Lenzerheide MTB World Championships Promises to be One Wild Ride

PRESS RELEASE: UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, Lenzerheide

The 2018 Mountain Bike World Cup might already be history, but the battle for glory in Downhill and Cross Country is about to reach another level! The world’s best mountain bike athletes and the rising stars of the future generation will be competing for gold medals and rainbow stripes during the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships presented by Mercedes-Benz from September 5-9 in Lenzerheide. 10 athletes and one national team will be crowned as World Champions in front of tens of thousands of supporters. First, though athletes in both disciplines will have to overcome the demanding tracks.

The STRAIGHTline leads to gold – new wood section

Lenzerheide’s STRAIGHTline will be mostly recognizable to the athletes, as it already presented a number of changes last year looking towards the World Championships in 2018. However one additional modification has been made to the track this year, adding another wood section. After the Road Gap in the bottom third riders will first face a series of corners before heading back into the woods earlier than in the past. The freshly prepared wood section precedes the natural one-meter drop 'Mitas Wall' and will most certainly get gnarlier as the week goes on due to underlying roots, that will become visible through the carved up dirt.

by Sven Martin

The 2.2 kilometer-/ 1.4 mile-long track belongs to the fastest tracks in mountain biking and will challenge all riders with iconic features such as the impressive 'Cornèrcard Rock Garden', the high-speed 'X-Class Full Gas Step Up', 'Graubünden Road Gap', the 'Lenzerheide Edge' and the 'Red Bull Drop of Fame'. “I also expect the 'Ochsner Sport Cabin Hit' to be a key section,” explains Head Course Builder Rafael Tschäff Rhyner. "Riders need to take care to gauge their speed to not overshoot before the 90° corner. Should it be wet during the finals, which wasn’t the case in the past years, I think things will get really interesting in the rock garden up top and in the new wood section."

Cross Country Track: unchanged, but hellish

The Cross Country course hasn’t been modified since the changes that were made last year and will once again put the legs and lungs of every athlete to the test. Things could get difficult right from the get-go. "One of the keys to being successful is the start. After the first climb the track will take the riders to 'Heidi’s Hell'. If you’re not in the first group, this downhill can literally be hellish," Rhyner thinks. “If you are hanging back, things are going to get tight.” 'Heidi’s Hell' is a steep and highly technical descent that runs from the highest point of the track into a gnarly root section that will be very slippery in the wet. Athletes have to overcome an altitude difference of 188m / 616ft and a number features such as the 'Lenzerheide Cliff', the 'Ochsner Sport Dual Slalom' or 'Mitas Muddy Climb' on every round of the 4.2 kilometer-/ 2.6 mile-long track before they finally hit the 'Cornèrcard Ramp' and the finishing straight in front of thousands of ecstatic supporters.

Tight Racing expected – Who is in the running?

The World Cup season was full of surprises this year, which hints at exciting races to come. World Cup Overall winner Amaury Pierron (FRA) came more or less out of nowhere this year and will certainly be able to give reigning World Champion and fellow countryman Loïc Bruni a run for his money. The list of potential World Champions certainly doesn’t end there though and seems to be longer than ever. Recovered veterans Aaron Gwin (USA) and Greg Minnaar (RSA) and other top guns such as Danny Hart (GBR), Laurie Greenland (GBR), Troy Brosnan (AUS), Loris Vergier (FRA) or Luca Shaw (USA), to name a few, will all have a shot at winning the gold medal. The women’s Downhill will be no less exciting! Rachel Atherton (GBR) was able to snatch the World Cup Title away from Tahnée Seagrave (GBR) last weekend, but expect more names in contention for the World Championship Title in Lenzerheide. Rachel Atherton, Tahnée Seagrave, Myriam Nicole (FRA) and Tracey Hannah (AUS) all have what it takes to be threatening and take the win. Swiss hopes took a blow when Emilie Siegenthaler dislocated her elbow, but the local hero has her eyes firmly set on her return to the start gate for the World Championships in her home country.

