An evolution in downhill mountain bike racing is set to take place this summer on July 13th at Red Bull Wide Open. The world’s best gravity racer will be going head to head in a Super-cross-style amplitude and race format. This all new competition will test the full scope their bike skills and determine who is truly the top gravity racer in the world.

Snaking 500 meters down the Bikepark Mottolino in Livigno, Italy, Red Bull Wide Open will feature a custom, one of a kind Super-cross size downhill track. Especially designed to challenge the competitors on a variety of levels, the athletes will have to tackle terrain with unheard of levels of speed and air time. Side-by-side they will race down a course riddled with jaw dropping 60’ gaps, massive 20’ berms, wallrides, and technical rock waterfalls. The broad elite of competitors will attack this new course concept in a non-stop, six man head-to-head competition.

AWESOME! I'll start my swim across the Atlantic.

I would recommend the Hurley Phantoms.
  • 1 1
I was going to go more along the lines of Borat..
  • 4 0
Read in the news a 15.5 foot great white is already making its way over the Atlantic...good luck bro!

As it is called "Red Bull Wide Open" I think you are going to be disappointed.
  • 31 0
This is just a race to see who is the biggest badass in gravity

"60’ gaps, massive 20’ berms, wallrides, and technical rock waterfalls." So holeshot will take the win yeh?
  • 9 0
Yep , but even still a big train of riders nose to tail will be fun to watch
  • 12 2
Should bring back 4X and call it a day
  • 6 2
It's the same problem in 4x though , 1st to the apex wins 8/10 times , 4x works in theory but in practice I would say it's flawed.

Multi-person racing works in MX because of the multiple laps , you can follow some one and see where they are hot and not and make a move based upon that.

See your point bigburd, but hasn't BMX been using that format for years? This just looks like 4X with balls... Kinda what 4X should have been all the time.
  • 2 0
The success will depend on the track, and whether the DH guys have a shot to pass the bmx guys. But 60' gaps sound entertaining . Instead of having more World Cup races, Red Bull could just have its own series and combine more races like this with the urban races and fill the void.

"This is gonna be just like every other DH race" said nobody ever!

Good to see Martin up on the starting list. Heal well shredder!
  • 1 0
Sick lineup! nästan så det e värt att åka och titta!
  • 7 0
Hum hard to call the win slavik is a f1 car out of the gate but then you have the downhill riders who will fly through the rocks and the freestyle riders who wont batter an eye lid at the jumps. Should make good viewing
  • 11 1
 no FAIRCLOUGH???
  • 6 3
 rides for monster
  • 7 0
What about Jared "have you seen the size of his calve muscles" Graves??? This sounds right up his street
  • 2 0
Zink (sure) and Reynolds (less sure) are Monster, and Hart is Rockstar so I don't think that's the reason why Fairclough's not here
  • 5 0
Surprised there's no Gee or maybe even Dan too, schedules/no invites I'd imagine!

EDIT: Just seen that it's the same dates as Mega, explains why some riders are missing.
  • 2 0
Which is also the day of EWS in La Thuile Italy I think
  • 2 1
Cam Eron Zink for the win!
  • 1 0
@Supertallguy. That doesnt seem like a reason...
  • 6 2
Nothing against this, I'm sure I'll watch this summer, but man, I wish they would put that money towards another DH World Cup stop instead...preferably one that is outside Europe for a change.
  • 3 2
There are only 2 world cups in Europe this year... The rest are in Canada, The States, The UK, Africa and Austrailia
  • 15 1
I'm pretty sure the UK is in Europe... But yes, this year has more variety than lasts

Well I know some people consider the UK to be part of Europe, and some don't. Nevertheless, there is still a great variety this year!
  • 11 0
Urrr, the UK is definitely part of Europe...
  • 2 1
Atleast look it up before you reply alex....

