Results: UCI World Cup DH, Leogang - Finals 2015

Jun 12, 2015 at 19:51
by Pinkbike Staff
JUNIOR MEN - RESULTS:
1st Andrew Crimmins 3:42.706
2nd Jacob Dickson 3:45.793
3rd Laurie Greenland 3:46.068

Quick Facts:
- Andrew Crimmins dominates, finishing 3 seconds in front of everyone.
- Remy Morton goes down in the last split, an unfortunate end for the young Australian.
- Once again the gap at the top appears and is even bigger today. The rest of the pack find themselves over 3.5 seconds back from the box.
- Laurie Greenland lands a mechanical and ends his run chainless.
- Looks like Alex Marin had a spill in the last split, he was fastest at split 2 and ended up finishing way off the pace back in mid pack.

ELITE WOMEN - RESULTS:
1st Rachel Atherton
2nd Tahnee Seagrave
3rd Emmeline Ragot

Quick Facts:
- Manon Carpenter goes through the outrageous course taping right after the landing of the final jump.
- Tahnee Seagrave lays down an absolute stormer and was completely lit through the entire course.
- Miranda Miller, local to Pinkbike HQ in Squamish, finally puts her recent injury nightmares to bed with her best ever result - 8th spot. Well done Miranda!

ELITE MEN - RESULTS:
1st Aaron Gwin
2nd Connor Fearon
3rd Remy Thirion

Quick Facts:
- GWIN HAD NO CHAIN! From watching the footage it looked like he broke it out the gate too, notice that he cased the first jump and looked down.
- According to the speed trap, looks like everyone was 4-5 km/h slower through it than in practice. Turns out the wind was right in riders faces, which makes Gwin's run even more incredible.
- Connor Fearon may have gone through the tape over the rock drop, but official results confirm he has not been DQ'd.
- When Troy Brosnan beat Bruni by over 2 seconds the wind had almost completely dropped and the temperature rose. Anyone before that may have been riding in worse conditions.
- Greg Minnaar hit his helmet peak on the start gate and ended up 0.3 seconds behind Brosnan. He was pretty antagonised at the finish line.
- Steve Smith crashed on a dusty corner and blew his chances of a repeat of the 2013 victory.
- Brook MacDonald did not run his brake damper on his Session.

As exciting as that race was to watch... somethin is awfully wrong if a guy without a chain from second one just won a world cup... even i its Gwin. Dont quite know what it is, but something, surely doesn´t feel quite right... Maybe bike designers for downhill world cup bikes can design chainless super light super absorbant effective bikes, and just toughen up the tracks... maybe Gwin has indeed been blessed with the gift od downhill mountain biking... or the others are just not trying hard enough...dont know, but somethin surely is wrong.

Anyhow, Im sure the whole chain or no chain guide argument now seems pretty f*cking irrelevant.

Great run by Gwin, he is back to his old ways after losing at least 5 career World Cup wins (conservative estimate). He still might catch Minnar but if he doesn't the old Demo might be to blame even though we all know the rider typically makes much more deference than the bike he is on when it comes to performance.

I still have yet to hear any substantive defense of having a downhill bike that converts to the wheelbase of a dirt jump bike while going through its travel.

m.vitalmtb.com/photos/features/G-Out-Project-Fort-William-BDS-2015,8934/G-Out-Fort-William-Specialized-S-Works-Demo-8,91878/sspomer,2

Think of a creative defense or positive benefits for having a bike with a rapidly changing wheelbase and wheels that are going in the opposite direction because the the extreme difference in axle path because of the concentric BB, you would be the first one. Naw, it's easier and less humiliating to hit the neg props button.

Besides, we all know the real reason Gwin is gwinning is because of his rumored 3 day close encounters campout in the woods near Port Angeles with Tim Tebow in a 2 person Tent. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
  • 13 5
I spoke to God, he says he has nothing to do with it, other than showing Aaron how to pump terrain and go smooth over rough sections. But he saw the run on replay and he loved it. He's stoked for the comments here and wishes everyone to pray and btch less but pump more. He added that 26" is dead and you have to live a good life so that you can meet in heaven

@Protour "I still have yet to hear any substantive defense of having a downhill bike that converts to the wheelbase of a dirt jump bike while going through its travel."