by Sven Martin

Cross Country will be an absolute highlight for the home crowd in Switzerland. With both World Cup winners Jolanda Neff and Nino Schurter rolling up to the start line to defend their World Championship Titles, the atmosphere will be at its boiling point. However, it will not be a given. Schurter had his work cut out for him during the World Cup season this year. Admittedly, he had mechanicals, which made life difficult, but still it seems as if the opposition has been able to close the gap somewhat. Schurter wasn’t a show of pure domination as he has been in the past. Mathieu Van der Poel (NED), Gerhard Kerschbaumer (ITA), Anton Cooper (NZL) and Henrique Avancini (BRA) were all prepared to challenge the Swiss winning machine and will most certainly do so in the spotlight of a World Championship as well. Sam Gaze (NZL), who was able to shock the Cross Country world with his win ahead of Nino Schurter in Stellenbosch (RSA) to kick off the season, on the other hand, will not be able to compete due to a broken wrist sustained in Mont-Sainte-Anne. The battle for the coveted rainbow stripes in the Women Elite will also be hard fought. Apart from Neff and Annika Langvad (DEN), whose duel has kept the spectators in suspense during the whole World Cup season, there is an array of athletes wanting to have a say. Maja Wloszczowska (POL), Emily Batty (CAN), Anne Tauber (NED), Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (FRA), Kate Courtney (USA) and Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa (NOR) will all be in contention of snatching a medal, if not even creating an upset in the fight for gold.

Real shame Gee Atherton won’t be racing
  • 3 2
Whaat? How? But.. but, why? I mean, I see on his insta that British cycling federation is not giving him a place, but does anyone knows exactly why? Only Danny and Laurie are in front of him at the World Cup final standings. How many spots does UK federation have for the Worlds for men elite?
  • 19 2
@mentalhead: spots were decided a long time back, when Gee wasn't ranked so high... unfortunate and disappointing, given his current speed, but understandable.
  • 37 5
@sourmix: Not understandable really, Gee finished 18th at last years world champs - 4th Brit, and still ranked higher than other riders this year at the time of selection. Anyhow, there shouldn't even be a selection process because that opens the door to politics, it should just be the top 7 riders in the overall standings from the current world cup series.
  • 61 1
Because he hasn't been riding with his sister!
  • 21 19
@mentalhead: simple. He hasn't been good enough this season. Last weekend was his first decent result this year.
  • 12 10
Rachel is going to win mens and womens for the first time in history.
  • 30 2
While it sucks that Gee isn't on the team and we could all be angry with British Cycling for their decision, it would be super unfair to kick someone off the team who was officially selected because we want Gee on the team now.
  • 2 1
@chrismac70: 8th and 2nd at consecutive rounds ?. But I guess selection has to be made early season for logistics
  • 4 1
@NickTerry: they pick from their National championship not by world ranking

True, but lets face it G is finished. His second place at the weekend was partly down to the faster track in the rain vs the mud the top 10 starters faced...
  • 25 1
@Richt2000: Garbage. The track wasn't significantly slower, did you not watch Pierron's run?

 Maybe HE didn´t want to
  • 15 4
@dh-corn: He definitely did you daft bugger
  • 65 1
@Richt2000: LOL. The guy dislocates his hip, has an invasive surgery & long recovery time, returns to racing, gets up to race speed, rides two World Cups with broken bones in his hand, finishes the year in the Top 10 and you say he's finished. He's a beast and this season proves it.

flag enduroNZ (Aug 30, 2018 at 4:16) (Below Threshold)
@Richt2000: whilst I love Gee as a rider and he will always be one of the best downhillers ever, I do tend to agree with this.

He's been at the top for long time now and there are faster younger guys coming through. Simply a fact of life.
  • 5 0
@ShempHoward: can't remember the details cause it was in the kate 90's, but Ann Caro Chauson did the absolute fastest time of the day in one race
  • 10 2
I'm a Gee fan, but fact is that until last weekend it appeared that his heart wasn't in it this year, so I think the decision to select some up and coming riders was the right one at that point.
Great to see Gee back on it now (some rumours around what his new motivation might be) but the decision was made, and it would be really harsh on any other rider to change it now.
JT
  • 3 1
@AsafGurfinkel: I thought it's only about the UCI points riders can collect from the UCI accredited events. If it's "just" based on nationals results then the British cycling federation is certainly not paying enough attention to this part of the sport. :sigh:
  • 2 0
@Richt2000:@Richt2000: maybe, but he also quali'd first. Guess we'll just have to wait until next year to see if hes back on point.

