Pulling the RV in late on a moonless night, it wasn't until morning that we took in the gargantuan masses of striated dirt and rock, compressed and shaped by eons of time, looming against the horizon.

It seems nearly impossible to attempt to capture the essence of the riding terrain found in Virgin, UT with mere words. Little forgiveness is to be found in this harsh landscape; there is a reason this site calls to extreme mountain bikers from all around the world.

We met up with Will White, Kyle Madden, Nick Simcik, and their fearless overseer, Gypsie, for a week long trip to explore this rugged landscape and for the guys to train for their upcoming competitions.

The weather seemed to be as unforgiving as the landscape itself, with endless wind and frequent storms. A fair amount of time was spent huddled in our shelters, passing time swapping stories between the more violent bouts of Mother Nature's springtime wrath.

The downhill trails this particular domain provides are full of chunk and rock, strewn with off camber and technical sections, overlooking the vast desert landscape below.

There is also no shortage of exposure or steep vertical drop-offs. Talk about a pucker factor in some places! I was even nervous filming the crew as they navigated their way down the rugged trails.

The main attraction, the freeride area, was nothing short of a virtual, outdoor playground. It seems as if big hits and crazy lines are nestled in every nook and cranny of this robust riding region. Standing at the bottom, gazing upwards, it can be difficult to delineate where many of the freeride lines even begin. Just outside your camp door, endless riding opportunities await, beckoning to be explored and test any rider's mettle. Right down to the flickering flames of a sparking campfire, Virgin is an experience to be had.

Projekt Roam was founded by husband and wife, Colt and Jessee Maule in 2010. It has been their mission to travel North America in search of places that celebrate the unparalleled beauty and freedom of not only the bike, but the terrain we ride as well.  false. they look nice, but they have a forward rear wheel travel path. thats just retarded

Says the kid with a Kona. Maybe you should improve on your riding skills before even judging any bikes.
  • 4 2
what?!?!?! Kona, with their brake-jack device means their design has no flaws? IMO, a company comes up with an add on device to get rid of a significant brake jack problem didn't do that just for kicks, they did it because the design doesn't work well when it comes to braking.

You can ask Cam at TBC ---- he used to work for Kona many moons ago.

ever seen the video they put out? Dr. Dew goes through it with you with a prototype sitting on a bench -- they rig the device, with sorta an on/off switch somehow... it's been a while, they actually came up with a catchy "kona" branded name for it. (l think it was D.O.P.E?) we used to be a Kona dealer about 4 years ago so, pardon me... l forgot the name they gave it. they pedal the bike really hard and then slam on the brakes, without the device, the rear wheel slams up and fwd into the frame (built without a shock), they do the same thing with the device "on" and the same tail end doesn't budge.

all fine and dandy but, to me.... that's a big flaw in the design. maybe it's a little over the top considering the bike doesn't have the weight of a rider on it nor does it have the rear shock in place. we have sold a bunch of TBC's --- l never heard anyone complain about how they handle in reference to "forward rear wheel travel path".

P.S. lm not knocking Kona -- great brand, for sure very popular. they did well for us until the economy took a dive and shipping rate went sky high. them being on the west coast only for distribution -- it just wasn't a cost effective brand here at little ol' Pshop.

Does it really matter what anyone rides?? A bike is a tool to have fun, as long as your having fun, who cares!! We love our Transition bikes and the people who make up the company, but if I were to see someone on the trail riding a different bike I'm not going to stop them in the middle of the trail and tell them there bike sucks....and hopefully neither would you...so why would you do it on the Internet??? If your worried about everyone elses bikes maybe you should rethink why you ride, not what you ride... ~Peace
  • 2 0
yeah -- those boyees at TBC sure do represent well that's for sure. and totally agree with you Projek.. it ain't the bike, it's the rider... good riders might be able to tell the difference between a good bike and wannabe but, they can shred on anything they ride. like throwing a high dollar set of darts vrs throwing shitty darts that came with a dart board -- they adjust to the products.

Nothing against his Kona, I was just saying it's like criticizing someone's car when theirs isn't nearly as nice. I love my bike. But I'd sound like an idiot criticizing someone's just because it was engineered differently.

@schy. bet im fast then you. bet i go bigger to. so suck it trebek. and guess what. their 2012 operator which i ride. has the exact same geo as the demo. and it doesnt break jack.
  • 3 0
If you're faster than me then good for you! I'm amazed that you could make that assumption without seeing me ride. And I'm glad that you are so confident that your bike is as good as mine. And props for being able to say you go bigger than a kid who lives 40 minutes away from the rampage site and rides out there weekly (not saying I go bigger than you). But I'm positive I have more fun on my bike than you, I love it so much that even if someone says its the biggest piece of shit I wont even care. Have fun being faster and hitting bigger stuff than me. Oh and when you get a chance, post some videos to prove it!

Two questions: Wilkey--do you work at Revolution? If so I'm the Reign you converted to the Canyons. Did you mean to spell will and won't with h's?

Lastly, there's no way to prove who is top shredder here so I will swing by Orem and pick ya up and st George boy can meet us in Virgin and show us the ropes. Lunch on me. Deal?
  • 2 0
Schy--I would love to hit those sites. If Wilkey won't join me I'd love to meet up with ya in George for a run. I'd still buy ya lunch.

Good eye, pieces of King Kong as well. Great, burley trails, thx to Bender and co.

Sweet edit, I'm hoping to get out west next summer for a good long freeride road trip but Ive never ridden out west, 'm used to the muddy peanutbutter southeast slick. What kind of tires do ya'll use? Also, if I just drove out to virgin would i be able to find the rampage site?
  • 1 0
Looked like Flying Monkey but those shots are the tamest I have ever seen it look. FM kinda turns into KK so that only makes sense. But again those are some gnarly trails and this made them look much more tame. At first I thought it was Grafton mesa.
  • 2 0
It's was really difficult to capture the savage, steep and technical landscape of Virgin on film. Something best experienced in person to be able to take it all in, riding off rocks next to a cliff and all.

Sweet. That being said, those were the sharpest and clearest images I have seen of that trail. Serious props. There isn't anywhere to really set up on the side of the trail, so much exposure.
  • 2 0
@RpedalNgoGoGO, the old site is easier to find than the newer one. If you don't go with a local or someone that has been there before stop by Zion Cycles, they can help you out.
  • 1 0
I know Grafton Mesa and Gooseberry but where the heck is flying monkey? We stay in Hurricane at least 4-5 times a year and I've never even heard of them. What a loss. They aren't even on skid map.

 Sweet, preciate it.

this town they r filming in really needs to change its name. Virgin, Utah?!?! Seriously??? sick vid through
  • 1 0
A bit of Utah history for you: the town Virgin is named after the Virgin River- although fun to use with sexual references is named after the woman, the myth, the legend, The Virgin Mary herself. You can still think dirty thoughts though if you like, didn't mean to ruin it for you.
