Inside the Tape: Steep Tech & Big Gaps with Ben Cathro - Lenzerheide World Cup DH 2019

We're back at Lenzerheide for the second weekend of DH World Cup racing in a row. For this year the Lenzerheide track sees new sections and some very slippery roots. Heavy rain caused havoc during the track walk, but things are drying out and riders are getting up to speed.

Redbull, have you considered asking Cathro to help you with camera position and angles? Might make for even better coverage.
  • 1 0
Live cameras are placed to cover the most track, not the best angle on a given section (which would take 2 cameras just to cover a few seconds of track, so now do the math for 3 minute runs),

DH coverage is at an all-time high and Ben is leading the way.

Cathro just keeps getting better and better at this.

Danny Hart hits his chainstay/rear mech. Not his pedal.

Not particularly related to this video but I think in the latest DIALED episode Greg mentioned he "run a smaller tire now on the rear" - can anyone confirm or deny he's on a mullet?

Are you lurking these comments Ben?

Another great video as usual, anyway

 Smaller tyre or smaller wheel?
  • 2 2
@jay-me: he said smaller tire but it was in context of him wanting to stand the back end higher. I dunno, that's why I'm hunting for confirmation. Around 1min into the latest DIALED video if you want to check it out

 Smaller, i.e. narrower.

I've never edited video.....How does he figure out the times between riders when "ghosting"?
  • 1 0
He compares the duration of the clips I'd assume.
  • 5 0
If I had to guess, I'd say it's based on the number of frames. If you know the frames per second of the video (30fps or 60fps) you can click one frame at a time and do some simple math to get seconds.
  • 22 0
I shoot in 100 FPS, slow the clip down to half speed and export at 50 FPS. What that means is that every frame of video is equal to .01 of a second. I zoom in on the video pick a start and end point that matches as closely between each rider and count the frames. Laborious but the best I can do without a timing system.

@ben-cathro: on the subject of fps, thanks so much for switching to a higher frame rate. Makes a huge difference for the tracking shots

@ben-cathro: well that's ruined my image of you counting 1 banana 2 banana 3 Frown

@Preachey: I’ve always been high frame rate on the riding, just not on the track walk.
  • 1 0
@ben-cathro: get serious next year and go for master worlds man.
  • 1 0
@Preachey @ben-cathro: Seconded! the 50fps makes your videos so nice to watch.

Great, thanks for that, as always great insight. And I loved how Ben pronounced it to "Lenzerheidi" ;-)
