Incredible story for the audience and just as incredible value for Pinkbike. What's that other show that pink bike has? something to do with an academy. what a joke, chalk and cheese. More Cathro content please.

 This.

I think both are great and makes for a diverse offering from PB. Give Cathro another team of misfits, do another Academy!

Maybe instead of thinking of it as a zero sum, either/or situation, consider the possibility that the PBA series - which is shot all in one location, with a multitude easy and desirable product placement opportunities, and receives a pretty healthy number of views (as many, if not more than the Cathro videos) - helps to fund the creation of the Cathroteer series (which essentially requires funding a World Cup campaign, pretty extensive travel for the video crew, and - as we've seen - has a way higher risk of going sideways quick).
  • 38 1
Agreed. Cathro content is always amazing, with real emotions, actual riding and a great story. So much better then fake personalities, bullshit drama and PC content of some other unnamed shows.

@pcarrier: Cathro Academy would be sick
  • 23 5
PB facilitates Cathro content and it's great, but when they are hands on like with Pinkbike Academy, their true Squamish dorkiness and out-of-touchness, cringy product placement, etc, permeates everything. When you're a dork from Squamish, anything and everything gets a dork-tinted lens.

@skimtb1: I find this offensive right down to my Chromag bars, Blundstone boots and over priced rent.
  • 5 1
@skimtb1: Pinkbike Academy should be in Nelson... DH sleds and flat pedals only.
  • 9 0
PB Academy needs a restructuring. I would separate the genders and add an actual race format, Everyone definitely wants to see racing. To keep the drama you can keep doing all the quirky challenges. Non race challenges can be rewarded with a small percentage of your lap time cut, additional time penalized to someone else, or an uplift. Women compete against women and men vs men, intermittent years maybe? All together? Idc, I want racing. It has enormous potential.

@skimtb1: how bad is it? I haven't watched a single episode.

 @Bike078: It's pretty rough...

This video was so good! Quality content with an amazing vibe added to it.

@pcarrier: yes a dh academy would be sooo nice

I am just going to say it, I feel Ben having his own privateer race team is better than Ben racing.
  • 78 0
I think can do both like Bernard Kerr.
  • 18 1
@danielsun: Definitely, the last two episodes have been the best ones.
  • 4 0
That would be sick, but I just really want to see what he can do in a world cup season as well.

 Really really good content.
More of this real world stuff please.
Maybe next year also a series from behind the scenes at the EWS? Would be mint!

Great story, brilliantly told. I hope someone gives Ben and co a stack of money to do this again next year (ideally with the same crew of riders). A lot more enjoyable than the shreddit style edits a lot of teams put out, because it's actually telling a story, but it's not too po faced either. Great work by everyone involved.
  • 54 0
This is actual reality TV. Lets have more of it! No script. Hell, just give Ben money and let him do what he does. All of his stuff is gold.
Who else could take a broken neck/season-ending injury and accidentally turn it in to the best story of the year? I'm glad he was able to provide some great content for all of his sponsors to hopefully guarantee another season. I wonder what team picks up Jamie?

The privateer series we want but don't deserve
  • 27 0
Jamie saying "I don't want to win it cuz it won't really be a real win". Man, after Alex Fayolle and his win and how that put him in a hole of unattainable expectations, I can only imagine that those new up and comers never want to win due to weather that only hitting the tops guys. Good on Jamie for a crazy set of races - many more to come I bet.
  • 5 1
There is clearly a perception out there that winning because of the weather is somehow tantamount to cheating. Even if there was a tactical attempt to do a race run during clear skies, this is still aboveboard and well within the rules. Tainting your good fortune with wrong perceptions of performance and integrity will only cloud up your headspace. IT'S RACING, there will always be an element of fortune within it. The winning riders should not feel any guilt that lady luck smiled their way, in the same way that they shouldn't feel too bad that a puncture or mechanical potentially ruined a sick race run.
  • 3 0
@Verbl-Kint: Also because it was obviously not intentional... not like Champery in 2007 where winner actually stopped in qualis, so he would get lower starting position and hopefully race before the rain... which then really happened... and then rules changed for the next season with introduction of quali points

 Cathro Factory team 2021?
  • 23 0
I hope McKayla is recovering ok, concussions scare the shit out of me.
  • 20 0
 Best ROI in the biz.
  • 13 0
I purchased Race Face products specifically because of this series. I am that lame.
  • 1 0
@Unrealityshow: I trust Ben, he feels like a friend even though we don't even know each other. I feel like he would only use good products, but maybe that's just marketing?

