Here in the Northeastern United States, New Hampshire to be exact, the sport of mountain biking is bigger than ever. Trails are being built all over. One could ride a different trail system, within an hour of the biggest city in southern NH almost every day for close to a month . More and more ski resorts are building world class bike parks as well, but it's rare to find an actual mountain bike trail on a mountain with views without a ski lift on it.
The more I travel to ride epic destinations around the country the stronger that desire for adventure, to be out there up in the mountains above it all, becomes. While flow trails and cross country singletrack are great, there are those of us who desire more out of our backyard landscape via bike. After years of doing an adventure ride a couple times a season, It was early this year that I decided I wanted to ride as many mountain peaks in northern NH as I could. With a family, commitments, and ever changing weather it was no easy task. Many of our adventures would happen on Friday nights, fighting our way through northbound traffic in hopes of desolate summits and clear runs down popular hiking areas.
Our mountain terrain is rugged, technical, and more often than not, unridable. There are no purpose built switchback trails to get you to the top, especially in the White Mountains. Many of the lines we desire to ride are preceded by long hike-a-bikes. In short, you gotta earn it. But it's all worth it if you're adventurous at heart.
Old hiking trails offer unique challenges around every corner, sometimes you conquer the line, sometimes it conquers you Left: Looking where we came from across the valley before the final descent Right: Is there anything better than NH Granite? @Projectnortheast YouTube Thanks to
