PRESS RELEASE: PNW Components

Introducing our new Loam Lever, AKA your thumbs new best friend. A lot of people agree that one of the best upgrades to a mountain bike in the last decade is the dropper post, but we noticed that a lot of dropper post levers are more afterthought than icing on top. So we set out to make a premium lever, that combined satisfying ergonomics with precision and durability.

Loam Lever has 4 key characteristics:

1. Adjustability - Two forms of adjustment to get perfect placement.

2. Weather Proof - Oversized high quality sealed bearing and all stainless hardware for longevity and durability.

3. No Slip Grip - Speaking of weather, the Loam Lever features a grippy injection molded thumb pad to keep your paws in place in even the sloppiest of conditions.

4. Techy AF - Custom CNC machining throughout the whole design of the Loam Lever for precision and weight reduction.

“When we were testing out levers, we found that some hurt your thumb, weren’t easily accessible or were too short, which makes pressing them difficult. We wanted a lever that felt crisp, was easy to push and had a natural feel through its stroke,” Aaron Kerson, Owner of PNW noted.

This was something that we factored in excessively during development, creating a lever that not only worked but was easy and fun to press. Considering everyone's perfect lever placement would be different the team opted to make adjustability a key factor in the lever. The Loam Lever features more adjustments than any ever on the market, with 2 position side to side and pivoting reach adjustment for precision placement.

Located in the heart of the Pacific North West, the team of riders also knew how important durability is, especially considering the wet weather conditions the area is known for. As basic levers get older, they can squeak, bind up or fail altogether due to exposure to the elements. We found that materials such as plastic/injected carbon degrade quickly, while some competitor’s levers were using electronic bearings that were not rated for outdoor use. This leads them to an all stainless hardware and a sealed bearing.

“We definitely thought about the longevity of this product, the PNW winters are no joke, while you can ride the whole time, mud and water are a constant factor. With this in mind we made sure we used all stainless hardware, an oversized high quality sealed bearing and the injection molded thumb pad,” Kerson adds. “With the help of Kyle Warner and a handful of other rowdy riders, we put the prototype through its paces, their feedback was instrumental in the final product.”

Adding on to the ergonomics, the Loam Lever features a unique grippy injection molded thumb pad that comes in the customers choice of teal, orange or grey. We added this for comfort, overall tactile joy and extra grip.

I like this lever. I like how it is 'fun to press'. I want a 'fun to press' lever above all other qualities. Note to other dropper companies: you are losing the race if your lever doesn't have 'funpressability'

I wanna know if you can feed the cable either way as some (9pointCool can do both cable mount directions
  • 2 2
@yannickbisson: Just cut the end off the cable.
  • 6 1
@yannickbisson: Yup! There's a pinch bolt so you can route the cable either direction.

 Also, nice pictures bitch!

Was looking for this comment. Nice.

Fun times in bike land! Smile

A fun lever at a fun price ?
  • 5 0
Now say I break it in a knee to lever incident, is it rebuildable like the Wolftooth one is?
  • 2 0
$91.00 CDN for the lever or $500 for an entire system? I never knew that the lever was such a large percentage of cost. Sounds like having damage to your car costing more than your car itself.

 I like thumbing a softie.

I have the PNW Pine 27.2 dropper and it rules. May think about this as I am not a fan of the lever that came with the post. Good stuff PNW
  • 1 0
Glad to hear you're stoked on the Pine! We didn't spec a 1x lever with it because many 27.2 bikes have 2x systems, but the Loam Lever works great with it when you're ready.
  • 1 0
@pnwcomponts That makes sense. But yes the thumb paddle would be better suited for riding style. And I converted to 1 by.
  • 1 0
This isn’t what we need in mountain biking. Innovation would be providing a lever that performs, but at a fraction of the cost of what this thing costs. This is just capitalizing off the top end of the market, while demonstrating to other manufacturers that they can charge more for their parts. $90 CAD is an outrageous price.

That said, I’m sure it feels amazing and would be totally stoked if it was on my bike.
  • 1 0
I kind of agree with you. However, this price is on par with other similar products, such as the Wolf Tooth levers. And there was Novy Parts charging like $150 for a Reverb lever awhile back.

 Awesome stuff Aaron!
My next upgrade.