Certainly made me consider more RaceFace parts like wheels and Leatt kit.

pinkbike ews team with ben cathro as manager and everyone riding the grim donut????
  • 4 0
weirdly that seems like it would be a good show... except cathro races DH
  • 3 0
That team should be called "a pack of donuts".

 Let’s go!

After Eddie Master's article on Vital about how hard it is to even get into a World Cup as a privateer something like this could be good, a team dedicated to privateers.
  • 1 0
 @MaxxRendall: hell yeah ????
  • 11 0
This is great; Mr Cathro is always value for money on all the videos he does, but his team mentoring is really the cherry on the icing on the cake. PB, I sincerely hope you are out there right now rattling the can with all your industry contacts to put together a bigger programme next year, with Ben racing and officially mentoring/supporting other privateers. I’m not sure it has to be a ‘team’, this set up works great!
I’ll admit the PBA has surprised me and I am enjoying it, but I can tell you which series I am going to be looking forward to the most next year!
  • 5 0
Can't script content like this. Bunch of genuine guys out there working hard to break into the elite ranks. Jamie talking about not wanting to win the race; that was heartfelt.
  • 14 0
What a story. Such good vibes.
  • 12 0
Best piece of content ever created by pinkbike. Amazing story, well produced, and really nails the essence of what makes the race scene so great.
  • 9 0
Ben, you do a great job at keeping it real, not to mention helping others out!???????????? Always a great watch!
  • 9 0
This was such an amazing pivot in the series! Great job Ben and everyone involved!
  • 9 0
Ben definitely made the most out of all the circumstances. Very entertaining to watch. Ben is a top dude !
  • 6 0
Given the circumstances I could not have hoped for a better ending to the series. Talk about making lemonade out lemons! I hope we get to see Ben both race and manage a team next year!
  • 9 0
 This is awesome
  • 9 0
 God, I love our sport.
  • 5 0
I hope to see more content like this but after all the effort he put in, I really hope Ben gets to race WC next year.
He can always start his own team after getting a podium! :-)
  • 7 0
that real life stuff is so much better than this other staged bs
  • 6 0
This is just the best mtb content. Could watch Cathro and Max’s stuff forever
  • 3 0
First off, AWESOME! Cathro and Co. are awesome. PB, please tell us this is coming back next year? But, on a side note... Is Lyle (Minnaar's tech) somehow related to Rat Boy? And can we get him his own series to fill the ratty void?
  • 1 0
He's actually a really nice guy ,Helped us get out bike back in the ball game in morzine . Really genuine nice guy
  • 2 0
Look, I am gutted that Cathro broke his neck and COVID happened, which derailed the premise for this series, but holy cow did they make lemonade out of some rotten lemons. This couldn't have been scripted better and it really shows how just a little bit of support can make a huge difference for a rider that is 80% there. Cathro and his team should win some sort of award for their selfless and tireless work to help these privateers. Bravo

his shoes on the couch @11:43 "psssst hey bro, let's go out for a ride"

What a great video, well done to all, long standing riders of the SDA doing so well.
Props +10 to you all.

I hope we see Ben having a team build up next year(and the accompanying videos, of course)!
Good luck!

Anyone else notice at 17:23 when he runs a stop sign and almost gets hit by a car?
  • 4 0
Thank you Ben for Walk the Talk! What a great way to make the best of all the adverse situations this year.
  • 1 0
@PB: There you have it - 90%+ of positive comments for Cathros videos, other neutral or negative. With the PB Academy you have probably almost the opposite ratio. I think you have very clear view now where the money for future video production should go to (yeah we get it, you already filmed PBA and we will see all of the parts no matter what...) ......
  • 4 0
 Stunning. Beautiful and stunning.
  • 4 0
That was really good. Cheers to all of them.

What an awesome vibe, that’s the definition of sportsmanship if I ever saw it!
Right on
This has to be Ben’s calling!
  • 1 0
Ben is the greatest story teller around! Video series of the year.
What lens do you use to shoot on your Sony camera? The Sony a6400 camera are great for the size. Easy to carry in a bike pack.
  • 1 0
Great watch, great series, one of the highlights from all the footage of the DH this year. Great to see people helping out at the top end of the sport. Makes me want to go and ride my bike....

I love this, Ben is such a blast. The whole Privateer series from the beginning really is such great content. Well done pinkbike.

I want to live in a world where Ben and Max are perpetually employed to keep on producing this kind of content. I don't even care about DH, but I care about this.

 10/10 would recommend
