How can you publish Cathro's and Wyn's trackwalks, but not Cédric Gracia's?

Check it out. There are tons of great insights from the creator of the track himself.
You can pick some great tips for your everyday riding as well

he should be doing the helmet cam previews (a) he won't be that rusty so should be able to send everything (b) he must be dying to get his V10 out and try out the lines and (c) I believe he can talk and ride at the same time and (d) I heard there's a vacancy...

As a geologist and trail builder, I really appreciate your discussion of the rock, soil, and surface conditions... as well as the issues related to erosion. Best tech-focused content out there!!!!
  • 1 0
I live in Vallnord, and I always wonder why the mountain "swallows" water so fast.
Conditions change very quickly. It's weird when you do laps and track changes on every run.
Maybe you could tell me why?

This mountain is unique for mountain biking because of the natural gradient. You don't need huge machines and lot of work to shape a trail. From beginner to world cup, you can find a line somewhere already naturally shaped.

Plus 1 for that, I am an engineering geologist and spent my spare time digging clay into piles, soil type is as important as tyre compound imo!

I heard Whislter park has hire a soil tech to research optimum soil types for track building. It would be a great addtition to the DH broadcast if Ben Cathro or someone was trained in some soil analysis. Ie Texture, Emerson/dispersion class, Attenberg test, wetability, drainage/retention rates etc etc. Most of these test can be done trackside. Over time we'd get a pretty good data set of the soil profiles of the WC tracks. This would be a valuable reasourse for tyre manufacturers. Actually if any tyre Co. Want to hire me, I'd love to travel the WC testing the soil.

Pretty sure tyre companies have something called "Research and Development", in which riders, whom you may have heard of, test their prototype tyres, on world cup trails..... then name them arseguys
  • 1 0
@Waldon83: yeah sure, but are they trained in soil classifacion methods?
  • 1 0
It's likely not, but one could argue, would this qualification translate to creating tyres and rubber compounds that equate to more traction based on microbes, fungi, macronutrients, humus, topsoil, organic matter and the water table...
  • 2 0
 @AntN:
I'm all for Cathro giving a nod to what type of soil the race is on, but if had a sit though a soil analysis that would probably kill my mood..
  • 1 0
@davetrials: yeah for sure, you don't show him doing the analysis just the commentary from the results....

So, so good! Thank you very much, that's super insightful and you seem so genuinely happy and positive. A real feel good attitude!

What are the rules in any on teams doing 'track modification'? Is it common place? Or a frowned apon?
  • 4 0
I heard "track doping" has always been going on.
Riders would come during the night to remove a couple of rocks and roots troubling their minds.

Don't know what the penalty is though

@Spadluv: I was just wondering about this. Thanks for the post. I figured someone must have gone and "fixed" some things for their benefit. Especially with such close times. I would love to hear some stories.

At motocross its common to 'chicken scratch' ruts in corners or use them to mark lines on jumps etc. I wonder if its done in WC DH? I know I do it at local races.
  • 2 0
@AntN: From what I gather, they learn about every rock and root, but I don't know if they do any specific markings.
You have marshals all over the place. If you want to do something to the track, better to come back at night.
  • 1 0
@Spadluv: I agree, however I don't see anyone elses marking on the track. (Which is good for me) I'm not spray painting or anything crazy. I'll us a stick and scratch the line to take off a blind landing corner jump, or chicken scratch all the built up leaves off an inside line that never gets used. Maybe hard dig a rut through the skatey surface into the dirt on a blown apart berm. Stuff like that... all done with ya boot. It helps a novice like not having to remember every little thing.

 @Spadluv: That was mint. Thanks!

Hope he is going to keep his channel even if he will be hired by rb or pb.
The pb video he did last week was pretty dumb down, can’t imagine how bad a red bull feature will be...

This is one of his best.

Can someone get Ben a 'Cathrovision' hat ?

Also... grammer na#i - slippery, not slippy.
  • 3 0
Slippy seems to be a UK thing, listen to any British motorsport commentary and you will hear it a lot.
  • 9 0
 Born Slippy........

 it's English, init !

I've always wondered what a polish scouser accent sounds like.
  • 5 0
I'm hearing more welsh than scouse. Polish/Welsh Pete.
  • 4 0
He's definitely from the Polish Valleys.
