Some bad news for slopestyle fans. Belgium rider, Thomas Genon, has broken his ankle and had to go in for surgery soon after. He initially thought the injury wasn't so bad, but a more recent post on his Instagram indicates that he may have done some other damage; damage that will take longer to heal.
Healing vibes to Tommy-G, and we can only hope to see the stylish rider, and 2012 Redbull Joyride winner, back on the bike soon!
UPDATE: We reached out to Tommy G about what happened. Here's what he had to say. Thomas, where were you riding and how did you get injured?A place called, Skills Park in Switzerland. It just opened, they have an airbag landing and that's where I crashed.
Were you riding with anyone? The guys I mostly ride with; Anthony Rocci, Louis Reboul, Mehdi Gani, Simon Pages, and Jeremy Berthier.
You mentioned you were pushing yourself, what trick were you trying to do?I was trying to learn new moves for this season. Rotorua is coming quite fast, I guess I've burned a few steps. I simply jumped off my bike and landed on my legs. It felt like it was safe but my body went right and my foot decided to go the other way!
What is the actual diagnosis?I have a fibula fracture close to the ankle. They said this is nothing bad but I dislocated my ankle and broke a ligament (as well). This is what will take longer to recover.
What’s the road to recovery looking like? First step is having my full bodyweight on my leg, then road biking and I guess everything I can do to get my foot strong and get back. I will know more about it when we get closer to the rehab time.
Do you have any estimates on when you will be able to be back on the bike? In about 6–8 weeks they will remove one screw and then step-by-step I can put more weight on my leg.
Will you be able to make Crankworx Rotorua? What about Joyride? Any others that you hope to make it back for? I will miss Rotorua. They said I could possibly be back competing in 3 months. But it will depend on how the rehab goes but hopefully all other Crankworx!
What’s the medical support like in Belgium? The same as anywhere in Europe—I guess it's good. I also have a private insurance and with that, I could get a good surgery.
Redbull are known to have some pretty amazing athlete testing facilities, are you working with them to plan your recovery? I've asked if they could help me out in my recovery. They are looking at what can we do but we still have time before I can start the rehab!
