Video: 14 Minutes of Insane Features and Heavy Crashes At The 2023 Tour De Gnar

Jul 28, 2023 at 15:42
by Pinkbike Originals

These riders are out of their minds. The Tour De Gnar is back and this year and to say it was gnarly would be an understatement. Hats off to all the riders taking on these massive mountain bike jumps, drops, and chutes.

 Gnarliest group ride on earth
  • 68 1
What's Quinney's thoughts on this group ride? Too much faffing around waiting for everyone to hit each feature?
  • 16 0
@bikes-arent-real: He would have biked home after that tire blow out.
  • 26 0
this is like one of those English rut videos, but more consequence.

 Gnarlistan
  • 3 0
@bikes-arent-real: And also think about all that time wait and trying to pick up all those riders that broken them self's Wink
  • 3 0
… trying to coordinate all that: moving so many riders and their media groupies around Garibaldi would also have been gnarly
  • 2 0
 Is there a rider list

@shredddr: but \this vid was good

The quintuple fractures to my pelvis from a smaller crash asked the same question.

 all killer no filler!!!!
  • 7 0
 Sets the bar for sure.
  • 1 0
Yeah, like watching a war movie with no story, just the killing.

Please tell me that Yoann had his own crew filming as well, so we get see what this event is really about: The vibe! People helping each other tackle the hardest lines in a safe, non competitiv manner. Just being stoked on fellow riders clearing the features without the pressure of having to try, if you don't feel up to it.
  • 1 0
@masacrejoe: Yes! full video coming out soon. Also check out Lewis Buchanon's video on youtube. more from a riders perspective.
  • 48 0
By far the most fun I've had watching a video on PB in a long time. Yoann looks like he brings out the best in people - or totally breaks them!
  • 8 0
 And he has fantastic hair
  • 1 0
@greginvan: Right! The MOST beautiful hair. Super talented, with fabulous hair. Not fair.. ha.

More like Tour Yeah Nah...Can't remember the last time I watched a 14min long bike video without pausing it.
  • 4 0
Yeah I usually just skip between the good parts
  • 5 0
@Dogl0rd: I'll pause it for a bit with most videos, otherwise I lose focus. My mind has been over saturated with high quality YouTube videos of the engineering solutions to hydro dam failures. This video kept my attention tough.
  • 5 0
I kept having to stress pause it!!

We need a Tour de Gnar bike check.
  • 8 0
Preferably after the event, with broken parts included.

I’m organizing a similar event called the Tour de Suck, any takers?

  • 3 2
Player is not too bad, but apparently they cannot afford enough hardware since performance is quite bad. Outside is going down, they spam me with some pathetic promotion, they will soon offer this crap for $1.

This is my favorite tour de gnar edit thus far. I don’t know who most of these guys are besides Yo and Nate, but the dude in shorts and a backpack riding these lines better than whoever is wearing the Red Bull helmet (are there two?) is the coolest shit I’ve seen.
  • 10 0
One of the Red Bull riders is Hannah Bergemann.
  • 5 0
@tbmaddux: Other one is Johny Salido.
  • 1 0
I think yoann needs a fancy helmet too.

So many sends, so few breaks, I’m tired just watching!

 Squamish locs are f'n nuts
  • 14 0
I get way more stressed watching this, than rampage these days. Can not believe some of the stuff these guys are hitting. Also someone had to be the Guinea pig for each one of these features. That in itself is mind boggling. We’ll done, and kudos to Yoan Barelli for putting this together.
  • 2 0
I think the fact that a lot of these features feel a bit more raw and sometimes more technical plays a big part. Rampage stuff is absolutely massive, and in no way easy, but it all feels same-y because it's built a certain way.

This was one of the best ideas for an event in a long time. On the one hand, I hope it stays grassroots. On the other, if Red Bull has to come in and kill the spirit of it all, I hope they pay Yoann and these guys a ton of money for the rights.

Wild. Who is Ryder (sp?) in the parachute pants…smoothest kid out there.
  • 12 0
He's been killing on his bike for years and his skiing is almost as good as his biking. Squamish kids...something in the water.

@Fahhhmed: Can confirm this is not true for Ryder. Just a good kid with a good hard working family.

