Video: The Grim Donut vs. the Kids' Pump Track

Aug 14, 2022 at 9:55
by Pinkbike Originals

Tom stole the Grim Donut and took it to the pump track during Crankworx Whistler. Anybody walking past was welcome to try a timed lap - unsurprisingly George Brannigan set the fastest time, while Kazimer was dead mid-pack and Levy is still missing.

Any chance of getting some actual info/videos/impressions of the grim donut v2 being released? We've been real patient

This. What’s taking so long? Give the people what they want!

Levy had mentioned that is going to be included in the next field test which should be arriving soon.

Yeah it's been nearly a year now

@Paco77: I read this in Ed Master's voice.

@Paco77: the wait time is based on the wheelbase

It will not gonna happen, probably it's too good (some brands would get upset) or too bad (Pivot would get upset). Last time Yoann tried v1 he had to switch the brand Wink

Awesome sarcasm for an American, almost seems like your serious Wink

@lkubica: literally different brand and went up a size

Tom Sampson.....Alright, get on with it. Hilarious. This is possibly the best content in weeks. I like the shot of Christina hiding in the background at the table like she wants no part in this Tom-foolery. But she did put on the jacket. Everything about this is great: the race jacket, the donut prizes, the shifty "podium" placements. Tom putting in this bid for next race commentator after Rob.

In total agreement. A perfect example of how much fun bikes can be!

Pinkbike does literally everything but review that bike

As someone who rides a bike with a 1350mm wheelbase I feel seen.
  • 37 0
I took my trail bike to a pumptrack once, it was less fun than I could have imagined.

Certainly not a grim exposure setting, come one guys, not used to go Outside?
  • 7 0
I feel this comment is under-rated, but certainly not under-exposed.

The photographer in me thanks you

Most stellar independent locally owned bakery of Fox and Oak donuts right there by headquarters in Squamish...and they show up with Tim Horton's. Release the donut slush fund!
  • 4 0
Fox donuts? That's some serious diversification!
  • 16 0
@Mac1987: Fox Head or Fox Tail? Or Fox hole ?
  • 8 0
Dentist donuts. Ironically my dentist came over to the house when we had Fox and Oak donuts the other day, be said he buys Tim Horton's for his guests.
  • 4 0
Went to Fox and Oak a few weeks ago for the first time. 100% worth the time to pop of the highway on the way to/back from Whistler. So good.

Live Laugh LOL! That jacket makes me want to watch Withnail And I again.

 "He manualed the donut!"
Fun race and commentary, and for some reason I liked the sound of the pedal hits off the start line.

More like an Eclair than a Donut

You just named their electric version, congrats. The Grim E-clair.

I hope this means Tom is racing the Grim Donut in the DH today.

@westcoastatheart I’ve got good and bad news - yes heading up for Canadian Open race run in an hour but unfortunately I just couldn’t find the Donut for the life of me this morning…
  • 1 0
@Tombrad: ...maybe if you can find Mike Levy...I'll let myself out!
  • 2 0
Grim donut vs crankworks whistler slope style course Or get a group of desk jokies from outside and let them ride ninja cougar or something
  • 4 0
Does Mike Levy really owm a donut shop?
  • 12 0
Asking the real questions but of course Levy's Outside masters have once again unplugged his keyboard.

Anyone else notice that he's only producing video content where the corporate overlords can edit it before it's made public?

Levy in your next video spit over your left shoulder if everything is ok, turn around on the spot if Outside are holding you against your will and talk straight at the camera about bikes if they're holding you against your will AND are lizard people.

