I'm happy for Max..... BUT, Tarmo was ROBBED!
  • 45 9
To me it was i'm or Eric
  • 108 3
Yeah was pretty surprised by that decision. Tarmo won every race by quite a bit and yet it didn't seem to mean a lot in the final decision. You kind of got that feeling as each event occurred. Not a lot about the racing but about some dramatic story. Kinda ruined watching the show this season. Honestly, as a rider, I don't care about following ppl on social media, and from a personal point of view think that the fastest most skilled rider should have won it. The last stage showed a 20-second gap between Tarmo and Max. In racing that's a big difference. From a marketing standpoint though or what a company might want for its brand, who knows though?!.
  • 55 10
Eric was robbed. Such a cool character and very well rounded rider. He gave his best and you could tell it.
  • 46 38
@gunners1: They never said they were looking for a racer. In fact they repeatedly said they were not. Sending racers to top level races is expensive and questionable in terms of ROI. Max's ROI will be easily measurable and way more cost-effective. It was clear since a few episodes that he was the favourite to people with some idea about marketing.

It's great that you personally don't follow riders on social media but then you're not the one they're trying to sell to and Tarmo's race results probably wouldn't affect your buying habits either.
  • 38 1
@bananowy: Yeah from a business perspective I totally agree with you. It probably is a lot harder to sell race results than riding drops, or riding certain lines. It just seems the decision was made from a business standpoint than a racing or ability standpoint. Don't get me wrong Max seems like a skilled rider, but the difference was night and day as far as results go. If Orbea wanted a rider that catered to that social media content wouldn't they have made more of the events about social media content, not the racing or climbing?

@gunners1: Of course the decision was made from a business standpoint haha; they're paying the dude 30 grand plus expenses and gear. No one's doing that for the good feels. However, you seem to conflate speed with skill/ability. I'm pretty sure Max has a bigger bag of tricks than Tarmo, so depends on perspective.

I don't know how it wasn't obvious to everyone that they weren't looking for an EWS elite male racer? They have Martin Maes. What do they need the slower Tarmo for?
  • 15 13
@whackflyer: Slower than Tarmo, boring-er than Max (and almost slower). He seems like a nice kid, but that's not gunna pay the bills.

 @bananowy: Barf!!!
  • 41 0
@gunners1: This wasn't a cometition for a new racer it was an interview for a brand ambassador. There is nothing wrong with that but does make it really hard to watch since the viewers and riders don't know the criteria that they are trying to meet.
  • 11 3
@whackflyer: Eric is a nice guy, but his best was 20 seconds behind Tarmo every stage.
  • 61 0
@bananowy: they kept saying it wasn't just about racing, but then like 8 out of 10 of the tests were racing oriented....
  • 8 0
@rcrocha: Yeah you can see that now. I agree. It makes it a little confusing as most of the events were races...
  • 4 3
@ponyboy24: Yeah that wasn't ideal. I said elsewhere that my guess is, they had the format locked down before they looked at Max's application. The hosts were clearly aware of the disconnect and uncomfortable about it throughout the show, but it is what it is. Orbea won't pay someone they don't want just to fit a show format.

So this was never about racing. All Orbea wanted was an influencer, which is fine except for the fact that the entire PinkBike academy was made for enduro racers…

@bananowy: Tarmo has style!.. style is easy to sell!..
  • 2 0
 @mentalz: I never said he doesn't. He's a fantastic rider.
  • 4 0
@bananowy: In every team you have faster and slower riders and younger riders have a place in those teams to learn from the more experienced and faster racers, just as Kelan Grant or Dan Booker are the younger and probably the slower riders in Nukeproof team next to the very fast and experience racer: Sam Hill, for example.
  • 6 5
LOL who cares, just some reality tv bs to get randos temporary exposure.
  • 22 0
@bananowy: I agree with you, but the end definitely made it feel like Max won before it started…which seems really fake from a viewer standpoint. People watch these “reality” competition shows because it appeals to a secret inner hope we all have of being able to live our own dreams right? To see that the competition didn’t actually make a difference in the outcome makes it feel like I just got taken advantage of as a viewer.
  • 13 0
Imagine being Gully and the ending theme of the show being about how they need to grow the brand in North America, Sea to Sky, and outside of racing.
  • 27 0
@gunners1: racing mattered so little they didn’t even show the final results.
  • 20 1
@TimnberG: probably would have been awkward to crown a winner that is constantly 20-30 seconds slower than the runner up .
"Max, you may not have won anything on your life...not even the last race...heck, not even a stage. But you sure won our hearts with that sea-to-sky bullshit. Congrats "champ"!"
  • 15 0
Totally agree, pointless having an out and out racer in the show if it was just a social media contest. Why have an Enduro race at all
  • 1 0
@TimnberG: it didn't matter shit, it's a drama show now
  • 2 0
 @gunners1: agree 100%
format should have been switched as the show focused on rider skill, stamina and speed.Yes they kept mentioning that the winner wouldn’t necessarily be the best rider which seemed odd.

