Video: 6 New Products from the Taipei Cycle Show

While most tradeshows seem to have more in common with a funeral than a bicycle convention in recent years, the annual Taipei Cycle event is always chock full of interesting products and people. Taiwan a long way from wherever you are? That doesn't mean that you can't come along with me on a tour through the crowded halls to see some interesting stuff. We'll check out two hydraulic brakes from Rever, a wild and mega-light carbon fiber chainring, TOR's clever stems and pedals, and a modular foam tire insert system designed to replace the air that you'd normally use.

Okay, when I say "tour,'' I actually mean a blast through just one of the four expansive halls of the Nangang Exhibition Center on a 12" wheeled, battery-powered kids bike with a throttle. No, no fun at all. None. Zero.

 The carbon chain ring comes to mind here. I never felt like my 32-tooth aluminum ring has been weighing me down. It's like a tenth of a pound.

 @WAKIdesigns: I picked up an aluminum race face cinch ring for $14 off competitivecyclist.com Normally $60. Apparently no one likes purple. I like any color for $14.

 @daugherd: The Shimano I bought is super trendy black/Ti. adds 30g to the bike in the place where it least matters, will last ages. Simply put, thanks E-bikes and the toll they take on regular bike parts, making companies invent durable stuff with minimal weight increase.

 @WAKIdesigns: Back when I was riding with two chainrings (32t and 22t) I always got the steel Deore 32t rings. 9 euro a piece. They didn't last forever though, but I don't know about your bike.

 @vinay: I had the Deore 32 steel ring on my commuter, it took me 3 years of near daily commute to kill it. Outlived at least 5 chains and 2 cassettes

 The insert could be a cool idea, but I'd like a review to see how far off it is from the pneumatic experience. Just seems like it would be dead. How long before you would have to replace them? And also how hard it would be to wrestle your tire over that and the rim.

 as a kid I would have been SOOOO stoked to have that little bike. Thank goodness I didn't have that cool little bike when I was a kid.

 As someone who worked in a scrapyard and pulled many car bumpers I can promise you those foam inserts will break and crumble long before you need to replace your tires,if you ride over any rough terrain. The other foams may be more durable but the foam they use for car bumpers is a 1 time deal. It does a phenomenal job absorbing impact but any significant dents or damage will greatly compromise the foams integrity and will create stress fractures through the cellular network. It is very similar to what you find in bike helmets that really should only be used till an impact, and then replaced. Air is free, rim protection is great but I have serious doubt about the applicability of a product like this in serious riding circumstances. If I was a racer and wanted to prevent that one race crushing flat I would definitely be interested. If I was opting for those same benefits but planned on riding my bike all over, all the time simply for the joy of bike riding, then simpler other tire/rim support systems would be just as functional with far less a chance of destruction through normal riding conditions. Just 2 cents from someone whose worked extensively with that specific foam used in high impact events.

 so if you know structural foams you will know that EPS and EPP are very different things. EPP used is very durable and does not breakdown over time. EPS yes, it will do that. EPP has many grades and many densities. Choose the right product in combination with other high energy absorbing foams and EPP can have great performance. Also critical to long term performance is the molding process and how the EPP beads are bonded together in the mold. Bad molding, poor bonding = problems of course.

 The fact that electric kids bike run by a little (I assume 18V) battery can get a grown man up to speed without hesitation is pretty impressive.

 @brianpark: you guys should ask some tyre company to make Levy signature edition 12” tyres. Those tyres look quite fat for the size which reminds me of a doughnut. So my proposal is hipster brown tyre tone (like some city Schwalbies) and knobs in various colors so it looks like sprinkles

 More kids on E-bikes haha! Not sure about the foam inserts that completely replace air. Wouldn't that have much more rolling resistance? I guess it would make most sense for a commuter bike with electric assist but not sure I'd be putting that on a mountain bike anytime soon.

 That carbon chainring sounds expensive, but a Sram Eagle alloy chainring costs $110-140 CAD on Jenson right now. Which is also expensive.

Really enjoyed your vid reviewing the Tor, Jagwire and other booths at show.

What’s the vibe like at the show? Seems like it would also feature a lot of commuter/work bike for the Asian markets.

 It doesn't feel as busy as previous years but it's still jumping compared to all the other shows. So many e-bikes, of course, and loads of commuter/normal bikes, too. Not too many mountain bikes...

I've almost pulled the trigger on one but price is just a bit high for what it is.

I know my 7 and 5 year old would just absolutely love cruising our backyard on one though.

 @bogey: This isn't a replacement for pedal bikes. It would be all about skill building in my opinion. That and pure entertainment. Seems like a better alternative than a Powerwheels jeep to me.

 Right. Take a little kid for a bike ride and they'll get down to the end of the street before they're tired. Ask them to climb a hill? Great way to get a kid to hate a bicycle.

These little E-Bikes allow kiddos to keep up with Mom and Dad on the bike, without expending all of their energy doing the pedaling and having some energy left over to balance, steer, and do all that fun stuff we love about our bikes.

 Yes @mikelevy anymore infor on the little bike. The stacyc someone metioned above is too expensive almost $700 harley davidson i think bought stacyc. The astrol looks great.
Also just to note if you have no kids and think this ebalance bike will makenur kid lazy, you are totally missing the points.

 Mike Levy does a great job a this kinda stuff, there ought to be a future for him in TV if he wants it. As to the tire insert, the only way to know about that is to ride around on some for a while, and decide for yourself if its good, bad, or useless.

 Why bushings over bearings in a pedal? is there a performance / durability benefit over a very minor weight saving?

 My issue is that I never have to replace the bearings/axle before I've smashed the pedal body to Jesus f*ck. Had DMR Vaults for around a year and the pins are mashed so bad they can't be extracted.
