.
11:30-14:50 A rabid mob shoving hats at riders who literally almost died.
11:30-14:50 “Can I have your goggles can I have your goggles can I have your goggles can I have your goggles?”
11:30-14:50 periodic poll asking me what rider I like. Luckily the were spaced out quite nicely and only showed up halfway through each riders run, forcing me physically click on and X out the poll. Otherwise I got poll free really really cool landscape shots.
12:47 super sick commercial telling me I should go “RVing”
13:47-14:50 couple more robberies. Classic.
14:50 “Can I have your goggles?”

Pretty cool rampage all things considered.

I just feel for Olly Wilkins. He definitely deserved a new jetski.
  • + 7
Devo’d for Brendan. Some massive runs but his was the only one I got that nice feel or refreshing originality and gnar. Should have been rewarded accordingly for that. The rest of the venue did look like a slope event by comparison.

Did Fox payed more than Troy Lee? : ))
  • + 7
 Gutted for him
  • + 4
Brendan Fairclough line uses natutal elements. Other lines mostly look like skatepark/slopestyle and they are so polished.
In my opinion he had one of best and most interesting lines.
Real freeride, as this competition should be?!?!
Maybe not first place, but not last for shure!
  • + 10
Kinda dumb that they are judged against each other at all. Is one line really that much gnarlier than another? Rheeder's run was amazing. Brendawg's and Remy's were too, but in different ways. Get rid of the points, since they are totally arbitrary anyway and instead of 1, 2, 3 overall they should have Best Line, Best Tricks, Most Style, with one winner for each category.
  • + 4
@the-deakinator: Bet you and Olly were gutted too! Putting in all that work, only for it to be scored the way it was
  • + 8
I think they should have a new format.
Let all riders take their first run without receiving scores. Then take an intermission and let the judges rank them all together and release the scores once all the first runs are completed. The judges could compare all the runs on video, and get them stacked correctly. Give the riders 30 minutes after the scores are released to plan their second run. And then run the rest of the comp giving scores as they go. This would eliminate the need to "leave room" for higher scores. It doesnt seem so hard. Yes it would leave a larger time gap for shenanigans but it would be much more fair, and I doubt riders would disagree.
  • + 5
@Travel66: It's hard to ask for a better group of judges:
-Nico Vink
-Kyle Jameson
-KC Deane
-Josh Bender
-Gregg Watts

Who would you substitute?
  • + 4
 Agree. Should have been:
1. Andreu
2. Brendog
3. TVS

(This isn’t a slope style event)
  • + 1
@GMay: Yet you put the dude that did the most tricks in the number one slot?

If you're going pure mountain then you can argue for Brendog and TVS but you'd have to eliminate Andreu from the top 3... maybe replace with TMac. You know... if that's what you're saying.

I think you underestimate what Rheeder road. He carried a lot of speed through much of his run and had some very technical sections. He did land 2 nearly perfect 3's in opposite direction so of course that will get factored in. And he also did a gnarly flat drop backflip.

If you want to eliminate tricks from the judging then you need to eliminate them completely from the competition. The reality is... it's a complete riding event and all things are judged.

I think everyone will agree that Brendog's score was low. Outside of that I don't think I agree with most folks. Rheeder deserved the win. There's a reason Nell didn't bother taking a real shot at him in his second run and Andreu upped his speed in his second run.

There will always be guys that folks thing "get robbed" but me personally... I think the riding, the event, the judging, all made big steps forward this year. I think it was a rad event.

Less manicured. More gnarly. Less Slopestyle at the bottom. Etc. What more do people want? Every single ride had 30/40/50/60/70 foot hits in their lines.... multiple hits in that range.
  • + 1
@onemanarmy: I went back and checked out Rheeder's run from a couple of different angels and I feel like the judges did a really good job on the results now. Rheeder's run was definitely the most burley of the top 3 finishers. If Rheeder's run would have been any less difficult, then Andreu for the win.
I really liked the fact this event didn't have a lot of wood this year.
  • + 1
@sebmx: I have a hard time seeing them every bringing the wood back. It made it way to Slopestyle orientated and dudes were just going freaking too big for the conditions.

Example being... this year... if you put wood on any of the top or middle hits you're going to carry WAY too much speed for whatever you have next. Guys were already having a hard time controlling speed between zones. Example... Syzmon... if he didn't bail out when he did he's probably dead. He was on his way to clearing the next ledge and he would have carried the bounce off the cliff. Put wood in there and it's way too dangerous.

Leave the wood for Slopestyle events where it's needed and warranted.