Show should have been called “Pinkbike’s Social Media Academy” and should have focused on building and maintaining social media and spent one episode on rider skills. Of course that’s not exciting enough to keep viewers interested.
  • 5 1
@NicolaZesty314: they should change the theme song too if time tickin’ time tickin’ don’t matter lol.
  • 9 0
I bet Tarmo is reading contracts already.
  • 3 6
@bonkmasterflex: You are certainly entitled to your opinion. We all know Tarmo was uncontested as far as speed but he's not much other than that. I think Eric could advance a lot and get much faster in a short amount of time if he was on a good bike and had some solid instruction. Max is certainly fun to watch but it doesn't look like he'll ever make a racer. I like rooting for the underdog if you can't tell Smile
  • 2 6
flag whackflyer FL (Dec 21, 2022 at 19:41) (Below Threshold)
@ponyboy24: I know. Tarmo is uncontested as far as speed but it seems that everyone is stuck on speed and that's all. Eric looked like he'd be easy to get along with and looked to me like he could get quite a bit faster with some good instruction. Tarmo looks to me like a Vali Höll kind of rider. Full send till you get hurt and then not be able to race for a while, whereas Eric looks pretty consistent. My two cents. I'm happy for Max.
  • 1 0
@gunners1: can we have the same tactics for the World Cup downhill racing - that would bring some surprises in results
  • 9 0
@whackflyer: the series of tests performed in the series was primarily about racing speed, thus why everyone is 'stuck on speed'. Even the mechanics test was targeting the riders ability to maintain/repair their bike through the course of a full day enduro race.

You say Tarmo is full send. Did he look out of control or did he crash in any of the tests?

Yes Eric is consistent, agreed, but consistently 20-30 seconds off the pace per stage = 3-4 minutes over the course of an enduro race. That isn't professional level riding.
  • 2 1
@whackflyer: are you suggesting the Orbea isn't a good bike? They were all riding the same bike. Your excuses are ridiculous.
  • 2 0
@gunners1: yeah what's the point in having so much racing if it counts for nothing. Basically they want an influencer. I mean come guys!!
Is that what we want to promote.
  • 1 1
@ponyboy24: So then why did Max win if that was the point of the challenge? I'm not trying to argue with anyone, I was just stating my viewpoint! I'm not saying Eric was a better rider, I just personally thought he would make a well rounded racer with some practice. Tarmo has my respect and he's a great rider, I just get a little tired of all the Tarmo fanboyism.
  • 1 0
@Edendino: Not at all. I think people know what I meant. Wouldn't mind an Orbea myself.
  • 1 0
Tarmo just announced on instagram that he's going into the army...I'm not exactly sure how this works in Finland but I have to imagine he must have known he was doing this for at least a couple of months. Perhaps that played a role in how things played out?
  • 3 0
@pjgwin: The conscript service must be done before turning 30, so there is time, but usually the easiest option is to do it as early as possible so it won't affect studies, work, or a pro biking career later on. You can postpone it for a good reason, but I would assume he knew his planned schedule at the time of shooting PBA (and it was OK with the production/ terms), or it may have felt like the right time for his service period now that he didn't end up having any obligations with a contract.
  • 194 3
So basically Max won before the academy started by having more followers? Props to all the stuff he does and congrats.

