6 New Helmets From Eurobike 2021

720, a company from Bozen, Italy, is trying to significantly increase a helmet's safety by replacing the inner structure with large hexagonal elastomers, or as they also call the material, high energy absorption polymers (H.E.A.P.). That HexaGo technology provides more than twice the shock absorption of EN requirements.To put this in perspective, the maximum allowed g-force value according to the EN standard is 250g, the average helmet has crash results around 175g and Seventwenty helmets go down to about 115g. Due to the flexible nature of the elastomers, and only being fixed to the outside shell at four locations, rotational forces are also being handled well.

The mountain bike helmet Awake 1.0 is available in a glossy (€199) or matte (€219) version in sizes M and L. Weighing close to 500g, the Awake 1.0 might not be the lightest, but looks to be one of the safest helmets out there.

Various shell and elastomer color combinations are available.

Fidlock's new magnetic locking mechanism is part of the package.
Pro rider Tom Öhler seems to like it and put his Red Bull helmet on display.


Abus

Abus, who by now have a huge lineup of helmets in their program, are introducing their first full-face helmet, the AirDrop. Only available with MIPS, the helmet is targeting enduro pilots due to its lighter weight and ventilation. Two versions are available AirDrop MIPS (269.95) and AirDrop MIPS QUIN (€329.95), which has Abus' QUIN crash detection system installed. With the regular version you can add it on afterwards. Sizes: S, M/L and XL and 4 colors.

The underside features a collarbone protection system with soft rubber inlay.
The CliffHanger is Abus' new trail and enduro helmet, in sizes S,M and L. It too can be equipped with the QUIN crash system and is available as a MIPS version.


TSG

It's targeting the urban market, but the TSG Geo's unique shape was calling for a mention anyway. Available in size S/M and L/XL.

The Geo even comes with integrated LED backlight.

 That Awake helmet is super interesting. I'd like to see Virginia tech test that out. It'd be amazing if it blows the doors off everything else and provides a game changer level of protection improvement. I'd like to see a full face version. I have airborn kids/friends kids and we've had a head slam. It gets scary really fast sometimes.

 It's about time somebody brought out something new in the helmet tech, I'm not a big fan of paying a hundred euro or more for a polystyrene hat

 Yes, they would need to bring it down. High helmet weight is a risk factor for neck injuries.

 It looks to have some room for improvement in weight … but that’s speculation. It need some rework for proper airflow also so hopefully V2 will be better.

 @Konyp: it's weighs less than a box of cornflakes and far less than half the weight of you're average full face and less than 200grams more than your average polystyrene cap. So....

 Be nice if that first helmet changes the game in protection and causes other companies (cough cough MIPS!) to develop further and not just settle and also buy out other protection and bin it because you’re a bunch of monopolistic pussies! (Cough cough MIPS buying Fluid and binning it because it was better…)

Only negative was it was heavier
But the low speed impact was also way above MIPS too

 @stormracing: i have a fluidinside rampage and the fluid pods are not heavy, they are not real substantial, very thin. the only helmet testing that is meaningful is that from virginia tech which gives a numeric rating for each helmet. everything else is from the companies which is not reliable. i may switch to a newer mips where they attach the comfort liner to mips liner, there is a reason why they have gone this way.

 @mastakilla: The VTech testing protocol is very similar to the MIPS one. Not saying this is some conspiracy, they had to choose something, but it is far from a perfect test of helmet safety. I only hope they do more research on the protocols themselves.

 @CustardCountry: yeah it’s really annoying. I struggle to believe that my head is larger than 95% of all adult riders. So many awesome helmets max out at 61cm. Do you have any helmets in big sizes you can recommend? Or maybe any that run larger than their stated size?

I am stuck using mid to low end giro for open face and tld d3 for full face. I would love to spend a LOT on one of the lightweight ventilated full faces but the fox proframe is just half a cm too small for me. I’m trying to find a leatt 4.0 to try on, but haven’t had any luck so far. It supposedly goes to 64cm.

 @nickmalysh: thanks for the tip on smith. I had previously looked at some that only went to 62cm but i didn’t realise some others went to 65cm. I will probably order one for my next open face. Sadly their full face is one of the helmets that only goes to 62cm.

 The article is lying about the range. I have Sena motorcycle headsets in 3 helmets and when riding off road range is pretty much limited to line of sight.
