Brett Tippie was out at the Whistler Bike Park Opening weekend to get some laps in on the best lift assisted mountain bike trails in the world, and to meet the people too! Brian Finestone also has some news about the newest developments going on in the park. What a time to be alive!
I wonder if the have employed some geo techs. I am a geo tech inspector and work a lot with soils and compaction. Soils can fall in diff categories for what they are made up of and different soils have different moisture percents that can make them any where from wet and soupy to dry and dusty. Finding the perfect moisture percent is critical. The right soil with the right moist percentage and proper compaction techs will give you a rock hard surface. Granted I’m not saying you can eliminate brake bumps but I’m sure could be maintained better.
@krumpdancer101: what up fellow geotech! i assume they will mix some cement in with it. with the steepness of the berms and lips nothing will be perfectly free from erosion. curious to see how well it works.
Tippie for President... of like, the World! So much stoke, end of racial tension (except for Ebikes!), no nuclear arms race - just mountain bike races. End of obesity, even poor people are stoked to ride their $500 Kona Stinkys - world peace all because everybody likes Tippie. How can you not?!
So is dirt merchant temporarily closed or off limits all season? Also, when does the Garbo zone generally tend to open? Heading out end of next month and would be gutted if these weren't available to ride
June 16 for Garbo, snow is melting fast, wondering if they might get it going a week early. Probably depends on if trail crew has the time to work on stuff up there versus the other projects on the go.
Dirt Merchant lower is getting a full rebuild to match the upper section they redid a few years ago. I thought I had read late June/early July for that but can't remember.
@kevin267: thanks for the heads up. Massively disappointing but half expected. I’m sure there will be plenty of fun to be had either way! Super excited. Just need to not kill myself or the wife will kill me
I have no downhill bike which isnt a problem for whistler but the f*ck all money is!!!!! but I so want to go back to whistler, it been too many years .
Check out his page on Instagram @alpineriding . Audric is an insanely talented mountain biker, I think it’s awesome he’s sending it on this mountain scooter!
Our group always take their own bikes. We've traveled to NZ, France and Canada with them on many occasions, never had any issues. EVOC Pro bike bags are the go. Bike + bag are usually within weight allowances of airline checked baggae, with a small oversize handling fee. Overall much less expensive than hiring, and you have your own setup rather than an hire bike with unknown variables.
Glad to see all the happy faces, but i'm not sure that I like where mountain biking is heading... Its a commercialized perversion like Disney. I'm done. Selling all of my bikes with suspension. toodles mountain biking
I should just start in the below threshold comments with this comment: one has to be a huge TOOL BAG to sit near the lift for a few days simply to be the first chair up. Then an even bigger tool bag, like snap-on, craftsman and matco combined tosirh there and make it into a public service announcement for sponsors. Tippie should of told them how gay they are.
Whistler= - 1h30 min lineup for reach the chair, - brake bumps and poor maintenance of the trails, - expensive season pass with new rules for tow trail - tourist everywhere whom dont know how ride but ride black diamond trails because it made great pics on Instagram - insane mayor whom run this town,
I pass this year and ride Squamish and local mtn, Cheers
- Average wait was maybe 10-15 minutes on opening weekend. Zero line from 4ish onward to 8pm. - Trails were in amazing shape, grip and tacky dirt most places, lots of work was done last fall and this spring. Only a couple berms on A-Line had brake bumps it was mostly smooth. - Season pass is stupidly cheap given how long bike park is open, scale of terrain and compared to ski season. - Didn't get held up by tourists on any black/double blacks. You should be yielding to them on blues. - Nancy isn't running next election so you can have your vote.
Thats what you get for selling your mountain to Vail Resorts, the anti fun ski company that pulls your pass if actually know how to ski. SLOOWWW DOOWWN!!! Is all I think I heard the last time I was in Vail, but I wasnt sure so I kept going even faster so they couldn't catch me. Never going back to any VR mountain excluding Whistler.
You live in fantasy world, Just saying They spend month last year shaping hits for cranks but did not do maintenance for at all I do not ride A line as is for tourist, Freight train and dirt and other was horrible, We don't have same definition about amazing shape and lots of works , Look what Sechelt had done last year vs Whistler and you will understand the meaning of amazing work ,,,,
@Boardlife69: To be fair, every resort in the rockies have slow signs and people yelling at you to slow down in the runs that merge in. That's not exclusive to Vail resorts...