But also now everyone knows just how much faster Tarmo is.
  • 36 50
flag bananowy (Dec 20, 2022 at 11:09) (Below Threshold)
I think it's a bit reductive to say he just won because he had more followers. He's doing great stuff in a space where Orbea hasn't been present. They already have a great EWS team, why would they get a second Martin Maes (only slower)? Now they have a top freerider in additon to racers. Makes sense. And I don't really think saying Tarmo is faster is a jab at Max that you think it is. Pretty sure he doesn't care about that as he won't have to race again.
  • 25 30
flag Chippps (Dec 20, 2022 at 11:33) (Below Threshold)
Orbea has plenty of fast riders. Even though Tarmo seemed great, adding him doesn't move the needle for the brand unless he's a guaranteed win every weekend which is unlikely. Max may be slower but he is a lot more fun to watch. If it was my company, I'd do the same thing.
  • 83 3
The way they edited that was hilarious. Tarmo basically asked that and then they show Max winning... it just seems like an odd choice from an editing perspective... It pushes the narrative that the whole competition is BS and they knew from the beginning...
  • 26 0
@bonkmasterflex: in the editor’s head Tarmo asking that meant he understood that instagram following has an effect on the result of this competition, so they showed it. I think Tarmo asked it because he wanted to have a chance at winning.
  • 21 0
@Chippps: I think Tarmo could have easily been coached a bit on the social media side. I would easily follow him ripping up some trails.
  • 6 1
@Chippps: Yeah if you go look at Maxs insta he's hitting all the cool shit in BC that people like watching. He's not going to be a flop for the brand, its just a shame that the brand changed their idea so much.
  • 31 0
You said it. What was the point of the entire academy and challenges? Max didn't really stand out on any of them yet he won based on his prior portfolio?
  • 2 0

  • 13 1
@bananowy: lol top free rider. Plenty of riders more talented and not even close to top….
  • 23 1
@platajes32: I don't like the sketchy 'just gonna send it and hope for the best' style of Max, but kinda understand the entertainment value. Like said before, he didn't really shine in ANY of the challenges and still won. Series went seriously south this year.
  • 1 0
Yeah seems like that is the case..
  • 2 2
@rrolly: also have you seen his Instagram? Rips shit soooo hard! I followed him before he was on PBA and man, the dude is fast...and a bit reckless to say the least
  • 7 0
Yeah, I though Max would win but felt Tarmo deserved to win. Max didn’t seem to perform all that well in any of the challenges, including the content challenge. Tarmo was consistently pinned. I reckon they’ll both do well out of the academy regardless and wish them well.

Nothing against Max, seems like a rad and very likable dude but what a waste of 10 episodes. Why not pull any stylish rider on instagram with 5/10K followers and give them the contract and don't bother putting a show together.

A performance base programme were the person who performed the best in every challenge (almost) didnt win. I thought Tarmos video was the best but this is person preference.

The way this season has gone, I'll give the next a miss which is a same as I've been so excited waiting for this.

You said exactly what I was thinking.

Not trying to take the win away from Max, but why would you run a series full of different kind of competitions, but then dismiss the CLEAR total winner of them all.

What was the point of this series again?

PS. I'm not worried about Tarmo. He has already proven himself in the EWS and now everyone knows who he is. Now he just doesnt have to represent a brand that doesnt care about real race speed, which Tarmo is full into.

It would have been more interesting if they pitched this to a bunch of social media bikers and started there. It'd be way more of an even playing field and more interesting from a viewing perspective. Why have races at all if the results don't matter?
  • 22 1
Took me the 1st episode to know this season was a total waste of time, as far as I'm concerned PB can cancel next season.
  • 11 5
@bonkmasterflex: For sure, that could end up quite entertaining. My guess is that they had the format and schedule already locked down by the time they noticed Max applied again and took a closer look at who he was. At that point they had to work with the challenges and other applicants that they had available, but knew they didn't want to pass him up. I'm sure they were aware of the disconnect, hence all the prep talk about not looking for the fastest racer. When a company is spending 30k+ on a walking billboard, they won't let a bit of inconsistency in a small youtube show get in the way of meeting KPIs.
  • 12 15
@bananowy: get f*cked, you and your comment that you keep posting here over and over again, you troll

Yeah, I'll skip next season if Orbea is still the sponsor. It seems like they meddled in every aspect of the show this season, to the detriment of the show. I picture the director rolling their eyes every time the Orbea guy made a "suggestion".
  • 25 2
I understand your perspective. And I don’t have anything to do with Orbea or Pinkbike. I’m just a random guy from Utah that loves riding mountain bikes. But hear me out on this. Regardless of who we wanted to win or who we were supporting on the show, isn’t it great that Outside/Pinkbike spent a ton of production money to showcase a bunch of riders and elevate them to a broader, global stage? When looking at Pinkbike Academy from that perspective, there are no losers here. Orbea got the content creator/rider they were looking for and Pinkbike showcased Tarmo for the insanely fast trail ripper that he is. For sure that guy got more exposure and notoriety from the show and will probably land a killer deal that was directly related to this show. Plus we got to meet and see Eric, Mia, Ares, Brody, and Brittany and the rest shred lines and show us their personalities. I bet a couple more riders will land some support from this. And then, if we all watch it a bunch and support the show (even if that feels a lot like drinking the KoolAid) it will pave the way for more mountain bike content that will build the sport. So even though Tarmo and Eric and Mia and Brittany and the others lost, they all kind of won anyway. Right?!