Yeah... I've watched Rheeders run 20 or 30 times at this point and it's a lot gnarlier than people realize. He's got some drops running into super loose areas and he does a roll in line that no one else was doing. Double drops. Sketch catch berms. Etc.
  • + 311
Brendogs line, unique, raw and balls to the wall everything rampage should be. scored low. Slopestyle lines with wide smooth pavement to roll on and trick will win. Rampage has lost its soul.
  • + 39
Two thumbs up! Exactly what i was thinking! His Line was so gnarly, so narrow, and yet so smooth! Sad...
  • + 16

 And who is Fairclaw?
  • + 4
@fartymarty: I hear ya, it's like watching ski/snowboard movies that are all jibby/spiny...
Except that with the new venue, slopestyle aspect seemed to be diminished relative to amount of big mountain riding IMO. Yeah, some of the guys were tricking features, but some of the sniper lines, chutes and gaps were sick AF. Worth watching.

Kid: Brett over here over here.
Brett: Oh yeah, you want a high five eh.
Kid: I want you goggle, gimme your goggle
Brett: I need a for my 2nd run lol.

 The rabid mob
  • + 9
It was the same a hole kid that was the ringleader begging for goggles. Worthless spoiled brats @Henrito:
  • + 3
@Henrito: Yeah!!!! It was after Metaillers's second run, did you notice the same kid awkwardly hugging Aggy just before?
  • + 1
 Can I have your skills?
  • + 161
My pick for Rampage winner is whichever rider backhand slaps that annoying kid in the finish corral that keeps asking for goggles.
  • + 128
Next year they should have, "The Brian Lopes Spirit Award"
  • + 7
TMac gave them a great NOPE face and then said "I've thrown everything I'm going to throw."
  • + 132
 Brendog 67 points? WTF?
  • + 14
Remember when some dh racer got on podium with no tricks?

As somebody else said: "rampage has lost his soul" and is now unfortunately just a giant slopestyle... Sad Frown
  • + 5
@winko: Gees runs both were pretty amazing, He charged the same lines other were tiptoeing.
  • + 1
@mfoga: Yup i remember thaose years Maybe the judges should review the tapes from that era.
  • + 92
67 for Fairclough????? That is just plain silly. The guy ticked all the boxes and got underscored once more. Dont think he will be back... Not worth it.
  • + 88
Get them kids under control! Maybe do autographs after the event?
  • + 47
Couldn’t agree more. I’d like to hear what the riders have to say after their run not some kid saying “Hey, can I have your goggles after your second run?” Haha
  • + 41
Yeah, at one point they even asked Adreau for his goggles. Simmer down kids, he just defied death.
  • + 5
RB needs to get their media player under control.

That one kid is really keen on getting the goggles haha

  • + 67
Is it just me, or did Godziek's helmet fly off during his crash in the upper part of his FIRST RUN!?!? What?! How does a full face helmet fly off in a crash. Did he not have it done up?!
  • + 9
Saw the same thing, at the end he took it off without undoing the buckle, clearly very loose! I know a lot of riders who do that on the trail, but on Rampage shiiiiiittt! Balls of steel / crazy!
  • + 13
 Buckle up bro, it's rampage!
  • + 29
I think he never closes his fullface. he pulled it off right afterwards without opening aswell. C'mon you're a father now.
  • + 7
The helmet he is wearing has one of those magnetic clips. 2nd time I've seen one of those come undone. I don't know why a company would steer away from the double D.
  • + 4
It's bad for business for him and helmet company. Either he's a reckless athlete or the helmet company making bad helmets.
  • + 12
He must have checked the comments during the break, he had it done up for his 2nd run.
  • + 5
Helmet strap was closed, but way too loose on first run, not even close to throat / necessarily tight fit: pinkbike.com/photo/16503257
But he strapped up for second run.
  • + 16
@one38: I didn't try to play that image. Just so you know...
  • + 1
@one38: It wasn't done up at all when he reached the bottom on the first run
  • + 5
Pretty sure the strap wasn’t done up before he dropped in on his first run, and it looked like he didn’t bother to do it up after his crash. I was pretty surprised that the commentators didn’t mention it once.
  • + 3
Spend millions of dollars on medics, helicopters, ambulances and have some punk not tie up his helmet and almost die because of it. I would have him disqualified for that.
Maybe someone dying is good for ratings?
  • + 1
@nickgarrison: Agree! Double D's around my mug for safety!!
  • + 64
"Can I get your shoes?" What are these kids homeless or something?