It's called they all do it and those galleries are hilarious because of it. But I'm sure you will get out your internet protractor and try to measure the distance, even though you don't know the frame size of the bikes in question.

But good work- you are constantly living up to your basement dwelling internet armchair engineer reputation.

 @ka-brap : "t's called they all do it "

But no bicycle in the history of the sport does it as much as the new Demo, with the most upward and inward axle path of any rear suspension ever. And of course you couldn't think of any benefits to this axle path because there are NONE. Only liabilities that can that compromise traction and stability. So you have nothing as expected.

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2426014/2015.PNG

The third from last paragraph explains why Gwin is nuts over religion:

www.outsports.com/2012/1/12/4052376/is-tim-tebow-gay

I don't care if Tebow is gay but the author sure gets creative with it.
  • 4 2
@Protour - the only proof you have of how supposedly crazy upward and inward it is, is from a completely unreliable video that a 5th grader made and put up on Youtube. Your evidence is hilarious at best.

My evidence? He won two world cups and got 2nd in his worst performance on it this year so far. That's my factual evidence- the bike is fast, the bike wins. That, my dear boy, is called the ultimate benefit in racing.
  • 3 2
Protour is right. Just gwinner is better than the bike.
  • 9 2

@ka-brap. The obvious and undeniable proof is the chart that tracks the axle path:

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2426014/2015.PNG

Gwin can obviously go fast on this bike but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be faster on another bike or that the bike isn't unstable in some situations because of the radically changing wheelbase.
  • 3 2
@Protour can you overlay that with some other bikes, eg v10c...
  • 4 1
@Protour is grasping... there's a lot more to a bike than axle path. The rear geo is more important but no one talks about that. "Rearward axle paths are for amateurs and straight liners."
  • 1 0
@jaydawg69 what does it mean by rearward path are for amateurs and straight liners? just curious
  • 2 7
flag Protour (Jun 15, 2015 at 12:28) (Below Threshold)
I actually don't think that axle paths are that important. ... as long as it doesn't create any negative handling characteristics. The new Demo does definitely create traction and stability issues. They can even be somewhat demonstrated in the sales floor at your local Specialized dealer. Stand over the Demo with both brakes on and then put your weight down into the bike with the brakes on and watch the front tire skid forward. All bikes do this but the Demo does it the most and this is a stimulation of what can actually happen on the trail when you apply both brakes on this bike.

Gwin is right, the Demo probably does ride alot better without a chain given the quirky handling characteristics of this bike. Riding with no chain means you are touching the brakes less and perhaps the extreme upward and inward axle path creates more forward momentum when you are pumping your way down the track. There, I came up with a positive handling benefit of the concentric main pivot design of the Demo for all the Demo lovers out there. Gwin needs to have an auto release on his chain after the first pedal section of every track.

The Demo made it down the hill fastest on Sunday. Aaron Gwin is racing well this year (as is Troy) on a demo. Aaron Gwin had the fastest run of the day without a chain.. on a demo. Troy placed fourth on a Demo with a chain. Chain or no chain, the bike performed well under the riders. Let it go.
  • 4 0
@Protour makes a lot of baseless generalizations without even riding the bike... quite priceless. He even stated that the new Demo would never gwin a WC race a few months ago. He's just butt hurt he's been proven wrong on many occasions.
  • 5 0
Protour has just become a star, if we won't stop it, his comments may generate more heat than boost and wheelsize debate put together. He should be a supporting commentary during each world cup round. He will be standing by a drawing board and presenting random pseudo-facts by graphs and formulas explaining why which rider rode in what way.

Nah, Gwin will win again. The only way the bike will stop him is if it catapults him in steep rocky terrain like it did to Brosnan last year.

