Minnar punctured his 29er with a tyre off the rim. Ima just grab me some popcorn cos these comments are guna fucking IMAX.

Luca and Loris both in the top 10 though!

@SangamonTaylor: To be fair they probably would have been in the top 10 on 27.5 too

If anyone minds taking a step back and looking at it from a far, then you will see that it is bike media and online trolls manufacturing the hype. Not companies. There's more noise around Minnaars 29er than when Boost came out. If Minnaar had a pink dildo shaped silicone wrap around his shock nobody would notice.

Meanwhile there are a few bikes with 29" wheels on a world cup track. That's pretty much the story. The rest is added by yourselves. How not to make a fleet of 29" Downhill bikes with new steerer tube and other DH specific hub standards if there is such interest. Bike internet is crying for it.

This is the best thing that could happen to Santa Cruz Bikes since the first carbon Nomad and V10, and you are serving it to them on a plate. Their media reps must be pouring champagne all over themselves.

On the parts check I saw, it didn't mention if the Maxxis tires were DH casing or not. Only "Shorty WT 3C Compound" Are all Shorties DH casing by default?
  • 16 0
@WAKIdesigns: I think that shock cover is the next product Peaty's working on to match his valve covers...
  • 10 1
@Fire-Starter: I wonder how a pissed off Minnaar is going to race?

@bman33: oh so you mean, the actually relevant stuff? Something that can maybe make happier days in the park for skilled folks on 29" long travel trail bikes? Get out of here man, let's go back to diameter please.
  • 2 5
@WAKIdesigns: who else is on 29 other than santa cruz? have yet to see any others in bike checks and such
  • 2 0
@nismo325: might by trek, but no confirmation right now
  • 3 0
@nismo325: i ithink the rumor is that Trek was going to be on 29ers but i havent heard anything about that today. youd think if Gee was riding a 29er today, we'd hear about it
  • 3 0
@striveCF15: feel like if gee was in first on a 29er that would be all over the place considering how much press the 29 v10 has gotten. I could be wrong tho
  • 1 0
@sooner518: there was also that shot of a fox 49 on a mondraker... Not sure who it is, i would be surprised if it was Hart or Greenland's bike
  • 3 1
@nismo325: or....also in the top 10 on 26" as well Smile

@Fire-Starter: I can't believe Wyn doesn't get punched more often. I mean I love Wyn, I think he's hilarious. But in that moment with Minnar? Talk about pushing it. Wyn better have his runnin' shoes on!
  • 8 2
@piersgritten: the tallest man on the wc is on a mondraker and tool home the bronze medalj at the worlds. Has to be his.
  • 10 0
People will get bent out of shape, but flats happen.
  • 11 4
@WaterBear: Exactly. ALL wheels sizes get flats. Minaar could out ride, jump, flow, tech etc. almost every commentor on Pinkbike, if not all of them, with a 29" DH bike or a 29" trail bike. The hate is unreal.
  • 1 0
@nismo325: I seam to recall a photo of Commencal working on 29er rear end for their DH V4.2...could be mistaken though.
  • 3 2
@WAKIdesigns: I agree with you, this is media hype and no one really cares that Gee was on a 29er too.
  • 2 2
@sooner518: I bet that he was and their is still a media "black out". Media is driving the 29 thing
  • 1 3
@piersgritten: Hart was on it - this media shit is out of control. There are a few teams running 29ers. SC is just getting off on all the media.
  • 23 6
To give media some credit, which they absolutely deserve for bringing amazing visual goods for free, I must say that looking beyond this "OMG it is a 29er" bollocks I just can'st stop watching the Vital vids. I am mostly impressed by Finn Iles and Loris Vergier, these two dudes look so relaxed in face of the gnar. I wish I looked like that on a fire road. So relaxed and seem to nail each line down to a millimeter. Huge fkng rocks and holes, and the bike just bounces under them a if they were insanely strong while the bike weighed 1kg. Holy damn. I know it just looks easy, but it seems like they are chilling and they have twice the speed in store. Brendog just zapping corners, turning like UFOs in stories of rednecks. How does the rear tyre even stay on the rim?! Gwinny and Danny Hart drawing straight lines through roughest shit.

