Video: Dan Milner Rides Through the Winter in 'Chill Time'

Dan Milner is no stranger to snow sports photography, having shot some of snowboarding’s most iconic and challenging expeditions over the last two decades. But no matter the weeks he’s camped out on glaciers, or the number of couloirs he’s climbed, it is on the bike that he feels most at home, even in winter.

But winter in the Alps is no easy ride. He watches the storms roll in and bury his local trails beneath snow and ice. And he watches his home valley fill with holidaying visitors rushing to find escape.

The ensuing chaos of pushing, pollution and noise, is not Milner’s world. So instead he turns to the forest —to be lost in the calm he finds there... and to ride.

Chill Time is about Milner’s passion to ride through the alpine winter. It’s a film about re-connecting with the peacefulness of nature, and about where the bike can take you, both physically and mentally, if you go looking for it.

Dan is so right about "no urgency". Riding in the winter with some snow in the forest is beautiful.

As much as I like skiing, I love riding. And as the winters wane into an occasional drizzle of snow I find that I ride more and more even in winter. If the after ski lot were to venture into trail riding in winter, I'd be both sad and a bit frustrated.

Nice film Dan. What was very clear at a fantastic fund raising talk given by Dan in aid of Ukraine last month in his home town, he is not one for taking the easy option. His slide show was amazing photo after amazing photo, whether biking in North Korea (on his trusty Yeti) or snow boarding in Alaska with Jeremy Jones (he is one of the few photographers who can get into a position to take pics of the great man). Hope to see you in the forest Dan, thx

Glad you made the show, and enjoyed it. Its a nice thing to do, sharing those anecdotes and photos — so many stories, so little time eh!— and even better when we can raise some cash for a worthy cause. That quick whip around raised 450 Euros for Save the Children's Ukraine appeal, thanks for coming along.

You should come and ride around Annecy, the lake keeps the snow away from trails at the bottom of Semnoz. Ask Michel L., I'll arrange that for next winter. Although we do get our fair bit of tourists too...!

The indomitable Michel has led me through Annecy's forest before - you have some great trails! I'm game. And then after pedaling we can go add some work out by renting a pedalo on the lake for an hour..:-))

People have tried to say that, but I usually just talk over them :-)

Duh, somewhat hypocritical statements in there. He dislikes people coming to "his" town? He dislikes the upheaval they cause? He wants quiet and calm? Yet at the same time, he is the one disrupting the quiet, snowy woods with his bike, no? Seems a bit weird...

That's not even what he's saying.

I am well known for my dislike of people generally and my non-social attitude. But I do like people coming to our valley - they give jobs to all the people in my community. But 2.5 million tourists per year do comes with a cost. But anyway, any disruption to the tranquility of the forest only came through my panting heavily as I pushed back up through the snow each time to press "record" and "stop" on the camera.
And you are right, I am weird.

@DanMilner: A little weird is bit of a understatement. Is that like a Yeti you're riding? Thats great.

@DanMilner: Everybody is a little bit weird, that makes us human. I guess I rather alluded to the slight contradiction in what you were narrating. No offense meant, looks like none taken. I do feel your need to "get away from it all". Keep on keepin' on. :-)

I tried pumping my tyres up until they bulged to 3" wide, but then they just popped off the rim FFS.