Very much not cool protour. Perhaps you missed the memo but using images of people with disabilities to joke and demean others is lowest denominator. Carry on with the wild and meaningless discussion about your views on how the bike someone just won another world cup race on isn't up to your high standards of perfromance but don't be a d#ck to people with real concerns that likely impact their quality of life.
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns I don't get why you don't like protour ; he is pretty much like you except he is still stuck in the "negprop period".
But like you, one day, he will become so hip that people will give him lot of props and he will have 800+ followers etc...

@snl1200: "Very much not cool protour. Perhaps you missed the memo but using images of people with disabilities to joke and demean others is lowest denominator."

You are right. I truly apologize to all those beautiful people for comparing them to Waki.

@zede. Waki is not at all like me. One of his problems is that he obviously talks too much, I don't. He is a relatively slow rider who has admitted he is too much of a pussy to own a DH bike. Not me. But I'll acknowledge he has a strange obsession with me considering I mostly ignore him. Look at how he responded to my first post and then once ignored he turns and immediately resorts to personal insults. Am amateur psychologist rreading these threads could tell you more about Waki than he knows about himself. He has admitted he has a psychological disorder but that's not the worst part, and this is the biggest difference between us and also one of the biggest tragedies to occur in Europe in the last decade or so. ..... Waki is a breeder. I have lobbied hard to keep psychologically ill people from breeding but it's a tough fight because it turns out that there isn't much you can do. Forced vasectomies? Europe is way to liberal for that. Take away the children and put them in re-education camps? The bad seed is in the DNA, can't get it out its hardwired. The best thing to do is lock the children away from the public and put them in a room by themselves to make science fiction mtb drawings like daddy.

"Waki is not at all like me. One of his problems is that he obviously talks too much, I don't. " - then goes on to write a 1000 word essay...
  • 4 6
That's cool I figured you might enjoy it. I think we respect each others creativity considering 99% of the people on here are boring clones stuck inside their mediocre boring warm comfortable existence.

But Demo gate doesn't end here just because Gwin completed the most amazing run in DH history that I still don't quite believe.

Meditate for 10 minutes, cleanse your body, mind, and palate. Repeat immediately. Now refresh your existence like a newborn unaborted freshly exposed baby with blood on the chin. No past grudges toward Protour, forget all controversial memories and consider the following:

Gwin won because he has Godly skils, not because he believes in God. We all know this. He is dialed in with the new Demo and can handle the radically changing wheelbase with his superior skills, especially when the chain falls off and he doesn't have to touch the brakes, avoiding the instability of the design and maximizing its momentum gaining pumping benefits and low centre of gravity.

But what about Joey the beginner who rides the Demo assuming a predictable ride, applies both brakes at the same time I'm sketchy terrain, knives the front tire, losses traction, and breaks his neck?

My legal position on this matter is that if a bike has the most radically changing wheelbase in the history of bicycles customers who purchase the bike should be warned. Please consider that no vehicle in the history of all human created vehicles has as unstable of a wheelbase as the new Demo. Doesn't mean Gwin won't continue to dominate but he is not the rider of this bicycle that I am concerned about. I am concerned about Joey.

Imagine Connor, after the run of his life, sitting in the hotseat. Gwin is next, a monster of a rider who would scare the black back into Michael Jackson. Connor wants to believe that Gwin will be slower, but there is a overwhelming feeling of doubt in his mind. He hears that Gwin breaks his chain out of the start gate, and breathes a sigh of relief. His first win, and against a hugely stacked field in an incredible new course. Then he hears Gwin is almost on pace at the splits. He sees Gwin charging down the last jump with the time still green. Connors hopes are dashed as he lifts his head to the sky in despair. He sees a glint of light moving upward, toward the sun. Its the ghost of Gwins chain, rising to its heavenly home.