Asking for a friend. Will this dropper/level make a guy (or gal) ride as well as Jeff Kendall-Weed?
  • 1 1
 Short answer. No. It won't.
  • 5 1
 Absolutely (if you're Jeff)!
  • 5 0
 Thumbs up!
  • 1 0
 Exactly!
  • 1 0
I have a PNW Components post on my Intense Carbine (31.6 size, not sure which post though, external routing) and the current thumb lever sucks. I will look forward to getting one of these.
  • 1 1
Sorry you feel that way man, we're constantly trying to get better over time. The Loam Lever is rad, you'll be stoked on it.
  • 2 1
Thank you @pinkbike for launching this! And a huge thanks to everyone who was involved with development of the Loam Lever. If any of you have questions, please contact us at info@pnwcomponents.com
  • 2 0
Looks great, is the thumb pad replaceable?
  • 2 0
Absolutely! We use 3M VHB adhesive which is a tried and true adhesive, but you can rip it off if needed and swap it out. We're considering bringing out a few different colors for you guys to swap it out with. Because, you know, matchy-matchy makes you faster
  • 2 0
Have it integrated into my XTR breaks and you can put me down for one.
  • 2 0
 Wolf Tooth has I-spec compatibility

 @ZappBrannigan: As well as 9Point8.
  • 1 1
@ZappBrannigan: I think the WT is the one I am going to go to.
  • 3 0
It's coming! The iSpec II and MMX (MatchMaker X) designs are done, just waiting for production. If you buy the lever now, we can swap it out with whichever adapter you need once they're ready.
  • 1 0
@cool3: WolfTooth makes the 9.8 remote.
  • 1 0
 @ejj: Yes, I know.

 @pnwcomponents:

"3. No Slip Grip - Speaking of weather, the Loam Lever features a grippy injection molded thumb pad to keep your paws in place in even the sloppiest of conditions."

I just cut a piece of skate grip tape and stuck it on my current lever... Works like a champ; rain or shine. Grabs your glove with authority.

 brakes
  • 1 0
@TW80: Sure, but there are many other benefits to the lever than just the grippy thumb pad. It has great ergonomics, weatherproofing, light weight and compatibility with tons of droppers that many other levers don't have.
  • 1 0
This looks cool but is it better than my Wolftooth Light Action? Same price, how is this better/lighter/faster/cooler?
  • 11 0
 Great question:

1. We have an injection molded thumb pad for enhanced comfort and grippyness vs just metal
2. We use an oversized bearing with additional weather seal to keep water out of the bearing. You could pressure wash this thing and it's all good. The actuation is truly smooth as could be!
3. We have 2 forms of adjustment to get the perfect placement vs just inboard/outboard adjustment
4. We offer colors to get matchy-matchy with your rig
5. We offer a 3-year warranty
6. We're also compatible with all cable actuated droppers (Transfer, KS, Raceface, 9point8, OneUp, etc)
7. We have Ellie (a dog) as our mascot
  • 9 0
@pnwcomponents: Had me at Ellie, you should have led with that.
  • 1 0
Yeah, Wolftooth stuff is great, as are the folks there great to deal with. And the WT has the "break away" hinge that costs like $7 to bet back up and running. I thought that would be hokey but in a fluke fall I whacked my poor lever pretty hard, and I think it was saved by the break away piece. I now keep a spare on hand but never needed it. It is cool to see aftermarket levers, and hopefully the Transfer post can still be had without buying Fox's remote. So, thanks PNW, but is the lever compatible with riding in the NE US, and Quebec? I see its designed specifically for the rigors of the, well, PNW.
  • 1 0
@MikerJ: Of course! Mud is mud, rain is rain and cold is cold. We tend to have an ample amount of all those things, same with you guys. The Loam Lever works great wherever you're riding.
  • 1 0
@pnwcomponents: Do you offer a Shimano Ispec 2 version? Or is it bar clamp only?
  • 2 0
Grip tape for no slippage on existing lever. Spend the $69 on beer.
  • 2 1
Sure, but there are many more benefits to the lever than just the grippy pad.
  • 1 0
It's also extremely fun to press...
  • 1 0
Where’s the lower cost clamp-less shiftmix option?
  • 1 0
It's coming! The iSpec II and MMX (MatchMaker X) designs are done, just waiting for production. If you buy the lever now, we can swap it out with whichever adapter you need once they're ready.
  • 1 0
@pnwcomponents: sounds good, thanks for the update.
  • 1 0
@pnwcomponents: Is Matchmaker the same as the mount kit for Hope brakes?
  • 5 4
To what extent does this lever make use of domestic manufacturing?
  • 1 0
To be fair, I think that's a perfectly good question to ask.

I suppose this isn't cheap, but some things are worth spending a bit on. I would wager a guess this little unit will outlast many a dropper posts it is actuating...