  • 7 1
Agreed. I didn't really feel a connection with any of the racers. Yeah some seemed chill and easy to root for like Ares for just generally being a good person, but that's about it. Tarmo was fast and well above the pack, but they kept saying they aren't looking for fastest which made the show a bit more boring. I feel like what little social media interaction he did do, he performed great in it and has more room to grow compared to Max. Also miss Jason Lucas hosting, but since he left Pinkbike, I understand they needed a replacement. The whole thing seemed very meh.
  • 2 0
Completely agree. This was by far the worse season and the new format was woeful.

I could not get away with the presenters...I can't remember the female presenter, but that was not a good fit.

The goals and success criteria for the challenges were constantly undermined by this undertone of "we're looking for more than just..."

Why did you wait until the last one or two episodes to put an interview with Orbea saying what they were looking for?! Surely that's the intro of Ep.1? Set the scene and all that?!

Same as other comments - you didn't get to know the riders and see enough of them playing to their strengths. Maybe the episodes were too short or maybe it was too much time spent on pointless judge deliberations.

Judges' deliberations were meaningless - so formulaic; make sure everyone is mentioned as both a strong contender and a bottom of the pack so actually, you say nothing.

I LOVED Season 1 & 2 - so exciting to see opportunities given to amateur riders.

I hope he gets picked up! It's been cool to see Evan an Flo do well in the EWS.
  • 14 0
@bonkmasterflex: @bonkmasterflex: Yes, but you can see how Orbea really didn't want to make any effort to develop Flo to be a contender as an EWS racer. They made her do E-EWS because she had a better chance at podium results there and E-bikes are money makers. Flo had to do EWS as a side job when it didn't affect her E racing. The sad part is that if they had made an effort to develop Flo for EWS she could potentially turn into a regular top 5 finisher, with occasional podiums, instead of top 10. Flo deserves a better team too.

Agree. Eric was the best well-rounded rider of the bunch and Tarmo was the fastest. Period. And if the social media content would have been highlighted as such a high priority from the beginning pb would have gotten another field of applicants I guess.
Max shoes nice riding, but better slows it down. Every second insta video shows him barely making it down features with some really close calls. Basically no good self-assessment of skills. Maybe he is showing only the close calls, I don't know... But I think at some point Orbea will loose him for several months because he will hurt himself badly. Don't forget the incredible skillset of Barelli/VanderHoek/Metailler when riding their lines.
Just my 2c.

If Max won for being more free ride oriented the show probably should have added more emphasis on free riding. Tarmo won nearly every event but not the show? I understand why Orbea selected who they did but the show didn't really reflect the brands motivations despite all the "total package" comments.

perhaps having the edit challenge being more than 30 seconds long. Give them a week to get a proper piece and have that process be half the seasons run time.

My problem with this show is that there is no "Academy" in there, besides the name.
There used to be this reality TV show on the French TV called "Star Academy" (there is a new version but I don't know if it is as good). They used to put a bunch of talented singers/dancers in a castle for a few weeks and have them train on all professional aspects of being a "Pop Star". They had amazing teachers (pro dancers, pro singers, choreographers) spend the whole time with them and prepare for the weekly live show, and on top of that they had mega Pop Stars visit them and perform with them (to cite a few, Celine Dion, Ray Charles, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, ...) and it was amazing to see the contestants mature and become real show biz professionals as the weeks went by. There have been a few seasons and most of the winners have become big stars in France and beyond. Of course there was still all the drama needed to sell the show, but it was a real Academy where people learn something and compete.
In the PBA show, they did not teach them or train them, just test them and subjectively select eliminate them (or they did not show the training maybe). We do not see a progression, the left at the same level that they came in, with a bit more exposure but that's it. I think it is a big waste of opportunities for the contestants and for the public to not see the schooling part of an academy.
Maybe you can improve on that next season...
  • 2 0
It's bs from start to end. Every episodes are recorded in 2 weeks. No improvement, no teaching, it's just showing who have the most followers and bam! Followers winners.

This season was just disappointing. I feel like they had all these "Challenges" to make it seem like they were pitting the contestants against each other, but at the end of the day, Tarmo more or less beat Max in every challenge, and ultimately the decision was made on Instagram followers, connections, and social media reach. Which of course is a valid metric if it sells bikes, just feels like that decision was made before the "Challenges" even started. Like what was the point of the entire academy then...? It's like applying for a job where the 4 rounds of interviews all go great, and then ultimately they hire a less qualified candidate bc he's friends with the owners son. I am thinking this is more of a problem with how it was presented than what actually happened, but without being able to see all the behind the scenes, that's kind of the impression I left with. Don't think I'll watch the next season tbh.