Cant wait to see this go down. Personally I wanna see some Utah locals on the list Mitch Ropelato and Cody Kelley. If you don't know Cody yet you will. Stoked to see Lacondeguy on the list, he's the one I look forward to see ride this the most, he is fast (maybe not WC fast) and stupid stylish.
  • 1 0
Honestly, Bingelli has a super sweet chance at winning this event. He can go huge, he and he is fast. He was top 15 at world's qualifying last year.
  • 5 0
Go Red Bull ,always stoking the coals.....
  • 6 1
 Battle of Hellion....on steroids.
  • 5 0
My prediction: Andreu Lacondeguy. He is so fast, and has style for miles!
  • 4 1
lacondeguy? really? i think you had waaaay too many of grandma nussbaum's rum cookies before that pick.
i was talkin to howard and marion the other day down at the hardware store, and they are puttin their cash on minnaar.
i'm gonna go minnaar too.

wanna bet a plate of fries and a soda down at arnold's?

aaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

how's shortcake?

happy days indeed.
  • 5 2
Honestly I think you need to consider Zink and Strait. They both have roots in downhill and slalom racing plus are freeriders who are unafraid to hit the biggest drops.
  • 2 0
Woot ill also bet on lacondeguy, maybe nobody saw how he was the fastest at rampage....
  • 1 0
I'm betting sick mik cause I like him.
  • 4 1
it would be rad to see kyle strait win, someone that doesnt compete in timed races anymore !!! such a good list of names
  • 1 0
Really? Are you sure? Re-check the DS results from sea otter 2012. 1st place timed racing.
  • 3 0
LA-CON-DE-GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He probably won't win, but he will be the most fun to watch.
  • 3 0
finally! been waiting for something like this to come along!
  • 2 1
I smell the best all round BMX will win like the best Judo martial art champ will often win in the cage. Back to basics! Luw it!
  • 3 0
Jared Graves needs to be there!!
  • 1 0
I think he may be sponsored by Monster. It wouldn't go over too well with Red Bull is someone wearing a Monster jersey is standing on top of the podium of their event. And Graves would definitely have a shot.
  • 3 0
Only one winner - Greg Minnaar.
  • 1 0
Minnaar, Hannah or Slavik will win... more than likely Slavik as he is used to racing against multiple people not just the clock
  • 1 0
Attn race organizers: put on a race series like this in Souther California and you'll turn me into a racer!
  • 2 0
 big bear..................again.
remember the 4 man dh they had?
  • 3 0
 Graves...
  • 3 0
Mega avalanche Frown Bloody enduro. *shakes fist
  • 2 1
Shame its the same date as the Mega so we wont see some more enduro crew, looking f-ing rad though.
  • 1 3
I'm curious about how it will be scored. "Amplitude and race format" is mentioned in the article. I hope style comes in to play somehow without making it a joke like Speed & Style. Otherwise watching the world's best scrub off a big set of jumps at high speed won't be that entertaining.
  • 27 0
"watching the world's best scrub off a big set of jumps at high speed won't be that entertaining".... Excuse me??
  • 2 0
It's a 500m course with big features. If it's all about speed nobody will boost, just scrub and keep it low… like 4x with bigger hits. I just think the comp and riders list has a lot more potential if style is brought into the mix instead of just speed.
  • 1 0
I'm missing someone in that list, Joost Wichman the current 4X world champion. Would be nice to see him compete here!
  • 2 0
 He retired Frown
  • 1 0
Hmm didnt know that, it wasnt given as much attention over here then his last achievement. Too bad...
  • 3 2
Thanks RedBull! I'm still gonna drink Monster cuz it's alot cheaper but... Thanks RedBull!
  • 6 4
I'm putting my money on Kyle Strait. USA! USA! USA!
  • 2 0
Seems like a really good mix of riders, this will be interesting.
  • 1 0
Finally some real racing. Enough of that one-at-a-time crap! Back to the roots!
  • 2 0
I feel like Dan Atherton would do very well here.
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
Is kicking and shoving allowed on the 6 man race? Sounds like Romanesque bike battling
  • 1 0
 Best biking news this year!!!
  • 1 0
is that Nick Beer on the second Pic?
  • 1 0
not sure about the second (group of riders) but Beer is in the white jersey in the third. Easily recognizable facial expression!
  • 2 1
I'm gunna call Mick Hanna to win this
  • 1 0
Was I the only one hoping to see Cedric Gracia in the lsit?
  • 1 0
Woooooow can't wait for it!!! but, where's Graves?!
  • 1 0
I hope this does well and developes into a series.
  • 2 0

  • 1 0
 Soooo no girls?
  • 2 4
Another Redbull event where riders put their life on the line and get paid nothing in the process of making Redbull richer
  • 1 0
Was thinking exactly the same, they'd better pay them well enough for competing, not just some token gesture prize that stops at fifth place * cough rampage cough*
  • 1 0
no one said that they had to compete, if they didn't want to then they wouldn't do it
