Ben Deakin is racing the Megavalanche Enduro race this week and is Pinkbike's man on the ground, taking you inside the action to show you what it's like racing. Starting at the front of the grid Ben has made it to the final and qualified in 11th place - no easy feat! This vlog from the day has facts about the Megavalanche as well as showing you just what it takes to make it to the main show.

Not understanding why the lack of coverage every year of the most massive gravity event of the year... Is like is time to Tour de France and we still watching football as allways....

Can Deakin make it a double?

Nice to know there are still some Super Monsters out there (at 1:07ish)...

Not going to lie, as soon as I saw that I stopped watching. Nothing else in a Mega Avalanche video could possibly top a Super Monster bolted to the front of a shred sled in 2018 for me.

Try qualifying from the back row! Wink

Out here now for the 2nd time, (1st one was 7 years ago). A great event and I'm thoroughly enjoying it but unless you are super human then the only way to qualify is by getting a priority grid position. I was in the second to last row and was still overtaking way slower guys at the finish line. Went backwards to begin with due to guys getting tangled in front of me but still finished 37 places ahead of where I started so pretty happy with that. It's by no means a level playing field unless you get priority grid position. Still a freaking awesome event to do tho.

Not true. I started on the 5th row (of 8 ) and finished with a top 30 result. So did loads of other people.
I'm 40 and father of 2 (ie not pro at all).

@IllestT: it's my truth mate. I was row 6 and in front of me guys got tangled up with everyone to the side shooting past. I looked back after the first corner and there was about 10 guys behind me. Based on my finishing position I overtook approx 70 riders. I'm also 40 years old. Congratulations on your run and hope you had a good one today. I'm in amateurs tomorrow and can't wait.

 @IllestT: correction....good luck for tomorrow.

@ro-bert: look at the results though.
There's very little correlation between starting number and finish position.
A lot of it is a lottery, but it's certainly not a done-deal

Hey, first Mega for me, started in the second to last row as well and finished 33th, despite a crash on the first patch of snow.
So I qualified with the top riders but 33/35 means I started from the last row for the final.

For sure it's better to start the qualy in the front...

I can´t believe how much fun I had watching this video! insaane!

I'm exhausted watching the heavily edited highlights, that must be a killer to ride

Best race on the Planet and no live coverage. Shame shame shame.

Nice one,Ben. But starting on the front row is half the race!

 Borges got 1° hi think
  • + 2
Ill give you that starting on the first row is a huge advantage, Thats why they generally seed riders on previous results so if you have found yourself on the back row its probably due to not having any results or giving the organisers that info!

@the-deakinator: You're right. But we also see every year press members, guests and even special inscription buyers (it happened at least one year) at the front row.
I've raced the Mega 7 times, and always started in the middle or the back,as I don't have any relevant results in my "career".

I'm out of breath at the bottom of my local tracks and they're only 30s long. I'm genuinely unsure whether i would be able hold on to my bars anymore trying this.

Sick video, I can’t even imagine how terrifying that mass start must be a few rows deep! Oioi!!
  • + 2
How did he know to cut across at 5:42? Do they pre-ride the course?
  • + 4
He saw the worn line from others doing it.
  • + 4
 Yes, 4 days to practice.
  • + 1
@gpaevo: I wondered how they knew which way to go
