Video: Enduro Ain't Easy - Some Hard Crashes and Bobbles From The EWS Course

Mar 26, 2015 at 23:49
by Pinkbike Staff
The track in New Zealand for the EWS is slick, rooty and full of off camber sections. The part of the track is a perfect example. I don't think the dude that crashed at the beginning knew where he was for a few minutes after hitting his head. We're glad he's alright though. Were Oton and Clementz fast enough?

 Old Chinese proverb
"If a carbon bike snaps in the woods
An no one's around to hear it
Do you even enduro?"
  • 53 2
 Exactly.
  • 53 6
If your riding alone in the forest, and your having fun, do the haters still make noise?
  • 52 3
only if youre on a 29r
  • 5 4
For the good of calling out shitty products... That bar was definitely a Renthal... This coming from a guy with 2 bikes and 2 fatbars.
  • 5 0
Aehehe, if they ever make COD (comment of the day), this is gonna be one of 'em! Big Grin
  • 9 0
For the good of calling out shitty comments...That bar was definitely damaged by an overtightened brake lever. Coming from a guy who fixes BMXs for a living and is well used to telling people "that didnt fail cos its shit, it failed because you put a three foot long extension bar on your allen key, then stood on it...."

2 days later and i still laugh when i think about nojzilla's proverb. good job.
  • 1 0
I hate haters but I hate hater haters even more. Ha, just kidding around Smile
  • 2 1
I dont think it is a Old Chinese proverb, @nojzilla
  • 82 6
I love these moments..don't get me wrong, I respect every single person(man or woman) who rode this part of this course. But here it doesnt matter what head angle your bike has, waht Frame material it has, what whell size and mostly Boost or no boost..ist about skill and having the balls.
  • 76 3
 ...and picking the right line
  • 49 0
@demo-dood, file that under skill Smile
  • 30 4
What are you talking about? I am certain if those guys had the 0.4% wheel stifness and half a gram weight reduction that boost has none of those crashes would have happened
  • 6 0
 Jerome did it perfect!
  • 7 0
@parnifel the more skill the less balls.
  • 7 1
not skill but commitment !!! if you don,t commit it does not matter how much skill or balls you have .
  • 3 1
If you've got no skill, you have no business committing. If you do, you're an idiot. Balls has nothing to do with it at all.
  • 2 0
takes commitment to develop skill when it comes to riding
  • 1 0
Takes balls to commit when you have no skill, it also takes balls to be an idiot and it also takes balls to recover in hospital for ages because you committed without the skill. Wink

easy to spot riders with XC backgrounds versus DH backgrounds... the joy of enduro!
  • 83 12
Pretty sure plenty of the riders crashing in this video aren't coming from XC backgrounds, like Bryan Regnier. Or is hating on XC back in style these days?
  • 44 5
well i didn't mean just crashing... i meant some taking more 'hoppy' skip around kind of lines...versus the dudes straight plowing through and holding on.
  • 11 4
 @ustemuf
So, w/o searching/checking on Google, who are riders with xc background...?
  • 23 9
The ones that chose not to wear full face helmets..Half shells make it easier to eat s#!t..
  • 6 2
Was that Isabeau Courdurier "plowing"? Looks like your farming analogy is actually efficient when done right.
  • 9 4
A decent full face costs about $60USD on CRC, surely that's a small/wise investment given the tracks/rain/race speed.
  • 13 1
strange.... I didn't see anyone wearing spandex. THEY'RE LEARNING TO CAMOUFLAGE THEMSELVES!!! That is a nasty section. It looks like staying high is the way to rippa.
  • 4 3
@Royal28 Oh yes old boy, XC is the new enduro.
  • 7 3
don't you mean enduro is the new xc? just with a cooler image. mostly due to the reduction in spandex...
  • 5 1
reduction in spandex offset by a rise in skinny jeans - the result is the same # of people in really tight fitting clothes.
  • 1 0
I thought everyone in the business have xc background? Crap i took a wrong start..
  • 2 1
@cuban-b well yes, but which would you rather wear pedaling a bike: skinny jeans with spandex, or baggy jeans with no spandex?
  • 2 1
Um? Baggy jeans with no spandex? Thats what I usually wear...
  • 5 0
I wear both simultaneously. My skinny jeans were $200 so I bought spandex shorts for $100 to go over the skinny jeans in order to protect them. And I go shirtless, gloveless, and pad-less of course, like a real man. And I never crash.
  • 1 1
Have you ever tried any kind of pants with spandex in them? It definitely gives you a lot more freedom to move and you don't have to worry about baggy clothes getting in the way. Don't knock it till you try it.
  • 1 0
 Sensitive
  • 2 2
Have you ever tried riding in a bra and panties? gives you more freedom to move than you could ever want.
  • 2 1
I'm being logical here. Don't be a dick.
  • 2 2
So am I. Logically, a bra and panties would give you far more freedom of movement than any of your sisters jeans, and even less chance of getting sucked into your chainring. Don't get so upset.
  • 1 1
the internet - it's serious business. super duper serious.
  • 1 1
 superdupermegaseriousness to the MAX! Bro
  • 30 1
 Jerome Clementz!!!
  • 8 1
 holy shit he killed it!
  • 3 2
CG dominated those roots tho Big Grin
  • 6 0
Apparently, speed it the key to that section!