  • + 4
The weirdest autocorrect going on Big Grin
I missed him talking about his run, is he going to go up and try again or is he pulling out?
  • + 1
Agreed. I think the commentators said he wasn't feeling well either, which is understandable. That was a sick 3 though early on!!
  • + 1
 Er sorry, not 3... a RODEO 720!!

@AdamOdh: Yeah, scariest run yet...more to come Smile
  • + 26

  • + 10

  • + 1
@aribr: hell...if Sorge soared like that he would have won...some serious air and balls...should've been top two...then at least we would see the rest of the runs
  • + 42
TVS throwing his bike and it skidding and landing upside down should be worth some points
  • + 5
My son was cracking up about that. I think he thought that was the best trick. Hopefully he doesn't try to emulate it.
  • + 3
Andreu also skillfully parked his bike during his crash

Ok so here's the solution. Every rider does their first run, those runs are then collectively judged in the interval between runs 1 and 2. THEN, after each of their second runs they are judged in real time, as they are now, AGAINST there first run.. There, fucking simple.

Even though Casey shreds and is at the top of the female freeride game, she still isn't even near the skill level required to put down one full run at Rampage.
  • + 12
She went fuckin huge in that Corbet's drop, I think she could send it
  • + 1
Casey is no where near that level!
  • + 6
@danelliott:I call bullshit.... I bet she can throw down a run better than most would think
  • + 16
 @danelliott:

I'm gonna call that out. Casey has absolutly got the skills. lets not forget, its about how she would interpret the mountain for her line. it doesn't have to be full of 360's and 75ft drops to be a good Rampage line.
tup
  • + 27
She is there for that reason. She posted about it on her Instagram a few days ago. I think she could absolutely crush her own line. It’s not about her being up to par for a podium, it’s about FINALLY having a woman on the roster.
  • + 4
She's said it's a goal to compete, probably not next year but possibly 2020
  • - 1
Nice point here, it's all about 'hit that door'. Obviously she's far from 2018 rampage level. But, what about to place nowdays Ms Brawn in a, let's say pre-2010 rampage event
  • + 4
She's a badass! I'd love to see it. She has a large skill set - fest jumps, corbets, etc.

Absolutely, this sport needs to include women for every possible reason.
  • - 2
@danelliott: She doesn't have to compete against male riders. There is no sport which a female would have to beat male in order to compete. RedBull, don't be sexist, it women wants to participate, open the event to female athletes. Male should not decide what female want and should do.
Plus, the female athlete level will never rise if they are not invited to join!!!

  • - 1
@danelliott: don't make me mansplain this to you!!!!!!
  • - 2
Maybe they should have a women rampage, but having her or any woman on the same course only means the lines are totally tamed and 100’s or riders trying to get a spot left out to include a rider that qualifies just because she is a woman. Rampage will lose any of the little credibility it has left. It will be just a publicity stunt.
  • + 1
@oragejuice: yup...Cam hinted at it as well.

down vote me all you want but why is a rider like Metailler at rampage when Reece Willson is not. Judging Remy on his previous rampage experiences and ability to ride that terrain I find it hard to understand why he's competing when there are many other riders who's style and skillset is much more relevant to this type of competition. Don't get me wrong Remy is one of my favourite rides to watch footage of but I must say he's out of his zone in rampage and there are multiple other riders who equally deserve the chance.

Honestly on the main line that most guys are doing, it may as well be the same location as last year. I'm actually not sure I'd know the difference. Would really love to see people using more of the terrain as it lies, but I guess they'll have to start rewarding that in the scoring.

So there is a best trick award, and mcgazza spirit award, they should add a “best sketchy, raw, steep, natural, tech award” as well to promote variety in runs and keep all fans happy. Brendog totally got robbed, but a lot of “slopestyle” guys did also incorporate at least one sort of tech steep feature as well as big smooth drops/jumps. The 3 different awards (trick, raw, spirit) besides the podium should also win cash prizes!
  • + 5
I'm so sick of dealing with the results every Rampage. I honestly think that this event should not be judged. Its such epic riding, and the gnarliest ride NEVER wins. I know all of these rides are incredible, but in my book Fairclough, the top of Jordie's run and some others were way head of the big air boys. Slopestyle has added to Rampage, but its also stolen from it big time.
  • + 5
To the people saying we need new judges...

I find it hard to ask for a better group of judges:
-Nico Vink
-Kyle Jameson
-KC Deane
-Josh Bender
-Gregg Watts

Who would you substitute and why?

