Stolen: Custom Bikes From Race Face and Easton

Feb 22, 2016 at 18:52
by Pinkbike Staff
Over the weekend, the offices and engineering area of Race Face & Easton Cycling in Burnaby, BC were broken into where 5 company and staff bikes were stolen. All of the bikes were custom builds and many had unique and prototype parts that make these bikes truly unique. The authorities have been contacted and everyone at RFE has their eyes peeled for any sign of the bikes. The cycling community is encouraged to keep their eyes open for bikes for sale with a price that seems “too good to be true” or being ridden by people that don’t seem to match the bike they’re riding, and notify the authorities and RFE if they see any of these bikes out in the wild. It is a somber day in the office today and with spring on the way, many of these bikes were new builds for 2016 that haven’t even been ridden yet. Bike thieves suck.

Massive douche bags. And I thought having my shock pump and chain lube (I know, wtf?) stolen out of my car the other day was a piss off.

Also, BC really needs to start treating high end bike thefts like auto theft. This is some serious shit.

Bc doesn't take auto theft particularly seriously........

The police don't care if the bikes are stolen or even if they find the SOB'S that stole them. They'll give you a file no. and lip service. I had Knolly Chilcotin and Norco 4x ripped off. found one on craigslist seen it confirmed it went to the cop station a block and a half away and gave them all the info and was told quote: It's a busy night and they would be 4-5 hours till they possibly get to my complaint. bike and dude gone thanks RCMP.

Did he manage to find any of them? I have a hard time believing high end bikes like that can just disappear in to the ether.

On Friday June 26, 2015 my $7000 Knolly bicycle was stolen from my house in Deep Cove while I was sleeping. A report was made to the RCMP on Saturday morning. I monitored Craigslist through the next week and on the following Friday a Knolly appeared in the listings for $2500. I contacted the person selling the bike and set up a meeting with him for the next day at the Tim Horton's on Dollarton and called the RCMP to tell them I may have found my bike. No answer on their phone so I left a message. The next morning I called the RCMP twice before going to Tim Horton's but no one got back to me. I met with the person selling the bike, recognized it as mine and had someone accompanying me call 911 while I prevented the thief from leaving the scene. When the police showed up they gave me back my bike but said they would not press charges because "he said he bought it from someone". The next day I went to the RCMP office and said I wanted to press charges but was told it would require 3 to 4 hours of paperwork and the crown probably would not go ahead. The police have been of absolutely no help in this matter. I now keep bear spray and a base ball bat near by. Photo of the thief on Facebook Stolen Bikes Vancouver June 29 and July 5.

...Tell us more about these unbranded carbon cranks, chainring, and bars, (to help recover the bikes, of course).

Bait bike programs exist and are regularly deployed in BC. That being said, you wouldn't have bait bikes sitting inside a bike companies office hoping they get stolen. It would not be the most effective means. The single most helpful step people can take to assist police is to record and promptly provide serials numbers for your bikes. You would be shocked how many people don't know those numbers - the bike shop you bought it from usually has a record. FYI.

glad you got your bike back. The constable was telling you the truth. Unfortunately, it is hard to get them charged if there is not sufficient evidence. But in your case, the guy was in possession of stolen property. If he told the cops he got it off someone, it's his word against yours and theirs. It would be hard to disprove unless you had video evidence of the him taking the bike. The defence lawyer will literally tear holes in the argument if crown puts through a weak case. There is paper work involved but that is standard for all calls the police are involved in. As for the police not wanting to do anything. It's not that they don't want to do anything. Their actions can only take them as far as the law allows. I know they are frustrated with it, they may seem like they don't care but they do. I have many friends who are police officers and believe me, they care. I know how it feels. Getting your bike stolen is the worst feeling in the world. We all try to protect our investments but there will always be the idiots who feel they are entitled to things others have worked hard for. We can make it tougher for them but if they want it, they will take it.

My moto got swiped found it called the cops same shit didn't care told them I'd recover by any means necessary they said don't break the law I said do your job And I won't have to break the law . Cops in the lower main land are fucking lazy They would rather just sit on the side of the fsr and give out tickets for people riding in the back of trucks Recovered my moto , one crackhead now walks with a limp

My police model bike was stolen back in December 2013. There was video surveillance of the thief. Allegedly, the RCMP apprehended the person, but did not do anything as they did not have the stolen goods and the video had his hair covered, so they couldn't positively ID the guy. They would not provide his information to me, and told me to stop calling them for follow up on the case. My advice : continuously check craigslist, linked in, bring awareness to pawn shops and ensure that you spread your craigslist searches to Whistler, Seattle, Victoria, etc. I did not have a positive experience from the RCMP, even after they (allegedly) apprehended the culprit. The photo of the thief is here. If you know who he is, let me know so I can burn his house down: twitter.com/MetalliMirk/status/412089608088735744

Really sorry to hear about the theft. Last year during Christmas I left my work Christmas party early to go to a friends house party (who wants to go to a dry boring work party anyway amirite?). On the way there while in traffic in the DT Vancouver Core, I saw a guy pull out huge bolt cutters and start messing with a bike that was locked up out front of a closed store. I said out loud to my Fiance "Oh my god, that is literally a bike thief, in action!". I pulled over, got out and started yelling at the guy to get away from the bike (my language was more colourful then that). He ended up walking away after I started moving towards him, but I knew if he wanted to he could probably get a solid shot in with those cutters.

My fiance asked me what I was thinking, going after someone with a weapon like that...My answer.. "what was everyone else thinking, by doing nothing?".

I hope you find the bikes and swift justice.

My paps was a long time Burnaby bike RCMP police officer. Best tip is to watch the lawn shops. Through the entire coast. These guys travel more than you'd expect.

Bike thieves are the worst kinds of people. Bikes are more than just objects to mountain bikers, and it really sucks when they get stolen.