  • 5 1
the very last bit where manon went out was ridiculous. Youre right though Gav-B, everyone else had to race it.
  • 9 1
The thing I don't like about it is that she gained no advantage at all, whereas when Connor went outside the tape (very close to a pole, if not over) and didn't get DQ'd when that could have been perceived as an advantage. Kerr's DQ was a joke because the tape got moved out after his run meaning people were landing ever further out than he did.
Add to this that Rach didn't get DQ'd for leaving the course and not rejoining where she left at Windham a couple years ago.
If they're going to enforce rules, at least be consistent
  • 6 0
The example of Rach is not applicable. The rules were changed only last year. It used to be: if you did not get an advantage you'll be alright. Now it is if you do not return where you left the course you are DQ-ed. Connor's one was a DQ according that. But he didn' t went outside a pole ( maybe this rule is because tape moves in the wind)
  • 2 0
I didn't know about the rule change.
With the way that they taped that final section of track, it was almost as if they were trying to get people DQ'd, I mean why would you tape the course that tight on 2 of the biggest features on the track? It didn't make for better racing, just took points away from Manon.
It looked like Connor landed very close to a pole but I'm glad he didn't get penalized for it, it was a hell of a run
  • 2 1
Sometimes they tape wide so there are lots of lines and sometimes they tape tight so there are not as many choices or only one fast line. It is all there to challenge people who are highly skilled and pushing it to their max. Everyone had the same course so there is nothing really to complain about. Ref Conner; he was just lucky that there were less poles. A long section of tape has quite a bit of lattitude/ lateral movement and luckily it is the poles that counted in his case.

  • 7 1
I am just still finding my words here! Phenomenal run to watch and part of WC history for sure...
  • 14 1
Does anyone else get the feeling that a majority of these tracks could be won with just the right technique and not a pedal stroke? We could be looking at a big change in the way the field approaches these tracks...
  • 5 0
@kbrock Agreed, I feel like a lot of a time it's just draining your energy trying to put in pedal strokes where you don't need to.
  • 14 2
 Jesus and Mary Chain?!
  • 8 1
Can anyone explain to me how a chain can break in the first pedals strokes?
(preproduction in answer is not accepted)
  • 2 0
@src248, I really wonder about it all the time man...Perhaps a lot more is to be said about wind efficiency and saving energy like you said. Curious if maybe most of the riders are hesitant to try just simply because no one has purposely tried (to my knowledge, correct me) logging a race run without pedaling. It's only the been the product of mechanicals that force them into it. So we could be seeing a new style emerge soon.
  • 6 0
Also I believe suspension is more efficient when chainless as (obviously) completely uncoupled from drivetrain.
  • 5 1
@kbrock Im sure the lack of chain will make you concentrate a little more and push a little more...which to try do week after week must be mentally and physically draining
  • 3 0
Fabien Barel put up some pretty solid results with as little pedaling as possible. He's pretty adamant about technique.
  • 6 1
the rear suspension works a lot better too without a chain.
  • 1 0
@stretchza I agree in a way, but also consider how these top tier athletes are trying to push themselves and concentrate at 110% at baseline. They have to push a little more just to win any race. The way I look at it, it is those who are focused and "in it" at the highest mental level, week after week, who probably will end up the most consistent winners. Which doesn't always happen some seasons. Agreed, not easy to do, but it seems like something capable of practicing and perfecting.
  • 1 1
 @Alexhyland & WayneParsons - True.
  • 2 0
Yeah I would LOVE to see a pro chainless DH race. Bryceland has proven that smooth riding can often beat trying to pedal everywhere, and Mulally at worlds too. Gwin just looked so pinned and fluid over the rough sections on that run!! No chain from the start at Leogang track is truly an incredible feat though. There's 30 second pedal in the middle, and it was windy!?
  • 1 1
Bro, one comment is enough. Stop giving us ecu's a bad rep.
  • 1 1
Sounds like you are mad, bro? My condolences.
  • 1 0
 @kbrock

