Riding a unicycle is 100% about the challenge. Any scrub can jump on a bike and get down these trails... It wouldn't be pretty though! I do both, muni and mountainbike, both have their pros and con's. One thing that's awesome on a unicycle is that "sketchy" feeling you get when riding loose/wet trails.
If unicyclist cared about what others think.... Well let's just say we wouldn't ride, we ride cause we love it.
Unicycles require insane skills, but it is not what I call fun. I can't ride more than 20 ft and maybe that has something to do with it, but flow is part of what I love about MTB, and I can't seem to get it or see how anyone could on a muni. Technical stuff can be fun, but not for the while ride.
I think it looks incredible and can't imagine how challenging it must be. I also couldn't stop thinking how it similar it looks to bull riding, imagining him on a tiny bull, riding in the worlds first DH rodeo with his hand up in the air like that he whole time. :-D Shoulda been in a cowboy hat and full rodeo attire. Boots and Spurs and all. Haha
I was riding at my local downhill and there was group of muni riders there. Two of them had gone to play unicycle hockey in Europe (yes that is a thing) and the other guys were crazy non the less. The stuff they were doing was amazing - 3m drop into a steep loose rocky down ramp!!!
Its neat to watch every once in a while but even when you're really good, it still looks severely limiting. I never watched a Kris Holm segment and thought, "well that could be enjoyable". Maybe one day they'll invent a crazy uni-cycle, who knows.
I'm not sure i see the point. as there is not freewheel you are limited on speed and it looks like you are just running down a mountain trying to balance on a wheel. i cannot see how it is more enjoyable than mountainbiking but hell, whatever makes you happy.
And mountain bikes are slower than motorbikes because they're limited to how fast you can pedal/how fast gravity decides you should be going. Your point?
Imagine the people walking down the stairs at even slower pace... Balancing on two feet. With no wheel or whatsoever. We should ban it. Immediately. Walking down the stairs that is. And unicycling.
For the past 5 years I've done almost nothing but DH, XC and road racing. I love every type of biking. However, before that I did nothing but DH/Freeride unicycle for three years. I know it's hard to imagine, but it's also a lot of fun. To those who call it "pointless" I'd counter "what is the point of riding your mountain bike in a big loop or shuttling?" Of course the point of all of these things is to have fun!
Well sometimes mountain bikes are more fun then motorbikes, like when ur motor gives up, definitely no fun! I own both n the simplicity of my bike n the fun it can deliver is why I havnt sold it, but even though motors blow up its all part of the game.. 2 stroke for life!
When I was 13 I did some yard work for my buddies dad, but instead of paying me, the cheap skate gave me an old unicycle he found at the flea market. It took me one day to figure it out. By the end of the summer I could ride skinnies, drop off picnic tables, and do crank grinds like the guy in the video. I eventually bought a nicer one and played with that. It's actually a lot easier than mountain biking. You go slow, bails are much less worse (believe it or not), and it's alot easier to navigate one wheel, and it's basically a pogo stick half the time, which any 10 year old can do. The hardest type of unicycling is freestyle, which is basically like BMX flatland.
I think the reason this wouldn't appeal to most people is because you're handicapping yourself. People don't like doing that in a sport. Downhill biking is probably the fastest way to get down a rough trail, faster than dirtbiking etc...
That's why people love it, because you feel like you're not hindered by the equipment, but only how skilled you are.
This on the other hand handi-caps you. And while I appreciate his skills, it would never appeal to me.
It is unique though, so maybe that's why he does it.
Of course a unicycle is "handicapping" yourself. It definitely appeals more to people who enjoy the challenge more than worrying about "it it the fastest way up/down?" I've also spent years rock climbing and that's definitely a sport where there's usually a faster way up then the particular super-hard route you're currently working. This is probably why a lot of mountain uni riders are also climbers. Still, I love all types of biking too. All the challenges are just a bit different, but that's what keeps everything fresh. Mountain unicyclists are generally very open-minded people who could care less about what other people thing looks cool/stupid/dumb, etc.
Unfortunately I watched the whole thing. I had to see it entirely before I scrolled down to hate and bash. Now, I don't have the energy because the pointlessness sucked the life out of me. I used to ride unicycle as a kid because I could do it, and I was good at it. Use that ability to learn coaster wheelies on a regular bicycle and leave the unicycle to rot. Please.
What part of the video does the lion tamer come out? I always like to see when the clowns all pile out of the Little car too, so could you tell me what part of the video that happens at?
For my 5 years of muni riding I've been welcomed into mountain bike races and groups here in New York state. It's all fist bumps, praise, positive comments, and camaraderie. I've always thought mountain bikers were awesome for that.
The large number of negative comments and bashing in these posts makes me think I'm lucky to live where I do.
I can kinda see how this would be fun, in the same way that skateboarding is fun. There are much faster ways to move across the ground, but the fun lies within the challenge of balancing on the thing
Funny. The 90's were full of mouthy kids arguing over rollerblading and skateboarding at local parks. I was one of them haha. If I could go back in time I would have to give myself a smack upside the head.
people to there own sport doesnt matter if you like it or not i dont know why people compare things saying it s not cool, dumb, fast, fun etc...seriously i dont really care. i will not consider collecting stamp but hey you know what i let people do it if they enjoy and dont bash them