@st-alfie: Agreed. The hosts were terrible this season. The show's ran its course and hopefully dies off. I won't be watching another regardless.
  • 2 1
@st-alfie: interesting that you felt that way. I thought he did a solid job with an admittedly not great script.
  • 3 0
@st-alfie: yeah, he wasn’t funny and the way he interacted with contestants as he eliminated them was not necessary.
  • 2 0
@steezysam: I not sure how you have come to that conclusion. He's confident enough but definitely not natural in front of the camera. Everything comes across forced and without charisma. That's what I would be like as a host, and that's why I'd be a terrible person for the job.
  • 18 1
Wow, this was a surprise, my bets were on Tarmo or Eric. Although Max has great style, I don't think he suits the so called "FULL PACKAGE"-description. Another surprise was again Orbea's criteria for the winner, as it is still unclear to me, although winner has been chosen.

All the best for the all the contestants, keep shreddin'

 Not a surprise at all.
  • 15 0
@bananowy: Oh yes it was. Max only shined in one of the competitions. And imo the video lacked that "wow"-factor for me as I was expecting a lot based on the hype amd talk in the first episodes. And this is not to take anything away from Max.

The biggest problem with this season is that if Orbea is looking for that social media content creator, they should have selected the contestants and competitions accordingly. So in this case mtb influencers and competitions to measure those abilities.

@sarms: As I said, not a surprise at all. At least not to anyone who had any idea why Orbea sponsored PBA in the first place and took a look at the competitors outside of the show.

@bananowy: Do you think all episodes of racing and testing was worth the watch when they pick winner by instagram followers and freeride skills?

@Stimpe: How on earth is your question relevant to me saying I wasn't surprised with the winner? Weird.

I'll give answering it a shot though:
It's something I watched with one eye while doing other stuff so hard to say if it was "worth" anything. It's not like I sacrificed quality time with the wife to watch PBA lol. It was as much worth my time as stuff like video games etc., things I do when I want to turn the brain off for a bit. I honestly don't care what the challenges were, they might as well have had a knitting episode. It was a time-filler that would obviously end in Orbea choosing whoever fit their plans.

I understand how it could make you upset if you were genuinely invested and believed the challenges had anything to do with winning the show. A bit naive, but understandable. Especially that you're Finnish so you kinda had a horse in this race.
  • 14 1
@bananowy: For someone who claims he wasn't invested, you sure have A LOT of posts on this.
No one is saying they don't understand why the Finn didn't win. Everyone is saying PB and Orbea did a bad job i.e. the format was pointless. There's nothing to argue but who knows if you'll let that stop you.
  • 18 1
From the beginning, I don’t think there’s anything Tarmo could’ve done to win this. Without all of the social presence, he never actually had a chance, in spite of throwing together a killer edit during the contest.. And being insanely fast. Nothing against Max though because that Dude can shred.

Pinkbike is becoming so superficial, it’s cringey. Way too much emphasis placed on social media presence. In an era where people are like: “bro! Just get outside and ride your bike“, this sends the opposite message. Pinkbike Academy just paid Max for his follower count.
  • 2 2
It's not Pinkbike who decides, it's Orbea who's doing the hiring. Think about it like your running a business and that business is selling bikes. Max and Sarah were the top pics from the start.

@sanchofula: I get it and that’s fine. Just call it something else… like what it actually is. Save everyone their time.

why was the final challenge a race? It had nothing to do with what Orbea wanted... They didnt even share the results. kinda pointless no?
  • 19 4
From Orbea's standpoint that pick makes total sense. They've picked fast riders the last two seasons, and have a solid squad on the EWS currently. Anyways, the winner was undoubtedly going to be picked up by GT or Norco or something eventually, makes sense to get ahead of the game... Looking forward to seeing an Orbea at Rampage someday soon.
  • 54 0
But why run an EWS like competitions if you're not picking EWS racer but a freerider and Instagram presence? This is what baffles me.
  • 5 0
 @kiisseli: damn right!!
  • 9 0
@kiisseli: They obviously wanted a punchinello doing some adds and cool stuff to add followers. Has nothing to do with EWS whatsoever.
I think Orbea should come up with a official profile what they are looking for (if not a pure racer), so that it is crystal clear to the audience from the getgo.
  • 17 2
The mountain bike industry, and most industries are just like Hollywood, hiring actors, cause that’s all social media is, good actors, putting on a show. Stay off social media kids, you’ll be more unique and a better person. Who cares if nobody knows who you are, don’t sell your soul to the internet, keep it real, and live a real life.
  • 17 2
I dont know if Orbea really needs Max, though. I mean, they have Gully. Dude is an OG freerider, and also lives on the North Shore. I guess he drew their attention to the freeride scene and the value of an ambassador in BC.