@PhillipJ: PB is video content. Beta is text content
  • 2 0
@TheBearDen: Is there still Beta? I've not been subscribed to Beta but I'm subscribed to Cranked and once read this post on their website (www.cranked.cc/beta-blocked) just when I couldn't find any Beta references on the PB front page either. So, apparently they don't have a print magazine anymore, but do they still have a web-zine?
  • 2 0
@vinay: I believe it's mostly online based and there's like a Bi-annual magazine that comes out... I was more or less being a little cheeky with my comment but if you look at PB content since the takeover it has felt like there's far far more video content coming from PB.
  • 3 0
@PhillipJ: The shape-shifters are among us.
  • 1 0
@TheBearDen: You mean Dylan Sherrard is now writing his Dark Roast Diaries in Beta? I loved his articles, it is just that my eyes didn't like reading them from a screen. But yeah, now that you say it, indeed there used to be some longer written articles here on Pinkbike and maybe even the race reports used to be longer. I don't know. If digital is the way, maybe it could be possible to get a subscription or so to have the text sent to a Kobo e-reader. I'd still want the computer screen for the pictures, but at least I can read the text away from an illuminated screen.

Other than that, Cranked and the Misspent Summers stuff is working well for me. Just still waiting for Anthology 3 (from Eskapee).

The PumP DonuT hehehehe. It looks like a 40t truck driving through the town. I´m used to ride my Enduro in the pumptrack, compared to the PumP Donut my bike is a 100% 29" pump machine race ready for any pump track champs.

Can't the saddle go any lower? Even aside from the kid, it seemed like most people couldn't properly use their hips for pumping other than the for-aft motion. Most of the up-down motion appeared to come from their chest.

If the seattube doesn't have enough room to fully slide down the seatpost, use a (sufficiently short) rigid post next time and slam it all the way. And when you're at it, mullet the bike too. 26", 24" even in the rear? Make this the perfect pumptrack monster and show your potential customers what it can do!

Other than the, the whole event was perfect! Crankworx take note, pumptrack with corners.
  • 4 0
needs a super monster up front
  • 2 0
with a 24" rear you'd probably pedal strike on flat ground lol
  • 2 0
@bkm303: If you pedal strike in a pumptrack race, you're not doing the pumptrack thing properly.
  • 2 0
"Crankworx take note, pumptrack with corners."

some tight corners on that pumptrack too!
  • 1 0
@timvan: Well yeah, but it is a kids pumptrack after all. If the bike is small and speed isn't that high, you need steeper curvature to gain some speed. The Grim Donut is a bit like the big bully who occupies the little children's yard, scares everyone away (Grim Donut does sound scary) and then is too big and heavy to properly use the facilities. Back in the days there was this "backyard pumptrack" feature in Dirt Magazine (in print) where they featured the tracks people built. Most of the times, these big blokes rode 16" kids BMX's because that worked best on their tight tracks.

im dizzy from that camerawork tbh

Super-fun video. Camera work was 100% skookum. Tom: the best MC imaginable. Good work making sure the swag bag went to Little Johnny. And thanks!
  • 2 0
Y’all know you can shoot this at like a 5.6 and no one will judge you, right?
  • 2 0
 What does this mean?
  • 4 0
@pmhobson: An aperture that gives more depth of field, and thus fewer out-of-focus shots.
  • 2 0
 That's not slack enough LOL!
  • 2 1
Show me something that you spent way too much money on, but was totally worth it?!
  • 1 0
What's the little tool box attached to the accessories mount under the top tube?
  • 1 0
It’s a Topeak multitool. I have one. It’s pretty neat.
  • 1 0
@pmhobson: that's cool. What I'm looking for is something similar but larger volume so I can throw a few more tools in it.
  • 2 2
Grim donut just looks normal now with how ridiculous bikes have gotten. Some brands would call it a "Jib" bike. Race your way through the dirt jumps to the top of the podium.
  • 1 0
Sure I will leave you to ride late 2010 bikes if you like that so much and I will stay on my "limo". Clown bikes have been done until few years ago actually so you have plenty of options to choose from, let us have correctly sized bikes for a while at least.
  • 2 0
Set of dirt jumps next then?
  • 2 0
That dog is Levy's spirit animal. Derailed by donuts.
  • 2 0
Still the worst looking, floppiest bike ever.

you need a better camera guy, all over the place, not to mention massively over exposed...