That, or skillz =)
  • 10 0
Top line was the key to that section, I loved the girl that went down, she was laughing before, during and after
  • 24 1
If someone hits their head that hard and can't figure out where they are, they have a concussion. They are not alright and probably should keep off the bike till it clears up. I wish people would take head injuries as seriously as broken bones, because they are even more dangerous long term. That was a pretty slick section though and amazing how fast Clementz and Oton cleared it.
  • 19 1
I agree, but seeing as the guy snapped his bars I don't think he was riding anywhere after that anyways.
  • 33 1
Agree fully about the seriousness of head injuries. But.... the rider in question is a friend and is normally like that haha
  • 2 3
from my experience anytime one jumps up claiming they are fine , is a cover up for i,m hurt and won,t admit it cause it,s not cool
  • 24 0
"one of the hardest crashes you've ever seen"? somebody has never seen bender ride.
  • 19 3
Or watched a road race. Let's be real. These people are crashing at 10mph. Not 50-60mph, bombing down a mountain, or in a field sprint, on a road.
  • 6 0
The road is harder too. It can eat bikes for breakfast
  • 4 0
I think the bar snapped the same time as his head hit the ground. The noise made it seem the head impact was worse than it was.
  • 2 0
@LeDuke some of those crashes are insane with their lycra sanded off their ass cheeks and road burn down half their body.
  • 14 1
Love how when that girl crashes she is still smiling awesome.
  • 13 0
tighten your brake lever to tight? death to carbon bar
  • 10 0
The chappy on the SC Bronson (?) at the 1.00 mark gets his foot back on the pedal in the absolute blink of an eye, must be some ninja blood in his ancestors somewhere... Fair play the skills of that man.
  • 4 1
Giant Reign 1 my dear sir Smile
  • 4 0
but then again the Bronson a few seconds after is probably what you were on about - my bad
  • 5 1
@veero I think is Iago Garay on a Nomad,a very skilled guy. This is kind of natural law and you can see who is a really talented enduro rider...
  • 1 0
 Didn't clip in.
  • 1 0
@homerjm yeah that's Iago! Had the pleasure of riding with him, awesome guy!
  • 10 0
Cool how even the pro's hang out at a though spot and watch others fail... Now I do feel like I actually do the same sport... at least for a sec... Wink
  • 9 1
We asked for less overused techno/dubstep... but not like this... NOT LIKE THIS
  • 4 0
This music conjures up images of hipsters and single speeds. And now it's stuck in me head.
  • 10 0
 Ruthless.
  • 13 0
 Rootless. Oh, wait...
  • 8 1
 toothless
  • 6 0
 the dragon.....
  • 2 0
I broke my carbon bars in exactly the same way (hard lateral smack-down fall) and in the same place (actually between shifter and brake), and believe me, they did not break due to over-tightening (use torque wrench and under-tighten by a newton or two). There is something in that particular type of fall that carbon bars just don't like. I won't name the brand I was using, as they did give me a free crash replacement Smile
  • 2 0
I honestly feel like it's just the fact that the shifter or break clamp creates a rigid pivot point, so in turn the bars snap there because that is one spot with little to no flexibility. Thus causing a broken handle bar in the case of a fall.
  • 6 0
Damn, here I am at my keyboard and I just don't know what type of riding I'm supposed to hate on.... Should it be Enduro or XC? Someone please teach me to Pinkbike. What ever happened to getting on a bike and just riding?
  • 2 0
Hate on any bike that isn't your own bike or your dream bike... Unless your dream bike has 29" wheels, in which case you should go home... Cause you're drunk
  • 2 0
Easy, pick a wheel size and be a dick about it.
  • 18 11
Could also be titled: People riding with backpacks taking the wrong line.

