 @korev: I used to work for a company that wrote and edited SDS / MSDS info. It's amazing how much their stupid prop 65 cost business of all sizes. Just for new tests, paperwork, labeling, etc. You can't buy a solid billet of aluminium without that darn sticker on it !

 Kind of reminds me of those big stupid LED light bars a lot of bro-dozers have. Sure theres 24,000 lumens, but without high end optics, it goes nowhere (or everywhere, just very dim).

 I have a couple of the older Magicshine MJ-906 that are (claimed) 5000 lumens each and I gotta say that the light spread on them is great. I have several friends with different lights and my ones easily beat them on power and spread.
No idea about these new Monteer 8000s, but I've been super impressed with my Magicshines.

 I've tried the Outbound and been totally unimpressed and underwhelmed. Their focus on optics over lumens, is like some so called Chef, who serves you an hors d'oeuvre instead of a meal, and then offers excuses about the quality of ingredients when you go hungry. The light is fine for climbing and picking along, but becomes relatively useless once you get up to speed because it simply does not have the power to see down the trail.

 @cerealkilla: I know what you mean, but I recently picked up and Outbound EVO and am very happy with it. It's designed as a bar light only. Doesn't project light that far out, but gives a nice bright, uniform carpet of light that illuminates the sides of the trail ahead of you. You definitely need to pair it with a bright, focussed light on your helmet if you want to ride fast though. I chose not to buy their Hangover helmet light because I was worried about battery life and overall brightness.

 @Skooks: My main issue is that the Trail (bar)light is very easily overpowered by any spot helmet light that you use. The build and beam pattern are definitely great. However, any helmet light I choose almost instantly revealed the weakness of the Trail light. I feel that if they boosted the power by 30-40% it would be perfect. I also like to ride quite technical trails, which means lots of contours. I find lower-powered lights lack the power to reflect off objects to create ambient light that penetrates shadows. I'll take a bit of bounce-back over black holes any day. I really really want to support the little local company, but I think they need to step it up a bit to be considered in the same breath as the top-line units.

 @cerealkilla: Yeah that all makes sense. My understanding is that the EVO is brighter than the TRAIL version. I was riding Executioner last night and the light worked pretty well for defining contour shadows but I would prefer it to be brighter.

 I feel there is an issue with glare reflecting from my lights. I've read about our eye's not focusing blue light well and there is a lot of blue light in bright white LEDs. I've thought about tiniting with selective yellow but never actually tried. I guess there is a way to diffuse the blue light with some fancy optics, I am surprised this does not come up as an issue more often. Maybe I am just extra sensitive, I never leave the house without sunglasses!

 @Braindrain: You know what? I might just try light yellow lenses and see how she goes. Thanks mate!

 @Braindrain: Yeah I got into flashlights years back and started noticing the blueish tint made the terrain look flat. I much rather have less power with a natural or yellow biased tint than a more powerful blue tint.

 I have one and running at 8000 lumens is just stupid. What makes it great is that you can run the light on low (or crank it to medium for a big descent) and have ridiculous battery life.

 @dang3rb0y: just in case, are you running the brighter light on your helmet or the bars? I ask because if the helmet light is as bright or brighter than the bar light, it overpowers the bar light and therefore your eyes won't see shadows behind objects in the trail. Dial the helmet light down and watch the shadows appear and the trail is no longer flat.

 @DHsender4life: these things doesnt escalate like that. My 5000 lumen BLF Q8 is a little bit brighter than my 3600 lumen Lumintop FW4A. For comparison, a car headlight outputs around 1200 lumens on high beans.
The difference is that the imense body and 4 18650 batteries of the Q8 let it run for 2 hours over 3000 lumens, while the tiny FW4A (1x1865) run those 3600 lumens for 20 seconds. It might run at 800 lumens for over 2 hours tho. 3500mAh batteries.
Personally, I would buy a headlamp with 1600 lumens (nitecore hu60) and battery box so I can change batteries on the run, and my Q8 on the handlebar (i have a adapter for old go pro/dslr camera, and the Q8 has the hole for it, run with a strap too for added security). If I win this? F-it, i'm gonna use like there is no night!
Why do I choose flashlights over dedicated bike lights? Those things are sturdy and are already at peak development in bean, battery, modes, heat management, water resistance etc, except the fact you need to mount it to the bike.And that is the fun part!

 @fabwizard: i am in Toronto and e-mailed, phoned and nothing ever came to replace my light. I would NEVER give them one cent ever again.
I had other issues along with the battery bursting into a stinky mess. The cheap Chinese cables that connect directly to the old light sort of dissolved and shredded. I am am good with a soldering iron and replaced the wire and the light worked for another few months. Sure both were a total of 300 bucks and initially I thought the lights were rocking until the rubber gasket that attaches the light to the bar broke the second week using it.

I have never had an item die and had zero solution by the seller before and learned a valuable lesson on INTERNET sales in a VIRTUAL world.
Never again just like GT when I broke 3 frames JRA in 2001 once you screw me I am done.
I also do not trust a company that used bad lithium cells and almost killed some of us. The fact I now charge every lithium battery in my fireplace says everything. BYE BYE MOONSHINE.

I ride at night at least once a week for years now and no other issues. I own 6 of their lights at the moment.

Maybe i should start charging my lights in fire resistant location as well, you are not the first person i have heard about now.

 @fabwizard: I remember many people claiming great service and then like Kryptonite recalls the anchor fell and the rest of us lost out. I dont feel burned I used them until they died a sad death and now use a Lupine Pico and the lightweight Not lights they both work well and charge right, both a few years old. The Lupine was a sponsored gift for my Jamaica tours and even though I dont like head mounted lights it works well and can be bar mounted.

 Dual light source is the key to that. I've ridden just bar and just head but it's when you combine the two that you solve that issue. 2000 on the bar and 1200 on the lid usually both dimmed at 75% is plenty for me.

 No one is buying a $500 light for city pathways.