As a mountain unicyclist, I can definitely say that this video makes unicycling look a lot faster than it actually is. If you can't ride one, just imagine doing a downhill course on fixie with a 1:1 gear ratio.
Man i just kept waiting for the vid to get cool or rad and halfway threw i gave up on watching some guy run down the mountain holding his dick. No flow and no tricks equals boring and uninteresting. I am sure it could be fun for the person doing it but the title really says it all, dh unicycling really isn't a thing
I thaught it was pretty tidy myself! am I going to rush out n buy a unicycle? No, I value my balls to much! but comeon, slagging it off just because you don't like/understand it? Really! what happened to just appreciating the skill of if and enjoying it! most of you sound like a bunch of bickering schoolkids!
I made it to the end and am left with the reaction of "what in the world did I just watch"... Gotta give props to him though, if thats what makes him happy, then keep at it! Atleast there's an industry to support the sport and I bet it's difficult as hell!
People sh*tting in each others mouths is a thing, it doesn't make it right though. Some things are just sh*t to watch, it even makes fat bikes look cool.
The video was actually much lamer than the downhill unicycling.
If I watched that exact video but they had replaced the unicycler with a normal mountain biker, I probably would have taken up unicycling as it would have made mountain biking seem extremely lame.
impressive! but not for me.
can't see unicycling a dh track being half as fun as proper bike.
i'd rather ride my dirt jump bike downhill with single brake if im looking for sketchiness
These fring things all have one thing in common. mountain boarding, tiny ski skiing.......roller blading, snake boarding....sure, you can do all these things, but KNOW it never flows...it's doesn't look good at all and never will. Granted..to each their own...
Mountain boarding is a good rowdy time, it's like downhill longboarding in the woods with some snowboarding thrown in. Sketchy as hell and mega fun. Agree with you on the tiny skis tho.
I mountain bike and I unicycle. But I street unicycle, which is kinda like skateboarding. I've tried muni before but honestly for downhill, mountain biking is about 100x more fun because it's so much faster and you don't have to pedal the whole way.
To all of you closed minded ass holes: 1. yes its a real sport. 2. no, it doesn't hurt your balls, we learn real quickly not to sit on them. 3. It's about challenge and fun not about going fast. 4. stop the damn hate. Unicyclists don't make fun of your sport. 5. I'm sorry I'm man enough enough to only need half the gear you need to do the same thing.
Freeride your an idiot..... To each their own , one wheel takes a lot of skill, balance , coordination , concentration. Maybe if you did some single wheel riding it would make your 2 wheel riding better. That's like saying 27.5 and 29 have no place in mnt biking... Bonehead
This guy has skills!!!!
Nice one....
The uni haters have no balance.
Too bad all that can be done to the bullshit replies is a negative prop.....some of these punks just need a slap on the face in person
I used to like watching Kris Holm's videos where he was riding trials and northshores, but to ride downhill on one doesn't make any sence at all. You loose all your speed and all your flow, so you're sucking all the fun out of it.
Also it looks awkward as hell and have you seen how his back responded to the impact when he jumped off the truck? That impact is like jumping off something, pointing your legs forward and landing purely on your butt. It's probably the worst thing you could ever do to your back.
I'm an open minded guy, but this is like buying an icecream, throwing away the ice and trying to eat the stick. Doesn't make any sence at all and it f*cks up your back. It just doesn't make any sence.
Unicycles will never catch on because the evil industry will never promote it, I am sure they will do a lot to stop it. You can always earn more on two wheels and everything that happens between them has to be more complicated by nature. Don't believe the hype! All they want to do is to steal our money.
No this is so cool, people used to laugh at me in my city cos i have a small left hand and i totes agree that its strange but i can ride HARD so can these guys, dont let disabilities hold you back
Wow! A few weeks ago I sat next to this guy in the gondola! Couldn't imagine what he was up to. This is sick, especially when you know the DH course he is riding on!!! Schoeckl DH in Austria is one of the steepest and gnarliest in Europe (next to Nordkette DH in Innsbruck of course).
Not denying at all that this particular discipline is difficult, but much like cyclocross, I fail to see the point in it.
Just buy a freakin' mountain bike...
Congrats on the skill, but I see no enjoyment out of it. No free movement and to make the video more interesting they showed the Nissan throwing up some dirt. Met a few unicycles taking up a trail once and it was slow, I just got irritated. Nevertheless, if it’s your passion keep going at it..
you ever sit on a bike or a motorcycle and sit on your balls? no right? or you learned how to not. well i've never sat on mine while unicycling so shut it.
So your insecurity about unicycling drove you to create an account to both defend and bash another sport? You just registered an account here and left 9 comments on this thread. I didnt even say anything negative about your silly unicycling. Grow up kid.
@kennedyl94: I wonder you haven't drowned yet in your own bath of swear words. If you revel in dissing others here, better go back to the hole you came from - and stay there!
cool tho (Y)

You can go faster doing some sick trail running with nice jumps and hopping boulders and stuff.
Can be said for literally anything that is fun. Not sure how this comment got ^^^
I say this based on experience. Not impressed.
Sooooo, are there FatUnis also?
unbike

Who cares if it requires skill? Lots of things require skill including hair dressing and darts but I don't want to see that on pinkbike either.
As if cycling wasn't dorky enough!
I was wondering why he was holding his dick the whole way down until the end & realised he has a brake under the saddle?

Second: imagine how good at mountain biking ( with two wheels) this guy would be!

Next level sh#t yo!