I think we need to remove the "amplitude and airtime" judging criteria. Amplitude and airtime are important for slopestyle, not necessarily for a freeride event like this. Zink's steep couloir last year was one of my favorite Rampage moments of all time.
  • + 2
Easy, McCaul, and Berrecloth in. KC Deane and Josh Bender out.
  • + 2
@Nathan6209: Why do you say that's "easy"? KC Deane is one of the few pros still doing true, old school freeride and Josh Bender is one of the OG freerider purists. If anything, those are the two that I'd keep!

@onemanarmy too true... I thought the same! he was penalised for being one of the first off! in my opinion he should have got 5th minimum.  Hanging from harnesses with a whole entourage of builders digging a freeway into utah's natural beauty is the exact opposite of "Bringing rampage back to its roots."
Pick a line, sweep it off, send it and know the consequence. Thats rampage. Ask bender.
  • + 3
I'm starting to realize that we, as the mountain bike community, forget that this is a commercial Red Bull sponsored event and not some grassroots event.

People with untrained eyes, no experience with the mountain bike world and it's history (90% of viewers) are going to be much more impressed by the slopestyle tricks because they don't know and/or cannot see how impressive the tech lines are on their tiny cell phones.

I have a suspicion that Red Bull encourages and maybe even insists on scoring higher for slopestyle type runs.

Think about it. The mountain bike community shares Brendog's run more than anything else, while all your friends who know you mountain bike send you the clips of the big flips or the big crashes.
  • + 2
So many whinny c*nts. If the format bothers you don’t watch. It’s been this way since the begining but now you douche’s have a problem. The event was sick I loved it the riders loved it but pinkbike users can’t get over their c*ntness.

Take Cam out of the presenters chair and this broadcast would be unbelievably bush-league and basically only watchable with the sound off. It’s a buffet of generic banter by people who obviously have no background or interest in the sport of mountainbiking. Mispronouncing rider’s names should absolutely not be happening, and when it does it’s more evidence that Rampage is just another gig in the life of a paid commentator. My head was in my hands the first time one of them said “full pull”. Can that phrase just be banned already? Its as bad as “sun’s out guns out”. The begging kids in the finish corral? Cringe. That has to be shut down as soon as it starts to happen. This Rampage was supposed to be a return to the roots. They talked the talk but not sure if they walked the walk.

Gutted for Zink and Semanuck! I honestly think the judging an final placements was on point. Yeah Fairclough should've been 70+, that drop on his canyon was pure DEATH.  I think the judging was great... Fairclough and Genon should have gotten far higher scores but Rheeder definitely deserved the win. Still really bummed Semenuck didn't get to finish his runs though For all you guys whining about the judges, chill out.
  • + 2
Brendog's line looks insane and sketchy, how come judges don't give points for that one any more?
  • + 4
 Holy fuck Rheeder.

Sorry didn’t bother watching! Your judges suck balls!
Besides that I hate slopestyle=rampage 2018
Fairclough should have been top 5 or even better

it almost like trying to make up for getting out styled by (fist pump winner) made this his crazy-eyed focus.

I was there in person, no mention of the plane that banked over the site only a few hundred feet above the ground????
  • + 2
It was a drone clearing-out flight. By scheduling that flyover it made drone usage illegal during the event.

@watchtower Please tell me this is the Bill Hicks reference I hope it is...

 Helmet not closed @rampage?
What a douchebag!
Even after the crash, he didn't close it for the rest of his run ...
Seriously, with all the kids watching, i would disqualify his ass into oblivion!
  • + 3
Valid complaint. Not sure why you're downvoted.
  • + 1
@colincolin: godziek shouldn't get disqualified because of how he chooses to run his helmet setup. Plus, his helmet was clipped up in the first place, it just wasn't as tight as it maybe should have been. Nonetheless, not grounds for disqualification at all.
  • + 4
@danelliott: pretty sure it should be a violation of the rules of the competition. How the hell can they have insurance when guys aren't even doing up their helmets!
  • - 2
The commentators aren’t great, i don’t understand why some recent riders, like Gee and Berrecloth couldn’t do it, it’s not like they’re using expert broadcasters instead. At least making a stab at proper pronunciation of names would be a start.

Also WTF is with Brendan’s score? A full year of slopestyle comps and every year someone wins rampage on a smooth run of big jumps and tricks. They’ve literally took the piss out of Brendan with the work he’s put in this year and the commentators made no comment on the fact that it was low. Either the judges or the criteria need tweeking if it’s meant to be a big mountain contest.

But hey, they made an augmented reality app... ????

Hmm, you know who Cam MaCaul is right?

  • + 0
yeah, he is probably done for but maybe if he stays healthy for a whole year he will throw down more... then again he isn't really a slopestyle guy so he probably can't compete even if healthy.