Opening weekend I don't think I waited more than 40 minutes for a chair, and that was during prime time. From opening to about 12 the average wait was maybe 10 minutes, and a few hours to closing you could literally go right to the chair with no wait. -Trails were in amazing shape, and the few spots with brake bumps were simply just there from last season. -A comparable season pass would be Silverstar which doesn't open for another month, and closes a few weeks before Whistler does. A Silverstar pass is $480, Whistler is $680. Given you get nearly 7 more weeks of riding time in Whistler, and not to mention the MASSIVE trail network. Honestly I'd say Whistler might even be too cheap for what you get... Plus 10am to 8pm riding every day... -I never see tourists on any of the double blacks, sometimes you run into the rider who's a bit timid of the rock on Afternoon Delight, but by no means do I see a family of tourists hanging out in the double black tech. Obviously you run into the odd newbie on A-line. But saying you're being held up by tourists on double blacks is a bit of a stretch....
Hating on the bike park is one thing, but spreading false rumours and facts is not cool.
@Katakalism: Im sorry if I offended someone feelings I do not know what Im talking about, -seasons pass winter/summer since 2012- You want paid more for riding there is the most funny things I never heard since the dud saying He waiting 10min in opening day, Peace ✌️
Bitch/Whine/spoiled much? I assume you applied for a trail maintenance job this season or at least gave them a few hundred thousand or so extra of your money to have the trails up to your specifications?
@bman33 Do Whistler really need more cash for doing good maintenance? You should check their book dud, Call me Whine bouHouHou When I paid couples hundreds I expected quality in return, Good for you if you satisfied with long waiting under sun and poor quality of trails, I had apply for trails maintenance dud, I do maintenance locally, Your assumption was good on that, I assume you riding minimum 50 day by season there for comments on this subject? Why not turning all big hit in gap and using dirt to reshape properly what need be done since years, Whistler need few hundred thousands more $ is the most funny things I never heard since ,,,
@hyouts: I go there each year, twice on some years for the last 6. While I don't have the luxury you do living in B.C., I do live in Colorado with multiple bike parks to compare it to. Only during Crankworx have I ever had to stand in line more than 10 minutes. That said, yes there are bomb holes in A-line and a few other VERY popular trails. However, the fact they maintain that amount of trails with that amount of traffic is pretty impressive. Are they super smooth DJ ready for hardtails? No. But, put that traffic on Squamish (ridden there a few times) on a daily basis and all that pretty loam will be blown out as well. Must be nice to be so spoiled that you think Whistler is 'poor quality of trails'. Show me any bike park with the level, amount of traffic and variety of trails as Whistler that is better and I will buy you a beer. I'm up at Crankworx this year.......maybe I'll see you there
@bman33: You got my point man, To many riders versus trails and chairlift, What maintenance are you talking about as last year trails was not maintained for month, supposedly because lack of rain, Jfyi- precipitation are almost 0% every summer, Again, call me spoiled Im in BC for living the dream, I used to think was at Whistler, That my opinion, you not force to accept it, Coast Gravity Park I will be there waiting my beer, You will not see me at the crank, Since DH World cut not presented, Just another Tourist attractions Cheers
English not my first language but you seem followed what I said. Do you want correct my texts before I send it as your snowflakes grammatical feelings will not be hurt ?
@Boardlife69: Actually, if you actually know how to ski you don't bomb down the beginner slow zone you take the other routes to the base and ski slowly for a couple hundred meters where you have to. Sad that they didn't catch you and pull your pass, you sound like a dangerous gaper which is why they control speed in those areas in the first place.
@hyouts: So you obviously didn't ride Whistler this opening weekend, how do you have any idea what conditions were like? They rebuilt lower Freight Train last year and upper DM was mint last spring/fall.
Yeah CGP is sick, but you are complaining about costs, how about that $70 ferry return trip for every single day you ride out there? And speaking of line-ups, I've waited at least as long on busy CGP days when it takes 2-3 shuttle cycles to work through the line and that's for a 2 minute blast down Coastal/Flight Deck. The trails are definitely amazingly built by the Coastal Crew guys and maintained really well but it's not the same scale as Whistler not even close.
Obviously You don't know what you talking about, And Freight Train was closed almost half of the season last year and many weeks year before, Why don't have DM mint all season long instead of couples weeks in the beginning and closing time?? Maintenance was poorly done last year, You have right to think anything you want man ,
@bman33: Smaller scale mean way less employees working there and also way less money for working the trails, but They are able to do weekly maintenance and trails always in very good conditions, You can defend Whistler if you want but they have the money and resources to do same but they just don't, They just don't care as they know chairlift will be full every weekend,
@hyouts: I will, I have a mate with a cabin, so no hotel fees for me. I will most likely hit up Coast one day while up in B.C. I am up in that area for a week every year at least. Be glad to buy you a beer....but not sure you are of age. I mean, to adults name call others hiding behind a keyboard? Very mature. Rubber side down man