@skiandmtbdirtbag: perhaps you should question yourself on the take you took. You clearly assumed I was talking about financial wealth. Perhaps I was talking about the wealth of nature and the outdoors the people of Squamish have on offer. But looks to me you just have financial wealth as the go-to. The word wealth isn’t just about money, you know.
  • 4 1
@Fahhhmed: good lord stop just watch the vid bro.
  • 6 1
 @Fahhhmed: that's a worthwhile clarification. And true
  • 4 0
Sometimes I watch videos and think, ”Man, maybe with a little practice and confidence, I could do something like this.” But I don’t even want to with this. These guys are great and their skills are insane! I’ll leave it to them. Very well done!

Lewis Buchanan's video of the same ride is just as good as this. And this video is the fucking bollocks. I couldn't have done this shit on my bestest days as a young man. I wouldn't have even considered it. Bravo to all.
  • 2 0
I enjoyed Lewis's more, it told a story and made you feel invested in it. This is insane, but I liked the other one better.

That last feature - off the rock to the wooden ramp at the side of the highway near Pemberton - is it the same rock slap as last year just with a roll-in start instead of gapping onto it or did they move the landing ramp over to drop off a different rock?
  • 1 0
 .....
  • 1 0
Also looks like a feature Schley hit in NWD 6
  • 7 2
Looks like all stuff Remy hits in his videos
  • 7 1
But with way more precision and smoothness +braking control than i noticed with all those riders for the most.
  • 7 0
@likeittacky: it was the day after two days of torrential rain in the area, on top of dusty trails. At least one new feature didn't get ridden as it was deemed too dangerous in the wet. Braking control looked perfectly good to me given the conditions....The stuff they were doing on In N Out Burger was nuts given that the slab was soaking wet.
  • 12 0
@likeittacky: keep in mind Remy scopes his features and does run-ups for a long time until he is 100% confident then he might hit a feature a few times to get it perfect for his videos (he explains all this in his approach and how he manages risk, it is smart). The guys in Tour de Gnar have a limited time/number of attempts and it had just rained.
  • 2 0
@gramboh: Is it regular for these folks to hit this stuff the way Remy, Yoann, Steve etc. do, or are they just yeeting it for the day?
  • 1 0
@gramboh: there is an advantage in seeing a few crash test dummies go down the line in front of them though?

Not to take anything away from any of them. Super skilled.
  • 1 0
@gramboh: Exactly why he doesn't do the tour. He is very businessman in his riding in the sense that think about his sponsor in his risk assessment.
  • 1 0
 @likeittacky: totally
  • 1 0
@bikes-arent-real: from what I know, at least some do. Patrik in the pink t-shirt has been hitting the stuff for some time and he has mentioned some other killer riders do regurarly too.
  • 3 0
I feel like this is one of those events that raises the bar for mountain biking. It’s insane how much precision and control those lines require.
  • 4 0
I had to pause the video to comment HOLLY SHIT massive props to all these riders my mind is blown
  • 2 0
And massive props to the builders and guinea pigs
  • 2 1
I'd love to see an in depth bike check on this. Really interesting to see how some of the riders were able to make that corner on in and out. They all were flying but some managed to make that turn and others not. They all are very competent riders so it makes me wonder if there is something different with brake setup, tires, or suspension. Trying to get your suspension dialed for this type of riding is beyond me. All the bottom out support but still set for all the traction you can get. Inspiring riding for sure!

 PSI for days

Love the silence before each rider’s run. Like the group collectively holds it’s breath until the rubber reconnects with the trail. Gnarly!
  • 1 0
Yeah they know. Not the kind of lines you want to be distracted on!
  • 4 1
So good to see the women doing this... to paraphrase Rob- "How can she sit down with ovaries that big!!!" Amazing riding from everyone.
  • 1 0
Yes. Props to those who selected the riders, to the riders for their skill, and for their decision-making. Fine tradition of ride at your own risk
  • 1 0
Fck yeah! love this shit - I quickly scrolled through some of Joyride, meh.. Seems for me to be a common theme with media these days. As an avid surfer the WSL major comp broadcasts are similarly boring yet watching guys like Nathan Florence freesurf gnarly slab waves with single camera and minimal production is just so good.. Stick it to the big boys shredders.. Need mooooore...

@wbro74: yeah seconded. I preferred lewis' to this. Somehow he got the real hype from the other riders and crowd, right up there.