Was the point of the show just to launch a brand ambassador? Seems strange to focus on brand ambassadors with companies like Specialized firing all their ambassadors.

Im assuming Orbea paid to be the title sponsor of PB academy? This whole event seems like it cost them way more money than simply going on Instagram and doing a little 'market research'....

Also, PB Academy has no purpose and needs to die. The whole thing was utterly pointless. People respect PB less for having created such garbage. Maaaybe it brought a little more attention to the runner ups in the competition, but Max didnt need to be on the show to win this.

PB you guys just showed us you dont know what you're doing and shouldn't be creating series like this. Katie Burrel had no business being on this. She's not funny outside of her one-hit wonder 'how to be a female mtb-er' video. She lacks the personality and on-screen presence. Definitely not her forte.
  • 13 0
What a train wreck for Orbea. Look, if you're trying to hire a sales rep don't make your guy get his arse kicked in competition week after week, and don't have your people on the show constantly insinuating that none of this matters because they have already selected the winner by social media following, and most importantly don't use your fugliest coloured bikes for the show.
  • 13 0
congrats too all of them. just confuses me why every challenge was about racing for them to go pick a media squid. 1st and 2nd season were fastest wins. it was more about racing. now they change it. if they wanted a media squid should have had different challenges just my 2 cents not that it matters. I would rather watch The Adventures of Eric. then max hitting a big line.
  • 13 1
Don’t get me wrong, what Max can do on a bike is incredible however he’s won because he already has a large audience on Instagram and will essentially give orbea a better platform. I’m not sure skill or ability ever entered this year’s deliberations. I’d even go as far to say it was always going to be Max when orbea saw the dollar signs

He does have a large following, but I don't think skill wasn't a factor. He sends it huge, which is exactly why he has that following in the first place. It's not like he's popular because he's selling toe pics lol. Orbea already has a full EWS team, why would they get another elite EWS man slower than Maes? They made the only reasonable choice.

  • 10 0
@bananowy: I didn’t mean that he isn’t skilled or talented because he clearly is. I meant that if the judging, based on what has been a full enduro race series, was about skill then tarmo is hands down the best rider. It would be a different story if pb academy was a freeride competition. Considering that wasn’t the outcome it’s clear orbea just see Max as a revenue stream rather than the rider we all see him as. He’d be so much better off with a brand that embraces rampage and all that freestyle is in my opinion
  • 8 1
@bananowy: Who knows what kind of team Orbea will have next year. Has Maes signed on for another year? Will Flo re-sign, or will she go to a team that will let her race primarily EWS? Evan Wall only stayed on for one year. Anyway most teams have a stable of riders, preferably at different points in their career. You have veteran riders and up and comers. Tarmo would fit the up and comer category, which is what this show bills itself as being able to discover.
  • 11 0
Just wondering, if it was all about Followers and Free Ride edits then why did they even invite Tarmo? Just find 10 Free ride folks with followers and have a competition around that. The opposite would hold too, if you are looking for a racer you wouldnt invite Max, find 10 Tarmo's and have a competition.
  • 1 0
Yeah, I still enjoy watching the shows, but if they really wanted a freerider to showcase Orbea in the sea to sky, then they should have shortlisted freeriders who wanted to live/work in the sea to sky and have the tasks based around that.
Hopefully they'll either be looking for a racer next season or they adjust the show to match.
  • 4 0
 @thingswelike: spot on!

Orbea decide in advance what type or rider you are looking for. Invite 10 riders who have potential in that riding segment. Put those 10 riders through a set of tests based on skills relevant to that segment of riding!
  • 12 0
Make a whole show to just pick a dude they could've sent a DM to in instagram since all they want is an already stablished influencer. Ridiculous how they managed to make the worse season yet.
  • 11 0
Max is a legendary rider and deserves anything the bike world gives him putting his life on the line for his clips. But what was the point of having that last race where Tarmo clearly smoked the competition but it counted for nothing.
  • 10 0
SO MUCH BOLLOCKS, definitively not buying an Orbea, a brand that doesn't stand for their value. All the challenges were supposed to be toward being a successful EWS racer. Then they pick a nice guy pseudo-influencer that's neither will compete at rampage or at EWS..

