Video: Riding 100 Kilometres in a Day - The Food Edition

Feb 3, 2022 at 16:02
by Pinkbike Originals

Tom's back with another huge ride challenge. This time, as he battles the heat and steep climbs in Rotorua, New Zealand, local riders and visiting pros join for sections, bringing with them a Kiwi-inspired plate of food to keep him fuelled. How does Bas van Steenbergen's Whitakkers score compared to Sam Shaw's Flat White? How do Tuhoto Ariki and Lachie Stevens-Mcnab know Tom's favourite flavour of chips? And can Tom make it to 100km?

The riding there is so good and I feel very fortunate to have ridden there a couple times. Such a special place to go ride your bike.

 @kurtwerby couldn't agree more!

Unique water bottle holder used by Bas. I've used the same technique to hold a banana, for nutritional purposes only.

@AbrasiveAdam that's a high scoring plate right there

Yah, that was an interesting little quirk. Bike has tons of room for a water bottle, yet he chose to just stuff it in his shorts? What's up with that?

They say three minutes of laughter is the same amount of exercise as running a mile (1.6K). So Tom biked 100k and laughed another 100!

@Tombrad is the kind of lunatic that brings a level of energy, craziness (Levy is def out there though) and fun unmatched by his PB peers. To quote a famous film, "That creep can roll" and he seems like he'd be a hoot to ride with. Come down to the southern US and we'll hook ya up with some BBQ, doughnuts and cider for yr "plate".

Tom your happiness is so contagious. This is really what biking is: sharing the fun with friends and having a good time pushing your limits from time to time ! Ride well mate!

Thanks @frmazella - even better if you convince your mates to bring food into the middle of it all

How many Americans here want to know what flavours go in a Flat White to make it delicious?

 Step one, coffee?

Had a flat white at Vivace in Seattle and it tasted so good I just assumed I'd unknowingly sold my soul in addition to the $5 they charged.

Went to Australia, had a flat white, determined everyone else in the world does coffee better. Came home and ordered a grinder, espresso machine/steam wand.

@angelofverdun: right? So many douchebag coffee snobs here, ESPECIALLY in Melbourne.

@Ktron: The hatred of the customer is directly proportional to the taste of the latte'.

That looks like some type 3 fun. You could see the weight of the challenge on @Tombrad 's face at 6AM, but still 'yewwwing' and shouting 'how good' 15 hrs later. I think he could make changing a flat fun

@premiumfrye we should've put a "how good" and "what a treat" counter in the ride stats as we went

Tom. There's a local 40k/60k next month, my buddies and I were only going to do the 40k but since watching your video I convinced us all to sign up for the 60 instead!

I love how kiwi the effort on the snacks were too, everything was minimum effort probably picked up from the BP connect just outside of the park Big Grin
Also missed opportunity to ride Tuhoto-Ariki with Tuhoto-Ariki Pene, that would have been a great opportunity for education around his namesake.

honestly impressed by tom's effort. riding a 100k on a fully is something to brag about i'd say!

@Tombrad you gotta stop wearing all black on those hot death marches mate. Also, pavlova is disputed territory between Oz and Kiwiland.....

It had controversial kiwifruit on it too!

Tom's the best!! Whakarewarewa forrest is sooooo good. Went there to ride for a few days, and ended up doing close to two weeks. I hope to go back one day.

I seriously would have thrown up! Crisps and junk fits well with a brewski when you're lying on a couch, not when you're breathing out of your eyes ...

I think pinkbike should start posting on both youtube and its own video player for when things are age restricted or when youtube is blocked at school/work.