#superskill

Wishing everyone staying away from injuries.

@Fire-Starter: cheers for the link, that's sooooooo funny! I though Greg would have taken it better to be fair. Crying!!! The finish is even better:

You never had a puncture?

"No never" :-D
  • 6 1
@bman33: chill out petal, I think most people are just having a laugh! I know I couldn't care a shit what wheel size anyone rides. But I'll happily take the piss out of EVERYONE, for anything. It's called fun. You should try it some time!

  • 8 2
To be perfectly honest, take a look at Redbulls "Rob meets" series with Minnaar - what kind of a sane person, in all honesty would give a flying f*ck what wheel size is he riding? f*cking ridiculous show for dickheads. Throws the mic...
  • 6 1
@WAKIdesigns: lets hope he podiums...SC gonna start giving away the 27.5 versions for free Wink
  • 4 2
@cunning-linguist: you and I maybe cross signals. My overall message the same as yours. That everyone needs to chill. I'm poking fun of the last year of 29 haters. All good

I would definitely write Minnaar off right now! Ha
  • 2 1
It's a fake or made up on purpose!!! Where's the tyre? Cut in half and flew away? If it was a puncture the tyre would be there somewhere, rolled between the rim and swingarm.
  • 1 2
@nismo325: I think Matt Walker has been testing a Cube 29er

And she was under the weather for the last weeks apparently. Must be frustrating for the other girls really.
  • 11 0
May be another clean sweep for the year.. she's suffering with a cold too.... I still hope some of the other girls can step it up and mix the results up this year.
  • 5 0
It is insane, seems only a mechanical could slow her down. She makes staying at the top look easy and it surely ain't.
  • 9 1
We're gonna need to get gwin to wear a wig to beat her
  • 2 0
@Fire-Starter: I hate to say it, but this would be great for women's DH.

Carpenter's done well to recovery from that crash and injury to come in 2nd too.
  • 5 4
Why is there so few women listed? Is it because others didn't show up? Wanted to know how did it go for Agata Bulska
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: aren't there reduced entrants or something or did I remember that wrong or make it up or something....?
I'm old an having too much fun to care
  • 2 2
@nojzilla: I think that's for the final. But not sure.
  • 3 0
@WAKIdesigns: Timed Training is only for the top 80 Elite Men, 10 Elite Women, and 10 Elite juniors.
  • 4 1
@WAKIdesigns: wasn't the entry points WC increased, not sure if this is the factor!

But to be honest the UCI are doing squat to encourage women's DH racing, esp when compared to the supoort they get for EwS, why would women want to put it all online and be treated by a bunch of gin swilling narcists that prob think women should be in the kitchen not racing DH and risking body and brain, clearly some women have different levels of support, eg Rachel always had her brothers and has had great supoort in recent years, but outside of that its dam hard for them! And that's before they get to the start line.. should atleast be equal and imo it's also a blight on manafactuers who don't have atleast one female rider in a team, imo that should be a mandatory rule!

Meant it as no one shows there full speed in practice. Was just using gwin as a example
  • 3 1
agreed and same could be said about Gee's good qualifying times and poor race day finishes
  • 3 2
It tells you something, sure, but Gwin probably adds gas on race day that he saves during timed practice.
  • 4 0
Especially when it it's gonna piss with rain on race day!

Yeah, just read that. Thanks. Wonder why Gee didn't rock the 29er.
  • 7 4
@whattheheel: word is they might run a 29er front only but that might be a joke by Rach.
  • 3 0
@atrokz: yeh that's not allowed by the UCI
  • 1 3
@whattheheel: cause 29'' dh have not-the-best geometries (currently) Imho
  • 1 1
@fabdemaere: because thats the ONE rule that makes sense! haha. it does not surprise me in the least.
  • 2 1
There were rumours down at the pit that Gee was gunna shred a 29er unicycle on race day. Guess we'll have to wait and find out.
  • 1 1
@fabdemaere: is that really a rule?
Didn't the spec demo have a 24" rear wheel back on the day?
  • 2 1
@chize: nobody in their right mind raced that bike, it was called the bighit. it was for urban hucks..... haha.
  • 1 0
@chize: Rule 1.3.006 "The bicycle is a vehicle with two wheels of equal diameter. The front wheel shall be
steerable; the rear wheel shall be driven through a system comprising pedals and a chain."
So no belt drive either.
  • 1 0
@whattheheel: they don't have the tyres, was half expecting to see some blackened out maxxis like the good ol days
  • 4 0
@fabdemaere: oh interesting...so Mulally and Gwin should have been disqualified when they raced sans chain? Surprised the UCI allowed it.
  • 2 0