NV used to do this in his prime.
  • 1 0
Kbrock is mad cool. I'm talking bout lrgr1890
  • 17 0
Did anyone else notice Gwin hitting 56kph the highest of anyone? That is insane, goes to show that skills beat power. I genuinely believe that the drivetrain has a negative impact on rear suspension as with the rear brake on the chain holds tension against a rearward axle path. Maybe Cranfield have the right idea with their zero chain growth suspension.
  • 7 0
Man I saw that too, he is a fucking ripper of a rider. Posts the fastest speed through the splits without a pedal stroke, pure class!
  • 6 0
Perhaps the wind did indeed drop from brosnans ride onwards
  • 3 1
this is what Specialized claim too- FSR is independent of pedaling, braking, and chain induced forces. That's what they say anyway.
  • 1 0
Although fsr can be setup to help with pedalling and it does stop the brake jacking the suspension like most single pivot designs if there is tension in the chain working against a rearward axle path (chain growth) then the rear suspension can not physically move as freely. No amount of design can stop that physically being the case without getting rid of chain growth.

Gwin turned Leogang into his pump track
  • 15 1
You all think the biggest shock was Gwin winning without a chain? Did all you guys miss that Blenki was wearing gloves?!
  • 2 0
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! That was the first thing I noticed when he dropped in!!
  • 16 1
What the hell just happened? Aaron is a wizard!
  • 54 3

  • 14 0
Holy crap Manon just got DQ'ed Dramaaaaa
  • 3 0
Oh well, she would only have been 4th anyways. Sucks for the title chase though.
Anyone know what happened?
  • 3 1
Î remember Rachel leaving the track and passing a pole I think two years ago without being DQ`d......Sucks for Manon
  • 13 1
Aaron Gwin with the win after his chain breaks out of the gate...has to make the rest of the field feel insignificant at this point.
  • 16 2
 Running to church right now!
  • 12 0
That is the most stunningly eventful WC DH race I’ve ever watched. I still can’t quite believe it.
  • 14 1
Gwin is a legend.... end of.
  • 14 2
And now thousands of downhillers start going to church...
  • 7 1
Maybe we should create a new church!!!! Hahaha
  • 10 2
 St. Aaron's?
  • 4 1
 Sounds good!!!
  • 6 1
Rule #1. No church on Sunday morns, because race day.
  • 20 9
Everyone talks crap about Aaron and his jesus lovin. But he won without a chain. It's gotta be workin a little bit for him
  • 7 0
 Definitely a miracle run.

That was insanely awesome. Well worth staying up till 3am for Smile
  • 5 0
Indeed my friend. And with kona Fearon getting second. That was the icing on the cake

 Pure comedy right there.
  • 10 1
 Well there goes the internet
  • 9 2
 Gwin got God dopping!
Should be that allowed UCI ??...
Is he going to be able to pray next round?...
Please make a stupid rule!... Too dangerous for the rest!!
  • 2 0
I just checked the official UCI rules, its OK if the whole team prays to the same god!
  • 9 0
 Anyone wanna buy my chain?
  • 4 0
not good for the chain market
  • 10 5
greg minnaar was not ANTAGONIZED -- to be antagonized means to be made to seem like a villain or a bad person by others. He was upset or anguished. NOT ANTAGONIZED!
Also, Manon disqualified but Rachel wasn't in Windham in 2012? They need to stop changing their rules. Make them and leave them.
  • 4 1
Yeah, english isn't even my main language and when I saw that I was like "somebody is using big words they don't know what they mean".
  • 5 0
Hell of a run by Mr. Gwin! But I think Connor snagging the second place is a even better story. This kid has been constantly on the edge of a great run but has been hit by some bad luck when he's been going all out. Good to see even more of these younger racers getting podium spots. This so far has been a far more exciting season than even last year. The last few races are gonna be just absolutley wild.
  • 8 0
The most exciting WC ever... The last ten riders.. jesus!
  • 4 0
A magic run by Gwin, but this is pretty embarrassing for SRAM. If their top of the line £40 chains are snapping under the contrived conditions of a single day of rolling down a hill, and in the hands of pro mechanics, what's the likelihood of them lasting in the hands of normal humans who like to …You know… Pedal occasionally?