Actually a couple didn't have packs.

 stupid kids are stupid.

Nico Lau, at 0.55. Just a mellow bit of single track.........
  • 1 0
Yeah, he looks SO relaxed and clears the section so well...
  • 5 0
Oton wasn't fast through there at all...
  • 3 1
 oton is at 27s
  • 4 0
Let's face it we have a good few things to pic from to watch on the home page but you know we jumped straight onto this lol
  • 4 0
I wonder what Sam Hill's line would have looked like if he did this section...
  • 3 0
The faster the better through that section it seems. But if it all goes wrong... Ouch!
  • 6 2
 im liking this song... Wink
  • 2 3
 really funny eh? hahaha
  • 1 0
for slippery roots and technical terrain like this, choosing a line is crucial, nice footage the pros experienced crashes like this. This trail looks like in Canada Alberta I rode.
  • 3 0
Calling out some of the best in the world. Good racing
  • 2 0
The guy on the orange Reign did well to hang on, just like Clementz on attempt #1.
  • 1 0
Holy sh*t, pause @0.12 , he broke his handlebar oO
He crashs a bit hard, but not at full speed, i 've seen worts !!
My money it was overthighten, look where it broke ...
  • 1 0
Mine broke in similar spot in similar way...and they were not over-tightened.
  • 1 0
i think either the lock on collar or the brake lever caused the bar to snap when it flexed on impact the break was very clean looking
  • 6 3
 That music made me laugh
  • 2 0
Isabeau on the flow better than many men !!!
  • 2 0
I wanted to see Dan Atherton handle it.
  • 2 0
Nico Lau was like "WTF...step away you amateurs!"
  • 2 0
 Speed is always your ally!
  • 1 0
That first crash!!! You could just see the disorientation when he popped up.
  • 2 0
It sucks when you get run over by your own bike.
  • 1 0
27s...green shirt...barely saw it was green!
  • 1 0
 That's Damien oton
  • 1 0
Shows the truly exceptional bike handlers.
  • 1 0
0:25 is the guy in GT yellow an atherton??
  • 1 0
Pretty sure that is a girl passing through with a smile! .. kills it!
  • 1 0
who was the rider at 1:26/27?
  • 1 0
 That was hilarious! Haha.
  • 1 0
Those must be all the people that "train" for enduro instead of riding.
  • 1 0
 that dude is fast!
  • 1 1
oh come on, stop copying Vital guys...you can do things your own way
  • 1 0
 JC - you animal !
  • 2 2
music is highly appropriate for this video haha
  • 1 2
@Protour @Protour no one had a demo8 here, maybe theres a reason? i bet its because the concentric pivot and BB are too low.
  • 4 2
or because a dh bike is in no way required on this fairly tame bit of track...
  • 1 2
 carbon shit....