What was the point of watching the whole season on racing challenges if the winner was picked on Instagram followers. Also, how can some amateur nobody rider have 50k followers, he's obviously just bought a large portion of them, talk about a brand being dimwitted.

If they were looking for a freerider from the start, they should have have more freeride contestants and focused the competition more around that. A waste of some of the other talents chances. I hope a team out there sees the opportunity Tarmo presents, and makes an offer (edit: apparently he is already with Specialized on the EWS - good to hear).

First,.. Pinkbike, I appreciate that you're creating free content. If people don't like it, don't watch.
BUT, this year's "contest" was just a really lame commercial. Sorry Gully, Orbea just hired your replacement.
Maybe next year's show will be a week-long freeride selfie battle on e-bikes?

If they are looking for someone in a certain space then they should have all contestants at least be partially in that space or want to be in that space. Tarmo wants to race so why was he there since he realistically couldn't win unless he was told to be a freerider and send some crazy stuff during the competition.
  • 3 0
And he probably would have sent some crazy stuff. He did well in the media challenges.

Tarmo got robbed but will surely get a contract with any team in the near future because he is younger and faster than the rest on this show. Good luck Tarmo, I can't wait to see how your performance will just get better as you gain experience in the EWS races!
  • 8 0
Social Media is their only judging requirement. And NOT the fastest and most talented rider. Sad for Orbea. TARMO GOT ROBBED
  • 8 0
We might all have different ideas on who was robbed, but can we all agree this was the worst season yet?

What a weird season. Hard to watch at points. Tried to watch through to the end just to see who won. Tarmo doesn't seem like a robot at all. Seems like a great guy and fast as heck. I guess that's where the sport is at now. You gotta take show over pure performance.
  • 6 0
The whole nonsense of being judged on making a video seems goofy. Orbea's got "people" for that. Someone's employed to rides bikes, someone is employed to take photographs and video, no?
  • 8 0
Why all the races if the winner was picked by number of followers?

Pinkbike just lost it´s credibility!
  • 12 8
That was unfortunate that two women were eliminated first so we were in suspense over which of three white men would be selected. I am also disappointed that all contestants that did not speak English as a first language were eliminated based on their social media presence. Mountain biking needs to solve its diversity and inclusion problems, but this season of the Pinkbike Academy has exacerbated them. I think Pinkbike should solicit more input from diverse riders to avoid this in the future. It appears that Pinkbike tried to appear inclusive to gain recognition for being diverse, but in the end they were not supportive and understanding the differences among people from different cultures/backgrounds/genders. This is counter active to to improving diversity in mountain biking.
  • 1 0
Plus they showed the flag last episode, and Mia talked about inclusivity. So yeah...
  • 1 1
The people are "mountain biking", and I don't have a diversity and inclusion problem, nor a quota. Like most, I meet people where I live, who participate in our local volunteer organization's trail workdays, after ride gettogethers in the parking lots, etc. The mixture of race or genders is what it is and I'm no worse off either way. Social engineering is stupid.

This is great news for Tarmo. He gets to sign with a major brand and now gets to pick. Dude is no joke. I bet he will end up with more than what PBA offers. He also would have been poached after being on the team for a season so no long term situation for Orbea. PB needs to go back to the drawing board for the format of this series.

The way this was handled seems like it has hurt Orbea. No one who was watching seems to think it was done sensibly.

Felt like they upped the production but lacked in substance this year. The only personalities we got were in the credits clips. And if Orbea wanted a free ride Instagram guy it would’ve made more sense if they picked the challenges and riders around that.
  • 4 0
Dropped out after 3 or 4 episodes, this just wasn't anything like the previous seasons. And from reading the comments, I did the right thing.
There already are millions of excellent riders with fantastic editing skills posting "content". They will shortly be sent on their own spaceship to discover a new planet for the human race.

Orbea makes nice bikes, but I'll never buy one because of the really poor dealer network rep and service they have here. They should spend their money fixing that first.

As for personalities - keep in mind that a lot of people will prefer Tarmo's personality. MTB needs a Kimi R.!

My kid, I think, said it best,”it’s disappointing that the show ended not being about biking but social media…”

I guess this is about marketing for Orbea and not biking.