Gee always had crazy fitness, wonder if he'd do well at e____o
  • 6 0
@BryceBorlick: ndur??? Yes he has ndur'd quite a bit over his career.
  • 1 0
@ismasan: I kind of remember that,, if anyone would it would her. The mens class wasn't remotely as competitive back then but she was a beast.
  • 2 1
still... not as competitive, but the best of the best were racing that day, like nowadays. I can't name any other female athlete who has acomplished that in any sport
  • 1 0
@ismasan: I recall a few years ago wasn’t Rachel faster than the men through then speed trap at Monte St Ann?
  • 1 1
 @johnyt: Do tell?
  • 1 0
@markhouse: Honestly I'm no slouch on a race track and have ridden with bunch of make/female pro's, Sam Hill, Jill Kitner etc. Frequently ride with the local pro men. I think it would be hilarious how bad Rachael would shred me on any track. Hilarious as in make me look like a new jack when I started DH probably when she was learning to walk,, mega respect and hope she closes out the season with a win.
  • 1 0
@mentalhead: because there were a load of other British riders who were faster than him when the team was selected. He has come off the boil recently and generally been finishing around 20th

  • 5 1
@djyosh: He gained all his time at during the steep section at the end of the La Bresse track. Did you not watch the race?
  • 3 4
@jayacheess: that steep tech part was also right after the long sprinting part, which he had more energy left coming into due to his enduro training. Nice try tho
  • 7 1
@mollow: "Nice try! That guy only rides steeps better than anyone because he's in good shape. pffffffftttttttt"
  • 2 5
@jayacheess: almost what I said, clueless tool...
  • 3 2
@jayacheess: yeah, people are trying to downplay his win. Maes is an awesome bike rider.
  • 21 3
Man, Lenzerheide & the UCI really put their heads together for all of the feature naming on the DH course... the Cornèrcard Rock Garden, the X-Class Full Gas Step Up, Graubünden Road Gap, the Lenzerheide Edge, the Red Bull Drop of Fame, the Ochsner Sport Cabin Hit and last but not least.. the indomitable 1m high MITAS WALL!!!
  • 16 0
and despite having Rob, Claudio and Bart who all speak perfect english, it will still be read out in awkward, broken english by the faceless voice of the course preview voiceover.

  • 6 10
flag ka-brap (Aug 30, 2018 at 3:54) (Below Threshold)
@kazwei: In terms of feature naming, yes I would prefer they not do it. It's incredibly lame, cheesy, and it makes our sport sound like a joke.

  • 4 1
@ka-brap: no it helps put money into the sport. It's just names mr ka brap
  • 9 2
@enger: As if this is the ONLY way to put money into the sport. Perhaps try being slightly more creative than slapping a business' name to the road gap? It's like that line from Idiocracy- "I'm the Secretary of State, brought to you by Carl's Jr"
  • 10 0
@WAKIdesigns: Rectal Randall would be a great name for a schwalbe rear tire.
  • 3 1
@ka-brap: I don't mind sponsors naming obstacles if they put money into our sport. Rather see mnb grow than shrink....WC weekends seem to be the high light of my TV experience.

Thanks red bull and other sponsors that put effort into WC mnb!
  • 6 1
@enger: Again, I'm not at all saying I am opposed to sponsorship or bringing money into our sport. It needs to happen and it should, I just think there are more creative & efficacious ways to do it. I guess I'd just rather see "Yankee Stadium" or "Fenway Park" rather than "KFC YUM Center" or "Quicken Loans Arena"
  • 1 2
@ka-brap: that's how we get sponsor money is my letting them advertise and put their name on obstacles for WC, arena, statuims, theaters etc.
  • 9 1
Lets start naming every single rock and root too. Lots of money to be made there. BUT, lets be honest here, the DH track should start at the TOP of the mountain, not the middle. Making into a five plus minute run will only mean more alcohol $ales and more time for more TV ad$. Plus it could be on of the gnarliest DH tracks in the world. The terrain is there.
  • 3 0
 @Boardlife69: agreed....more beer for sure!

I loved hearing claudio saying schlitt mountain in le bresse...

Whilst I find the world champs exciting in all mtb disciplines, I have always been a firm believer since its inception , that World Cup champion should wear the rainbow stripes as world champion. Putting it all together on one day is fantastic, putting it Together all year is even more impressive. I really hope the ews never does change its format in this regard.
  • 1 0
I mean, there still is a title for the racer who puts it together all year- the World Cup Overall. At least this way, we get to have two titles/races to talk about.

