Summer season is in full swing and we are itching to get up to the mountains for some high alpine lift access. Our first stop this summer is Coeur d'Alene and Kellogg, ID just across the border from Spokane, WA. Nestled in the Bitterroot Mountains of North Idaho, Coeur d'Alene sits at the edge of the Rockies on the shores of beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene. This small, lake resort community is home to the rich and famous with the likes of John Elway, John Travolta and even Oprah owning homes on its shores. But don't let all that fool you. All the glitz and glamor aside, this area is an amazing spot for any outdoor recreation. From a lazy boat-ride around the lake to an Official Ironman, everyone can enjoy this extraordinary area.
In this edition of RMD, we caught up with the Terra Sports bike crew whose shop in downtown Coeur d’Alene is minutes from the lake and regional trailheads. New owner Alex Castagno, has transformed the business into an all-inclusive bike shop catering to any cyclist’s needs at any skill level. To add to their biking options, Alex and shop employee Chris Caro recently put their heads and shovels together and built a pump track in Alex's back yard, and according to Alex: "It's pretty RAD." In addition, Terra Sports was named the number one dealer in the country for sales of the Cannondale Jekyll in 2013 and is on track to beat their record in 2014. With world-class trails on Canfield Mountain, a short 5 minutes from the shop, there is no wondering why the Jekyll is so popular around here. Terra Sports is now working together with the bike park at nearby Silver Mountain Resort in order to ensure and promote a great bike scene in North Idaho.
After checking out the shop and backyard pump track we were stoked to suit up and head to Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, ID to catch the gondola. Kellogg, an old mining town just 30 minutes on the freeway from Coeur d’Alene, may not be as glitzy but the mountains just keep getting bigger and better the closer you get. Willy Bartlett, a marketing associate at Silver Mt., invited us to check out the terrain for a few days, and we were extremely impressed. The gondola at Silver is the longest in the world and runs 2-8 pm on Fridays, 9:30-5pm on Saturday and 9:30-4 Sunday-Tuesday. While it may not be the highest gondola, it is over 3 miles long with an impressive 3,400 vertical descent, and believe me, after every run you are definitely feeling every one of those 3,400 feet. In addition, they run a chair lift at the top of the gondola for hot laps on the upper section of trails. Silver Mountain Resort has something for every skill type, from the beginner just building confidence to the seasoned veteran looking for a challenge with several trails boasting over 7 continuous miles of downhill. Riding at Silver is looking great for the future as the Resort plans to continue building more trails and hiring more trail crews.
If you want to turn a day of riding into a full vacation experience you can stay in the village with numerous lodging and restaurants options. A huge indoor water park with a surf wave will convince any hesitant family member that going to Silver Mountain Resort will be fun for everyone, no biking required.
Thanks to Willy and the boys from Terra Sports who took the time to show us all the sick trails. The beautiful soil, some serious flow and berm after berm will not leave you disappointed when you come up to Kellogg, ID. With all the new work being done on the trails and the vision here at the mountain, we definitely recommend you check this place out. We know we will be back! For more info please visit