I've thought this for the last 2, now 3 seasons. This season just pounded it home for me. This series really REALLY needs to have 2 winners, 1 each in the men's and women's categories.  I think the decision was mainly taken by Orbea for Max to win, even the guy in the video explained that with the ability to have a whole bunch of ready made followers. In my opinion though for the nature of the show, fitness, speed and winning races all this shows is Orbea have no confidence in being able to win races as your bikes are slow so going for the influencer angle to win sales. I won't be buying your bikes...

Tarmo is the real winner. He will pick up a pro contract out of this for sure. Well... Let's hope he does or there is something seriously wrong. He has just had character exposure for a few weeks which is priceless, shown he can create the best video content and as a result of this result will probably double his Instagram following and hopefully make a great stand in EWS with his new team..... Wait..... Stop the bus... EWS and a 2 day format doesn't exist any more! What, why would someone do that to the best form of racing! UCI fixed the outcome of this because they knew they were gonna destroy EWS and video content would be king even more. Problem with video content is Remi... Propain snapped up the king of content for trail riding. For goofing it's Pilgs who is a legend over here. For going fast with crazy style it's moimoi.

  • 1 0
It was kinda cool to see Max win and I can see why he was chosen. He is clearly skilled and has a consistent positive and professional attitude.

I personally thought the previous seasons were more entertaining to watch though. Why make most of the competitions so race focused if that's not necessarily what they're looking for? Adding focus to their living situation together seemed kinda silly too and made it feel more like some kind of MTV reality show. Something that might freshen the show up and could be cool is showing more of what they're doing in between the competitions to prepare and how invested each of them are in the challenges. I think what made previous seasons more entertaining for me was seeing the struggles and how much work everyone puts in trying to ride at these levels.

Oh boy... let the comments BEGIN!

Don’t hate the players, hate the game.

Orbea guy needs to get a new job, riders who win races get the attention.

Orbea: "please do something cool on our eBikes that will sell them to the youngsters!"

They're trying to get moto converts to E-bikes. E-bikes are where the money is for MTB companies. Slap a $300 motor and $300 battery onto a $4000 MTB and you can sell it for $8000 to people who wouldn't normally ride a MTB.

@Fill-Freakin: GNCC/hare scramble moto riders use e-bikes for track "walks" because you're allowed to pre-ride on a bicycle but not a moto. Maybe they're a significant market share? Seems doubtful as eebs cost more than dirt bikes, but I guess if everyone else has one and it's an advantage, you gotta have one....

Will there ever be an XC academy???

I'm waiting for the pinkunibike academy

"Just another day riding your bike"

All those folks are super cool, I would have rather seen a woman chosen, but I get that they're looking for someone who will sell bikes and most riders are men.

My pick was Brittany, I think she presented well, has a strong racing background, and will appeal to a lot more folks.

some brand is going to sweep up Tarmo and he's going to go off in the enduro racing world.
  • 2 0
Rigged. Everyone said it. This was robes walking into 10k followers. Don’t misunderstand that.

Booooo, might as well sign Paul the Punter.

PBA seasons 1 and 2 were great. But this one was just pathetic. Simple as that. Won't even bother wasting my time and watching next season.

Nice manual how to destroy an entertaining show. I will quit my trailforks subscription in advance!

They could have just hired Max after the show, and had Tarmo win. Then they could have had a real racer and an influencer.

Looking at viewer numbers on youtube from Season 3 vs Season2 says all you need to say.
  • 4 0
I'm lazy. I want you to say what the numbers say.

I think they chose the right guy. Max was the only contestant I decided to follow on social media. There are countless fast EWS and DH riders. It sucks for Tarmo cuz no doubt he won the contest but he’s trying to compete in a more crowded field (racing).

Max just seems to be a really good personality who knows his niche and audience and I think it’s smart Orbea chose him.

Your point of view seems intelligent to me, but you don't make a program where there is a clear winner in all the tests and then decide that you need a "public relations, with projection on social networks"
  • 6 0
It's funny that you think social media isn't a crowded field. What everyone is saying is why have a "racing" academy to decide the next big racing talent and then choose it on the number of Insta followers? Orbea needed to sponsor a different kind of reality TV show.

Mia was awesome…. Someone start a go fund me for her 15 thousand dollar bubblegum
  • 8 1
Was she?? Look at her results- always 15 seconds or more slower than Britnay. She crashed many times and also her sense of humor is silly and not funny. She should have been kicked out of the show earlier.
  • 2 3
@Edendino: She is funny, sorry you're not able to appreciate it. But you're right, Brittany is a better rider.
  • 6 0
@Ricolaburle: you're entitled to think she's is funny and I'm entitled to think she isn't.