The men's results are crazy close....this season is going to be awesome What a crazy strong field
  • 3 1
Less than a second separating the top 3. The gaps will probably widen on race day when the top riders start taking chances to gain half-seconds.
  • 3 0
I'm blown away by the fact that the top FIFTY SIX riders are only separated by 20 seconds. That's not a lot of room for error by the guys in the lead.
  • 1 0
@Dethphist: yeah, and when some guys can crash or whatever and still squeeze into the top twenty...
  • 3 0
29er makes so much sense for a course like that... wide open, pretty much a straight line with very few tight corners ... Interestingly enough , guys on the smaller wheels are still ahead, meankng ( to me anyway) that is isn't about the wheels size but the skills of a rider ... Beside , who really gets to ride tracks like that every day ? At some point this " again a new standard " bs will need to stop, this isn't evolution for the comsumer... I tried 29er and as much as I can like them , they are not MORE fun for one bit ... What the clocks says on a fast man made track makes no sense for most of us ... I like going as fast as I can but if it means weaker, heavier wheels requiring even more maintenance , I couldn't care less about that second faster... Gimme something solid , fun that I can upgrade over some new stupid standard that wont be compatible with anything else in 6 months ... Yet the industry is still making a push for it.That slight advantage will mean nothing once every other teams will be on the same wheel size... 26" was totally fine for anything, fun and fast but we've all pretty much swallowed the pill and switched to 27'5 ... Now this ?? Screw this , I don't know about the rest of you guys but myself and most of my riding buddies are all kinda getting sick of the mtb industry... If you look at BMX racing , a sport that is all about human generated speed with pedaling and pumping , I find it funny that they've all been on the same timy little wheels for decades ... fun as hell , you can swap parts with your buddies , buy new cheap upgrades and overall dont feel like you made the wrong decision buying the "wrong wheel size" that nobody will want to buy off of you in a couple of years ... Where is the evolution for us if its not more fun , overall more expensive across the board and quite frankly mankes us more hesitant to buy a new bike ?
  • 2 0
 Im with you bro. Amen

There are only 13 women entered? I guess cutting the women's field from 20 to 15 was no big deal. Is there a Jr Women's race? Did anybody enter it? I keep hoping to see the women's field get stronger, a race this small can't help.
  • 4 1
I believe the junior Women's is now a seperate event
  • 2 0
I think that separate event means a separate race at the same venue. Like how the Junior Men's is now separate from Senior Men's. When I think about it, they probably just don't get a run in Timed training. Most of the people from B practice don't.
  • 2 0
These results are provided by ChronoRace- does anyone know if they are going to be doing live timing for the race too, or is it still Tissot Timing? Tissot doesn't have the WC listed on their upcoming events...
  • 3 0
"Apparently Tissot is no longer timing the races, so the flow of results is a little less smooth right now." From Vital.
  • 7 6
So, 29ers are fast...but certainly not the magic bullet 29er lovers make it out to be. Still almost 3 seconds behind Atherton. We'll see when the final race times come in, but I don't expect them to be running away miles ahead. At this level, skill and having a big pair of kahunas are far more important than wheel size.
  • 1 0
 ...
  • 2 1
It's them who are fast, not their wheel sizes. Whether Greg was riding a 26 or 27.5 his time would still be very similar to what is shown above, only ever so slightly quicker or ever so slightly slower.
  • 4 2
Isn't that essentially what I said? Smile