But yeah, wow.
  • 10 1
 Yeah crimmins!

  • 5 1
Oh, how the tide of public opinion on Gwin has changed from just a couple months ago when PB interviewed him before the season start. I will repeat what I said back then: who cares what he says or believes, he is Aaron f'ing Gwin for God's sake. And he is truly one of the greatest ever.

One of the best races ever. First Minaar puts in a storming run. Then Thirion takes lines that no one else does, absolutely beautiful riding, then Fearon puts in the ride of his life which could only be beaten by an impossible run by Gwin. Which happened, sans chain...wow! I hope the rest of the season is as exciting as this one!

 To-Do list Aaron Gwin:

No tire -> check
No chain -> check
No brake ->
No bike ->

To be continued...
  • 1 0
check the 'no brakes' on the list. he had a good crash because of a failure on his brakes a few years ago (also on Leogang).
  • 2 1
Taking nothing away from Gwin's ride (it was incredible and absolutely awesome to watch) these two 'quick facts' actually cancel each other out.

"- According to the speed trap, looks like everyone was 4-5 km/h slower through it than in practice. Turns out the wind was right in riders faces, which makes Gwin's run even more incredible.
- When Troy Brosnan beat Bruni by over 2 seconds the wind had almost competely dropped and the temperature rose. Anyone before that may have been riding in worse conditions."

The wind "was right in (the) riders faces, which makes Gwin's run even more incredible" yet anyone riding after Troy was in better conditions as the "wind had almost completely dropped"
  • 5 0
are we gonna miss Bruni's run cause of the live feed format?

  • 1 2
 'Cased' the first jump?
Apparently the 'reporter' doesn't know what it means to 'case' something, as he would've had to land on a double or other obstacle to 'case' it.
  • 2 0
Did not make it to the downslope of the first jump, hanging up the rear wheel and losing momentum in the process - which to me is the definition of a case. Sadly there is no Oxford English dictionary definition for an MTB bro term to prove or disprove this though. Also watch the Claudio preview vid and try tell me that first obstacle isn't a 'jump'.
Tell me this, did Manon case the arch jump at Fort Bill?
  • 1 0
'Casing' a jump comes from MX, where if you land short on a double etc you can smash your ENGINE CASE into the top of the obstacle. Obviously hitting your motor/frame rail on a jump takes your suspension out of the equation to varying degrees, which in turn has been known to brake people's feet, ankles, legs, and even backs depending on how hard they hit.
In any event, the term is used in other disciplines such as in this case, where 'casing' would mean the rider spanked the bottom-bracket area of his frame while landing short into something.
The jump in question was pretty minor as AG landed it like everyone else, and didn't even come close to smashing his frame into the ground.
In the end, it doesn't mean diddly poo however, as the dude just cemented his legacy in one run-if there had been any doubt(s) beforehand-
Against the best in the fricken world, with the wind in his fricken face, he bested EVERYONE while riding the WHOLE RUN CHAINLESS!
He's the GOAT
  • 1 0
Thanks for the history lesson of the word, I genuinely did not know that. But this is DH, not MX. There are no engines and a case is generally considered to be what I described above, if you were to hit the frame/cranks/chainguide area on the back of the landing I would refer to that as a 50/50 - we do not tend to see very much of that going on in WC DH. Also he did not land it like everyone else, it was very clear he did not make it to the full downslope, he hung up the rear wheel on the top of the landing.

Anyway we can agree that we have just witnessed a run that will be remembered in this sport for years or decades to come. Beast!

Whats the point of being clipped in, if your are riding chainless?

 Manon disqualified?
  • 1 0
crossed tape just before finish line
  • 2 0
No, she went outside the poles. Crossing the tape a little is ok, but going around the poles, is a DQ.

Final jump, seemed like the wind sent her off course and she landed and rode outside the bunting unfortunately
  • 1 0
jumped wide of the tape and missed a pole, didn't go back up the hill to re-enter where she went out.