It also seems to be a shared thing with alpine skiing. They have Overall titles and a separate World Championships too.
  • 2 3
You are entitled to your opinion
  • 4 0
I feel like both titles have entirely different mentalities.

World cup overall means consistency, a rider could never win a race and yet still win the overall.

World Champs is a "nothing to lose, everything to gain" scenario where guys have to push to win. You don't get 7 rounds, you get 3-5 minutes.
  • 1 0
Under the aspect that in dh the mental side is incredibly important as well as finding a balance between pushing your limits and keeping it safe, the differentiation between world champs and overall in my opinion is a rather perfect match for the sport. It makes room for different individuals to perform under different circumstances, so if a rider is very consistent and wins the overall by carefully collecting points that's cool, but having guys like Danny or Laurie Greenland push themselves and go balls to the wall in one run to get the WC title is equally thrilling and requires a totally different approach and mindset.

Being Swiss, I feel offended by this cheesy video. The Swiss tourism office really likes to hype up all stereotypes about Switzerland.
  • 6 0
My eyes are bleeding with French videos too, I know what it is....
  • 6 0
Unfortunately it was actually pretty entertaining, and a good mix of the sport and advertising Swiss culture\environment even it's playing to every possible stereotype you can think of. It'd be funny to see a Scottish version like this for Fort William!

@scar4me: ahahah people fully drunk, landscape, people watching football, landscape, brewery, landscape, distillery, landscape
  • 2 1
 @scar4me: sorry: watching rugby
  • 19 5
I genuinely appreciated the video and in my view you just ruined what it tried to achieve, that you can distance yourself from the stereotype of the tight arsed Swiss by laughing at it, sorry... I have experienced that in Germany too, a hotel manager guiding us around the hotell making jokes of big parites with singing taking place in the grand apartments, old dudes checking in with young girls, and our German colleague just couldn’t keep it together, and starting reprimending the dude in German, for showing the bad side of the country, too bad Swedes could understand enough German to get what it was about. If he didn’t chime in, nobody would care and move on, we were all entertained, but he did, so now everyone remembers that Germans like loose women, singing at parties aaaand, they have no sense of humor...

When you can laugh at yourself, they cannot hurt you
  • 5 1
@WAKIdesigns: laugh at yourself, that's not a swiss stereotype
  • 5 4
@scar4me: being a Pole living in Sweden I find this preposterous. Children should never be put next to alcohol.

Now my neighbor is Polish, he just got a new Audi Q8 despite being a regular carpenter, we need to have a meeting with other nighbours to determine whether we should inform the Police just in case. Anonymously off course,

Really, I was surprised there was no mention of the BIS, or Hans Castorp enjoying his cigars; to draw us into Switzerland.
  • 4 1
The wurst part is Swiss TV (SRF) will only show XCO because there is a really good chance that a Swiss will win both men and womens. But they wont show DH cause there isnt a chance in hell for a Swiss to even podium. Its a damn shame too cause DH needs more exposure in Switzerland. DH *could* be a huge sport here considering the popularity of ski racing. Its pratically THE SAME FORMAT. But sadly DH is like a bastard step child here regarding media exposure. #SHOWTHEDHRACE #SRF
  • 1 0
Lighten up bro, it was cheesy but also pretty funny. Literally nobody anywhere will mistake this for a serious representation of the Swiss culture or everyday life.
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: Totally agree they should show the DH race as well. But i think DH racing has some difficulties in Switzerland, sadly there are not many DH races left in Switzerland, Wiriehorn, Bellwald, Gstaad and Homberg. Riding DH is popular but racing DH not so much. We need more events!
  • 1 0
@Boardlife69: Well according to lenzerheide2018.ch/de/rennprogramm it will actually be shown this time.

Man, there are so many people that can win the men's Dh. It's going to be an intense race! I'm hoping Gwin can get it just to get that off his list of things to do. But seriously I just want to see a race with all of the top dudes in good conditions. Man, it's going to be crazy! Gwin, Bruni, Minaar, Pierron, Vergier, Maes, Shaw....... I'm also excited to watch the Women's XC. Man, that last race was sick. Neff is a downhill monster on top of being strong as F.
