It was wet and wild out at the first EWS race in La Thuile with both riders and bikes taking their fair share of hits. Check out some of the action in gratuitous slow motion.
I'm not sure which is more satisfying... watching slow motion footage of suspension functioning or having sex on a cloud while having whipped cream laced with melted chocolate sprayed in my mouth... its a toss up.
You should try getting at an unattended picnic table, holiday table or any table with food on it. You're dreaming far too small in my opinion. Broaden your horizons.
I prefer the second option, definitely, considering that most suspensions seen here do bottom out too easily; the fantasm option sounds much better. Thanks for the inspiration btw
@danstonQ: dude, if your suspension is just bottoming out on a big g out like that it is set up pretty well. It's should bottom out sometimes or you are not utilising all the travel.
@xxinsert-name-herexx: My thoughts too. The softer shocks seemed to just bottom and not return much at the end of the travel, even compared to the forks
That does look like a lot of travel used in for what they are going over. Even worse, it didn't look like the forks (especially the Fox 3 were even trying to spring back into an extended position. Going to need to video myself as I'm sure I'm doing it wrong.
Plenty of raw videos to watch.
I find this awesome and wish there was more,we can actually learn something looking at the lines, the body positioning, the suspension work and more.
I even liked the music.
And while I know I’ll never be as fast or look as cool as any of these riders in slow mo - moreover I don’t think anyone will ever bother filming me in slow mo—-
Seems like a lot (most of?!?) the suspension was working poorly- a lot of forks seem to easily bottom, and not return in time for the next hit. And the Yetis all seemed to be stuck at bottom for an eternity.... seems like we have a long way to go to optimize this stuff in our little world.
that bit just before the wooden berm is very steep and you come into a compression pretty fast plus you need to brake at the same time. it is just not visible on the video how steep most of the terrain is there.
Fair enough! I’m sure I don’t have the whole picture. But for sure the visuals in the video don’t line up with how I “imagined” my mountain bike suspension working.
Through the wood berm, shock initially bottoms but returns to the middle immediately which is exactly where you want it to be for the rest of that feature.
I had the same thought. Some of them seem to actually be slowing the bike down (you can see it kinda push the bike backwards as it resists compressing).
I don't really pay attention to pro riders but it would be interesting to watch a heavily sponsored pro go through a section vs. a less-sponsored rider to see how the suspension differs, under the assumption that a more heavily sponsored rider might get a better suspension treatment than a lesser one. Maybe that happens in this video and I don't know who is who.
I'm shocked how much some of the bikes seem to flex- especially the Lapierre and GT. To my eye, flexing to the point of the bike "skipping" doesn't seem right. Especially given that some of the bikes look substantially more solid. Not an engineer, but interested anyways.
@fabwizard: I always ride with my phone in the pocket. most of the times I have no other place to store it and I also don't see the risk of damaging it as too big. obviously there is always a chance, but I think I never fell to where my phone would be
@derechtefux This winter I slipped on a sheet of ice on the trail and crushed the phone in my pocket. I think it actually protected me somewhat from a pointy rock.
Seems the majority are running air in the rear which surprised me. Also, seems there are a lot more Zebs than 38s. Any insight on why so many are using air?
How the hell people bottom out 180+ forks? I ride double blacks in parks and barely ever able to use 170 out of travel, i’m not a pro, however on that video track is not that rough comparing to dh courses
Matt was just finalizing that one but I sent him off to Sun Peaks for Field Test this week, so it shouldn't be too long once he's back. The anticipation!
Yeah it's the best fork I've ever owned as a big and pretty good rider compared to lyriks and 36s. Haven't used the Zeb or 38 though. And that formula looks freaking sick!!! @WasatchEnduro that thing has my attention haha

No doubt, but the suspension still looks choppy.

Is it me or does that seem dumb? Or do they have phone sponsors?

Quite few crashes this year and so far no damage.
Probably just jinxed myself
I watched this 4x. So good.

Perfection.
What I see in my mind's eye and never execute.
Nice!
