MENTIONS: @pivotcycles
The Scottsdale/Fountain Hills Preserve most definitely is, as they have signage stating as such.
South Mountain is open still as well, based on the law passed earlier this year allowing Class 1 eBikes on mountain bike trails in Maricopa County, unless otherwise stated by the land manager (like Scottsdale/FH).
I just want to see it in black and white so that way there is no misinterpretation of the rules. It is probably naive of me to say this, but I would assume (uh oh) that Pivot would have made sure that eBikes are allowed to be ridden on trails where they had to obtain a permit to hold a demo. I could be wrong though.
Call the PMP Rangers Office at 602-261-8318 to confirm. They have had Rangers out there in the last six months advising people that E-Bikes were not permitted to be used at PMP. I talked directly to a Ranger myself. You will find the Rangers typically at the 40th Str lot or Dreamy Draw lot in the afternoons reviewing.
I was told that each municipality/park/preserve choose what they are going to do with E-bikes. Look at Sedona and Flagstaff for instance. They are not adhering to the state code as they are not allowing e-bikes either. Sedona views them the same as a standard motorcycle and are pretty serious about the consequences.
I wouldn't be so sure about the last statement. I know I number of demo drivers that just show up. It is normally not an issue but it has become on when some demos bikes went beyond self pedaling.
Odd, not what the guys on the ground have been saying recently.
It does not surprise me that some companies do not check for demos.
I am just worried about the Rangers telling people something different from what is posted. I am pro-eBike and I don't think it is fair that people are going to be punished for something that they weren't aware was illegal in the first place.
This will probably get me in trouble here, but I think that if the County has passed a law saying its okay, then it should be okay and it shouldn't require you to search high and low to get a concrete answer for each separate area.
I agree that things be more clear. It seems to be that each park reserves the right to self determine what they will and will not allow in each park/preserve. Kind of like sport loop at Mc Dowell Mtn Park (Bikes Only: No hikers, animals, horses, and only one direction). I don't ride an e-bike so there is no impact to me. It does seem that this Preserve being in the middle of the city and has a lot of hikers and horses may present a safety issue.
As for my experience, the e-bike riders I have seen out there appear to adhere to their own rules. Flying in the middle of the trail directly at hikes with kids, buzzing past horse rider without considering stopping(dangerous), and almost being push off trails as they go past uphill. It kind of seems like most of them may be new and don't know or care that there is trail etiquette/rules. I don't like stopping for horses but it beats having the rider thrown off and being kicked by one on my way by.
Don't get me wrong, I would try an e-bike and maybe ride one every so often but in the initial...I don't think they have courteous riders representing this segment of the sport at this time. It seems to give hikers a new found dislike for mtn bike riders too. I don't know how to fix any of that though. Just my thought.
I always stop for hikers/equestrian/other riders. Lately, the hikers have been more polite than the other riders!
I have only seen one eBike at the trailhead and I haven't encountered one yet on the trail. I just know that no matter what I am riding, be it an eBike or not, I will be courteous to other users.
The biggest thing is I want to be sure I'm not unintentionally poaching on my eBike. I have a call in to the Ranger station, waiting to hear back.
Yeah I can see both sides of the e-bike argument. I will say riders running everyone down including their own has been on the uptick. It has recently been mostly e-bikes in mine and the group of people I normally ride with. Not awesome.
